Ryan, age 9, Cody, age 13, Paul, 14, Bob, 24.

Dad:
Cody had seemed a little scared as we were getting Ryan's things. I
thought that all was going well. Cody seemed to have an idea of the things to
get and the things to leave. I was happy to see him take the book collection and
really amazed at the suggestion that we put the clothes in the bed spread. All
seemed to have gone well until I had said thank you to Officer Brown. I turned
from Officer Brown to see Cody falling. I made a quick jump and caught him
before his head could hit the ground. I frantically checked for a pulse and was
extremely relived when I found it. I held on to Cody and Officer Brown called
for an ambulance. Cody still hadn't regained consciousness when the ambulance
arrived four minutes later. The paramedic did a quick check and then started
asking a number of questions, as we moved Cody to the stretcher in the
ambulance.

Had Cody hit his head during the fall?

N0 I caught him

What had Cody been doing directly before the fall?

Standing waiting for me

What did I think had caused the problem?

STRESS from being in the house where Ryan's parents died
God how stupid I felt, I was to blame for this. I should have known better.

When had he last eaten?

Lunch

Was he allergic to anything, including medications?

No allergies that I know of

I watched as the paramedic broke a small capsule and waved it under Cody's
nose. I watched as Cody came back to consciousness. I could feel the tears start
to fall as his eyes contacted with mine.

Cody:
The next thing that I remember is that awful smell. I had smelled this
before, smelling salts. I came back to our world looking into the concerned and
tear filled eyes of my new Dad. The paramedic smiled at me and asked how I felt.
"I have an upset stomach and a slight headache. I feel like going to bed." I
reached over to touch my dad and he held my hand on the way to the hospital.
They checked me over in the emergency room. The doctor took Dad out of the room
to talk to him. He looked relived when he came back and helped me to get dressed
to go home.

Dad:
I was so relived when Cody took my hand in the ambulance. I couldn't
believe that I had been so stupid. I should have known better than to put Cody
in that situation. He had just lost his parents, his best friends parents had
died in that house. His best friend in the hospital and then I so stupidly add
fuel to the fire, by taking him to help me get Ryan's belongings. We entered the
emergency room and they carefully stripped Cody to his boxers. The doctor
checked him from top to bottom. Cody's blood pressure was high, but that was to
be expected. The doctor asked me out of the room and we talked about Cody. The
doctor agreed that stress had caused the problem, but that it had been building
up ever since his Mom and Dad were killed. I would have to watch him carefully.
He would need medication for his stress if he didn't deal with it. It was
decided that we would get Cody an appointment with a psychologist. I would talk
to Cody and let him know that this was a way for him to release the constant
pressure. It was to give him someone that he could talk to, that could help him
cope better than I could. I would also talk to Paul and Ryan, I think they
should be going as well. We were a family, but I had just learned that the boys
were good at hiding their feelings. I have got to use the resources that are
available, these boys are have been through a nightmare. Now we will get them
help to put their lives back together.
I walked in to the room where Cody was and helped him get dressed. We
thanked everyone in the emergency room and walked hand in hand to Ryan's Room.
Nothing was said during that walk. We found Ryan and Paul quietly talking. A
look of concern crossed Paul's face when he saw the mud on Cody's clothes.

Paul:
I had been expecting Dad and Cody back for a long time and was starting to
get concerned. I was getting ready to call Dad on his cell phone when they
walked into the room. One look at my brother Cody and I knew that something had
happened, he had mud on his clothes.

Cody:
We had just entered Ryan's room and I knew that Paul couldn't miss the mud
on my clothes. I also knew that I couldn't and wouldn't lie to him about had
happened. That was an unwritten rule between us two brothers. "Paul, to make a
long story short, your little brother passed out tonight. I guess that being in
Ryan's house and seeing the mess, remembering Mom and Dad, and so many other
things was too much. I passed out, I was lucky that Dad was there to catch me
before I hit the sidewalk, headfirst. I am tired and need to get home and into
bed as early as possible." I saw the tears in Ryan's eyes and knew that he was
hurting the same as I was.

