Chapter 13

Pizza for dinner

It was 2:30 Friday afternoon when I got home and the house was clean and
the wash was on the clothes line, the weather dried clothing in short
order, as I walked in the boys were sitting around watching the education
channel and Todd as trying to explain something to them with a large piece
of paper and multi color felt tip pens, and they were giving him a hard
time but he was softly trying to explain something without losing his cool,
and with these boys that was sometimes a hard job.

I said hello and was totally ignored, so I walked to the clothes line and
retrieved the clothing mainly underwear, sleep shorts and shirts some pairs
of Levi's and I put them on the bed, I folded them and as I put them away
Todd and the boys peeked around the corner and stood open mouthed Todd said
"why did you bring the wash in, I would have" I looked at them and said
"you guys were busy and I am not a cripple so I brought it in and it's
folded and I now will put it away" as I did they took the clothing and
helped as we finished Todd looked at me and said "the wash was part of our
chores and we didn't finish so we won't expect you to take us for pizza" I
looked at them and I walked into the living room turned the TV off and sat
in my chair as I did Todd sat cross legged on the floor in front of me and
Mike and Adam sat on both sides of him as they did I carefully looked at
the three of them smiled and said "the only chore that I need you all to do
is look out for each other and grow up clean and strong, without drugs,
alcohol and to be free of any fatal disease, other than that you are my
sons in a way that Donald and Peter can never understand" they let out a
collective sigh and before I could move Adam was in my lap with his arms
around my neck and Mike was kissing my cheek, Todd was standing with tear's
in his eyes.

I stood and put Adam in my chair as I moved away I looked back and said "I
am going to rest before dinner and if you can keep the noise below the pain
threshold, it would be appreciated" they smiled and turned the TV on and
turned the sound down low. I removed my shoes and sox pants and outer shirt
as I did the bed looked good and within seconds I was sleeping.

The poet says that sleep is the thread that knits the raveled sleeves, but
well I am not as versed in poetry as I wish I was but when I woke it was
dark and I was hungry I looked at the bedroom clock an it was 7:21 and I
listened for sounds from the house, all was too quiet much too quiet, I
went to the bathroom and relived my self and as I listened the sound of
boys coming in to the house made me feel that all was 'OK' so I dressed and
as I emerged from the bedroom the boys were sitting on the couch all I said
was "pizza" and they had the truck keys and my baseball cap in there hands
as we walked out and headed to the Pizza Hut, they sang an old camping song
99 bottles of beer, in a few minutes we arrived, and after I ordered a
giant meat lovers pizza and we settled into a booth, I served the pitcher
of Coke that I had picked up, as we waited I spoke softly to the boys, and
told them to carefully observe the boy that would be bringing our order.

At that moment he came out of the kitchen carrying a tray for an other
table, he was dressed as I remembered cotton shorts a T-shirt and sandals
no sox and his feet looked as if they were not washed in a long time the
boys watched as he went by and Todd said "god he is beautiful" Adam and
Mike were nonplused and a little green, and with the look of a green eyed
monster Mike said "he is nothing special" and Adam was about to say
something except my look silenced him, I looked at Mike as I gently put my
hand on top of his and said "you were nothing special on the rainy night
that I took you in" if I could see his toes I think they would have blushed
as much as the remainder that I could see at that moment.

Silence was in effect as the boy delivered the pizza to our table and the
silence rule didn't effect there appetites, the pizza was gone in a few
minutes, the following was the time in my life that I think that I was
totally blown away by a boy, as the pizza was finished the boy came to the
table and asked "is there anything that I can get you" Todd responded
"Andy, yes you on a soft bed after a slow shower with me" if there is
silence to the point that you can hear a pin drop it happened there, the
boy blushed and said "if I thought you were serious that would be OK with
me" now was the time for Todd and I to blush, I said in a whisper "if you
are serious what time should we pick you up" now it was his turn to blush
he looked at me and said "I cant get out tonight but I don't work on
Wednesdays, I know that is 6 days away but if you do care pick me up about
a mile east on this road around 4:00 p.m. next Wednesday" he smiled as he
walked across the floor his little ass cheeks bouncing in cadence to the
music on the jukebox.

We sat open mouthed and stared at him and Mike said I think he is trouble,
we stood and walked outside and as we drove home the silence was like a
dark cloud in the truck. The mood was quiet and Todd walked to the porch
after he signaled me to follow as I reached the porch Todd was not in
sight, that is until my eye became accustom to the dark than I saw him
leaning against the tree as I walked to him I looked back to assure my self
that the boys were not following, when I reached the tree he looked at me
and said "I was way out of line when I said that to the boy but I agree
with Mike that he may be a problem" I considered the things that could go
wrong and said "lets get this party behind us and then I will decide what
to do about the kid next Wednesday" Todd smiled and put his arm around my
shoulder and said in a whisper "I love you, because you think first and
then act on your feeling" I gave him a gentle swat as we walked into the
house.
