Chapter 16: Jackson Petrie

I thought about Jay Petrie all the way until the end of school. The
kid seemed like a total mystery to me. There was something funny about him
and although that left me feeling uneasy I liked him and he seemed really
nice. His black curly hair and that handsome face... well I finally had
something to distract me from Ian... At least for a short while
After school I skipped my swim practice and my dad drove me down to
UMASS Medical to see Dr. Willis for my one week checkup. I was nervous the
entire time because I really wanted to start swimming again.
We got to the outpatient services area and we were directed into a
small office and after an extremely long wait Dr. Willis came in with a big
smile.
"Sorry to keep you waiting" he said "this should be quicker than
the wait I promise" he set right to work
"Dustin I am going to need you to take off your pants and your
shirt, I'll throw this privacy curtain up for you" he said sliding the
curtain around us. My dad stepped behind the curtain leaving me with the
doctor.
I took off my clothes feeling very vulnerable with the doctor
"Alright then let's do this quickly, lean over the side of the bed
here" he said
I walked over the bed and leaned down. I felt his hand probing
around my rectum and I instantly felt myself growing hard much to my
shame. The doctor slipped a finger inside and I felt him stretching me and
pulling me apart.
"No scaring that I can see... that's a little strange... how does
that feel... any stinging or pain?"
"No, it feels good... I MEAN FINE!" I blurted out feeling my face
get real hot
"That's a good sign" he said taking his hand away. I heard him
take off his gloves and he put his cool hands on my back
"Bruising is way down... How do you feel?" he asked
"Good" I sighed as his hands massaged my back
"Okay now let's check your ribs now... lay on your back on the bed
here" he said
I moved to turn onto my back and exposed my hard cock in front of
the doctor and my face burned in shame.
As if recognizing my embarrassment Dr. Willis grabbed a gurney out
of a drawer and wrapped it over my lap on the bed covering me up.
"I'm not too worried about that... that seems to be working just
fine" he said giving me a wink and my face managed to burn even hotter
	"Any pain?" he asked
"No" I said as I felt his hands on my side
	"None?" he asked
I didn't feel any pain at all
	"No" I said
"That's good, it's sealed over... you're good to go swimming, your
muscles are going to be sore... Take it easy at first but I think you're
going to be just fine" he said "now get dressed"
I started putting on my clothes and managed to at least get my
pants on before I suddenly remembered something.
"I've been feeling these weird chills inside me, and sometimes it
feels like there are people watching me or funny things seem to be
happening." I said
"Doesn't sound like a medical condition" he said "but if it
persists or worsens by all means come back... but otherwise how's school
going?" he asked me
"Good... it's a lot different now" I said
	"How so?" he asked
"I'm not as afraid of getting jumped again" I said giving him a
small smile as I threw on my shirt
"Well that's something at least" he gave me a smile back and opened
the curtains revealing my dad
"He's fine... as I am sure you heard" Dr. Willis said to my dad
"Yeah, I hope my randy son didn't embarrass you" My dad said making
me blush
"Yeah... don't worry he's got nothing to be ashamed of" Dr. Willis
said referring to my size
My dad smiled at me and I just wanted to crawl under the bed and
die
"He's good to swim, but he has to take it easy and avoid ANYTHING
that might upset that rib again... so no more brawls"
"I'm all over that" I said
"Good..." Dr. Willis said giving me a look over "well I guess this
is goodbye... hopefully I'll never see you again and I mean that in a good
way you hear?"
"Yes sir!" I said and I walked over and I gave him a hug which he
returned
"He's one of the lucky ones... keep him safe" Dr. Willis said to my
dad as he shook his hand
	"I will"
I rode home all smiles thankful that I was going to start swimming
again and life was returning to normal... somewhat.
My weekend was a tense affair as I worked most of it trying to get
my school work done but I also convinced my dad to bring me to school so I
could use the pool to practice in even though I didn't have practice till
Monday afternoon. After much begging he finally allowed me to go and I got
into the water for the first time in weeks.
I was rusty, but it felt good to be at it again, and per the
doctors request I did take it easy and didn't push myself too hard and if
anything it only made me more excited for school on Monday.
Sunday night I had trouble sleeping and I went off the back deck to
my favorite rock and looked up into the night sky. The moon was a thin
silver crescent. I gazed up into the stars and let my mind go blank. The
first thought I had was oddly to Jay Petrie and his handsome dark looks and
his piercing gaze at me in the library. He was an enigma to me but I just
wanted to know more about him, if I didn't see him in the library again I
could always look out for his brother at swim practice.
I also let my mind wander to Ian and how we had such a rough
beginning. Was it really worth it? To try and pursue something with him
knowing it may never work out? My heart still ached for him and I wished I
could somehow make his decision easier, what was really odd was at that
moment I was so angry with him but all I really wanted was for him to be
happy.
God I was so stupid, I am such a sap!
I got up and looked out onto the water and closed my eyes for a
moment
"Please let everything work out" I whispered
I went inside and finally managed to fall asleep.
