Right behind him was JJ's mother. It was the first time I'd seen her in daylight. Her face looked aged beyond her years and she had no makeup on. JJ said nothing as we parked. The three of us got out of the car and she came running to him and put her arms around him. "Where have you been? I've been so worried!" she said frantically. If you'd never seen her being mean to him, you would have sworn she was genuinely upset and worried for him. He just stood there lifelessly as she carried on. "Mom, I was at school," he finally said. Hoarsely, she said, "I came home and you weren't there in the middle of the night. I kept waiting all night and you didn't come home!" I walked over to dad and the officer. "Dad, didn't you tell her JJ called and left her a message?" Dad pulled me aside. "Let them take care of this. It's not our business." Dad didn't realize how bad it was at home for JJ. He motioned for Jeff and me to follow him inside. I stared through the window watching JJ's mother make gestures like hugging him and kissing him on the cheek. The officer was talking to both of them before JJ walked up to our door and came inside. "The cop is taking us home," he said. "I need to go get my stuff." I followed him to my room. "I'm gonna leave this here. Try to read it." he asked. He handed me a tattered old paperback. "I'm sorry you gotta go back. She's really acting differently." "Yeah, she's probably back on her meds or took too many of one of her pills. Just wait until her next binge and she'll be back to the way you saw her before." I put my arm around him but he pushed it away as if he was mad at me. I decided that he was just mad because he had to go back. I didn't take it personally. Minutes later, he and his mother were in the police car riding back to their house. I became depressed just after he left, but then dad called us to the living room and gave us some news to make me feel even shittier. - - - We both sat on the couch while dad sat in his chair facing us. "Hey guys, you've probably noticed I've been kind of stressed lately. Well, yesterday, we finally got told officially about layoffs. That's what our big meeting was about. I didn't feel it was a good time to tell you with your buddy here having his own troubles. After today, I'm unemployed." "What? That's so fucked up! That's such bullshit!" Jeff said. "Normally I'd say watch your mouth, but you're damn right about it," dad said. "You've worked there over twenty years! Shouldn't they lay off the new guys?" I asked. "Doesn't always work that way, son. I get paid a lot more than those new guys. They're pinching every penny. I would have accepted a pay cut instead, but they didn't ask." We sat there stunned. Dad looked vulnerable as he sat there slumped over with his fingers in his hair. For the first time, he looked his age. The light from the yellow lamp shade made the random streaks of gray in his hair seem blonde. However, the trick of the light didn't hide the lines under his eyes from being more prominent than before. "I got a severance package...got paid a week of pay for each of my years there. I'm gonna have to get out there and get any job right away to keep some regular money coming in. I don't wanna have to touch that money unless we have to." "Can't you get unemployment pay?" Jeff asked. "Yes, that's a back up, but it won't start immediately. I don't feel secure sitting around living only on that...plus I'll have to wait for all the processing and paperwork bullshit before that even begins. I'll find me a job." - - - No one was in the mood to cook. Dad said we should go out to eat as it will be the last time we can spend on something like that for a while. He drove us to our favorite Mexican restaurant where he told us to order whatever we wanted. I chose the enchiladas that I always ordered, but it was hard to enjoy them. Dad tried to perk up and joke around, but Jeff and I just ate didn't really talk. Aside from dad losing his job, I was thinking about what JJ was going through at home. I wondered if his mom turned on him once the police had left. I wouldn't know any details until Monday. - - - In the end, JJ's mom remained stable until her next episode a week later and then life was back to the way it was. Before turning for the worse again, she'd told him she was upset that he ran away. It was never clear what had happened that day that the cops came over. JJ had left her the message the night before and dad had spoken to her during the day to tell her JJ spent the night there. It was like she didn't even remember or acknowledge it. When the cops were at our house she spoke as if she'd been worried for hours with no word from JJ at all. I couldn't begin to understand his mother's mental issues. At least he had someone he could talk to about it with me. Sometimes he opened up and sometimes he said nothing. Apparently her issues were affecting his own moods. I tried to get him to speak his feelings, but he kept everything bottled up. I was not a psychologist, but I could understand better why he vented his anger at others in the form of being an asshole. - - - As Thanksgiving neared, dad hadn't found a job yet. He sent out several resumes for plant manager jobs or any roles that were similar to his job before he was