Chapter 1

The brightly illuminated login screen appeared before his eyes
as he looked on and entered his login and password.

<Pre-caching world...done>
<Welcome to The World>

He smiled. This was one place he was always welcome. He gingerly
picked up the visor and put it on. His bedroom disappeared as he
turned on the visor and materialized into The World.

His character, a beautiful black furred Neko and recently released
administrator character design, appeared in front of the ominous
trademark clock tower.

His individual user stats were displayed on the tower along with
the world's and his real-life time.

He padded along the smooth marble path, ignoring the stares of
other users who envied and feared the administrators of the game.
He caught sight of two others engaging in a brawl near the local
pub. Walking casually up to them he cleared his throat saying,
"is there a problem, gentlemen?"

"What the fuck does it look like," one of them said, not turning,
"This faggot is the fucking problem."

The other one turned and looked at the questioning voice, and ran
as soon as he recognised his face.

"You are in violation of the rules of this world. Think before you
say things in the presence of an administrator. I trust we won't
have these sort of fights occurring in town anymore. If you have a
problem take it to mail or outside my watch."

As the figure timidly craned his head to see who he just yelled at,
fear emerged on his face.

"I didn't mean it, sir. I swear--"

"Your kind is worthless to me, understand? Ban user duration one
day"

The man looked shocked and angry as his image quickly faded in
a flurry of static. A message appeared in his place, reading,
"User banned by Nikedemus"

Nikedemus smiled to himself, thinking, "not even one minute ingame
and I'm already making The World a better place. My query certainly
will be met today."

He continued down the path and noticed something strange when he
switched to the code layout of this area for an inspection.
Someone, and not an administrator, had edited an area nearby. He
noticed a dark alley that hadn't been there last login. He hung
a right into it and, reaching the end, switched back to the code
layout to acquire the phrase needed to access the object the hackers
had so insecurely added.

"Down with the CC," he stated quizzically.

The alley slowly opened into a door to another area. He sighed
audibly. Just another unauthorized gate. He notified the moderator
of the area for repair, closed the gate and walked away, as silently
as he came.

Just as he left the alley it closed up behind him. Brick
materialized and slotted into place, blocking access to the alley
while repairs occurred.

Then he remembered what he'd came online for: the weekly confidential
meeting. Nikedemus signed again. He hated formal gatherings. Closing
his eyes, the his fur flashed white. Grid-like lines appeared all
around his body as a black suit with a standard CC Corporation tie
flashed into place. As the last bit of clothing fitted into place
a message appeared in front of him: "Suit Equipped"

"Warp zero-zero-two," (3) he 3. warping [worping]

in a well lit room with a table
in front of him. The other administrators were already seated and
looking more bored than usual.

"Nikedemus," said the head of the table, "we've been waiting for you!"

"Yes, I'm sorry for keeping everyone waiting. I had to deal with an
unauthorized gate that sprouted up in town."

"You should have mailed us."

"I wasn't expecting it to take very long," he lied. The truth was that
he really logged in 10 minutes after the meeting had started; so he
had been late to begin with.

"In any event, your here now, so please take a seat. We have many things
to discuss."

Nikedemus sat near the end of the table and stared at the CC logo in
the center. He hated these damn meetings. 'We need to fix this and you
need to do that,' was all this consisted of.

Thirty minutes of boring discussion went by when finally the meeting
adjourned. Nikedemus was about to warp out when the chancellor addressed
him.

"Please try and come a bit earlier next time."

Gritting his teeth, he responded, "I'll try and keep that in mind.
Warp one-zero-one"

Again, the warmth surrounded him. He relished the moment. It started
from his toes or paws rather, moving rapidly up to his head. It grew
to a comfortable, tingling temperature, and gently made his veins
pulse. The next thing he knew, he was safely in town.

