Brendon tried to focus on the assignment that was due the following week.
He felt that he was missing something. It was like the other three were
keeping something from him. To Bren's way of thinking it had to do with
Pete. Bren sighed and felt his frustration shift as he thought about Pete.
Ever since school had started the little grade enlivener had, had his
infatuation. Bren knew he had a crush on Pete. His sister teased him
mercilessly about it. Thoughts of Pete made him turn to his sketch pad.
His sketch pad that contained dozens of sketches of the perfection that
Pete was.

Bren looked at his sketches and decided he would do something about it. He
called Tiff. Tiff seemed to be close to Pete she would help. Bren was
just going to go around Tiff's place except it was raining and he didn't
have his licence yet. Bren hated the rain, he was pretty sure all fire
elemental hated rain. Tiff picked up on the third ring. "To what do I owe
the pleasure of a phone call from one of the hottest guys at school"? Tiff
had turned into an attractive flirt. Bren was sure he called here a male
giggle in the background.

"I wanted to ask you about Pete". There were some shushing noises from the
other end of the phone. "You want to talk about Pete, I can't imagine why,
I'm far prettier don't you think Bren". Bren could hear the flirty smile
in Tiff's voice. "Cut the crap Tiff you know I'm gay", Tiff laughed it was
true she had suspected as much about all four of the year twelve boys.
"Fine did you want to talk to him now, the poor thing is blushing". Tiff
gave out a loud squeal apparently Pete had attacked her. Bren smiled
thinking of the small guy attacking the taller Tiff.

"I would if he wants to". There was a fair amount of giggling from the
Tiff and Pete as she handed him the phone. Bren's heart raced as he heard
Pete's shy voice on the other end. "Hi Brendon, Tiff said you wanted to
talk to me". Bren suddenly found his mouth dry and struggled to get
anything out at first. "Yea I wanted to know if you were. Well what I'm
trying to ask is if you are and if you would". Bren trailed off losing
confidence as he spoke to the boy that had played a major role in far too
many jerk off session. Pete giggled before responding. "Yes I'm gay and
would love to go out some time if that's what you are trying to ask".

Brendon let out a breath he had not noticed he was holding while Pete
answered his questions. "Um, well how about Saturday we can grab something
to eat and a movie". Pete agreed to a time and place to meat at the mall
as neither drove. Brendon hung up the call and flopped back on his bed.
He was now excited for Saturday, the frustration of earlier forgotten.

..............................................................................

Nichole pushed her long dark red hair back. She stretched her arms and
relaxed as she watched Pete. Pete was effortlessly floating in a stream of
air. "Do you feel it"? Nichole asked. Pete nodded once. Pete could feel
the effortless power of the air around him. It was like nothing he had
felt before. He smiled thinking of the calmness that surrounded Si. Si
gave of the impression of calm, in reality Pete knew the other boy was as
ever changing as the wind.

Alice entered the large sitting room where Nichole and Pete were
practicing. Alice took a seat next to Nichole and whispered. "His air
elemental is stronger than me", Nichole nodded and smiled over at Pete. It
had not been that long ago that she and Pete had hated each other. First
it had been Rob and then Jack. "Does he ever regret his choice"? Alice
raised one pale eyebrow before answering. "You are his fifth surly you can
tell". Nichole had a small smile when she thought about Jack there was no
regret.

"He's happy. He only gets sad when he thinks I'm upset". Pete lowered
himself to the ground. Both women looked at Pete a little embarrassed that
he had heard them. "My hearing has improved a lot", he said as he walked
from the room. Both women laughed as they watch him leave, he always had a
way of making people feel better.

..............................................................................

Derik sat on Brendan's bed and watched his best friend pace around his
room. It wasn't a nervous pace, it was clear his friend was excited about
something. "Would you tell me already? Your mum won't be happy if you
burn her floor again". Bren looked over at a rather large scorch mark on
his bed room floor. It had been three years ago and the four of them had
been showing off. It was fortunate that Jim had been quick to react. It
had saved the house from burning to the ground. "I haven't lost control
like that in well over a year". Derik just laughed at his friend. They
had all had accidents of one sort or another.