promoted. He got either no responses or letters stating that the position applied for had been filled. He drove into the city and applied for unemployment benefits. It was clearly a blow to his pride. After that, he went to several places in the city and applied for welding and construction jobs. I feared the holidays were going to be shitty because of dad being out of work. Thanksgiving was up first and we were all invited to Dave and Dean's place for dinner. I asked if JJ could come and Dave was cool with that. The five of us were going to be crammed into their small place along with two friends of theirs, Grant and Ricky. I knew dad wasn't in a "holiday" kind of mood, but going would be better than him having him sit at home drinking or sleeping all day. On Thanksgiving Day, I drove over to JJ's at eleven and picked him up. His place was in the opposite direction we were going. Dad argued that we could pick him up on our way, but I emphasized JJ was embarrassed about his place (and picking him up alone gave me a chance to talk privately). As usual, he waited out at the curb for me. He got into the car and smiled big when he got in. "Hey bud!" he said. "Your mom know you're going?" "Yeah, I told her and she just said ok and turned back over in bed. I wrote down your number in case anything comes up...was that okay?" he asked. "Sure man...no worries" Of course we didn't want a repeat of her last episode. "Should we ask her if she wants to come too?" I offered. "Naw, she'd rather sleep I'm sure." I shrugged my shoulders and drove on. Soon we were back at home and all of us got into dad's truck. It was dad's first time to be around JJ since the day the police came over. Dad acted normally and JJ seemed to be comfortable around him. I saw Jeff glaring at JJ in the rear view mirror until I made eye contact with him and he looked away. The day before he'd told me he was cool with JJ and hanging but I felt some tension coming from him anyway. Apparently, the grudge was still there. After less than half an hour, we arrived at Dean's. We parked on the street in front of the main house. Just as we were walking onto the path of flat stones to reach the gate, the front door opened. "Happy Thanksgiving...come on and go through the house!" One of the gay men who owned the house directed us inside. His partner was just inside vacuuming in jogging shorts and a tight, white t-shirt. I could see his balls moving in his shorts each time he moved the vacuum cleaner. "We're having our friends over for dinner--come help yourself to a beer." he said to dad. He took dad by the arm and led him to a small bar in the kitchen. He was the more butch than his partner and had muscular arms with a nice butt. The other one stopped vacuuming and shook our hands. We'd met them before, but we all introduced ourselves again. "I'd offer you guys something to eat but I think the boys would get mad at us--they're really hard at work over there." Dad took the bottle of beer from the original guy that had greeted us. The bottle was clear enough to show it contained a dark beer--clearly not an American label. The two older guys raised their bottles in a toast with dad and said, "Cheers!" As their bottles clinked, I noticed the room growing darker and looked out the back window. "They say there's a storm on the way," said the guy that had been vacuuming. He'd seen me staring at the window as it went dark. I just nodded. Dad and the older men made some small talk and then we headed out back to Dean and Dave's small apartment. Dave greeted us at the door and hugged each one of us. I introduced JJ to him. JJ awkwardly held out his hand to be shaken, but Dave gave him a quick "man hug" instead. Dave introduced Dean to JJ and they walked over to the kitchen area while we all sat down. Dad went to go take a piss. Jeff got up and talked to Dean. The back of Dave faced us. He was in denim shorts that framed his bubble butt perfectly. His t-shirt was skin tight. "Damn hot isn't he?" I asked JJ. "Oh yeah...very much so." he laughed. "Dave's a damn good cook too," I said. "I wasn't talking about him...I was talking about your older brother. He's gorgeous." "Hey, don't make me jealous dude!" I teased. He suddenly looked offended. "I'm just kidding. You know that--you dork!" I teased. His expression softened up and again with a look of relief. His defensiveness really surprised me. I wasn't mad about him ogling Dean. He'd seriously thought I was jealous. "It's cool man," he said. Immediately after that, dad came back and sat next to me and JJ on the couch. Just then, Ricky and Grant were knocking on the door. They came inside; each carrying bottles of some kind of booze and a cake. Another round of introductions followed. A lot of conversation began as everyone sat in the tiny living room. Grant and Ricky sat on the love seat and Dean and Dave sat on extra stools. Jeff sat in the floor by Dean. I noticed that everyone was very nice to JJ. Anytime that a forlorn, lost look appeared on his face, someone asked him a question or made a comment to him. No one left him out. We heard a timer beeping from the kitchen and Dave jumped up to go take care of it. Soon he started bringing out dishes of food. The smaller dishes were followed by a giant, golden