Chapter 18

Building For the future
The Actual Construction.

	Two weeks to the day at 6:45 a.m. the shit hit the fan (my strange
way of saying the construction started) or at least the lumber yard made
its first delivery 2x4's 1x6's keg's of nails bundles of stakes, sheets of
plywood, pre framed doors, Solid Oak Flooring and of all things an 8 by 10
foot whirlpool hot tub, sinks, shower hardware and commodes some lighting
fixtures enough pipe and wiring to plumb and electrify everything, when you
add to that a new hot water heater and a solar pre heater for hot water the
deliveries lasted until early afternoon, by the time that I had signed for
the last delivery my hand was cramping up, at that time Todd and his boss
arrived with three bags of K. F. C. chicken and a few of Tom's boys that
were going to help, before we ate, the boys, and Jacob, Todd's boss and
Tom's boys were in the side yard with shovels hammers picks 2x6's stakes
and a transit to set up the footing for the extension an hour later they
came in to eat, as the host I had to do all of the setting up my basic rule
came into play "food was not to be wasted" so we all sat and ate, I must
admit at the beginning of the construction I was as helpful as a
left-handed monkey wrench, after an early dinner the sound from out side
was a cacophony of diesel truck engine gears grinding and a low rumble that
went through you nonstop, Jacob, Todd and all of the boys were up and
outside in a flash, at that moment I lost my boys and was left with the
leftovers and a sink full of dirty dishes, 20 minutes and a lot of effort
by me and the leftovers were in the frig and the area that the boys were
eating in was cleaned up, and the dishes were clean and put away now I
could go outside and check on the cement being poured for the footing. As I
joined the boys.

Andy wanted to stand in front of me so I would put my arms around him (I
was in fear that Andy was pushing him self in front of me and would make
the others a little upset) 25 minutes later the footing was poured and
level and special boards with lag bolts mounted through them were imbedded
into the fresh concrete these boards will be the baseboards for the walls
and had to be solidly mounted into the wet concrete, the ready mix truck
driver came to me for a signature and he was gone, within 20 minutes Tom's
boys came to me and shook my hand and were gone Jacob came to me and said
"not bad for the first day" shook my hand an left, and as the man said the
sun was setting and all was right with the world.

I took Andy, Adam and Mike inside showers and bed prep was next, as Mike
took the little ones in to shower Todd came in and had a sheepish look on
his face, I looked at him and said "OK out with it what is going on" he
looked like the cat that had swallowed the canary stole the cage and killed
the little old lady that had owned the canary (OK enough said he looked
guilty of something in the extreme) he started out stumbling a little bit
"I am sorry that I didn't talk to you before I purchased the things for the
new addition" I stood there and had I must admit with the stupidest look on
my face "say what" a favorite answer when I am blind sided by someone "Todd
what the hell are you talking about" at this moment I felt three pairs of
eyes making holes in my back, I spun quickly and ushered the remainder of
the four stooges into the kitchen clean showered and wrapped in towels
"everyone sit NOW" "you too Todd" they quickly sat and were at full
attention, (a small note I usually have an even temper, but when I am
rudely awaken at 6:45 am I am in an iffy and volatile mood until I make up
that sleep) I looked at Todd "can you please explain what you meant by what
you said before" again he looked a little sheepish and said "now that I am
working and Jacob has advanced me some money plus some of my savings I
payed for all of the construction material", "I know that you would not
take money from me for all the time I have lived here, this you can't take
back" I felt a chill run through me and I shuddered a little, felt a little
stupid and said "thank you for letting me in on the action considering I am
supposed to be in charge" I looked around and trying to soften my wraith
and defuse the anger in the air I asked "is anyone still hungry there is
some chicken in the frig" I was smiling as I said that and the boys knew I
was not mad at them. Even though I was not angry the remainder of the
evening went very quietly like walking on eggs, the boys and I watched TV
as Todd went over the drawings, the building inspector would be here in the
morning, so I asked the boys to stay in the house and out of the way, a
dual purpose in case that he might recognize Mike or Adam from a flyer that
I had seen in the municipal building as I was applying for my building
permit, no picture just description's, better safe than sorry. The morning
came bright and early I found my self in bed with Andy he needed a little
more hugs and reinforcement than the others did as he was new to the family
but of all the boys he was the one financially set for a long time, but as
I was soon to find out Todd was about to eclipse us all, his mental
conceptions of building trends were about to cause a few people to sit up
and take notice, all ready his boss was changing the company name to
Childer & Marquess Architectural Concepts Inc., something that sounded good
but I was not sure that Todd was ready for, thou I was all for, if they did
it carefully.

