Raven: The Hands of Ada
Part 1: Into the Night Sky

In every child dreams take flight
Incandescent as a moonlit night
In every hour the stars do turn
Darkness doth the sunlight yearn
In the morn the sparrow flies
And with the night the dreaming dies

Chapter 1: The Dreamer

Warrenville was like any other town you might find, suburban and
quaint it attracted many families for its rustic charm and location close
to Boston. The many trees and lakes offered a change of scenery away from
the city life and also offered a quiet place to raise a family... or so
they tell me.

I've lived in Warrenville for my whole life. My father Dan works in the
court as a bailiff and my mom Judy teaches at the local Community
College. Our house is a small three season lake ranch that my father
converted to a house when my older sister had been born and then expanded
it again when I was born. It was modest, but it was good enough to raise a
family and it was also right on the lake offering wonderful views.

Not that you could see them this time of night, the stars were out
and I was once again sitting outside on a rock gazing up at the stars. I'm
seventeen and have long brown hair that I normally pull back into a
ponytail. Tonight it flowed past my shoulders as I leaned back against the
rock looking upwards. My eyes were a murky hazel that shined like silver in
the dark reflection of the water below me. This was my comfort and this was
peace as I dangled my feet in the warm summer water erasing my mind of all
thought as I gazed into the infinity above me.

"Dusty are you going to stay out there all night, you have to get
ready for the big day tomorrow?"

I was brought out of a trance and glanced behind me my mom was
standing on the back of the porch

"Yea mom" I replied "I'll be back in, in a minute"

Tomorrow would begin my senior year at Birchmont Regional High and
to be honest I'm not looking forward to this year more than any other
year. Each year it seemed like more and more people would make fun of me or
pick on me. As far back as I can remember my parents thought it would be a
great idea for me to do gymnastics. It was a shock to them and to me just
how many kids knew the word `faggot' in the third grade. They then turned
to swimming only to find that it wasn't any more popular than gymnastics
and I stopped competing last year after months of pleading with them to
allow me to quit.

I had loved swimming, I was really tall for my age I towered at
just over six feet tall and many years of acrobatics and swimming gave me a
very thin and sleek body. I was talented at swimming but last year
something happened and... oops can't think about that right now...

I finally tore my gaze away from the stars and pulled my feet out
of the warm water into the cool night air making the ends of my toes numb.

I carefully tiptoed over the pine needles and small rocks back to
the deck off the back of the house and climbed the stairs to meet my mother

"Don't forget to wipe your feet" dad called from the living room

I wiped my feet on the floor mat and followed my mom into the house
shutting the screen door behind me

"You ready for school tomorrow?" dad asked talking over the noise
of the TV

"Yea" I replied shrugging my shoulders

"That doesn't sound too enthusiastic sport" dad replied

"Well I'm not too enthusiastic about it either truth be told" I
replied `ha they don't know the half of it'

I made my way upstairs to my room and kicked off my clothes and
hopped into bed turning on the fan on my side table, setting an alarm and
shutting my eyes and eventually falling asleep.

It always seemed to amaze me that despite my problems hitting golf
balls with a huge driver, or hitting a baseball, or even giving a good
soccer ball a kick, I seemed to have no problems finding the snooze button
on my alarm clock from a dead sleep first try every time. A feat I managed
three times today before finally pulling myself out of bed.

As my mind began to wake up the more and more I began to dread
school. But mechanically I gathered up my clothes and headed for my morning
meditation ritual in the shower. I liked showering before school because it
helps wake me up. It also allows me time to think, to be alone and to
contemplate what I want to accomplish... that usually includes wristing one
out before I step out of the shower.

Mission accomplished! I got out of the shower and grabbed my
clothes. Today's flavor was a simple clean cut pair of jeans with a well
fitted tee-shirt with a nice AE tee over it. I could pull off preppy if I
wanted... so there!

I grabbed all my new notebooks and binders my mom got me last
week. Lord knows they'll be half full of doodles by tomorrow afternoon. I
chucked them all into my backpack and rushed down the stairs to say goodbye
to my mom before catching the bus

"You have a good day sweetheart" mom called from the kitchen before
appearing and rushing to give me a good hug "I'll be back shortly after you
this afternoon"

I'm going to admit the hug made me feel a little bit better... a
little

"Okay mom" I replied giving her a peck on the cheek walking out the
front door and down the street to the bus stop.

I used to be able to meet the bus at the front of the house last year but
now that I am in big man a senior in High School I have to walk down the
street because obviously a year makes a huge difference. Especially when
getting hit by a car cause there are no sidewalks on my street. I don't
have a car yet because my parents want me to focus on school and won't let
me work, and they can't afford a car... I know I know... catch 22 it sucks.

`Fucking bus company' I think as a mutter and curse my way down the road to
the corner where I am supposed to meet it.

To make the scene more dramatic it was drizzling. God even didn't have the
decency to make it rain he had to make it more uncomfortable, I wasn't wet
I was sticky. I was so caught up in my misery I didn't see the person
approach from behind me

	"Hi... Dustin right?"

I whirled around and standing on the corner behind me was Colleen Bentley
who was a grade behind me. She was in the band in school and was carrying
her flute. I didn't know her very well but she stood next to me waiting for
the bus

"Ready for high school?" she asked breaking the silence which was
beginning to become awkward

"As I'll ever be I suppose" I replied

"Why don't you drive to school, you're a senior right?" Colleen
asked making me annoyed

	"Because I don't have a car" I stated

"Don't you have a friend who could give you a ride?" she asked and
my face burned in humiliation.