turkey. All of the food was placed on the dining table. We all helped ourselves buffet style. Besides turkey, there was stuffing, deviled eggs, green beans, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, wheat rolls, etc. However, each traditional item had something special done to it. The deviled eggs had jalapeno peppers, the green beans had chunks of bacon added and so on. Dave had put his personal touch on most all of it. "You didn't customize the stuffing?" Jeff asked. "It looks normal." He sniffed it before putting it in his mouth as if it would tell him if the seasonings were exotic or not. "Hell no, that one stays just like mom fixes it!" I stood in back with JJ and we helped ourselves last. My reason for doing so was to keep everyone from seeing how much food I put on my plate before they got a chance to fix their own. My Styrofoam plate was so full that it had to be reinforced with another plate underneath it. JJ generously filled his plate with turkey and stuffing. We grabbed some plastic cups and filled them with sweetened iced tea. "Damn, this is great!" JJ mumbled with food in his mouth. "I know!" I said with a mouthful of food. We just filled our bellies and listened to the others talk. Dean talked about school and a new art project. Dave and Ricky talked about their food truck business with dad. Jeff boasted about winning Track medals (I had not done so well in recent competitions). I didn't say much and kept eating. Grant asked JJ what his hobbies were. "Uhh, well I guess I don't have any." he said awkwardly. "What you do like to do to escape...what do you do for fun?" Grant asked. "Well, I love to read," he said. "Who's your favorite author?" JJ began to name several writers that I'd never heard of. Grant and Ricky commented on all of them but I had no clue who they were talking about. It kind of made me feel dumb. Literature at school bored the living shit out of me. The only authors I knew about where those of trendy books at the store I worked at. The best sellers section by the checkout at work had stories about Vampires and what not. They continued on discussing other novels and authors while I kept eating. Dave looked over at me and winked. I knew he wasn't a reader except for some military and Sci-Fi books. I figured their talk was going over his head too. Just after he winked, he burst in with sports talk and the group conversation topic changed. It slowly broke again into several conversations during which I got up for more iced tea and second helpings. "Damn, I don't know how you two eat so much and stay so freaking' skinny!" Dean said. I ignored his comment aimed towards me and Jeff and continued refilling my plate. I sat down again and ate while the others talked. When I shoved the last bit of green beans into my mouth, I figured I was totally stuffed and couldn't eat another bite. That was until Ricky opened a cardboard box and pulled out an extremely decadent chocolate cake. It had two different icings, sprinkles of shaved milk chocolate, and three layers. I ate a piece of cake and knew I was done for sure. Just then, Dave sat out a plate of homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. I groaned at the thought of trying to eat another bite. "Don't worry dude, I'll send some of these home with you guys." He gave me a playful pat on the ass followed by a slight squeeze...and then I burped. My appetite for food was zero, but my craving for sex was constant. Just the grab to my backside was enough to make my dick stir. JJ wasn't looking, so I didn't worry about him overacting about it. I looked back at Dave's butt as he was wiping the table and moving stuff to the kitchen. I remembered well how he taught me certain things...how to kiss, how to suck a cock the right way, etc. I specially remembered how fun it was to eat that muscular ass. A memory of Dave fucking me on his bed wearing just athletic socks and a jock at his knees was the trigger. I excused myself to run to the bathroom to piss. I quickly jacked off instead. - - - Ricky and Grant left right after dessert so they could attend some other holiday function. Just after that, Dean took JJ, Jeff, and I upstairs to look at new drawings and photos of art projects at school. I noticed the upstairs had been repainted again, but the original artwork and furniture remained. I felt envious of Dean and Dave having their very own place. JJ seemed fascinated with Dean's art...or maybe he was just fascinated by Dean. Instead of being jealous, it made me horny again. Feeling mischievous, I spoke after Dean finished talking about one of his drawings. "If you like art, check this out!" I told JJ. I moved to the side of Dean and lifted up the back of his shirt to expose all of the tattoos. The centerpiece, a colorful dragon, took his breath away. "Wow, that's so fucking cool!" JJ gasped. Dave called out to Dean and he went downstairs to help him with something. I grabbed JJ's crotch and it was semi-hard. His face went red but I kept fondling him until we heard Dean coming back up the steep stairs. JJ turned away embarrassed and pulled the material around his crotch to adjust his penis. He pulled his shirt down over it quickly. Dean showed us digital drawings of a proposed college project on his computer