Chapter 22

Todd decides to return to College

In the following weeks Todd along with working with the boys education and
still working with Jacob and adding the up-scale bunk bed design that was
selling on the west coast and keeping 24 young men very busy cranking out
the frames plus the factory salesman has made contact with Sears and they
are shocked that we don't bargain and we set a price and the frames are at
one price for the tubular and an other price for the wood Oak or Maple but
we didn't have the manufacturing capacity and we were only making the ends
and safety side rails the mattress and mattress support were off the shelf
items and were in easy supply so I suggested to Todd that he give the plant
to the employees and that he would receive $5.00 for each frame sold, so he
could free up time for his need for continued education, at first he balked
but as the employees worked it out they were all for it and Todd could
still be the company President and his salary was enough to make his life
comfortable.

I continued to work with Tom and the local Gay council and my life was
settling down, and when things got comfortable all hell broke loose when
Todd announced that he had applied at the Albuquerque Teachers College but
I had made a promise to my self that he was an adult and I would give him
room to expand his life in what ever direction that he wanted so to that
end I approved with what ever he wanted and as luck would have it his
professor named Willams was gay and was the Dean of men at the college so
he asked Todd to take and entrance exam even though Todd's highschool
grades were excellent and much to both of there shock Todd did much better
than just pass his entrance exam he qualified for a scholarship that meant
that his schooling would be cost free thru his degree, when he told me
about it he was amazed and my only comment was "I knew you were smart and
this proves it" at that he stuck his tongue out at me and said "but you are
my Dad and how smart I am goes with out saying for you" I looked at him and
said "but you are that smart and I have always known it" he thru his hands
in the air and stormed out of the room, with my laughter ringing in his
ears.

As the poet says time heals all wounds and within a month Todd came to me
and said "Dad now I know what you meant about my abilities, I truly am
smart but as you said with out the degree I cant be a real teacher, and
teach in a formal school" my response was not what he expected "plus being
a teacher in a formal school, is not all that it is cracked up to be" we
both laughed.

Than he dropped the bomb and said "Dad Thanksgiving is coming up and
Professor Williams wants to go to his parents home for Thanksgiving and the
only problem is that his parents don't know he is gay and that he is the
guardians of two middle school gay boys, and he has asked me to ask you if
they could stay here over Thanksgiving" at that moment I was in shock and I
said "have you given him an answer" now he was looking at the floor and he
said "no sir, I said it was up to you, and nothing more" I looked at him
and said "call him and tell him that I need to see him and the boys in
person and that he needs to bring the paperwork that allows him to raise
the boys and that I have most of the afternoon today open that is after
1:00 pm today, after you call please tell your brothers that they are to
clean their bedrooms and shower and dress in warm and comfortable clothing
and that we will be having guests today and their best behavior is a
minimum requirement or else" with that Todd ran out and started the ball
rolling and before the shower started I was in and out and was dressed in
long sweat pants and a short sleeved sweat shirt with the U. of N.M. logo
and white tennies and white sox.

When I was finished getting dressed Todd came in and said "the Prof. Asked
if he could bring a few Pizza's and that could be used as an ice breaker" I
smiled and said "call him back and tell him 2 loaves of fresh french bread
would be better, and I would cook" the rest of my MOB heard that I was
going to cook for a crowd and seeing that I had purchased 3# of dark meat
chicken sans bones and skin the boys knew what was coming Oskar said "we
eat good tonight" I yelled "take a shower all of you and I will need your
help in the kitchen" as I said that they started to push and shove to get
naked and into the shower plus I grabbed Todd and said in a whisper "you
use my shower and clean Oskar up too" I knew that he loved Oskar as much as
I did and Oskar loved him too.

The after noon went by with a flash and around 3:45 pm prof Williams and
the cutest two boys that were the spitting image of him and so clean that
they shined arrived and Todd took the boys in hand and they and the rest of
my clan went to the front yard and before the clocked ticked off 5 minutes
were in a 3 on 4 basket ball game and Oskar is a tough competitor and truly
fearless Dan (Mr Williams first name) sat on the porch and watched after 10
minutes we went in and as we sat at the kitchen table I explained what I
would need if I was to take care of his boys, and as in the past he was
shocked at my request but as I explained boys will be boys and if they were
hurt I could not take them to the hospital with out a document that put me
in absolute authority plus if he God forbid killed over the long holiday
they would become wards of the state plus by making them his soul heir his
estate could be in probate for years then the state would get most of it
for there care and upbringing and they would be cheated out of their
inheritance, my final remark is what shocked him "I have known 6 boys that
were raised by the state and there stories would make your hair turn grey
very fast" at that he acquiesced and said "I will get and fill out the
forms and get them back to you if you agree to caring for them while I am
at my parents place for Thanksgiving" I smiled and said "come to my office
and we can get the paperwork finished today, then all you need to do is
have your signature notarized and get it back to me a week before you
leave" in less that 20 minutes all of the paperwork was properly filled out
on my computer and we returned to watching the boys enjoy their game.

As we sat for dinner I put an antipasto on the table that among other
things had 2 head of bib lettuce ½# each of prevalone cheese, hard salami,
a can of pitted black olives and a pint of Italian Homemade dressing
(Seasoned balsamic vinegar, blended with extra virgin olive oil and
parmesan cheese) when that was gone the signature dish that I love was next
and I must say all of the boys were happy and Dan was shocked that I could
cook, the french bread was great with garlic butter and parmesan cheese and
toasted under the broiler when we were finished Todd softly kissed my cheek
and said "fantastic as usual, now the boys and I will clean up and you and
Professor Williams go sit on the porch" we followed orders and as we were
sitting Dan said "they do adore you and you would do any thing for them" I
smiled and said "they know that I will accept nothing less and I will give
nothing less" he smiled and said "the boys are a product of a one night
stand with a female Professor and I during the `I am not gay period' of my
life before I came here and as far as they know their mother is dead, I
know that I will have to tell them the truth after they turn 18, and let
them make up there own mind and I hope that they forgive me for me not
telling them earlier".

All of the boys came out as the sun was setting and they sat arm in arm
with my boys and you could see that a new alliance was slowly forming and
both Mike and Adam were happy to be in the new boys arms and Oskar and Andy
came to me and they were happy in my arms Todd stood at the end of the
porch beside Dan it was a good day and I was tired.
