Ryan, age 9, Cody, age 13, Paul, 14, Bob, 24.

Dad:
I watched and listened to the boys as they talked about the days to come.
They all seemed to have ideas of what they wanted from each other. The subjects
went from video games to favorite television shows, bike riding, and hiking. The
boys even told Ryan about our hide away cabin. They said nothing about the
events at the cabin that weekend, which was a surprise to me. When the hospital
staff brought supper for Ryan, I sent Cody and Paul to the cafeteria to get
supper for them and me. I watched as the doctor checked Ryan over on his night
round and was told that Ryan was doing well. Still in a considerable pain, but
that was to be expected. I decided that the boys and I would leave at seven
o'clock so that Ryan could relax, watch some television, and then get some
sleep. This was a very tiring day for him and he was starting to show the signs
of fatigue. I gave Ryan a hug and watched the boys do the same, promising that I
would be back in the morning. I gave Ryan my home phone number and told him to
call me if he had any problems in the night. If he couldn't go home tomorrow,
then Cody would return tomorrow night after school and Paul would follow after
his math lesson. The boys and I talked all the way home about Ryan. I wanted to
clean out the storage room and convert it to a bedroom for Ryan. We decide to
tackle that job immediately upon arrival at home. If Ryan were to come home in
the morning, then he would need a place to call his own. The boys and I worked
until a little after nine that night and then I sent Cody to the shower. Paul
continued to help, until Cody was clean. Paul then took his turn in the shower.
Cody stood in the door watching me, with just a towel around his middle. He told
me that his back had a sore spot. I decide that the room could wait. I took Cody
into his room and gave him a back message, and he drifted off to sleep. When I
got up to leave, Paul stood there with a giant smile on his face. I took him to
his room and gave him a message too. The only difference was, Paul made a mess
of his towel.

Cody:
We left Ryan tonight and headed for home. We talked and decided to get his
room ready. I guess that I must have lifted something improperly, I had a sore
spot in my back. My shower didn't help so I told Dad about it. I thought that he
would get me some Tylenol. Instead, he took me to my room and put me to sleep
with a back rub. Now I could get to like that every night.

Paul:
I finished my shower and dried myself off. I wrapped the towel around my
middle and started for my room and bed. I got as far as Cody's room and stood
quietly watching Dad message Cody's back. Just watching him rub Cody that way
gave me an erection. He wasn't doing anything sexual, just a loving back rub. I
was smiling, when Dad was done with Cody. He escorted me to my room and started
doing the same to me. He must have worked on my back and butt for ten minutes,
when I couldn't take it any longer. That was when I was glad that the towel was
between the bed and me. I simply exploded, with the longest organism of my life.
Wow, I cleaned myself up, gave Dad a hug, a kiss and fell back into bed.

Dad:
I took a shower, checked the doors were locked and one final check of the
boys. I did cover up a naked Cody. He never seems to stay covered at night. I
looked at the alarm clock, half past ten. I set the clock so that I was up with
the boys in the morning. I crawled into bed, wondering what tomorrow would
bring.

Ryan:
My new family left me at seven o'clock with promises to return tomorrow if
I didn't get to go home. I received a hug from all of them, and couldn't believe
how great it made me feel. It was as if I could feel the love pour from them to
me. After they left, I watched some television and the nurse gave me my pain
medication at nine o'clock. My bottom was still raw in places. I guess that some
of the marks may never go away. I lay there in bed and as the medicine took
effect, I drifted off to sleep. I woke up in agony at two o'clock in the
morning. I pushed the button for the nurse and waited. The nurse came in and I
told her that I needed something for the pain. She informed me that the doctor
hadn't authorized any more medication. She would try to contact the doctor, but
it would take a while. I couldn't take the pain. I had waited for thirty minutes
and still nothing. I rang the bell the second time and was informed that the
doctor hadn't returned the call. It was obvious that this nurse wouldn't listen
to a nine-year-old kid. I watched the nurse leave my room and started to cry. I
decided that this was enough of this stupidity. I picked up the phone and called
my new Dad. The clock said three in the morning. The phone rang twice before Dad
answered. I sobbed as I explained to him about the last hour and the doctor not
authorizing more medication. Dad said to hang up and that he would take care of
this immediately and then come to the hospital. I told him to stay at home. If
he could get me some medicine so that I could sleep there was no sense in his
being here. It was less then ten minutes before a doctor came in and looked at
my chart and gave me a much-needed shot to put me to sleep. I drifted off to
sleep after thanking the doctor. I heard and felt nothing until half past eight
the next morning. My new Dad was sitting in my room with a smile, watching me as
I reentered the world. I needed to use the bathroom and Dad helped me from my
bed. The pain was still there, I knew that going home wasn't an option. I would
need the medicine for at least another day. Dad hugged me as he helped me back
to bed and my breakfast that was waiting.

