David

It was as if for a minute, time had slowed down. I heard the lock click,
the door swing open and Tim step in. And the minute his eyes adjusted to
the scene before him, the color rose in his cheeks. The door stood ajar,
forgotten for the moment as James looked at Tim, an indescribably look
etched unto his face, my dad looked down at the floor and I...well I just
stood there taking in the whole scene thinking Ôwhat the fuck!?!' None of
us made an effort to move and before long, the silence in the room had
become deafening. Finally, James spoke up,

"Hi, I'm James...nice digs you got here." His words were neither overly
friendly nor malicious but there was no mistaking the humorless tone in his
words. He didn't even make a move to walk over to Tim and shake his hand.

Tim cleared his throat and ran a visibly shaken hand through his hair,
darting furtive looks between my dad and James.

"Hi...I'm Tim...Neil's uh....friend. Thanks." And for a minute I thought that
Tim would pass out, his face becoming more flushed if that was even
possible. Finally, he turned to close the door and stepped forward,
stopping in front of James, before extending his hand.

"It's uh...nice to finally meet you. Neil has mentioned you."

James took Tims' hand and shook it before casting a quick glance towards my
dad.

"Well I can't say I've heard much about you Tim. How do you guys know each
other?"

And I could tell from the gleam in James' eye that he was not letting this
go. Call it the attack of the green-eyed monster or whatever else you
like, but the gloves had come off.

Tim cleared his throat before speaking again, "Matt and I know each other
from the hospital. I met Neil through Matt." And as if an after thought
and an intentional jab, he added, "we're really good friends."

And looking at James' face, it looked as if he wanted to hit something,
namely Tim. I didn't want things to escalate and apparently, neither did
my dad, as he finally decided to speak up, walking in between Tim and James
and putting the palm of his hand against Tims' chest.

"Tim, we're almost done in here, give us a few minutes."

"Neil..." Tim started and stopped as my dad cut into his words.

"Please, 5 minutes."

And it seemed that was all the convincing he needed. He walked past us and
into a back room, slamming the door behind him. And if either of us had
thoughts that having Tim out of the picture would release the strain, those
ideas quickly disappeared as James starting to speak, not bothering to
censor his words.

"So, that's him."

My dad looked at him and shook his head, as if trying to clear his
thoughts.

"What?...James, I'm not gonna get into this with you, especially not in front
of David. Tim is my friend."

And it was as if that simple declaration had James coming apart at the
seams. I had never seen him so unnerved before.

"Your friend huh.....He must be a damn good friend if you're letting him
tongue you down like that."

I didn't expect to hear that and apparently, neither did my dad, judging by
his reaction. He stood tall in front of James and jabbed his finger into
James' chest, hard,

"You're a son of a bitch, you know that! You have some fucking nerve!
First you dump me, move out, break up our family and now...now you expect me
to be stagnant, to not move on. You're such an asshole James...you always
were!."

I stood back, taking in the scene before me, not knowing what to say. And
it was as if the past 12 hours hadn't happened. For all the happiness that
I had experienced that day, seemed to just evaporate into thin air. And I
found myself just reaching a breaking point. I had had it.

"Listen to the both of you! Just fucking stop it! It's supposed to be my
fucking day and you're both ruining it with your bullshit!"

And it was obvious by their facial expressions that my words were hitting
home. My dad tried to speak but I cut him off,

"You both need to get your shit together, you really do. In a years time
I'm gonna be going away to college and I don't know what you're gonna do
without me here to keep y'all civil. Can't you both just start acting like
fucking adults for a change!"

And with that, I pushed past both of them, opened the door and ran out. I
heard my dad call out behind me and James mumble something inaudible, but I
didn't stop, I couldn't stop. I needed to get as far as away from them and
this situation as I could.

Neil

At that moment, I fucking hated him. Watching my sons' happiness vanish
from his face made the anger build up in me to a feverish pitch. And right
at that moment, I wanted to take it out on him, and I did. It was as if I
had closed off all rational thought and was watching my actions from the
outside. I saw my hand extend back and swing around, connecting with his
jaw, essentially bringing him to the ground. Blood started flowing
steadily from his mouth and he made no attempt to get up.

"I fucking hate you! I fucking hate you, you son of a bitch! You ruined
our lives and for what? I fucking wish I never met you!" And it was as if
all the anger and the rage that had been building up had finally come
pouring out. I must have called him every dirty name in the book and then
some.

