Chapter Four: The Red Tag

2400 miles away, across a stormy, icy sea, an old man, awake from a
restless sleep at 2AM. It was dark outside, but he could hear the howling,
almost shrieking cries of the wind as it battered the cliffs what separated
his beautiful English country home from the furies of the vengeful North
Atlantic.

His wife of forty years stirred slightly in her sleep, mumbling something
he did not understand. Careful not to wake her, he got up from bed and
found his way, gently, to the bathroom across the hallway. He tried to
relieve himself, but his efforts were in vain. He felt a burning hot pain
seep up from his privates, and winced.

In his private study, awaiting the next pang of pain, he sat gingerly in a
tall armchair, with a glass of cold water, his eyes, moist from the
exertion. His laptop gently emitted a soft, high pitched beep every few
seconds. He put on his glasses and logged in, and found an email awaiting
his attention.

He squinted through his glasses to find the switch to his table lamp, and
turned in on. In the warm glow his racks of books and tomes felt
comforting. Before he opened the file to study the case, he paused a
moment, his pain returning ever so slightly, and then with steely resolve
decided to get on with his work at hand. Several hours later, the sun was
still hidden by grey clouds that thundered and raged over the coastline of
Maine. Dorothy was up and about, and he came and sat by his side, with two
cups of coffee. He gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and then pointed to
his laptop.

"Who is it?", she asked.

"Classic case", he replied, taking off his glasses and rubbing his eyes.
"Schoolboy, possibly 15 or 16 years of age judging from his language
skills. Homosexual tendencies, several emails with friends about
independent exploration, subscription to several mailing lists from high
risk websites, and most damning of all, on two separate occasions googled
up a particular place where civil unrest subsequently occurred within a
period of 24 hours. You know the type, Dora."

She looked at him, smiling, as she pulled her grey sweater tighter around
her.

"Edward, we have spoken many times about this new found impulsiveness of
yours. Have you read through all his emails and text messages?"

"Yes, I have Dora. This is not an impulsive decision. I have been sitting
here and sifting through his entire history these past few hours. I woke
early."

"Let's have breakfast, and then go out for a walk. I want to go to the
market for some supplies, and we do have a lunch with the Craigs
today. Perhaps a more thoughtful decision may come to you towards evening?"

He smiled, and pulled his wife closer to him.

"Dora, I know I confide in you completely, but surely, you can't suggest
that I don't know my job."

"The lord has taught us to have compassion and mercy, and I want you to
think about what may happen to a child's future, if you issue a red tag
order."

"He is not a child my dear, not if childhood be measured by innocence of
action and thought. Look at these my dear", he said, pointing to some lines
of text exchanged between Tashu and Inna from several months ago.

Dora read silently, and then, looked away for a long while. Then she stood
up and walked away to the window over looking the sea.