As I moved Andy moved into the fetal position in the middle of the bed,
even thou he was asleep his dream was not a nice one as I stood there I
could see tears running off of his face and his body was flinching
violently, I knelt on the edge of the bed and slowly picked him up, as I
did his eyes opened in almost panic I pulled him to my chest and he wrapped
his arms around my neck an was crying in a way that sounded almost painful,
as I held him and stroked his back he calmed down and said "I was dreaming
of when Tony beat me when I broke a dish in the kitchen at the hut" I
kissed him on the cheek pinched his butt and told him "if you don't get in
the kitchen your brothers will eat all of the breakfast food" he giggled
and ran to the kitchen screaming "watch out daddy is passing around butt
pinching" as I came into the kitchen the boys were sitting at the table
eating breakfast Adam was giggling so hard that he could not swallow Andy
looked at Mike and Todd for support, all Todd said he wants your butt and
that not our problem he looked like a cornered rat, at that moment we all
started to laugh, he stood in the middle of her kitchen and started to
scream "its not that funny" I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around
him as I did he calmed down, as I did I said "sometime your brothers are
not fair" we all laughed and as I held him he started to laugh as he
realized how funny it really was. We ate breakfast as it was Friday Todd
had to go to work after he dealt with the building inspector (note: Todd
had purchased a motorcycle something I didn't agree with but seeing that he
was eighteen there was nothing I could say) the boys were notably missing
as the inspector arrived, I stood back and Todd discussed the footings with
the inspector, as I listened, I could understand that Todd knew exactly
what he was talking about and the inspector signed off the building permit
and took the concrete samples with him to test for strength, to say the
least I was impressed, the way Todd handled the inspector, after the
inspector left he waved to me pulled on his helmet fired up his bike and
was gone to work. I figured that the early morning wiz bangs were over but
boy was in for a rude awaking, during the day Tom called and we set that
Sunday for the informal barbeque and he wanted to know what he could bring,
I wrote down his Fax number and went through my pantry with a note pad this
time I asked Andy to help as he was used to doing it at the Hut, due to the
emotional impact that Tony had on Andy I found that he acted and thought
the same as a boy much older than he was, "Andy how old are you" he looked
back at me and looked like he was in deep thought "thirteen in May, the 7th
I think" I stopped what I was doing and wrapped my arms around him, as I
did he looked at me and said, "now what was that for" I thought an my
answer was "I figured you needed a hug" He looked at me and said "dad
sometime your strange" at that we both laughed. Considering that this was
the middle of July I had a while to go till his birthday. I never make
decisions for the boys but I usually give them a multiple choice question,
with all of the answers with a small deviation are the same, I know that
sounds like I am telling them what to do but in giving them the choice, in
truth, in the end they are in charge of themselves.