and then we headed back downstairs. Dave was done with some of the food cleanup and we all sat down in the living area. He waved a DVD in the air and grinned. "I have a surprise for y'all...watch this!" He turned on his DVR and clicked the remote several times. All of us sat in suspense until the video started. It was a cooking show that was popular on cable TV. Dave kept fast forwarding and scanning through it until it was nearly over. He let it play at that point. "So, with the food truck popularity skyrocketing---" the host began. "Look right there!" Dave shouted. The camera quickly panned several parked food trucks in one quick move. Dave hit the pause button and pointed to the screen. "That's us! We were on TV!" It was hard to even read the name Twisted Tacos on the side of the truck. He reversed it and replayed the shot. At regular speed, their food truck was on the screen for like two seconds. Dave looked so smug and proud. "So now, I'm putting a sign up on our menu that says, 'as seen on the Food Network'," he said. "Yeah, seen for the blink of an eye!" Jeff remarked. I hit him in the arm. "Ow!" he shouted. "You don't have to be such a dick!" I told him. Dad rolled his eyes at my remark. Dave just laughed. "Well, two seconds or not the statement is true!" he laughed. While I was outwardly happy for Dave and Dean, personally I felt a little intimidated. They seemed so successful and good at whatever they tried. God knows they had their problems in between, but things always turned out good. I thought about my future and wondered if I'd be working at the grocery store forever. I had no desire to go to college but I had no clue what to do otherwise. I was so sick of school and all of it's rules and stuff. All of us chatted for awhile longer after the food mess was cleaned up, but I was feeling very sleepy. We all were. Dad finally stood up and told Dean and Dave that we were heading out. Dave busily began wrapping up a ton of turkey for us to take back home along with some of the other left over food--including the cookies. I took one of the loaded, covered paper plates and walked out to the truck with everyone. We'd been having such a good time that no one had noticed the stormy weather had come and gone. As we left, the sky was gray but not as ominous as before. There was a light mist of rain still falling. It was cold but relaxing. I looked up at the sky while the truck was being unlocked and felt the droplets hit my eyelids. I looked over at JJ after we were settled in the back seat. He looked calm and happy. Dad started the ignition and we were on our way home. Out of view from the front seat, I slid my hand over to JJ's lap and he grasped it firmly. Instead of me taking JJ home from our house, Dad offered to take him directly. I'd wanted to be alone with him before taking him home, but dad blew the chance. It seemed dad still didn't realize JJ was my boyfriend. JJ gave dad directions into town. As we drove up to his house, dad stopped on the street and let him out. I watched the grim house fade away in the driver side mirror. - - - During the week following Thanksgiving, JJ's mom had a semi-stable period in which she was taking some kind of new medication. He and I went to a movie on a Wednesday evening. It was a flick that had been out for a while but he didn't have money or transportation to go see on his own. We went to the matinee showing. We were seated on time and sat alone in the back of the theatre. After the movie previews and endless commercials, our movie finally started. When his knee pushed up against mine, my dick got hard. We held hands as the movie started. There were only a few people in the theatre and the closest couple was several rows away. Horniness got the best of me and I moved my hand to his crotch. He didn't stop me. I massaged his dick and balls through his jeans. My own dick felt constrained. In a ballsy move, I unzipped my pants and pulled my dick halfway out and jacked it. I slid my left hand up and into the waist of his jeans. I felt his bush right away. I felt his hand reaching slowly to my own crotch and he gasped when he felt my cock already out. "Oh my god! Someone's gonna see!" he whispered. The theatre had stadium style seating with entrances on either side by the screen down below. The front seats were the lowest point and one had to walk up stairs on either side to get to the back. Having been to that theatre so many times, I knew you could see nothing much when you looked back from a seat close to the screen. "It's too dark!" I whispered back. It took awhile, but I managed to slowly unsnap his jeans and pull the zipper down. Before he could react, I slid to the dirty floor on my knees and began sucking his dick. He gripped the arms of the seats and closed his eyes. The scant light from the movie screen made his face look exotic. I sucked his dick quietly but extremely fast with my head bobbing up and down discreetly behind the seat. He didn't last but a few minutes and then my mouth was filled with his jizz. I sat up in my seat and openly jacked my dick (which was still out). I spit on it and the thrill of doing such a thing in a public place made me cum right away. I shot my load onto the seat in front of me. I calmly zipped up and sat there