               Angel in Black, Chapter 1

                  Demons and Angels

Alex Davies was a good happy little boy, lovely parents who loved him,
had a great start in life, until a night out changed him and his family
forever.

He was with his family out in one of the big shopping centres. Alex's
parents had decided to take him to see some new children's film, and it was
packed. There were even people in the isles because there weren't enough
seats for everyone.

The movie was good the three of them laughed and had a great time. Upon
leaving though they were separated. Alex was scared, crying and thinking
'Where's mummy and daddy?'

Mr and Mrs Davies were frantic! Their boy was gone; he was nowhere to be
found. They looked all over, and even had other parents helping them. Mrs
Davies was a vision of worry and panic; all she could think was her sweet
boy is gone. Mr Davies, meanwhile, was demanding that everyone there help
look, and that was a lot of people.

"His name is Alex, he's about this tall", he showed them with his hand,
"brown hair, green eyes, he's got a red shirt and grey jeans with little
white sneakers!" Bill tried to get out, worry in his voice, to anyone that
passed him by. "If you find him can you please find me or my wife?" he
asked, pointing to the grief stricken woman being comforted by a couple
other young mothers.

***

"Alex!" Someone called, 'Daddy?' Alex thought while sobbing into the
small backpack he was holding on to. Again he heard "Alex!" but he heard
better this time. 'Not daddy,' he thought, so he stayed quiet.

Then another man found him. "Alex?" he said softly. Alex looked at the
man; he wasn't old like daddy and seemed friendly. "Mmm hmm," Alex hummed.
The man said, "Come with me. I know where your parents are!" Alex went, all
the trust his six years could give, but the man didn't take him to his
parents. But the man didn't take him somewhere safe...

The place was dark and cold and smelled funny. Alex kept asking the man,
"Where's my mummy? Where's daddy?" The man told him he would see them
soon, but he was lying to Alex. He wouldn't see his parents anytime
soon...

***

"WHERE'S MY SON!!" Mr Davies screamed to everyone and no one. Everyone
stopped and looked at the man in his thirties, crying, pain in his eyes,
his heart screaming. His wife wasn't doing as well; all she could do was
repeat, over and over, "Alex, my baby, where are you?"

***

  He saw everything but he wasn't there to act. He saw what this man;
Jordan had done to a scared, innocent little boy. The terror the boy was
feeling he felt too; the malice the man was feeling, the lack of care in
what he was doing, he felt it all. He was too late to do more. He thought
of skinning the man, or doing to him what he had just done to the boy, but
Jordan might enjoy that too much. The boy needed to be able to know who
this man was and what he had done, but later when he could understand.

He walked silently up behind this Jordan, who was just looking through
the kid's backpack, and touched the back of his head and the man stopped.

***

Jordan dropped the backpack and just stood there blank face like he was
frozen, but he could see and hear...

He saw a man dressed in all black, from his hat to older style boots and
full length black leather coat, even raven black hair. But the eyes...they
seemed to glow in the darkness, gold on green they watched, no peered into
him, his thoughts. He could feel it, he was being read, and he could do
nothing to stop it.

***

Mr. Davies was losing his mind. Where was his only son? Why couldn't
they find him? Where was he? It was then he saw the man holding his boy,
Alex was asleep, and he had been crying. This tall young man was cradling
him in his arms, and he came straight to Bill and his distraught wife and
handed the man his son. He said, "I must tell you Mr Davies, your son has
had something terrible happen to him and the man that did it is outside in
the custody of the police. I called them and told them what I saw, and
that he needed to confess." Bill looked at this man, thoughts racing
through his head. What happened? How did you? What did you do to my son?
But all that came out was "What...?"

"Ask the officers out side; they have my statement. Just tell them
Marcos told you to ask, and they will tell you everything," he explained,
and then he left.

***

Marcos had told the police what happened. From the boy's memory, he knew
that Alex Davies wouldn't be the same happy little boy after all of it, and
he felt he had to do something. After all these years, he needed to do
something... He had told the police that he would go and take the sleeping
Alex to his parents and tell them to come talk to them. Marcos then looked
at the senior officer and told him to tell Bill and Marie everything,
before giving a contact number and going to find Bill.

***

Bill had his son back, and he and his wife knew what had happened. The
officer told them everything that that man Marcos had told them. They were
so scared for their son, what he would remember, if he would remember any
of it, but they both agreed that no matter what they would be there to
support their son and help him through this. They loved their son; he was
their world.