Saturday morning 7:30 am, as I turnover in bed I find that the bed is empty
I sniff the air and don't smell coffee (now what) I slip on slippers and
lookout the window and to my surprise, Todd and all of his brothers are in
the middle of the foundation removing the forms and laying out the lumber
for various things, with Todd standing in the center as the crew chief as I
watch I realize that some of Tom's boy's including Oskar are helping, as I
watch I feel a presence behind me as I turn Tom starts to laugh he looks at
me and says "what's the matter old man cant wake up with the boys" as I
look him in the eye I said "I hope that you have coffee for me" so he hands
me a cup of Starbucks's coffee and says "here I knew that like me you don't
function without coffee" looked at him and mumbled thanks and went back
into the bedroom to get dressed, as I dressed I looked up and Tom was
standing in the doorway so I asked him "has anyone out there had breakfast"
he shook his head NO, with that I returned to the kitchen and started
enough food to feed Patsy's army (for those of you who think that remark
should read "Patton's army" and considering that I am "black Irish" and
born in Ireland I can tell you the meaning of the phrase, most good Irish
boys and girls are taught from birth to be prolific, SO Patsy's army meant
the brood of kids that most Irish households had) and considering that I
wanted something that was good and fast I baked 60 buttermilk biscuits and
made enough sausage based country (milk) gravy to feed an army, that and
orange juice, coffee and cold milk after it was set up I called the boys in
to eat, and considering the amount of food I made I was amazed to watch it
all vanish, I think I would rather cloth than feed this bunch. As they
started to go back to work, starting with Todd, every one that had eaten
came to me and thanked me and kissed me on the cheek, by the time they all
were gone I looked at Tom and said "now that is the only thing I want from
them, RESPECT, Tom looked at me and said "a few of them not only respect
you but they love you, and I am not talking about your four boys only" as
he said that he was smiling like the Cheshire cat of Luis Carroll's fame,
now I felt a little flushed (that's right I can blush too) that is if there
is a good reason, and one of the boys was Oskar. The construction went
forward at what I would classify at a speed that was totally unreal
considering that I had rented @ $75 per month a transport container 8x40'
to store the construction material including 36 bundles of 4 to 6 inch
thick fiberglass insulation, within two weeks the roof was complete and we
had not three extra rooms but four that is if you don't count the bathroom
between the new bedrooms the forth room housed the whirlpool hot tub and a
dry sauna something that Todd snuck in when I was not looking, on the roof
was a solar preheat panel and with the amount of sunlight the hot water
heater only operated at night or on a rainy day in the winter time, the
scratch stucco was on and the final coat would be put on tomorrow, in the
invisible budget was the total repainting of the house inside and out. The
boys new bedrooms were as sound proof as money and technology could produce
as an example (the following description is as good as it gets) the wall
studs were 2x4's set 12" apart and connected to a 2x6 floor and ceiling
plate flushing every other upright to one side and the other was offset to
the other edge of the 2x6 and fiberglass insulation was woven down the wall
horizontally with that and the bathroom between the bedrooms were as
isolated from each other as if they were in another world, all new
construction walls were built with this design. The room that housed the
whirlpool and the sauna with a pre wash shower for the Whirlpool and cool
down for the sauna and the boys bathroom and the sauna were walled in "blue
board" (water proof) with navajo white tile on the walls and ceiling and
miniature hexagonal slip proof white tile with a black border on the floor
there shower was something from star wars 6' square and had 4 shower heads
and a exhaust vent system that started and shut off automatically plus the
sight of 4 sexual active young boys in the shower at one time would cause
some people a heart attack, that and the door was a very thick transparent
Lexon and almost 4' wide and 6' tall. The lighting for the bathrooms
whirlpool and sauna area were of an absolute waterproof florescent design
plus the whirlpool had underwater lighting and the sauna had low voltage
lighting enough to move within the 6x8' room in safety. The room was setup
with the sauna on one end and the whirlpool on the other and the shower was
in the middle with fiberglass waterproof cabinets alongside of the shower
near the sauna for towels and other things that were used in the room, the
floor was a hexagonal slip proof mosaic with a central floor drain. Among
other things I purchased a water softener from Sears that would handle the
extreme usage by four active boys and as a bonus the whirlpool and the
sauna room cleanup was at a minimum as was the cleaning in the boys and my
shower and soap and lime crud on and in the sinks was totally
eliminated. At the end of three weeks the entire job was complete which
included cleaning up the entire exterior grounds around the house and
planting sturdy low maintenance plants around the exterior of the new
addition very quickly the house returned to normal (I know that many of my
faithful readers are now on the floor howling in pain) I know that there
are many different forms of normal. The boys and I went to Sears and with
almost a second mortgage. The boys bedrooms and the new utility/class room
(TV/S-VHS /satellite w/over 100 channels/120W per channel stereo room were
furnished plus due to the expanded family I purchased a new Maytag washer &
dryer in the brand-new Neptune design (Bendix tumbler with a twist), and
much to my shock the boys were truly conservative in there spending, and
neither me nor my bank account had a heart attack That night after supper
and a trip to the sauna and shower we retired to the whirlpool and I
realized that I would be sleeping alone for the first time in almost a year
wrapped my arm around Mike and as I did the others wanted to get closer, we
huddled together not knowing what brought the sudden affection on, and as
we became more aroused I wondered if I would feel a little lonely, with
four boys in the house NO WAY but I relaxed and I told the boys to shower
as it was bed time as I showered I felt Andy behind me and as I turned he
looked sad I helped him to shower (as he had been in the whirlpool and the
water contained high concentration of chlorine) off his body as I did I
noticed that he was finally gaining a little weight and his ribs were less
evident his back scars were almost gone, I stood him on one of the benches
and finished drying him, as I did he smiled and kissed me on the cheek so I
wrapped the towel around him and with a light swat told him to go to bed he
ran out giggling. I checked all of the doors and turned the lights off as I
walked down the hall towards my bedroom I checked on the boys and found
them in bed and fast on there way to sleep, I yawned and went to bed alone
my self. Of course in the morning the bed was half full Adam, Andy and I
were together in my bed as I woke with a piss woody I found Andy on my
right and Adam on my left as I moved as silently as I could they both
rolled toward the center and wrapped their arms around each other and there
was a sort of innocent peace in the way the slept, in the mean time I
almost ran to the bathroom and after the morning necessities I went to
start breakfast to find Todd dressed and the coffee was ready with a second
batch of biscuits in the oven "good morning dad" was the greeting I
received as I entered and pointed to the coffee and he poured me a cup, as
I sat he said "we have to bid on a new shopping center on the north side
area and Jacob and I have to talk before the meeting" as he said that I
realized that Todd was fast becoming a true business man and a big
influence on the area future, construction wise.