Dad:
"Cody, Paul, Ryan I am telling you all right now that I am sorry for what
happened to Cody tonight. I should have thought about the possible outcome
before I took him. Cody, you will start seeing Dr. Rick Gray next week. He is a
psychologist, and I think that all you boys need to talk to him. I think that
you all need to talk to him about the things that have happened to your families
and in your lives. I talked to the doctor tonight and we are positive that the
stress of the past three months finally caught up with Cody tonight. I will not
allow this to go on any longer, we will all get the help that is needed and put
this family on firm ground to start our new lives together."

Ryan:
"I just can't seem to forget the things that have happened. I don't know
how to handle them anymore. I keep thinking that Mom will walk through the door
and this nightmare will end. If Dr. Gray can help me understand then I will try
to talk to him."

Paul:
"Dad, I guess that my main problem isn't really, Mom and Dad being gone. I
am more worried about school and my new life. I am worried that if I screw up
that you might not want me any more and that is my main concern. School is
looking better since Frank came into my life. So, I guess that if I can make you
proud of me then you will keep me around."

Dad:
I was completely taken off guard by Ryan and Paul. I thought that they
would argue against going. "Ryan, I will make you an appointment for next week,
if we can get appointments on the same day would be good, but NOT together.
Paul, I will get you an appointment too, maybe he can help you find a little
more peace of mind." "Paul, Cody we need to go home. Ryan needs to sleep and so
do we. We will need to take a taxi to Ryan's house to get my car, since I rode
with Cody in the ambulance." I gave Ryan a hug and promised that I would be
there in the morning. I took my oldest two and headed down the stairs. We called
a taxi and waited quietly for it to arrive. I held both my sons as we were
driven to my car and quietly made sure that Cody was all right as we got into my
car a few minutes later.
We arrived home at a quarter past nine and I led the boys into the living
room. I pulled them both down on the couch, one on each side of me. "Boys, I am
worried about something that Paul said tonight. I put an arm around boys and
pulled them to me. Paul, it makes no difference to me if you fail a test or get
in trouble. I might punish you for getting into trouble, BUT there is nothing
that you can or will do that will make me not want you around me for the rest of
my life." I kissed both boys and sent Paul up to get his shower, I kept Cody
with me on the couch. "Cody, I am sorry for what I did to you tonight. I should
have thought about everything more carefully. You could have been very seriously
hurt if I hadn't caught you. Please forgive me for putting you in danger, I will
try to do better."

Cody:
"Dad, There is really no reason for you to take all the blame for what
happened tonight. I should have told you that things have been troubling me. I
knew that my stomach was giving me trouble as soon as we were in the house. I
should have gotten out then, but no I had to be macho and stay. I forgive you
for everything, but remember that I am going to be working on getting better
about telling you my feelings." Paul walked into the room in his boxers and gave
Dad and me a hug before he went to bed. I gave Dad a hug and went off to take my
shower.

Dad:
I watched as Cody left the room to take his nightly shower. I was still
mad at myself for not thinking about the feelings that these boys were obviously
hiding. I went to the kitchen and had a cup of coffee to help settle my nerves.
Cody came in and gave me a hug and said good night as he went off to bed. I sat
at the table and thought of the events of the past week. The whole week had
moved at the speed of light. I wasn't really in control of much at all, just
gliding along the path as it was. I now came to the realization that it was time
to do some planning. If I was to keep these three boys alive and get them all
well, then I had to start being more aware of what they felt. I had to start
somewhere, so a schedule for the next day seemed appropriate. I grabbed a note
pad and started my to do list.
1) Take boys to school
2) Return home to wait for the furniture truck (9:00)
3) Go to hospital to be with Ryan and bring him home if released
4) Call and check on store
5) Get Cody from School (2:30)
6) Get Paul from Frank's (5:00)
7) Homework for boys
8) Cook Supper (boys clean up)
9) Family Discussion with boys and watch TV
10) Bathes or showers for the boys (9:00)
11) Bed Time for boys (10:00) (Ryan's Pain Medicine)