Bren sat in his computer chair swivelled around and grinned at his friend.
"I have a date", Bren said excitedly. Derik felt a heavy weight settle in
his stomach making him feel sick. He smiled for his friends benefit. "Is
she anyone I know", Brendon's smile slipped a little. He quickly recovered
as he jumped up from his chair. "No not really they are so cute though".
Derik grinned at the silly look that came over Brendon's face. "Well she's
one lucky girl", Derik was happy for his friend it did however confirm that
Bren would not want to be part of Pete's circle.

.............................................................................

Pete was sat on a bench with a faraway look. He was thinking of his first
movie date. It had been the first time the three of them had gone out
together as something more than friends. Tim and Darrel had argued over
who would be paying. In the end the pair had shared the cost not letting
Pete pay for a thing. They had sat in the cinema one either side of Pete
and had just held hands. The day had been perfect. Pete felt himself
crying again.

Tiff found him a sobbing mess on the bench. She didn't say anything just
sat down and pulled him into a hug. Pete had told her everything, when she
thought about it for too long she felt like crying for her friend. It was
a half hour later before Pete managed to get himself under control. "Sorry
I was just thinking about them". Tiff smiled and hugged him again. It
can't have been easy to lose your first loves that way. "What was it like
Pete? To be in love I mean". Tiff asked softly it was clear she wanted to
know but didn't want to upset Pete any further.

"It's like you no longer need air to live all you need is them. Your first
thought is them and your last. I suppose it would be different for
everyone but that's how I felt". Tiff nodded she kind of understood what
Pete was trying to say. "I was thinking about my date with Brendon
Saturday. It reminded me of my first movie date with Tim and Darrel".
Tiff saw the smile on Pete's face clearly it had been a good memory. "So
what are you going to do Saturday?" Tiff thought about it for a moment
this would be the first time since she had met Pete that she wasn't hanging
out with him on a Saturday. "I'm not sure, you want to hang out before you
go on your date, I can help you get ready". Pete grinned and agreed.

..............................................................................

Derik was surprised by the entrance of Bren to his room. It was just after
lunch on Saturday. "Which one"? Bren held up two polo shirts, one a pale
blue the other a dark green. Derik grinned at his nervous friend. "Hi
Bren, I'm fine and yourself". Bren threw the shirts at his friend in
frustration. "Derik now is not the time for pleasantries. Which shirt"?
Derik laughed and threw the blue one back at him. "Thankyou". Derik
grinned at his friend as he pulled of the shirt he was wearing and put on
the polo.

"Hay is your mum here", Derik saw his friends mums car in the drive. Bren
grinned at his friend, "No dumb ass I finally got my license. Nearly
fucked it again to. Stupid driving test". Derik congratulated his friend
he was the first in there group to get his licenses. He had also failed
the test twice before. "So you going to show off to your date". Bren
grinned and nodded.

..............................................................................

Pete sat across from Tiff. He was thankful for the company. He knew he
would have been a mess without her. As it was he was bouncing between
depressed and excited. "Just breathe Pete", your emotions are getting out.
Pet turned red with embarrassment. If fifths weren't in control of their
emotions elementals tended to feel the same emotions. "Thanks Tiff. Do I
look alright"? It was the fourth time he had asked. Tiff nodded again and
rolled her eyes. Pete got up and straightened the white long sleeve shirt
he was wearing. He had rolled the sleeves up and left it untucked from the
light jeans he was wearing.

