Gabriel's Journey.

Chapter 1

"Many a happiness in life, as many a disaster, can be due to chance, but
the peace within us can never be governed by chance" Maurice Maeterlinck

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLLLLLAAAANNNGG!

"What!?"Hello? Grrrrr! *yawn*

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! CLLLLLAAAANNNGG!

"Attention Mr Ash - There is somebody at the door" Announced the voxcomp in
the slightly effeminate tone that Gabriel had programmed into her.

"Yeah, thanks a lot - stupid piece of..." Gabriel climbed out of his bed,
grumbling as he did so. He glanced at the wall clocking, luminous numbers
ticking away the time until he had to get up for work. It read 3.30 am.
THREE THIRTY? What on earth would anybody be doing up at this time of the
night? Gabriel frowned. Someone from work? No. Surly not? There shouldn't
be a problem ,not on the night shift. Unless....Unless! The Atmospheric
compressors! Oh My god!!

Panicking now Gabriel hopped around the room, desperately trying to find
something to wear. There must be a problem with the converter valves, or
maybe the pressure manifold, or maybe even...Ouch! Finally Gabriel found
his shoe, by simple method of tripping over it. He landed heavily in the
soft plush of the shag pile carpet and winced as he felt sudden pain flare
from his back. OOWWW!

"God damn it! Hang on!" Stumbling around in the dark, his brain fogged with
sleep, he managed to locate the other shoe and a bath robe, tripping over
the coffee table and smashing a small glass figurine of a dolphin that he
had bought back on earth a few months ago. "Damn it all to hell" he swore
again! He had LIKED that figurine, now he would have to go on GRID to get
another. And once he did that he knew that he always got attracted to some
of the more...exotic sites. The ones that cost an awful lot of creds that
he couldn't afford. Even a Terraform Engineer didn't get paid as much as
most people thought.

He hauled on the robe, wincing as his back protested and stumbled over to
the door. "Ummmmm, Maggie, lights half brightness" He said, trying to
stifle a yawn. Then he frowned. Why the hell hadn't he put the lights on
befor? What was wrong with him? Sleep deprivation he decided. After all, it
was three thirty.

"Yes Mr Ash" The Voxcomp replied smoothly and immediately the apartment was
flooded with a soft bluish hue. Better. "Ummmm...who is it?" Inwardly he
cursed, he should have upgraded to the Cillid 9 secsys. (security system)
After all at least he would be able to see out into the hallway and get an
idea of who the hell was bothering him. Probably one of those autovid
salesmen he decided. They never slept.

He thumbed a switch "Hello. Who ever's there, this better be good!" No
reply from the other side of the door but Gabriel thought he detected heavy
breathing. The kind that you got from running too hard. He frowned. "hello"
he said again, more cautiously this time. This time there was no mistake. A
plaintive snuffle, ending in what sounded like a sob. Gabriel rolled his
eyes. Great! Just his luck. 3.30 am and here he was, needing to be up in 4
hours, standing by his door having a one way conversation with someone who
was probably nothing more than an addict on a Rapz comedown.

"Look, he said into the speaker, "I'm sorry you feel like shit! Hey, I'd
probably feel the same. And I'm sure that you felt that turning to drugs
was your only way out. But, here's the thing. I have to up for work in the
morning and quite frankly I need the sleep. Soooo, either fez up or its
goodnight". He stopped speaking and immediately felt guilty for what he had
just said. It probably wasn't the poor guys fault. He could have just been
a victim of circumstance. Probably some poor bum who had sneaked aboard the
transport on Earth and hidden till they arrived. A lost soul looking for a
better life that he hadn't found.

Gabriel listened again carefully. The heavy breather was still outside,
although the sobbing seemed to have stopped. Gabriel pondered what to do
for a moment then went over to the fridge, opened it and retrieved a pack
of self heating noodles in (what was supposed to be) chow mane sauce. On
his way back to the door he grabbed an energy umbrella. Similar to a
regular umbrella except for where the metal spokes would have been at the
top. Instead there was large metal hoop attached and circling the top of
the pole. With the flick of a switch, an energy field was generated inside
the hoop that caused rain, wind and even sand particles to bounce off.
Having one on Mars was a definite advantage. Although the world was about
80% terraformed, sometimes the natural ecology of the planet had an uncanny
way of trying to reassert itself and massive dust storms were not uncommon!
Stopping back at the door he turned his attention back to the speaker
again.