but JJ became very nervous and kept looking around. I licked my lips and tasted his come from the corner of my mouth. "What if the guys in the projector room saw us....or maybe they have night vision cams." "They would have come in here by now dude!" I whispered back. Once I'd shot my load I was able to concentrate on the movie--but he wasn't. His body language displayed nervousness. "You wanna go?" I asked. "Yeah." I was kind of pissed to have wasted the money, but the main thing I wanted to do was hang out with him. We quietly grabbed our jackets and headed down the stairs. We took the exit that was away from the concession area and walked out into the cold wind. "That was hot, huh?" I asked. "Yeah, but after it was over I got paranoid." "It's cool. You wanna just drive around until the time the movie would be over?" "Yeah, sure...sounds good," he replied. We drove around past the mall and into town. We had eaten a ton of popcorn before the movie already started, so neither of us was hungry. We stopped at a Sonic and got a large Coke to share. We stayed there and just chatted. "Do you want to go to college?" I asked. "Where did that come from?" he said. "I don't know. When we were at Dean's I was feeling kind of jealous at how talented they are...they're so smart. Dave's a great mechanic and has his own business. Dean's an artist and smart on his own. I have no fucking talent--ain't good at nothing. I hate school. I was good at track and running, but now I'm falling behind in that." "So you don't know what you wanna do with your life?" he joked. "No...I don't." "Well join the club. I'm good at nothin'. If it were up to me I'd sit around all day and read books. They're so much better than movies or TV. You can totally escape in to other worlds." he said. "I heard one of the guys ask you if you wanted to be a writer or book editor when we were at Dean's." "Yeah, well I can't afford college and my grades suck. You gotta go to a university for anyone to take you seriously. You gotta learn the right way to write." he said. "I guess." He drank the rest of the Coke until we heard the slurping sound of only air being drawn in the straw. "We better get back. I don't want her to bitch at me for coming in late if she's awake." I started the car and drove him home. As we neared the corner to his street, red and blue lights flickered around the corner. Once on his street, we saw the lights were at his house. "What the fuck?" he said. We pulled up behind a police car. The truck of his mom's boyfriend was in the driveway. Behind it was an ambulance. Before I could put the car in park, JJ was out of the door. I turned off the ignition and ran after him. As we trampled through branches and dead leaves, two paramedics with a stretcher came walking swiftly. A police woman came up to JJ swiftly. The figure on the stretcher had a white sheet draped over them. My first thoughts were that his mother had been beaten up by the boyfriend or something. The police woman tried to ask JJ if he was Grace Myers' son. His mother's boyfriend came running out of the house up to JJ and interrupted the female cop. "I came over to see your mama and she wouldn't answer the door. I went in and just found her like this!" he said. Another cop pulled the boyfriend to the edge of the yard. The flickering lights on the ambulance went to a solid white light. "Yeah, my mom is Grace. What happened? What are they doing?" "Come with me, young man, let's go inside," the female officer said. JJ numbly followed her into the house. I stood on the steps and heard her speak. "Young man, I'm sorry to tell you your mom's boyfriend found your mother unconscious. The paramedics did everything they could, but she has passed way. They feel she may have overdosed." I walked into the house and saw him standing there with a pale face and a stunned look. He looked right at me the look on his face was painful to see. I knew there was no one there that cared about him but me, so I walked up to him and put my arm around him. I stood there not moving as he began to cry on my shoulder. His sobs became louder and I tried to hold him tighter. The police woman looked like she was about to cry herself. "I'm his best friend," I told her. My voice was shaky and I felt nauseous. My own eyes got watery as I thought about my own mom. He stood there crying for another minute until I led him to the frayed, dirty couch and we sat down. The police woman began to ask him some questions and I told him that I'd be right back. I went outside and called dad. He said JJ could spend the night there or I could stay there with him. Dad was very understanding. I hung up the phone and took a deep breath. In the cold air, I swallowed hard and walked back into that bleak house. The police had asked for JJ's closest living relative. He told the cops of a great aunt. He'd never spoken to me about her. He said there was no one else. They agreed to let him go home with me and took all of my information. He wasn't yet an adult legally, so the court would have to name a guardian for him according to the police. After over an hour had passed, JJ got his things and put them in the car. We drove to my house saying very little. In the darkness, he grabbed my hand tightly. To be continued...