Dad:
Ryan's phone call at three in the morning really annoyed me. Why, in the
world would that doctor not have authorized more medication? That nurse was
following orders, but by this time she certainly should have gotten the problem
taken care of. The fact that she wasn't listening to a nine-year-old patient was
enough for me to raise the roof at the hospital. My call to the doctor in charge
at that time of the morning wasn't polite. I informed him of my call from Ryan
and explained the problem. I told him to take of Ryan or else I would file a
formal complaint of neglect. The doctor assured me that he would personally take
care of Ryan. I fell back into an uneasy sleep, listening for a call that didn't
come. I woke to my alarm going off and the sounds of two young boys getting
ready for another day.
"Cody, I need you to get homework assignments for Ryan." Paul, Frank will
bring you to the hospital after your lesson is complete." "Boys, I received a
call from Ryan at three o'clock and he was in a lot of pain. I don't think that
they will release him today." Cody handed me a padded vinyl folded protect pouch
and told me that was for Ryan to borrow when he got bored and I ran out of
things to talk with him about. I dropped the boys off at the front of the school
as I headed off to see my new kid. Ryan was still asleep when I entered his
room. He had what looked like a contented smile on his young face, as he started
to wake up. I had to smile as Ryan's eyes locked on me as I moved to him and
gave him a good morning hug. The hug didn't last too long. I helped Ryan to the
bathroom and then back to bed for breakfast. I sipped on the coffee that I had
brought with me.

Cody:
I went directly to the School Guidance Office and talked to them about
setting up assignments for Ryan. I told them that he was in Dads custody and
would be out for at least a week with his injuries. They promised to contact all
the teachers that Ryan had and to have the assignments ready for me to pick up
each day at the end of school. I was surprised how many people asked me about
Ryan that day. I must say that it made me happy to tell them about him and that
he was my new brother.

Ryan:
The doctor came in and apologized for not giving proper instruction for my
medication. He checked me over and found that my temperature was above normal.
After, talking to my new Dad, the doctor decided to keep me for at least another
day. I was in so much pain sometimes that I didn't even argue the point, I would
need the medications. I wasn't happy, but then it was as I had expected. My new
Dad and sat and talked about everything imaginable. We started with Cody and
Paul. I was amazed that he believed that they were settling into their new life
with only a few problems. Paul had problems with math. Cody still was having
problems dealing with the loss of his real Mom and Dad. We talked about my Mom
and Dads Funeral. I was crying, but my new Dad held me while we talked about the
arrangements to be made. We talked of the house we would all live in. Dad told
me about the bedroom that the boys and he had started cleaning last night for
me. Then we talked of House rules. These rules were as yet unwritten. They were
to be written by Cody, Paul and now I would need to help. They were the rules to
live bye. Dad said that they must include discipline, and when corporal
punishment in the form of a belt on a bare bottom would be used. Dad informed me
that the belt would be used, but NEVER would I be abused or marked again. I was
to help with household chores each night after schoolwork was complete. That job
could be vacuum cleaning a rug, clearing the table after supper or taking the
trash to the garage. None of the jobs would take twenty minutes. The rest of the
time would be family, fun games, television. We talked about bedtime. I had
always been sent to bed at eight o'clock. My new Dad thought that was
ridiculous. Cody and Paul had to be in bed at ten. I being younger would be nine
or half past nine on school nights. Fridays and Saturday were good till
midnight, if we were good and could stay awake that long. My new home was
outside the village limits by twenty miles. I thought that would be great, I
hated the sounds of loud cars and trucks at night. Dad helped me take my walk
down the hall, just keeping me company and lending a lot of support along the
way back. The doctor had given new orders for pain medication and antibiotics, I
was still in some pain. The doctor said any more medication and I would be
asleep all the time. I would have been bored out of my mind if my new Dad hadn't
been here all morning.