"Ok pal, I'm opening up with some food. Don't try anything, I'm armed" He
chuckled wryly to him self. Probably, anybody with a feather duster could
have overpowered him. Gabriel wasn't much of a fighter, although he was
physically fit enough. Nice Ab's, a six pack and (at least he thought so)
great legs!

He punched in the unlock code and the panel went green. The door slid
open. Gabriel brandished his Umbrella."Ok pal what's the probl......he
stopped, the words dying on his lips. Staring back at him were two large,
liquid green eyes. Wavy chestnut brown hair cascaded down a slender body.
Perfect nose above perfect lips. So goddamn perfect. Except that... except
that, they were not so perfect anymore. One of the eyes looked swollen and
puffy and blood was trickling down from the corner of that beautiful mouth.
Gabriel did a double take. He recognised that face instantly. It was Zak.

Gabriel had met Zak 4 weeks previously at a gay bar in New Seattle. He had
been cruising, trying to find someone to share the night with. He wasn't
promiscuous but Gabriel had needs, and it had reached the point where
jacking off just wasn't helping anymore. He needed to be with a guy again.
He was in a bar called the Pink Flamingo, and had decided it was one of the
cheesiest most run down two bit places he had ever visited. Men everywhere
in tight leather, or drag, or even openly naked. The trouble was that this
wasn't a joint of gorgeous hunks. This place was for guys who had
reaaalllyy let themselves go.

Typically, as soon as he entered, it seemed that everybody knew he was
there. It was if a huge neon sign was hanging above his head flashing,
young single and THIN! (it eemd important in a joint like this!) He was
propositioned about a 100 times within the 30 seconds it took him to
decided this wasn't the place for him. He made a break from the jaws of
death and dived for the door. He didn't make it. A hugely overweight man
with balls like shrivelled prunes eyed him lustily has he bounced off the
guys ample midriff.

"Allright then! What do we have here!" the guy said with a voice that
sounded like somebody turning a rusty bolt in a hole too small for it. "Up
for it are we?" he wiggled his hips in a provocative way. Gabriel didn't
know whether to laugh or gag! "Ummmmmm, not really, I'm too tired. Long day
you know! I was..uhhh..just looking for a friend!

"Awwwww, come on pal" said the giant "just one little snuggle! - it won't
hurt" The flabby mass closed the gap. Gabriel shuddered. Uggghh! He
couldn't even thing about it! Yuk! "Ahhhhh, wellll, ummmmm" He glanced
desperately at the door but there was no way to get around d this guy. He
was like a mountain! Fight or flight. He wasn't able to one and totally
unprepared to do the other. He groaned. He was going to have to accept
this. The piggy face leaned closer to his and he felt an erect lump pressed
against his thigh. He nearly threw up. This was revolting, he was about to
be kissed by the human trifle! How had he managed to get into this mess?
He offered up a quick prayer to a god who he didn't believe in prepared
himself for the worse.

The kiss when it came was...well, unbelievable. Soft sensuous lips engulfed
his and a tongue gently eased through to caress the inside of his mouth. He
groaned slightly. This was good, so good! He returned with gusto, enjoying
the feelings that had been deprived of him for so many months. Together
their tongues danced as Gabriel sucked in the delicious taste of this...
this...Urgh! He pulled away, disgusted with the thought. Uck! What was he
thinking, this guy was gross! He was....he was.....Gabriel started into
captivating green eyes, long chestnut hair, a slim body dressed in leather
trousers, jacket and white shirt He was probably about 19 or 20, the same
age as Gabriel. This Adonis was standing in front of the huge monster with
a slight smirk on his face. "Sorry pal" My partners taken!" Said the guy,
flashing a huge grin at the obese putz. Gabriel could do nothing but stare
open mouthed as the gorgeous fellow dragged him outside the bar and off
down the street.

