Chapter 15: Jay Arrives

Mr. Driscoll came back only a few moments later closing the door
and sitting down at his desk. He leaned back in his chair and put his feet
up on his desk leaning back. I could see his rippling abs through his shirt
and despite his age Mr. Driscoll was in excellent shape.
"I must say it's been years since I've felt someone's eyes on me
like that, especially someone so young" he turned to me and smiled putting
his feet down. "I'm flattered for sure, but I'm not about that so keep your
head on straight or I'll put it on straight for you... got it?"
	I gulped
	"Got it"
"Good... now what is it that I am supposed to be helping you study
for?" he asked me
"My possible freshman year college coursework?" I asked
"Why didn't you just take the diploma?" Tim asked me "I'm sure your
grades were good enough for that?"
"They were, but I sort of need the scholarships" I said
"And you thought spending four and a half hours a day with me would
be easier?" Tim asked and I nodded
"HAHAHAHAHAAAA!" he laughed holding his sides wiping a tear forming
in his eye "ho... hold on..." he laughed harder "you thought... Oh this is
priceless..."
	"What's so funny I asked?"
	Tim suddenly became serious
"If you thought for one second being my personal study machine was
going to be easy... you were woefully mistaken... by the end of the year
you'll probably be ready for graduate school" he said seriously
I gulped then noticed my throat had gone dry
Tim reached into his desk and removed several sheets of paper and
then walked into the classroom closet and pulled out about thirteen
different books. He sat all the books down on the desk and then pulled out
his cell phone. He typed a few things into his blackberry.
"These are your new books. You have three days per book and on the
fourth day I expect a three thousand word summary, synopsis and then your
own personal feelings about each book. Essentially `Your likes, dislikes,
and overall emotional response to the story'" He said
Just then the door opened and Mr. Blackwell came in.
"Ahh the elusive Mr. Farrell" Mr. Blackwell said giving me a
smile. "These are the papers you asked for" Mr. Blackwell said handing the
papers to Mr. Driscoll but Tim held his hand up then pointed to me
"For him?" Mr. Blackwell asked and Tim nodded
"Well well...it's been years... but here you go" Mr. Blackwell
handed me a small stack of papers
I looked down and realized that the papers he was holding for me
were concise science notes for biology, environmental science and
chemistry.
"I minored in science at BU and developed a basic crash course in
science for my kids" Mr. Blackwell said giving me a small smile
"And I minored in math" Mr. Driscoll said handing me his own set of
papers. I looked them both over and I was amazed to me reading some of the
most clear and concise notes I have ever read. It broke everything down
into steps so as long as you followed the directions directly it was
probably better than any textbook I had ever seen.
"These are amazing" I said giving them both a smile "why don't you
use these?" I asked
"We have to directly follow the state guided curriculum, but in
certain select cases we're allowed" Mr. Blackwell said giving a grimace. I
noted it was shared with Mr. Driscoll
"We're going to make it so you'll be fully prepared for college"
Mr. Driscoll said giving me a small smile "that way you can focus on
your... Certain other things" he finished giving me a wink.
I looked at Mr. Blackwell and he gave me the same wink and then it
dawned on me. Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Driscoll were standing shoulder to
shoulder and seemed very close, the way they looked at one another and how
they had this grand plan...
	I couldn't help it but I gasped
"There he's got it!" Tim smiled "told you he would!"
	"Yea yea" Mr. Blackwell smiled
"Hey Dustin you got to get going" Tim said pointing to the clock
showing I only had about 15 minutes before practice.
I got up quickly and gave Tim a huge smile
"Thanks so much Tim I can't wait to get started, you too
Mr. Blackwell" I said
"The name is James" Mr. Blackwell said
"James" I nodded and rushed out the door.
I wasn't really in any rush to get to swim practice as I couldn't
even swim yet, I figured I could put my face in and maybe call my dad and
duck out early. I got to the locker room and pushed my way inside. I was
shocked as it looked like all of the swim team was collectively waiting for
me. All the guys were in their suits and they were all just looking at me
and I felt a cold chill run down my spine. I looked first to Ian whose face
remained blank and then I looked to Colin who had a small smile and as my
eyes locked onto Colin's he walked towards me.
Colin stood between me and the team and he stopped and rubbed his
head nervously
"Hey Dustin the guys here kinda elected me to be their spokesman"
Colin said and I felt my heart leap into my chest as I expected them to
veto me off the team. Colin continued speaking
"We're a team" he said "you, me, everyone... and the only way we're
going to win is if we act like it, that means... fuck... you
know... shit... you're one of us alright. Someone hurts you, they hurt
us... someone wants to hurt you... they go through us... we're with you."
Colin finished and in a very uncharacteristic display stepped forward and
gave me a hug.
The team then surrounded us and gave me pats on the back of
approval and smiles and a tidal wave of words of encouragement as I found
myself ushered with the crowd out to the pool area.
Coach Clarke didn't even bat an eye as we stormed the pool area
en-force and simply gave me a small nod as he began practice and I moved to
sit on the bench at poolside. Several members of the team between sets
would come and give me a high five which cheered me up and it didn't seem
to take any time before the practice was over.
I watched the team finish their last sets and a few guys stayed
back to say hi to me. I noticed Ian walk into the locker room without
sparing me a glance. Colin seemed to notice it too.