"You look perfect little one now stop harassing Tiff". Jack walked into
the room with a wide grin. "Darrel and Tim would be happy to see you go
out". Jack whispered as he hugged Pete from behind. Pete nodded not
trusting he wouldn't start to cry again if he said anything. "I thought I
told you to stop molesting my brother". Rob walked in grinning defusing
what could have been another round of crying from Pete. The three laughed.
Leaving Tiff confused and looking between them. "We haven't done anything
in three years as you well know". The three laughed again. Tiff was in
shock, "Do you have this effect on all male elementals"? She asked as
Nichole entered the room.

"No Tiff he has it on all elementals, he's a very strong fifth as you
know". Tiff did know if it hadn't been for the fact that she already
attached to her cousin she would haven't wanted to be part of his circle.
"Getting my circle was difficult with him around". Tiff was a little
confused by Nichol's obvious dislike of what had happened. "I tried really
hard to get Jack and my brother away from her. I was thirteen and they
were older". Tiff's eyes went very wide. Pete had tried to start a circle
at thirteen. "It's alright now", Nichole smiled and hugged Pete. "However
your date is here and would no doubt like to be rescued from Dan". Pete
raised an eyebrow, "Ok could you get him out of the house before he and Dan
set the house of fire". Pete laughed and raced to the door.

..............................................................................

Bren sat across from the older fire elemental. It was clear they were
sizing each other up. "You're strong", Bren nodded. "I can take you now
but once you're in a circle you will walk all over me". Bren was shocked
at the older fire elementals bluntness. It also made him wonder if he was
like that. The pair turned as they heard soft foot falls approaching.
Bren knew it had to be Pete. And sure enough he strode into the room he
was stunning. Dan looked at the little fifth and grinned. "Stunning as
always little one", Pete smiled and hugged Dan. "Be careful he is
extremely powerful", Dan whispered to Pets who nodded once.

Bren watched the interaction it was clear that the big guy loved Pete. If
he was being honest with himself he was jealous of the close relationship.
Pete walked over to him and smiled sweetly. That smile made Bren forget
his jealousy. "How are we getting to the mall"? Pete asked. Bren held up
the keys. "You are to be my first passenger", Bren was excited. Pete just
nodded. Bren grinned and followed Pete to the door.

...............................................................................

Derik, Si and Jim were sat in Derik's back yard when they all heard Tiff
return. They had all felt a difference in Pete through the circle bond
they shared with him. "Maybe Tiff knows why he's so excited", Si mused as
he looked over at Derik's neighbour's house. Jim grunted he like the other
two wished Pete would talk to them half as much as he spoke to Tiff. "Well
if anyone knows she would. He tells her everything". The other two nodded
in agreement.

The three of them heard the back door of Tiff's place open and close. Tiff
walked into the back yard. "Are you three going to mope all day or come
and talk". Si frowned and then grinned. He directed an air stream, picked
Tiff up and more or less threw her over the fence easily catching her in
another air stream. Tiff glared at Si as she straightened her clothes.
"Thank you Si but next time I would rather walk". Si grinned at her, "He
told me to tell you he was following up on something". Tiff smiled at the
confused faces. She rolled her eyes, "He's on a date that's why he's
excited".

Derik frowned, who did Pete know that he would go on a date with. "Pete's
right for four guys that have known each other for ever and share
everything except this one thing". Jim laughed and Si looked stunned. "It
can't be, he can't be gay as well can he", Derik frowned as he looked at
the others waiting for them to say something. "I think he is and slipped
behind your back and asked Pete out before you". Tiff said with a laugh.
Derik was too stunned to say anything. He was jealous of the fact that
Brendon had asked Pete out. He was also jealous that Pete had agreed.
Derik had always had a crush on Brendon and had never acted on it. It felt
to him as if he had missed out on both.

.............................................................................

The car trip was quick and filled with pointless chatter about school.
Pete could see that Bren was proud to be driving. "What are we going to
see"? He asked Bren who shrugged it didn't really matter to him what they
saw. "Perhaps we should eat first, have you had lunch", Pete shook his
head. "Then that's what we will do, you don't mind food court food". Pete
laughed and shook his head. "No Bren I don't mind eating in the food
court". Bren grinned happy that Pete was happy to go along with most
everything.