Paul:
My day at school was going great and then I walked into math class. The
teacher handed us each a quiz to do. I sat at my desk and carefully remembered
every word that Frank had said to me. I looked the problems over and then
started carefully calculating. I made sure that every number could be easily
read. I made sure that everything was correct and readable. I wasn't going to
lose one point. I finished the quiz and handed it to the teacher. I was told
that the rest of class could be used as a study period while he corrected the
quizzes. That was a good thing for me. I finished my English homework, and
started on my science. The bell rang for the end of class and I went to lunch. I
sat with Cody and a bunch of friends, talking and eating. It was almost time to
go to my next class when my math teacher walked into the cafeteria. He walked
over to me and smiled.

"Congratulations, Paul, you had a perfect score on your quiz.

Paul:
I was totally speechless, I had finally passed a quiz. The perfect mark was all
because of my getting extra help from Frank. I really need to talk to Dad about
a way to show Frank my appreciation for all his hard work.

Dad:
I was running out of things to talk to Ryan about. I had been sitting in
one place for three hours. The hardest part was Ryan's crying in my lap when we
talked of the funerals to come. I had helped Ryan take his walk down the hall
and back to bed. It was then that I remember the thing that Cody had handed to
me. I reached into my coat pocket and took the leather case out. I didn't have a
clue what was in the package. "Ryan, Cody said to tell you that this was for you
to borrow. I have no idea what it is." He must have known, because his face had
the biggest smile of the morning on it. I watched in amazement as Ryan open the
package and took out a pocket game system, with headphones. A note dropped out
of the package, Ryan read it and handed to me. The note read: "Hi, Ryan, I
figured that you and Dad would talk for a while and then you would run out of
things to talk about. I bet you were getting bored when Dad handed this to you.
I have placed two games in the front flap for you to play. Have fun. "Your new
brother, Cody."

Ryan:
I couldn't believe my eyes when Dad handed me the vinyl case. I have never owned
one of these, but I have played with Cody's before. He knew what games I loved
to play and they were in the front pouch. I read the note and handed it to Dad.
I showed him the system and started to play. Lunch arrived for me and Dad
decided that he needed to go get lunch also.

Dad:
I don't know how people can just sit all day. Ryan's lunch arrived and I
took the opportunity to go get mine. I went to the phone and called the store. I
talked to the manager and found out that all was going well. I called my
attorney and told him to find out everything that he could about Ryan's parents.
I needed to get their funeral arranged and I needed to know what was going to
happen to the family home. Was it insured? Did they have Life insurance? Did the
murder and suicide effect the insurance if there was any? My attorney assured me
that he would get me answers and get the answers to me. I called the local
furniture store and arranged for a new double bed for my new son. It was to be
delivered in the morning at nine o'clock. Just enough time for me to get the
boys to school and get back to the house to meet their truck. I stopped at the
gift shop and bought a deck of playing cards, I could always play solitary,
while Ryan took his nap. I bought a large coffee and a salad for lunch. I sat
down in the cafeteria and slowly ate my lunch, thinking of all the changes that
were made in my life and all the ones to come. I walked back to Ryan's room in
time to say GOOD night and watch him drift off to sleep for an afternoon nap. I
sat down in my chair and decide to do the same.

Cody:
I got my slavery report back from my Social Studies teacher. I received a
ninety as my grade. The teachers note said that points off were due to some of
my information off the Internet being wrong. I didn't understand what was
incorrect, but decided that the mark was good enough not to complain. I finished
my school day and stopped at the office to get Ryan's homework. The teachers had
been good today. They had given me copies of the books that they used as well as
homework from yesterday and today. They were not sure if Ryan could get to his
own books to use. I don't think anyone in our family had even thought of that
problem. Paul and I talked for a minute before he got on the bus to Frank's
home. He told me about his math quiz and I told him about my report grade. Paul
asked that I not tell Dad about his perfect quiz, he wanted to do that himself.
Dad was late picking me up and apologized for being late. Seems that he took a
nap, when Ryan did. He would still be asleep if Ryan hadn't waked him up and
asked what time I was getting out of school today.