As I looked at the list in front of me, I realized that this list was to
be a normal routine from this day forward. With minor changes this list was my
new life and I certainly hope that I can meet the challenge. I looked at the
clock and realized that it was one o'clock in the morning. I had better get to
bed. I went to Paul's room and checked on him. He was sound asleep and looked
like he was have a good dream by the expression on his face. I then walked to
Cody's room to check on him. Cody was also asleep, but as was normal, he was as
naked as the minute he was born and not a blanket covering him. I carefully
covered him with his two favorite blankets and went to my room. I stripped and
fell into bed to an uneasy sleep, awaking a number of times.

Paul:
I awoke to my alarm clock ringing. I slowly got out of bed and pulled on
my boxers. I walked down the hall and into Cody's room. I had to grin, my little
brother was naked, spread eagle on his bed, all his blankets were on the floor.
I quiet spoke to him and woke him up. Cody followed me to the kitchen and I made
coffee for Dad. Cody got the cereal and milk out along with the juice. We sat
and talked quietly about Cody's medical problem from last night. It surprised us
that Dad hadn't appeared by the time we had finished our breakfast, he normally
ate with us. Cody and I went to our rooms and got dressed for school. I looked
into Dad's room and he was still asleep. Cody and I talked about leaving for
school and letting him sleep, but decided that he wouldn't like that. I walked
over to the side of his bed and gently rub his arm as I spoke to him. His eyes
opened and were confused when I spoke. "Dad, Cody and I are ready for school.
Would you like us to ride the bus today?" he was out of bed and getting dressed
in a minute.

Dad:
Paul's touch and question confused me at first. I then realized that the
alarm clock had never gone off, because I hadn't set it. " No boy's, I'll take
you to school and we will plan on the way." The time was half past seven. I
grabbed my coat and was opening the front door when Cody handed me a travel mug.
I gave both boys a hug and we went to the car, and off to school. I took a sip
from the cup and was in heaven. Coffee, milk and sugar all in proper
proportions. "Cody this coffee is great, thank you for getting it for me." "Paul
I will pick you up from Franks at five o'clock.

Paul:
Sounds like a good plan to me. If you need to change it for any reason
then leave a message with Frank. He will give me the message when I get there
this afternoon.

Dad:
Cody, I will pick you up after school at half past two. That will give you
long enough to get Ryan's new homework assignments.

Cody:
"Dad, why don't we change your plan a little? I like the plan but think
that there may be a small problem. The problem is a nine-year-old boy. Ryan
should get out of the hospital today. If he does get out he would need to ride
to school to get me and back home. I know that he is still in pain from his
beating and won't be comfortable riding in the car. I think that if Ryan comes
home that I should ride the bus home. It will save you gasoline and Ryan the
pain of sitting in the car for that long. I can stay with Ryan at home while you
get Paul from Frank's house. If Ryan can't come home today then you can leave a
message in the Guidance Office, that you are picking me up to visit Ryan. I will
get the message at the same time as I pick-up Ryan's homework."

Dad:
I guess that all good planners need an assistant to keep them on track.
Cody was playing the devil's advocate this morning and winning. "Cody, your plan
is better than mine is, so we go with your plan for the day. If something
happens that you need a ride for any reason then call me." I watched as the boys
ran into the school to begin their day.
My drive back home was totally uneventful. I sat down in the kitchen and
had a bowl of cold cereal and another cup of coffee for my breakfast. I walked
through the house doing a few of those little things that always are forgotten.
I checked the boy's rooms for dirty cloths and found that the rooms were clean
and Paul's bed was made and a note on Cody's said he would remake it when he
arrived home. It looked like he had wrestled an alligator in his sleep last
night. I went to the laundry room and started a load of clothes in the washer. I
had just finished with the washer, when the doorbell rang. I found the furniture
truck in my driveway. An hour later the truck and movers were gone and I had a
new bed ready for its occupant. I looked at the clock and decided to get ready
to go to the hospital. I went to Ryan's new dresser and open the first drawer. I
got out a clean set of socks and a pair of boxers. Next drawer down and I found
a running suit with elastic waistband and matching coat for a top. I found a
large tee shirt and his sneakers. I placed all of my selections in his sports
bag, and I was ready to go.