The funny thing was though, that despite all that I was saying, he never
made an attempt to respond, nor did he try to get up....and that pissed me
off even more.

"What, you have nothing to say? You fucking ruin David's birthday and you
have the nerve to just sit there and..."

"Fuck you Neil!" His voice was abrupt, essentially cutting off my words.
He wiped his mouth on the sleeve of his shirt and stood up, his eyes never
leaving mine.

"You want me to stay away from you, you got it! Fuck this shit about
trying to be civil. As far as I'm concerned, you're fucking dead to me!
So now you and your fucking man can have your happiness, without me in the
way to fuck it up!"

His chest was heaving as he spoke and I had to admit to myself that for a
moment, I was scared. Scared that he would either grab or hit me. But he
did neither, and in that moment, I realized that he didn't need to. His
words had done far worst damage. And they made me feel like shit. But
there was no way in hell I was gonna share that with him. In a way, James
was giving me an easy way out, a way to finally cut the strings of our
relationship. And with David leaving for college in a year, there would be
no reason for us to be in each others lives. And even though the thought
of never seeing him again made me sad, I knew it was for the best.

"I'm outta here!" And with that, he walked out the door, slamming it behind
him. His words were cold and left me feeling strangely empty inside. But
I wouldn't allow him the satisfaction of taking up space in my mind.

Hearing footsteps, I turned away from the door and looked into the face of
the man who had become my reprieve from this fucked up situation. He
walked up to me, holding out his hands to grasp my own before pulling me
into his chest.

"So that's the infamous ex, huh." He stated matter of factly.

"Yeah, that's him...what an asshole."

Tim chuckled and gripped me tighter. "I can make you forget, you know"

And I could feel his hands work their way down unto my ass before gripping
both cheeks and squeezing them tightly.

"Yeah, well make me forget." And that was all the encouragement he needed.

Before long, we were fucking like animals against his kitchen island, all
memories of James and our argument lay forgotten, for the moment.

James

When I left, I just found myself walking around, going no where in
particular. I had tried to phone David but in all his stubbornness, he
refused to answer his phone, and by my tenth attempt, it was apparent that
he had shut the phone off altogether. And with him not there to serve as
my distraction, my mind begun to recall the altercation with Neil. I never
planned to come out of my face like that but it was as if I couldn't help
it. Just seeing his... Ôfriend' there was enough to get my fucking blood
boiling. I mean it was one thing to imagine him being with someone else
but to actually see him and another man, embraced, hugged up, doing shit
that we used to do, well it was just too fucking much for me to deal with.
And for him to actually have David's party in this guys' house, shit...he had
balls! And I would be lying if I said that I didn't wanted to fucking
cream his Ôfriend' the minute he stepped through the door. Good for him
then that David was standing there because if not, shit would have no doubt
hit the fan and one of us would have been leaving there on a stretcher.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not usually a violent person. You don't work
with kids for as long as I have without learning to keep your personal
disdain for certain situations in check. No, I wasn't a violent person but
jealousy, my jealousy was not something that I had yet mastered. And as I
said, it was one thing to imagine something but a totally different thing
to see things for yourself. But you know what, all that shit was over. I
had cut Neil off and put that last nail in our relationship and I wasn't
one to back down from my own words.

The ringing of my cell phone brought me out of my train of thought, halting
all thoughts of the nights' events.

"Hello"

The voice on the other end was not familiar to me,

"Hello, is this Mr James Wilson?"

"Yeah, who is this?"

There was a brief pause before the speaker identified himself, "This is
Seargent McDowell calling from the 39th precinct. Do you know a David
Stewart?"

My heart raced and it was as if the pounding sound it made would rupture my
eardrums at any minute.

"Yes, he's my son, is he ok?"

Again, there was that pause, leaving me to conjure up all sort of scenarios
about David in my head.

"I'm not sure ok would be the right word Mr Wilson. I'm sorry to have to
inform you that your son has been involved in an incident."

Don't you just love cliffhangers folks! I will be on vacation for a week
and a half so hopefully I'll have the next chapter posted sometime in May
or if I'm adventurous, maybe by the end of April! Comments for this and
other stories are encouraged and appreciated and I do reply to all emails.