Ryan:
I woke up to see my new Dad still asleep in the chair. He sure did look
peaceful, as he slept. I looked at the clock on the wall. School had just gotten
out for the day. I leaned over and gave Dad a friendly poke in the arm. When he
was looking at me I asked. "Dad, What time is Cody getting out today, and how is
he getting here?" You would have thought that there was a spring in that chair.
He gave me a hug and said, "I am in deep trouble now. I was supposed to pick him
up." He was gone in a flash.

Dad:
I knew when Ryan poked me that something was wrong. His question about
Cody got my attention in a flash. I glanced at the wall clock and knew that Cody
was standing at school wondering where I was. " Ryan I am in deep trouble, I am
late picking Cody up. We will be back in a few minutes." I drove the speed limit
all the way to the school. Cody hopped into the front seat, after tossing two
book bags in the back. "Cody, I am sorry for being late. I was taking a nap at
the same time as Ryan. Ryan woke me up or I would still be sleeping." We arrived
back at the hospital and I stopped to get Cody and I each a drink. Cody was
carrying both the bags from the car, so I grabbed one so he didn't have to carry
it. I was surprised by the weight, it must have weighed forty pounds. "Cody,
what am I carrying, lead weights?"

Cody:
"Dad, you are carrying all the books and homework for that new kid of
yours upstairs. The teachers sent books so that Ryan had everything that he
needed. They weren't sure that he would have the books with him, or that they
had been retrieved."
I looked at Ryan lying on his side in bed with a smile. He looked a little
better today. "Hey, Ryan that book bag that Dad has is full of your books and
homework. The teachers said to do everything that you could and that I could
help you understand how to do it if you didn't understand something. I leaned
over the bed and gave Ryan a hug. I pulled out my report and handed it to Dad.
"Dad look at this, I got a ninety on my report. Dad smiled for a minute and then
I saw a look of disgust come to his face. That expression was calm compared to
later.

Dad:
Cody's report mark of ninety would have been fine with me if not for the
teacher's note. I was mildly upset that the part the teacher referred to as
wrong was from a college web site. I will do some surfing of my own and find out
whom was wrong. The guilty party would get a note from me. I smiled at Cody's
worried frown. "Get the homework done, this is a fine mark. I will check out
this information and see who is wrong and if your report is accurate, we will
get your teacher to give you the better grade." "If the site you quoted is wrong
then you and I will send them an e-mail and ask that they correct it so that
others don't have the same results.

Ryan:
Cody sat there and did all his homework while I worked on mine. I have
always enjoyed school and work hard to get the best marks possible. I finished
everything excepted my English homework. I looked at the homework assignment
sheet and realized that my book report was due yesterday. The report was
complete, but it sat at my old home in my bedroom. "Dad, I have a major problem,
my book report is done and was due yesterday. The problem is it is in my school
bag at my old house."

Dad:
When Ryan told me about his book report it gave me a good excuse to call
and talk to my attorney again. "Matt, this is Bob Smith, I need to know if it
possible to get some of Ryan's clothes and his school books from the house or if
the police still have it locked down for the crime scene investigation. Ryan
should be allowed out of the hospital tomorrow and he will need clothes, his
completed homework assignment are there as well." Matt said he would make a
phone call and find out about excess to the house, even if it would be a
supervised police escorted one. I closed my cell phone as Ryan sat staring at
me. "Ryan, my attorney will call back with that information." I watched as
Ryan's stare turned into content smile.

Paul:
After talking to Cody, I sat on the bus trying to figure out a way to let
Frank know how much I appreciated what he was doing for me. I knew that he was
doing this because he wanted to, not because he had too. I most certainly would
not have gotten the perfect grade if Frank hadn't been tutoring me. Frank had
this calm and quiet disposition that was rather deceiving. Dad had told me that
Frank was not a person to take lightly. After working with me for only the last
four days, he had shown me kindness, but also pushed me to excel in math. He
could turn a math problem into a challenge faster than lightning. He also
demanded your respect and attention by his ability to teach. I respect most all
of my teachers. The point is none of those teachers get the respect that Frank
does from me because he is the one who gives as much as he receives. I got off
the bus to find Frank waiting on his porch with a huge smile. I walked up to the
house and followed him inside. We both said hello as we entered. I place my pack
on the floor and took off my sneakers. Frank has a beautiful carpet and I refuse
to wear wet sneakers in his house. I reached in my pack and retrieved the quiz.
I walked to the table where Frank was sitting and laid it on the table in front
of him. "Frank, this is what you have done for me in the last four days. I would
never have gotten a perfect score without your intervention. This is the first
time that I have gotten a perfect score on a quiz or test in math. Thank you
from the bottom of my heart." I hugged Frank so hard that it took his breath
away. I had tears in my eyes as I felt him hug me to him as well.