Ryan:
I watched my new family leave last night and I was a little worried about
Cody. I felt lost without someone to talk to. The nurse came in and said that I
was allowed to take a shower if I wanted, other wise she was going to give me a
sponge bath. It took totally no brains, what that answer was to be. I most
certainly didn't need her to help me let alone see me naked. I too my time and
enjoyed a brief but relaxing shower. I couldn't stand the water to be as hot as
usual, but I survived and was a lot cleaner. I went back to my bed and tried to
watch television for a while. Everything seemed to be Cops and murder, I
couldn't watch those without crying for my Mom. I shut the television off and
played the game system until the nurse came in and gave me a shot of pain
medication. I rolled over on my stomach and faded off to sleep.
I never woke up or heard a thing last night. The next thing I remember is
at seven o'clock this morning when that crazy nurse came in to take my pulse.
You would think that they would let a patient sleep, but you follow their
schedule. I had my temperature check and my blood pressure was taken. Then she
left a plastic cup on the stand and told me to pee in that when I was ready. She
left to harass the next sleeping kid patient down the hall and I got up to fill
the cup. My breakfast showed up and I quietly ate while silently hoping that I
could leave this place. It is a nice place to visit, but I wanted out of here.
The doctor came in and we went through the same procedure as with the nurse. I
answered all his questions and told him about the pain that I still am having.
The pain is better today, but still unbearable at times. The doctor finally said
those words that I wanted to hear, "you can go home, but no school for ten days
and no gym class for a month." I asked him why so long on the gym class and he
said he wanted me completely healed before I started back and some of my bottom
had been marked deeply. I guess that I can live with that.

Dad:
I found Ryan sitting on the bed waiting for me. He quietly informed me
that he could leave as soon as I signed the release papers and I had seen the
doctor about his medications. I handed him the sports bag, "Ryan, I picked this
out in the hope that it will not hurt you to wear. Blue jeans are a little tight
and you don't want that right now. You get into these clothes and I will take
care of the papers and doctor." I left and found the doctor and talked to him
about Ryan's treatment and medications. I signed the papers and was ready to
take my boy home.

Ryan:
My new dad left the room to sign my release paper and I got into the
clothes that he had brought for me to wear. He sure did a good job of picking,
because everything fit loose enough that I had no problems with them rubbing the
wrong places. I was ready to walk out the door, when a nurse came in and
informed me that the wheelchair she was pushing was mine. Hospital policy was
that I must ride in the wheel chair to the Dad's car. OK, I can except that, at
least I was going home.

Dad:
Ryan and I talked all the way home. I talked about the funeral
arrangements that were in place for his Mom and Dad. Friday was calling hours
for friends and neighbors. Saturday morning was the funeral for both parents. I
pulled to the side of the road and held Ryan while he cried. I wanted this part
of his life to disappear, but it was not going to be easy. We needed to get him
into therapy and on with his life. We arrived home and I started showing my new
son around. He loved everything about the house and was amazed at his new room.
I told him of my plan for a family time each night and he thought that would be
a good thing. Ryan curled up on his new bed and decided to take a nap. I went to
find something for lunch and to make some phone calls.
The manager of the store said that all was going well, but we needed to
place an order for supplies and a special order computer system. I listened and
then authorized her to do the transaction.
I talked to my attorney and got the final word on Cody and Paul's family estate.
Matt was still working on everything to do with Ryan, he said it was a legal
nightmare. The only part that was settled was that Ryan was mine to keep and the
social services agreed it was for the best. I found some Ravioli for Ryan to
have for lunch and I had a salad. I woke the boy up at two o'clock and gave him
his dinner and he played the game system till Cory walked in with his homework
from school. Ryan jumped on the schoolwork and had his done before Cody could
complete half of his. I left Cody in charge of Ryan while I went get Paul from
Frank's house. Supper was in the slow cooker, a small turkey breast. Paul came
out and got in the car when I pulled into the driveway. The lesson had gone well
and Frank had decided that due to the funeral on Friday that there was no lesson
tomorrow or Friday. If Paul needed help with homework he could call or stop in.
Paul and I got home and Ryan had to show the boys his new bedroom. They liked
the new bedroom furniture. The boys started playing the game system, so I went
to the kitchen to finish preparing our supper. I had just started peeling
potatoes when an arm was around my waist.