The pair sat in a quiet part of the food court they had both chosen to get
subs from subway. Pete had only gotten a six incher. He had just grinned
when Bren had said that if he ate more he might grow. For a time they sat
in silence eating. Pete broke the silence by asking Bren why he had never
told the others he was gay. Brendon looked at Pest before answering.
"It's not that easy, I mean since we were small we all wanted to be in the
same circle. And with me being gay I don't think it would work very well".
Pete nodded his head in agreement to what Bren said. After all it would be
true if the other three had been straight. "Did you ever think to ask them
if they were gay"? Bren laughed loudly drawing the attention of a few
others that were close by.

"I'm sure they would have said something if they were". Pete raised an
eyebrow before responding making Bren a little uncomfortable. "Really,
like you telling them", Pete asked innocently. Bren was a little stunned
and lost for words. "I'm sorry Bren but the four of you have been rather
silly about this. You should really talk to them. I think you will find
them receptive to what you have to say". Bren looked at Pete and nodded,
"You might be right, you ready to check out the movies". Pete smiled and
nodded.

...............................................................................

Tiff had left the other three to talk. Derik wasn't saying much, "Maybe we
should go find them". Si and Jim looked at him and nodded. It was
probably for the best if they all got everything out in the open. "Do you
think Pete's going to say anything about us", Jim asked. Derik shook his
head indicating he didn't think so. "At most I think he may talk him into
talking to us", Jim said. Si frowned, "I don't think they will have the
chance to talk". The others looked at him with curiosity. "I wouldn't be
surprised if they are attacked". He said with concern in his voice.

It was true when ever Pete had been alone with one of them for any period
of time they had encountered a corrupted elemental spirit possessing
something or someone. "I think you may be right", Jim said with concern.
Derik nodded his agreement. A corrupt fire spirit would be extremely
dangerous. "Tiff said they were going to the movies, hopefully it won't
happen in the cinema", Derik said. "Well we should get going are your
parents home Derik". Derik shook his head, they would have to make their
own way to the mall, and hopefully they weren't too late.

...............................................................................

The movie was good. Bren had taken Pete's hand as soon as the lights had
gone down. At some point Pete had lent into Bren who had put his arm
around him. Pete loved being close to Bren he was so warm. It had made
him a little sad at first Darrel had also been warm. It must have been a
fire elemental thing.

Bren for his part just loved how close and affectionate Pete was. As the
movie ended the pair broke apart before the lights came back up. They
smiled at each other and exited the cinema. It was as they were leaving
that the alarms for fire or smoke started. Pete groaned he had been
worried that something would happen. "Maybe it's just a drill", Bren
offered, Pete shook his head and pointed to the smoke. "No and I doubt its
natural, can you push the flames aside to let everyone out". Bren nodded
and focused on controlling the flames.

Pete watched as the crowed ran out the exit. What he saw next gave him
chills. If he hadn't known that the creatures were possessed by corrupted
fire spirits he would have said flightless dragons. There were three.
They must have been some kind of lizard. All of them were a blaze with
what was clearly very hot burning fire. They were spreading the flames
everywhere. Bren was focusing on the flames trying to control them trying
to stop the spread. "I wish Jim were here he would have doused them with
water and had this out in no time". Bren said to Pete who was just looking
defeated.

"I'm sorry I didn't have time to tell you Brendon. But this keeps
happening and then I'm forced to join you to my circle". Bren looked at
Pete stunned his focus on the flames slipping. The spread was rapid.
"Bren focus I need to do this but cant if the building is destroyed". Bren
refocused on controlling the flames.