Frank:
Paul surprised me in many ways today. I had a hard time not crying as he
hugged me. "Paul, you have the ability to do anything that you want in math and
in life. I am only showing you the way to do what is required." "I am the one
who showed you the correct way to do these math problems, but I can't take the
tests or quizzes for you. You are the one that got this mark. I am only a tool
that can help make it happen." "It is now time to add more to your knowledge,
lets get your lesson done and I will take you to visit your new brother."

Dad:
Matt, my attorney called me back and told me that the house was still
under police control. The District Attorney was still investigating the
happenings of yesterday morning. Matt said that he had obtained permission for
me to get Ryan's clothes, Books, and other items that were not needed in the
investigation. Matt told me that he was still working on the other items that I
needed. I watched Paul walk into the hospital room and had to smile as he hugged
both his brothers. Paul turned to me and gave me hug and a kiss on the cheek.

Paul:
Frank dropped me off at the hospital after the math lesson was complete.
I gave everyone a hug and then turned and retrieved the quiz paper from my book
bag. "Dad, I think that you will be happy to see this math that I took today." I
handed the paper to Dad and watched his smile go from ear to ear as he gave me
another hug that I thought would break my ribs. " Dad, be careful, I really need
to breathe here or I will be in a hospital bed next to Ryan." Dad released me
and I heard a laugh from behind me.

Ryan:
"Paul you can get in bed with me anytime that you want, broken ribs or
not." My comment had the whole family smiling. I knew that I had said the right
thing. Cody had told me that Paul had received his first perfect mark in math of
the year. I watch the reaction on my new Dads face and realized that he always
met the challenges laid out. My comment got a smile and a special simple
comment. Not the anger that my real father would have shown.

Dad:
"Ryan, you can share a bed with your brothers, but the rules apply. All
parties must consent to the arrangement and it cannot happen on a school night.
The boys and I will answer all your questions once we get you home."
"Cody, I would like you to go with me to Ryan's old house. You have been
there before and know what he will need from the house. We can go and get his
clothes and books and a few other things." "Paul, you can keep Ryan company
until we get back. We will go home and finish Ryan's room when Cody and I get
back." I called to make the arrangement for Officer Brown to meet us at Ryan's
old home. Cody and I left the hospital after giving Ryan a hug. I could see that
Cody was a little nervous. "Cody, we will get only the things that Ryan will
need immediately, unless you think that there is something that should be
retrieved now." "I asked you to help because you are the one that knows Ryan the
best and can help me make the decision on what we will get for him tonight" I
got only a slight nod of his head. We arrived and Officer Brown was waiting for
us. I listened as he explained what we were allowed to do and not to do. He
handed Cody a pair of vinyl glove and then a set for me as he unlocked the front
door.

Cody:
I was scared and a little surprised when Dad asked me to go to Ryan's with
him. I was scared at what I would see in the house and surprised that Dad would
think that I could be of assistance. I put on my gloves and followed Officer
Brown into the house. Ryan's room was straight across the living room and down a
short hall. Officer Brown led us though the living room, it was a total mess. I
felt my stomach start to churn. We got to Ryan's room and I started looking for
the clothes that he would need. We didn't have anything to put them in, so I put
them on the bed. Ryan had a special team bedspread that his mother had purchased
for his last birthday. "Dad, we can put the clothes on the bed and then we can
wrap them in Ryan's bedspread. It was a gift from his mom, she loved that team
as much as he does. Dad nodded his agreement. I grabbed his school bag and made
sure that all his books were in it. I then looked up and saw one other thing
that would go with us tonight. I reached up and took Ryan's, Harry Potter Book
collection from the shelf and placed them in his school bag. Officer Brown
smiled and nodded his head at my choice. We had everything that we really needed
that night and I was ready to get out of this house. My stomach was still
churning and I had a slight headache. We were there fifteen minutes from start
to finish. Officer helped us get the things outside to the car and I watched and
listened as Dad said "Thank You" to Officer Brown for his help. That was the
last thing that I remember as total blackness surrounded me.