Cody:
I saw my new dad sneak out of the room after we started the game system. I
had a feeling that he was going to the kitchen to work on supper. I told Paul to
take care of little brother and teach him the game he wanted to learn. I was
going down and assist in the kitchen. I put my hands around him and asked. "Dad,
what can I do to help you get supper ready?"

Dad:
"You can go to the freezer, get a package of peas and carrots, then put
them in a dish to warm up in the microwave. Then you can set the table with
everything that we need for the meal." I had to smile as Cody went to work
getting the jobs done that I asked him to do.

Cody:
I went to the freezer and got the vegetables and put them in the dish. I
put them in the microwave and set the time for twenty minutes. I went to the
cupboard and got plates, glasses, and silverware from the drawer. I got out the
butter, salt and pepper. I grabbed the dill pickles and put them on the table as
well thinking that they sounded good to me. Dad had just finished with the
potatoes as I finished setting the table.

Dad:
Cody had done a fast and accurate job of setting the table. All was ready
all that was needed was the food to be done. Turkey was done, vegetable and
potatoes were in the process. Cody and I sat down and talk about computers until
the microwave announced that it was done. I check on the potatoes and found that
they were almost ready. I got the turkey out of the pan and Cody asked to slice
it. "Cody you may slice it, just don't slice anything except the turkey." I
grabbed what I needed and made gravy for our potatoes. When the gravy was
finished, I drained the water from the potatoes and mashed them. Cody put the
sliced turkey on the table, along with the vegetable and the gravy. I finished
the potatoes and put those on the table. Cody went to call his brothers to the
table. Supper went very well and was enjoyed by all. The boys cleared the table
and placed the dishes in the dishwasher. The boys and I enjoyed talking and
playing the game system until it was time for showers. Paul decided to go first
tonight and was followed by Cody. Ryan was a surprised kid when Paul came into
the room with just a towel on to say Good Night to the two of us. I gave Paul a
hug and he was off to bed. Cody followed fifteen minutes later. Ryan decided to
take a shower as well, so I watched the news on television until he came out of
the bathroom. "Ryan, We have a special lotion that the doctor gave to me to put
on your back and bottom. It is to help you heal without drying out and cracking
and also has a mild pain killer in it." If it all right with you then we can get
your pain medicine and anti-biotic and then we will go to your room and I can
rub some of this on to back and bottom."

Ryan:
The shower that night felt great, I almost hated to get out of the tub.
Dad seemed a little embarrassed as he told me about the lotion. I didn't tell
him that the doctor had already explained about it to me that morning. I was
wondering if Dad would put it on for me. I was too scared of him saying NO to
ask him. I went to the kitchen with Dad and got my medications and we went to my
room. Dad closed and locked the front door and was shutting off lights as we
went. I lay down on my bed with the towel under me and watched Dad come into the
room. Dad had a smile on his face that turned to a slight frown as he looked at
the damage that had been done to me. His gentle hands soon took away any doubt
of my New Dads ability and how much he cared for me. I faded off to sleep as Dad
applied the lotion. Dreaming of my new life and what could happen to me in the
future.