He sighed. He'd been doing that a lot lately. The game just wasn't the
same as it was when he first took the job of administrator. He used
to be happy to help the CC Corporation think of new areas, plan new
events and manage the fan-base. Now it was just a routine. Wake up,
log on for an hour or two before school, ban some users, then log
off. It was the same every day and even worse after school. Everyone
seemed to rebel against him, citing some rule that he was breaking.
Didn't they get it by now. He was an administrator. The rules were
for the users. The administrators regulated the users. If they saw it
fit to ban someone, it happened.

Today was no exception.

"Hey, Mr. High and Mighty."

"Now is not the time, newbie."(4) 4. newbie [newbee]

"Oh yeah? Whatcha gonna do? Ban Used mainly in a game but can

"How about this. Ban user duration one hour reason aggravating an
administrator."

Again, the character faded from view with the normal "User banned by
Nikedemus" message being displayed.

The mail icon flashed above his head. He signed again.

"This better not be a complaint. Read mail."

A message appeared in front of him. It read:
"Well now, aren't we cranking in the bans. Let me do you a liberty
and warn the rest of the newbs before you end up doing a domain
wide one on some poor unsuspecting eleven year old. -Celest"

He closed the message and laughed, knowing what she was going to do.
Good ol' Celest, always brightening him up. A few seconds later a
red mail icon flashed above every ones'' heads. It opened itself,
reading:

"Attention all users: Nikedemus is in an extremely bad mood today.
I repeat, stay clear of the angry-looking black neko lest feel his
wrath."

Nikedemus chuckled to himself. "Maybe today won't be so boring after
all."

He padded down the path once more 5. mod [mod]

still there. 'Lazy mods,'(5) he These users manage certain

He continued down the main avenue and rounded through some double
doors and into the pub. He was greeted by silence. 'Wow, I didn't
know system messages were taken so seriously,' he thought to himself.

He sat on a stool and checked out the locals. Average traffic for
this time of day. Newbies just home from stool. He checked the stats
on a bunch of people. All level one. 'So it's true then. They do
travel in packs.'

He noticed one particular user in general though. He was in fact also
a newbie, but there was something about him. He chose to make a custom
character. Only dedicated users usually did that. The custom character
creator could be downloaded from the official CC website. It was a
tedious tool to use, though. Even the Cliff Notes version of the user
manual was unusually long. Fact was, not many took the time to make a
custom character. Most ended up frustrated and went along with a premade
one.

Nikedemus, determined to find out who this young man was, ran a stat
listing on him.

Jax - Level 1 -CONFIDENTIAL-
Custom - Sorcerers	Name: Chris Peterson
Registered: Today	Age: Sixteen

Notes: UserID: 749211
			MailID: 10274A

'Chris, huh,' he thought to himself. 'Well, Chris, let's just see what
kind of person you are.'

He walked over to the boy, taking in his appearance. He had soft-
looking light brown hair and a boyish face. He certainly was trying
to make an impact on people.

"Hello," Nikedemus said, taking a seat at the table Chris was sitting
at.

His eyes widened as he recognised the man stated in the system message.

"I'm not looking for any trouble, sir."

"Hey," Nikedemus retorted, annoyed, "can't I sit and have a chat
without being judged for being an administrator for once?"

"Sorry," Chris replied, looking shyly down.

"It's okay," he replied in a sudden mood swing of kindness, "so,
Chris..."

His face perked up at his real name.

Nikedemus smiled, continuing, "I noticed you made yourself a custom
character. Not many do that lately."

He looked down again shyly, "I got bored one day. My brother convinced
me to play this game. I had a few hours to kill so I decided to give
the character creator a shot."

"I see. Well, actually I don't because usually the user's manual on
the creator itself takes a few hours to read," he said, grinning, "you
must be a smart kid."

"I guess," he replied, blushing profusely.

"Well, Chris, er, Jax, it's been nice talking with you. Maybe we'll
see each other around. Hopefully I won't need to ban you one day."

Getting up to walk away, Nikedemus looked Chris straight in the eye
and, not so straightly winked at the boy. He blushed even more and
looked down at the table.

"Bye," he said quietly.

He looked back one more time at Chris, taking in his boyish beauty.

After all this time spent in The World, with all opportunities he had,
he was lusting over a newbie.