***

Marcos left the mall, knowing that after all he had done to try to help
Alex and his parents, Jordan would go to prison. He'd made sure that would
happen, and Marcos knew that once he was there he would feel all the pain
he made Alex and all the other boys go through. He was going to suffer. Oh
Jordan wouldn't die, not for a long time, but he would suffer.

Marcos went looking, searching again for what had drawn him to that
scene. He'd been looking for something else when he found the boy, but a
moment too late, always too late...

He was hungry. That's what had drawn him to that man in the first place,
the anger, the hate, the malice in him.  That man didn't care about anyone;
he had no love at all. Marcos saw it all in his eyes, all he had done
... his little brother David.... The man raped his own brother! He didn't
deserve to live, but for Alex's sake he would. Alex would need to know why
this man had done it - that he was a sick and twisted man; Alex needed to
know it wasn't him, he didn't ask for it. So he would live; Jordan Wright
would live.

And Marcos promised himself that he would never let anything bad happen
to Alex Davies ever again. He swore that he would protect him and watch
over him at all times, for as long as he was able.

***

The house woke with a start, a small voice screaming,
"DAADDDDDDYYYYYY!!!!"

Bill ran to his son's room and got in there to find Alex sitting up in
his bed holding his knees, tears streaming down his face. "I'm here son,
I'm here," Bill said, sitting on the bed.

Alex crawled into his dads arms and said, "Daddy, I had a dream, the bad
man hurt me, but the nice man in black came and taked me away and bringed
me back to you and mummy...."

"Its ok Alex no one will ever hurt you again.... Now you go back to
sleep and dream of your favourite Turtle! Which one was he?"

"Silly daddy, you know Mikey is my favourite! Cowabunga, surfs up!"

"That's right, little man! Now go back to sleep ok?"

"K daddy!" Then Bill lay his son back down and got up to leave the room,
turning on a small lamp on the table beside the bed. "Daddy, the bad man
won't come back, will he?"

  "No Alex, he won't, ever!"

  "K daddy, luv you!"

  "Love you too, Alex."

Just out side the house, watching from the shadows, Marcos sensed it all,
the scream, the conversation, the concern from Bill for his son, and the
love in the reassurance that he would be okay. Marcos knew he would keep
his promise as he had the last two weeks, watching Alex wake up every night
screaming or crying from his nightmare, and always telling his mum and dad
that the nice man in black brought him back.

***

The weeks went by, turning to months. Alex had gone back to school a week
after it had happened, but he wasn't the same. His teachers noticed; his
friends noticed. They could all see he wasn't that happy laughing bouncy
boy anymore. He was sad; he was shy; he kept to him self. But there
wasn't anything they could do. He had to let them help but he didn't know
how; he couldn't talk about it, he didn't understand what happened. But
how could he? He was too young...

His nightmares lessened over the months, and eventually he couldn't
remember what happened. He did remember the man in black. He could never
get the image of him to leave his mind, how the man's green eyes seemed to
glow gold, how he had looked down at him and told him he would be okay.

Slowly life went back to normal for the Davies family, or at least as
normal as it could get after all that happened. Alex saw doctors and
specialists, and they all told him it wasn't his fault, that he did nothing
wrong, that it was just a bad man that did a bad thing. He accepted that,
but he never really believed it, so he hid how he felt from everyone. His
parents could sense he was holding something in but didn't say anything.
They just wanted to see him happy, and he was unless he was alone, but he
would deal with that.

***

Time started to go by pretty quickly, for both the Davies family and for
Marcos. He would look out for Alex 24 hours a day, unless he was hungry,
even then he had to know Alex was home safe with his parents. He had
learned so much about him. Marcos knew Alex better than anyone did, even
Alex himself, but they shouldn't meet. He knew it wasn't time yet.

***

Alex had just turned 10; it had now been 4 years since it had happened.
He seemed to be coping well, though he was starting to feel like someone
was watching him. He brushed off the feeling, thinking he was just being
paranoid.

He was always frustrated in school, not that he didn't like it, he just
felt he was different from all his friends and he wasn't sure why. He had
asked his daddy, and Bill told him that he was just special, that everyone
was different and that it was good to be different. But Alex knew it
wasn't that and kept to himself, didn't really talk to many people beside
his friends, and even then not often. That was most likely the reason the
school bullies decided that night Alex Davies was their target...