Pete reached out with his mind and formed the circle bond with Bren. It
was different this time, this time the circle was complete, Pete felt
complete. "Focus on the flames only this time smother them instead of
giving them fuel". Bren knew what Pete wanted him to do he had studied the
higher skills of his element. Pete felt the others close by. As the fires
died down Pete could see the others attacking the creatures he couldn't
call them dragons. He looked over at Bren who looked exhausted smothering
the fires had taken it out of him. Pete smiled and let some of his energy
trickle into Bren. Bren's eyes widened in surprise, "Better than coffee",
Bren smiled and nodded.

Pete returned his attention to the lizards, the others had weakened them it
was now safe to try and cleanse the fire spirits. Pete focused using
cleansing light once more. He was happy to see it working. The fire
spirits thanked him and the lizards. Three relatively small geckos ran
off. As he watched the geckos run he spotted Derik talking to Bren. As he
watched them he smiled sadly it was clear to him that the pair were already
in love with each other. He didn't feel used or really upset for that
matter. He was kind of happy that they had finally admitted it to each
other.

"You don't mind do you", Si asked he and Jim had walked over to him. Pete
looked over at the other pair before responding. "No, they need each other
and we need this circle to be strong, someone is targeting us. If I were
to try and pull them apart it would harm the circle. Could you tell them
that I would like to see them. That is I would like to see them when they
are ready I will be at the park. With a small grin Pete misted into the
air and vanished. "Fuck he's strong only really powerful fifths can turn
into mist and to travel as well", Si exclaimed. Jim just nodded his
agreement.

.............................................................................

The park was quiet as Pete returned his body to normal. He had always
wanted to be able to mist and travel. Only a fifth with a full circle
could do it. He had picked the park because he felt safe here. He waited
for Bren and Derik at pick nick bench. It wasn't long before the pair
joined him. As he looked up he saw them quickly let go of each other's
hand. He smiled to himself they made a cute couple.

"Jim said you wanted to talk", Derik said as the pair sat across from him.
Pete nodded acting as cool and calm as he could. "I wanted to say sorry to
Bren, I had intended to ask you to be part of my circle but, well you
know". Bren nodded he knew, he had been surprised that Pete was fifth.
However that did explain the behaviour of the people at Pete's house.
"Well anyway I also wanted to say that although you are both really
attractive. It is clear to me you belong with each other". He smiled at
the pair who were again holding hands. "Well I'm sure you both have things
you would like to say and do with each other".

Brendon and Derik got the hint. Pete was happy for them he just didn't
want to see it at the moment. Both of the older boys hugged him. "Thank
you for letting me join", Bren whispered to Pete as he hugged him. Pete
smiled at him. He continued to smile as he watched them walk off. Once
they were out of sight he let his smile slip and the tear fall. He knew it
was for the best but still it hurt.

..............................................................................

Greg was jogging when he saw Brendon and Derik walk off hand in hand. He
shook his head but smiled. Greg had known Brendon, Derik, Simon and Jim a
long time. He had been in many of the same classes and attended the same
birthday parties when they were younger. However as they had grown up,
Greg and the other four had gone their different ways. Greg was into
sports and academics. And honestly he had no idea what the other four were
into. They were all fit it healthy and Derik clearly lifted weights. But
beyond that he had no idea.

What didn't surprise him was that Derik and Brendon appeared to be a
couple. It more just confirmed what was said around school. As Greg
jogged further on he saw the new kid. Well he wasn't really the new kid
anymore. Everyone at school knew of him and talked about him. The guy was
seemingly perfect. Greg was shocked to see the normally happy appearing
guy upset sat at a park bench. He also felt drawn to him, Greg was bi
sexual and out to everyone at home and school.

Pete looked up and wiped his eyes as he felt someone sit down next to him.
"Here", the guy handed him a small packet of tissues. "You're a mess, a
cute mess but a mess all the same". Greg was pleased to see the guy smile.
"I'm Greg", Greg held his hand out to shake Pete's. Pete hesitated a
moment before shaking hands. "Pete, and thank you", Greg shrugged his
shoulders and stood up. "Anytime, I'll see you around school". With that
Greg was gone leaving a somewhat confused Pete.