They stopped when they reached the end of the street. Under the powerful
glow of the Kelephon street lamps Gabriel was finally able to get a look at
his would be saviour. His view did not disappoint. The guy was about
Gabriel height, a good 6 foot and was slim. Not muscle, more wiry and thin
but not emaciated. His face was slightly long, with prominent cheekbones
and liquid green eye that were huge. Gabriel felt could stare into them
forever . The mouth was small but perfectly formed with full, kissable
lips.. The nose looked like it had been chiselled from a perfect statue,
straight and smooth on the unblemished skin. Gabriel drank in the image.
Wow! This guy was a beauty. He realised he was staring and tore his eyes
away, staring at the other guys shoes.

"Uhhh, thanks a lot, you saved me from horror! I thought I was going to be
ill" he said, smiling wryly. The other guy said nothing and smiled at him
softly, green eyes lighting up. He winced has his face pulled taunt and
Gabriel thought h detected a bruise on one cheek. Or did he? The light from
the street lamp cast a lot of shadow and he couldn't be certain. "So, umm,
what's you name?" Gabriel offered. "Zak" said the other guy, in a musical
singsong sort of voice. Gabriel looked up and grinned broadly, feeling more
natural now that they were on first name terms. This conversation was
getting better by the moment. "Well I'm Gabriel, Gabriel Ash. And thanks
again. I really mean it. I thought I was gonna have to suffer there!" Zak
smiled his slow soft smile again. It was heart melting and Gabriel felt his
stomach lurch slightly. "Don't mention it" Zak whispered. There was a long
pause. Then a longer pause, palpable tension between them.

"So. where do you live?" questioned Gabriel. He thought he detected a
slight sagging of that perfect mouth for a second but Zak managed to
maintain his mouth watering innocent smile and shook his head. "Oh,
nowhere, here and there" "Homeless?" A nod.

Gabriel knew he was lying immediately. The clothes he wore were fairly new
and in fashion. He was clean and smelled of an expensive cologne that
Gabriel owned (another little foible he had bought on GRID) This was not
the get up of the long time homeless. He didn't have the vacant sorrow of a
Rapz freak and he didn't seem drunk. What did this guy want? Why were they
still standing here, 5 minutes after meeting and not talking. Was he
interested? This seemed a pretty bizarre was of showing it. Gabriel pulled
out his wallet.

"Look, if its money you need I've got a little". He pulled out Cred slivers
and examined them under the light. "Umm a 10, 20...". He felt a hand close
around his wrist and looked up at Zak who was staring at him sadly and
shaking his head slightly. Gabriel stuffed the cash back into his wallet
and gave him the once over again. Damn he was good looking. A guy could get
lost in those eyes. Another long pause. Lots of staring seemed to be
involved and he got the feeling Zak was trying to tell him something
without speaking. Gabriel didn't know what. It was as if...as if......He
blinked shook his head "Pull yourself together Gabriel" he thought. This
guy is not interested. parties over and its time to go."

"Well, uhhh, thanks for all your help. Ummm. I really appreciate it.
And... uhh...hope you...ummm..find somewhere to live soon" stammered
Gabriel, hoping beyond hope that something, anything was going to happen
but not really expecting it. He was right. Zak just stood there looking
forlorn and staring at him, his eyes large and liquid. He looked for all
the world like he was going to burst into tears. Gabriel shook his head.
"Well...bye, good luck!" He turned and started off up the street. What
was wrong with him. With a guy like that he should have probably made the
first move. Why hadn't he. He shook his head. It just hadn't felt right.

He'd taken about fifteen steps when a tap on his shoulder made him turn.
"Look" he said half turning "I know that you really need...Mpppphhh" The
sentence ended abruptly as strong, warm, inviting lips curled and merged
with his own and a tongue snaked into him, caressing him. It scoured the
inside of his mouth with delicious fire, teasing every nerve and fibre.
Gabriel stood like a fool and was kissed before Zak finally broke off.
Liquid green eyes started at him expectantly. In that moment, the briefest
second of time, Gabriel knew it was too late. There was no hope for him
now. He was utterly lost in those eyes. He wanted Zak and he wanted him
more utterly and completely lost without him. Then he was engulfed again
and all rational thought fled his mind as a wave of pleasure crashed over
him.

Somehow they managed to get back to Gabriel apartment, lips seemingly
lingering forever. They were both exited, both grinding and arching against
each other. They wre animals of passion as they ripped the clothes off each
other and collapsed onto the bed, tongues and mouths exploring every
secret, nuance and and joy the other had to offer.

And then they made love....