They waited. Alex was at school late that night, because he had been
asked by his teacher to stay so she could explain something from class to
him that he was having trouble with. It was just math, and he hated math,
but he needed the help.

After the extra math class with his teacher, Alex was free. The days
were short so it was starting to get dark already, and it was a nice warm
night. Since Alex didn't live far from his school he walked home like
always. But he wasn't going to get too far. Almost as soon as he left the
school grounds, he was jumped by his school's three man bully squad. The
three boys were a year up from him, all a bit bigger and stronger than
him. Alex wasn't a big athlete; not that he was in bad shape, he just
didn't really like sports at all. He loved music, getting lost in the
sounds he heard, so he would never be able to defend himself long against
the goon squad.

"Hey fag!" the leader, Tommy Jacobs yelled at Alex.

"What, I'm not a...a fag?" Alex had no idea what that word meant. He
was ten! What does fag mean to a ten year old?

"We are going to get you fag!" said Billy Lawson the first tag along.

"What did I do to you?" asked Alex.

"Oh na'fin, we just gonna get you coz we can," came the answer from the
second tag along, Jeff Parker. He was a little behind the other two in
class.

"Why?" Alex said again starting to cry, "I didn't do anything to you!"

"Oh look the fag is crying like a baby," said Tommy, while the other two
chanted, "Baby, baby!" at which Alex only cried more. Then Tommy added,
"Oh yeah you did, you looked at us in class! We don't like you looking at
us!"

"But that's stupid," Alex said starting to feel scared that he was not
going to get away from them.

"Guys hold him, I'll start!" Tommy said.

  "K Tommy...."

***

Marcos had been watching Alex long enough now to know how he was feeling
with out even looking into him. He didn't even have to see him anymore to
know. Marcos was close by in the house he had rented, and he felt Alex
calling out for help, terrified. Marcos ran so fast everything seemed to
blur. He stopped back from the group for a second and saw Alex, crying,
three older boys closing in on him. Marcos read them and knew that two of
them were just following. The leader, Tommy was the biggest of the three
bullies; Marcos could see that he was going to hurt Alex but he couldn't
understand why. Then he saw the reason, and why he wouldn't stop if started
to hit Alex even when the other two boys ran, Tommy could kill Alex. Marcos
leapt forward then stopped his back to Alex, as usual dressed in black....

***

Alex saw a blur, and then there he was, just as in Alex's dream - his
hero in black. Then Alex heard a calm voice that he remembered, 'You're
ok, Alex! I'll keep you safe.' Then he saw the three bullies in front of
him; they were terrified, not just scared but white, like they might just
fall over dead at any second. Then they turned and ran, didn't stop,
didn't look back, just ran. He was safe; the man in black had saved him.

  "Thank you, mista," Alex said.

"Go home, Alex, be safe! Tell your dad Marcos says hello," he said, and
then he was gone again. Alex didn't try to stop him; he just knew that he
would see this man, Marcos, again.

***

Marcos came to a dead stop between these boys and his charge, and he told
Alex that he would be safe, so that only he could hear. Then his face
transformed, his green eyes went black with a gold glow in the dusk light;
his face seemed to sharpen, all emotion drained from it, all but sheer
rage. He opened his mouth and showed his teeth to the three in front of
him, and they went white, their eyes wide. They were scared; they saw the
thing their nightmares were made of standing right in front of them, but
Marcos wasn't done. He wanted to make sure that they wouldn't try this on
anyone else, and he told them, and only them since he didn't want Alex to
hear, 'You EVER try this on anyone again and I WILL be back, and I won't be
nice!' The three of them just stood there terrified, thinking they were
going to die, Jeff even pee'd himself, but Marcos couldn't do that. They
were kids; if they were helped then they could still change. Seeing they
were about to run, he commanded, 'WAIT! Don't end up like your parents,
make friends, help people!' which was directed solely at Tommy. Tommy
looked straight into Marcos' eyes and Marcos winked at him. Then they
ran...

Marcos knew that the time was coming when he would be in Alex's life, but
not yet. Alex wasn't ready. He didn't look back as he walked home, but he
knew where Alex was and that he wasn't feeling scared anymore, and that's
all he needed.