"I thought you guys were beginning to get along..." Colin said
"what the fuck happened?"
	"Nothing happened" I whispered back
	"Bullshit" he hissed back
"Amanda happened..." I said under my breath and Colin's eyes
widened in realization
"Oh that sucks" he said "what a prick"
I happened to agree but I just let the comment go and excused
myself. Coach Clarke caught me as I was leaving and I promised I would be
good as new by next week.
I went home feeling elated that for the first time I really felt
liked I belonged at school and I really had the team to thank for that. I
really couldn't wait to get swimming again. But at the same time my heart
ached over Ian and I really didn't know where to even begin when it came to
thinking about him.
I was actually proud of myself because I was able to think about
our time together objectively. I could easily hate him for being with
Amanda but being gay is complicated and I realize that he doesn't
understand his own feeling very well. He needed more time and then although
it hurt to do so, I would give him all the time he needed to sort things
out for himself even if it cost us our friendship... but I really hope it
didn't come to that. I really really hoped at any rate.
The rest of the week was a blur. A psychopathic blur, Tim Driscoll
and James Blackwell were sadists and were out to kill me. My homework
quintupled and I found myself reading at almost all times. The workload was
enormous but extremely satisfying and I found myself absorbing as much as
my brain could take in. I had finished my algebra section and moved on to
geometry and chemistry.
I found myself spending a lot of my time in the library and I
spent my lunches there as well. I still wasn't too comfortable inside the
cafeteria and it was nice and quiet in the library. I sat in one of the
tables in the furthest corner of the room way in the back near the computer
lab. It was finally Friday and it was lunchtime and I had another period
after this one to continue my work in the library, and I had my mountain of
desk sprawl around me and was absorbed what I was doing. I felt someone's
eyes on me.
You know that feeling when someone is looking at you and you feel
that chill down your spine. I had that feeling times a thousand and a cold
chill spread through my body and it was that same feeling I had felt
several times before.
The chill was saying something to me as if someone was speaking a
thought directly into my brain
	`You are being watched'
I darted my head around as to find the source but I was unable to
find it, the only other person sitting anywhere near me was some kid I
didn't know.
The chill intensified and I looked towards him and although he
wasn't looking anywhere near me, as a matter of fact he wasn't really
facing me but I felt his eyes on me as if he were staring at me. It was as
if I could even see his face and it was a weird sensation like he was
looking at me and at the same time he wasn't. I couldn't see his eyes but
something in the back of my mind was screaming
	`HIM HIM HIM!'
As if hearing me he turned his head towards me and gave me a
smile. He had very wavy black hair like Josh Groban and a pointy face like
Orlando Bloom. He was certainly good looking; he had the beginnings of a
goatee and had to be a junior or senior. His smile accented his pearly
white teeth. He stood and walked over to my table bringing his book with
him
"Mind if I sit with you?" he asked me throwing me a kind smile
"Can I help you?" I asked him a little more rudely than I meant to
"Sorry it was just that you were sitting by yourself I was
wondering if you wanted some company... I guess not I'll just be going
then..." he turned to leave
"Wait!" I suddenly exclaimed "I'm sorry I just don't know who you
are" I said
"My name is Jay Petrie, Jay is short for Jackson" he said holding
out his hand which I took and shook it.
"Hi Jay, I'm..." but Jay interrupted me
"Dustin Farrell" he answered for me
"How do you know who I am?" I asked
"I read the papers" he smiled at me and I leaned over and I pulled
out the chair next to me for him and he gracefully glided into the chair
and put his book on the table.
"So what grade are you in?" I asked him
"I'm a senior like you, sort of, and my brother is a sophomore." he
answered with a knowing smile
"Do I know him?" I asked
"Sure you do, his name is Daniel Petrie he's on the swim team with
you" Jay said and I thought about it and there was indeed a Daniel Petrie
on the team but I really didn't know him at all.
"What brings you to the library?" I asked him
"You're not the only person to suffer the Driscoll treatment you
know" he smiled pointing to the mountain of books and papers around me "I'd
recognize that sprawl anywhere"
"Oh you're suffering this wrath too?" I asked and Jay just smiled
	"Yup"
"Any pointers for survival?" I asked
Jay laughed softly and leaned in and gave me a smile
	"Remember to sleep... it helps"
At that moment as he was leaning in I realized how handsome he
really was and I felt a pull towards him like an attraction. I realized he
was charismatic and something else that I could only describe
as... debonair.
I was still feeling that strange chill inside me and it was trying
to tell me something. It was like I was being forced into something. Then I
realized that it was telling me that Jay was making me lean into him
somehow so I instantly sprang away. When I did Jay smiled even wider.
"We also have something else in common" he whispered leaning in and
I looked up into his eyes in surprise and was caught in his gaze. His eyes
were a rich sea of green, a color I had never seen before.
"And what is that?" I asked him softly
"We like the same things" he said leaning back to look at me. I
felt something stir inside me and he smirked in knowing "well I best start
reading my book before Tim kills me" and with that Jay began working and I
took that as my cue to do the same. We worked in comfortable silence till
the end of the period and I watched Jay as he packed up his things to leave
"I'll see you around Raven" Jay said leaving me
"Yea you too" I said watching him go
It took me a short while after he left to realize he had called me
Raven and I had not mentioned it to him.
