Thirteen
Ban took a quick shower and then went to his room for a nap.
He needed sleep. They all did, and for many hours, but they
wanted to finish before Peabody grew unhappy. When he entered his
room, he saw an alert flashing on a display. He closed his eyes.
It was just what they didn't need. He went to the display and
read. A very large rock had been detected that would probably hit
Earth in three hundred and thirty-two years. Their ship's arrival

"What is it Ban?"

Peabody with you to destroy it. The rest of us can rest the day
you'll be doing it. You and Peabody can nap on the way there and

"It is about a six hours away." Lan nodded.
"Peabody will really enjoy it."
"I think so. You are going to have to go around the sun, so
you could even fly by Venus if you don't mind taking longer."
"We will leave in the morning."
Lan left Ban's room. He was really tired, but he decided to
make sandwiches for the trip before he went back to sleep. While
he was making them, he wondered if he should invite Lin. He
didn't want to, of course. A full day alone with Peabody would be
incredible, but he wondered what Peabody would want. He sighed.
He thought he knew the answer. Peabody would probably want both
of them, which would mean Lin would be sitting with Peabody while
Lan piloted. Peabody might have a medical emergency and Lan
realized Lin really needed to be there. He finished the
sandwiches and went to bed.
Lan woke while Peabody was still sleeping. He could smell
coffee, so he went to see if Lin was around. He was.
"Have you spoken to Ban."
"Yes. I really need to go, Lan."
"I know."
"Oh. I was sure you would want him to yourself."
"I do, but he is pregnant and you need to be there."
"Thank you, Lan. I promise to give you and Peabody time
alone. I will go up front and pretend I know how to pilot a
ship."
"Good. Help me gather snacks and drinks. I will get a
cooler."
"I'll do that. Why don't you make us a big breakfast."
"That sounds like a good idea."
Lan started making waffles. Peabody stumbled into the
kitchen.
"Waffles! I love you!" he said to Lan.

Peabody looked around. There was a lot of food!
"Why don't you sit down with your coffee?"
"What's with all the food?"
"We are going to have an adventure."

"A rock about three quarters the size of the one that is

the other side of the sun."

shuttles are. How fast are they, by the way? What is their

"Sixty percent of lightspeed, but only for a short time. They
use an enormous amount of fuel at that speed."
"We will leave after we have breakfast and you walk Oscar."
"I don't believe Oscar has ever been on a killer-meteor
killer flight before!"
Well, he is only four months old," Lin said. They all

"When would it hit Earth if we didn't destroy it?"
"A little over three hundred years."
"Can we afford to wait for Oscar to tinkle?"

"How will you destroy the rock?"
Lan called out, "We will use an explosive, first. If that
doesn't work, we have several other methods we can use."
Oscar got bored and Peabody put a blanket of the floor. Oscar
lay down on it and fell asleep.
"Do you want to take nap, Peabody?" Lin asked.
"A nap or sex. I am trying to decide."

"There it is in the center of the spiral on the display," Lan

shaped like one. It grew larger on the display as they approached
it.

"Is this the first time you have done this, destroyed one of

"No. This is the fourth one we've gone after. When we arrived
in your solar system, we stopped right at the edge of the
asteroid belt. Space is bent by our hyperdrive. Does that make
any sense at all?"
"I remember reading that gravity bends space, or something
like that," Peabody said.
"Yes, that is so. Anyway, we normally use hyperdrive outside
of star systems where the temporary bend in space doesn't affect
anything significantly. Our ship was out of control, though and
we stopped right where the objects most likely to be affected,
small bodies, that is, are located. We caused many of them to
shift orbits."
"Yikes!"
"We have our computer tracking them. When it identifies ones
that might impact the Earth or Mars, we destroy them."
Lan stopped the ship and targeted the rock.
"Ready?" he asked Peabody.
"Should we say a few words before we kill it?" he asked,
grinning.
"How about `good bye'?" Lin suggested.
"Perfect!" Peabody said.
"Make hashbrowns of it, Lan!" They laughed.
Lan fired and the rock exploded. Several other shots hit the
largest pieces. The computer kept firing.
"The computer will keep firing to break up pieces that are
large enough to cause damage in case of impact."
"Small rocks burn up in Earth's atmosphere. Is Mars'
atmosphere thick enough to do that?" Peabody asked.
"Smaller rocks do burn up. We have ground-based defenses on
Mars that target larger rocks that will hit near our base."
The computer stopped firing.
"Well, that's it. Ready to go home?"
Peabody grinned. "Ready!"
He got up and walked back to the seats. Oscar looked guilty
and Peabody found a puddle. He picked Oscar up. "It's OK, boy."
Oscar licked him. Lin sopped up the puddle and threw the paper
towels away. Lin put the seats back up and they sat. Peabody put
Oscar on the seat next to them.
"How do you feel?" Lin asked him.

"It's making me very nervous. I think all my mother's
warnings not to look at the sun are being replayed loudly in my

"Better!"

clock. It was one AM.
"Where is Lin?"
"He took Oscar out."
"Thank you, Lan."
"For what?"

Lin and Oscar walked back into the room. Peabody smiled at
him.
"Thank you, Lin for being there. For everything."
"There is nowhere any of us would rather be than with you."
Peabody sighed. He lay down and Lan and Lin lay on each side of
him. He fell asleep.