***

Alex walked home feeling safe knowing his guardian angel in black was
watching over him somewhere. He got to the house and found dinner on the
table waiting for him. His mum looked over at her son, saw the red eyes,
and immediately stopped what she was doing and grabbed him up in a big hug.
"What's wrong baby? You've been crying!"

"Nothing mummy. Three bullies tried to beat me up after I left math with
the teacher," he replied.

She looked at him, the way he said it like it was nothing, "Oh sweetie,
it's ok to be scared! They wanted to hurt you, you should have been
terrified!"

"I was scared. I thought I wasn't going to see you and daddy again," he
said, starting to cry.

  "Oh baby, it's ok...."

Alex cut her off, "But then my angel came and saved me!" his eyes
sparkling as she hadn't see them do in years.

"Angel, what angel?" she asked, worried.

"My angel in black! He was cool; he just looked at them and they ran
away! Mummy it was so cool!" she looked at him like he had gone crazy,
"Then he told me to 'go home, be safe and to say to daddy that Marcos said
hello."

"Who said hello?" Bill asked walking in the room.

"My angel, daddy ... Marcos he ... said ... to say hello ... to you,"
Alex said squirming from Marie to get to his dad.

Bill hugged Alex as he jumped at him, "Who?"

"Daddy! My angel, he saved me from the bad boys at school that wanted to
hurt me! He just looked at them and they ran away!"

Bill looked at his wife, confused and worried, then at the sparkle in his
boys' eye. The last time he saw that was after Alex had a nightmare. "And
this angels name was Marcos?"

"Yes! Daddy, you believe me don't you?"

"Yes, of course we do Alex, we are just glad you're ok! Now what do you
want for dessert?"

***

That night, "Marie, you don't suppose this 'angel' Marcos is the man from
all those years ago?"

"I don't know dear, but if he is I want to thank him. He saved our son
again; I don't know what I would do if we lost him Will...."

"Me either, dear. I wonder if we will ever see him again?"

Just then, Alex quietly opened their door, stuck his head in and asked,
"Dad, what does fag mean?"

Bill's eyes widened, "That's a bad word Alex, who told you that?" He said
a little too loudly.

Alex was a little scared; he saw his daddy getting angry and got quiet
and looked away. Bill saw what he had done, walked over and hugged his
son. Then he sat down and patted the bed, motioning for the boy to sit
down between Marie and himself, and tried to explain, "Alex, its ok! I'm
not angry with you, but that word is a very bad word. It's a bad name to
call a boy who likes a boy, the proper thing to say is gay, but never fag!
Only mean people say that, and you are not mean."

"No, daddy, I'm not!" Alex said through a quiet sob.

"Now, you wanna tell me who said that?"

"It was Tommy Jacobs! He said I was a fag, then the other boys Billy and
Jeff started too; they called me a baby coz I was crying. I'm not a baby,
am I, daddy? Oh then my angel came and saved me!" he said the last with
such enthusiasm that he jumped up almost hitting his head on the head board
of the bed.

"No, sweet boy, you're not a baby, and I think we are going to have to
have a talk with Tommy's parents about this, and your not a fag either,
remember that's a very bad thing to call someone, now anything else? Or is
my brave little man ready for bed?"

"No, that's all daddy, I go to bed now. Night mummy, night daddy, love
you both!" They hugged then he went to bed.

  "William?"

'Oh no,' he thought, 'she only calls me that when she's worried!'

  "Yes, dear?"

"If Alex was, you would be okay, right?"

"If he was what?" the man asked his wife.

  "Gay..."

Bill took his wife's chin in his hand, looked in her light brown eyes,
and said "I would. He is my son...our son, no matter who he is or who he
loves that won't change. I'll love him just the same!" He gave her a quick
kiss and laid back down to sleep.

"Good," she said hesitantly, "I have a feeling he might just be..."

"Well, when he feels he can tell us he will, now don't worry. It seems
he has an angel watching over him."

  "Night, my love," she said.

"Night love," he answered, and all was quiet again with a feeling of love
in their home.

***

Marcos had felt the conversation between them. He didn't need to hear the
words; he knew they knew he was there guarding their boy and sighed,
relieved that they knew. He also felt the love coming from that small
home, a small amount of it directed towards him, again he sighed. It had
been a long time since he felt that. He missed it, but it still wasn't
time for them to know. He would wait until the right time to reveal
himself; besides if the council knew where he was and what he was doing
they would all be in danger. That he wouldn't have...