	"No" I said flatly

"Oh sorry" she said "This drizzle really sucks"

`Finally to which something I can totally agree' I thought

"yea this blows" I said causing her to crack a smile at me and just
like that the tension was over and lord and behold the bus was pulling up.

Colleen darted forward and I followed climbing up into the bus
taking a seat not towards the back but not in the front either.

The ride took about an hour courtesy of living out in the butt-fucks, but
finally after many stops we finally arrived at the high school. We then of
course had to wait for the other busses to arrive then magically the doors
finally opened and we were allowed to go torture ourselves for the next six
hours yippee!

By the way in case you have all forgotten this experience let me be the
first to give you a refresher. The first day of arriving at school is total
hell. I had no idea where I was going. Desperately I pulled my schedule out
of my backpack

"Room 114" I muttered `well where in the name of Lindsey Lohans
giant crab cooch is that?' I thought

By chance I glanced up noticing someone had put large multicolored signs
with arrows pointing to which way the rooms were. Following the crowd I
finally found the sign I was looking for

"101-133" the bright green sign read

"Finally" I sighed, turning down that hall and rushed down the
corridor stopping at 114 I poked his head inside and made my way in and
took a seat in the front.

The noise in the hall slowly started to dim as people started
making their way in, most of them in groups much to my annoyance. I sat and
watched the clock turn as most of the seats filled up and finally a teacher
walked in. He was an older man probably in his fifties but he appeared to
be fit wearing a simple black suit with a red shirt and black tie.

` "Good morning I'm Mr. Blackwell I teach sophomore and senior English but
for you lucky students, this year I will be your homeroom teacher!" he
announced to the class

He handed out papers to the students in the front rows

"Pass them back to your classmates... very good" he said waiting
for everyone to finish then continued

"If you get detention you will serve them with me after school, I
am responsible for taking attendance every morning so make sure you are
here in this room when the bell rings. For the twenty minutes you are here
you may eat, talk quietly but not on your phones. Do your homework from the
night before..."

A couple kids chuckled at his last comment

"But most importantly if you need anything please feel free to talk
to me, I know the guidance counselors are also here for you, but if you
need advice or have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me... let's
begin!"

	"Adams"

	"Here" A girl said

	"Avery"

I glanced around the room looking at my classmates for the first
time since last year when out of the corner of his eye I saw someone I
didn't recognize

	"Farrell"

I snapped my head back around

"Here" I said exhaling before turning once again back to look at
this person

	"Holliday"

"Here" the stranger in the back replied causing many heads to turn
in his direction

"I see by this roster that you are a transfer student, would you
like to introduce yourself?" Mr. Blackwell asked

	"Not really" he said

	"Shall I?" Mr. Blackwell asked

"If you must" the boy sighed

"Virgilian Octavian Holiday is a transfer stu..."

"Ian, my name is Ian Holiday I'm a transfer student from Duke, I
play football, basketball, soccer, baseball and I swim."

"Welcome Ian" Mr. Blackwell said the continuing with the names

Ian had shorter red hair with a mix of brown blended in and was
wearing a tight white tee shirt and baggy jeans, from the shirt let nothing
to chance, this boy was ripped and all of the girls were staring at
him. His arms had rippling biceps and you could almost make out his six
pack abs from under his shirt, even the guys in the room started
staring. His eyes were a staggering bright blue which from his dark
coloring appeared even lighter making his eyes breathtaking.

It was like the universe had shifted and no longer did the earth
rotate around the sun but everyone suddenly started revolving around this
boy Ian who noticing the stares let out a shy smile showing off his perfect
teeth. Causing a couple of the girls to let out a soft

	`Awww'

`Fuck fuck fuckity fuck' I cringed

All through middle school, and the greater part of High School I
had to deal with Corey Vancil who was in my opinion the biggest asshole on
the planet. He existed to make my life hell, he was beautiful, popular and
smart he was a great sports player and his dad was crazy rich he had
everything. I was envious I'll admit but all it took was for him to join my
swim team... Now it looks like Corey has some competition for most popular
asshole award I'm sure this `Ian' is a real charmer.

I turned back his head and stared resolutely to the front. The morning
announcements started announcing Birchmont's swim team tryouts after school
in a few weeks which caught my full attention. The bell finally rang and
picked up my bag off the floor

"Hi I'm Ian" I heard a voice next to my head I turned around
quickly to see Ian's face next to mine. `He's tall' I thought to myself

He threw out a charming smile that caused my breath to hitch in my throat

"Could you help me find my first class?" he asked me "I don't know
my way around"

"I...I..." God damnit voice get your ass in gear `hey brain stop
fantasizing we have work to do'

"I'm probably going to be just as lost as you I've never been down
this wing of the school either" I said

"I didn't catch your name" Ian asked me

	"I'm..."

"Hey Ian!" a voice shouted from the door

I looked up to find none other than Corey Vancil walking into the room

Corey walked right up to us and Corey gave me a shove pushing me back into
my vacated desk.

"you want to stay away from this faggot" Corey said looking right
at me then looking up and giving Ian a smile "This is the cocksucker I told
you about who used to be on the swim team, the one trying to do guys in the
locker room"

Ian just looked a little flabbergasted and then gave me a look that I will
never forget

"You keep your little faggot ass away from us if you know what's
good for you" Corey leaned down and whispered in my ear before grabbing
Ian's shoulder and they walked out of the room.

I hurtled out of the seat and rushed off to find my first class.