I awoke the sounds of my alarm going off and I groggily pulled
myself out of bed and got dressed for school. I thankfully remembered my
trunks for swim and got myself out the door and towards the bus.
I was on autopilot until I got to Mr. Driscoll's room and set my
stuff down.
"How was your first assignment?" he asked me handing me a cup of
coffee
"Oh god you're a life saver" I said taking the proffered cup and
holding it near my face as I enjoyed both its aroma and its
warmth. "And...it's in my bag"
"Well I figured you'd have a hard time learning if you weren't
awake" Tim said throwing me a smile
I watched the class filter in and begin to take their seats. I
remembered Jay telling me about having a class with Tim so I thought I'd
ask him about it.
	"Hey Mr. Driscoll" I said
"Yes Mr. Farrell?" he asked back
"Do you know Jay Petrie?" I asked
Tim turned and looked at me funny for a moment and gave a wry grin
"Ran into Jackson, have you?" his smirk grew wider "so what do you
think?"
"That's kind of what I was asking you" I said back
"In short" Tim tried gesticulating with his hands because words
failed him "a savant... he's gifted and I can't really explain his reading
speed is at an alarming rate and his memory retention is as far as I can
tell perfect"
"He seems a little odd" I said
"He's not normal in the sense that you're not the same as a room
full of apes." Tim smiled
"Then what is he doing here?" I asked
"Wasting time" Tim said "as far as I can tell... it's like he's
waiting for something. He could go to any college he wants, pursue any
career but he wants nothing more than to sit in the library and study the
days away."
	"Speaking of which" I smiled
"Give me that paper" I rummaged through my bag "and finish that
coffee"
I drained the cup and handed him the mug
"Good now get out of here so I can teach these apes" he smiled at
me and I nodded and grabbed my stuff and walked to my corner table in the
library.
I was a little miffed when I saw someone sitting at it but then I
realized it was Jay sitting there so I walked over to him
"Mind if I sit?" I asked him
"It's why I am here" he gave me a smile
I set my things down and began making my organized pile of chaos
"How was your weekend?" he asked me not looking up from his papers
"Good, I got cleared by the doctor to begin swimming again" I said
"From the incident earlier this year, right?" Jay asked
"Yea" I said not mentioning it further
"People are instinctively reactive and generally very dense about
it. I would try and say it wasn't your fault, but can only assume there
were other incidents leading to that one in a pattern that could have been
avoided." He said this time glancing up to look me in the eyes as if
wanting to see my reaction.
"I already deducted that I was partly responsible for what happened
to me" I said honestly
Jay stared at me as if trying to detect the truth to the statement
and finally relented and looked back to his paper
"Well I guess you're not a complete loss then" he said
"How did you know about my nickname?" I asked him
"I heard a couple of guys calling you that at lunch" he said
looking back up "I thought it suited"
	"Thanks"
"Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over
many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore" Jay said pointing to
the piles of papers in front of me.
	"What's that a quote from?" I asked
	Jay smiled
"Edgar Allen Poe" he said smiling wide this time "be sure to ask
Tim about it"
With that I knew that conversation was over and I was sure to ask
Tim about that poem
We worked in silence for a long time and finally Jay broke the
silence
"What do you like to read... and I mean in a recreational sense?"
he asked me looking up again
"I don't know really, I like a lot of things... Dumas, Lord of the
Rings, Harry Potter, Wheel of Time, a bunch of things really" I answered
"Don't tell me you believe in magic?" he asked me
"Well I'll ask a question back, do you not think that things we
cannot explain are in some way magical?" I replied
"That's a good answer" he smiled "definitely a lot better than your
peers, I can see why Tim likes you. You have a good head on your shoulders,
use it... but I think it's time to use our stomachs. Do you mind sitting
with me in the cafeteria today? I need a change of scenery."
I nodded and we stood up leaving our work on the table figuring it
wouldn't be bothered and we walked into the café just as the bell was
ringing. We were first in line and I watched Jay buy himself some fruit and
a salad. I opted for the meal which was a hamburger and fries.
We sat at my old table and watched the crowds of people walk into
the café.
"Are you a vegetarian?" I asked Jay
"No, I just don't trust the meat here" he said taking a bite out of
his salad
	"Why's that?" I asked
"It smells funny, you're going to be sick later" he said to me
after I had taken my fist bite. The burger tasted fine to me so I kept
eating.
We ate in silence for a few minutes and I was a little surprised
when Colin and another kid I didn't know came to sit at our table.
	"Colin" I said
"Mind if we join you?" Colin asked us
"Sure I said" and Colin and the kid sat down
"Who's your friend?" I asked Colin
"Dan" the kid said looking up at me "I'm on the team with you"
I was a little surprised because Jay had black hair and startling
green eyes. Dan had short brown hair and blue eyes. Jay had a refined and
sharp face. Dan's was fuller and was also a lot taller and bigger than
Jay. If they were brother's I couldn't see how they were related
	"Your brother?" I asked Jay
	Jay nodded
"Yeah that's my bro" Dan said
I looked between the two of them and I couldn't help it I just
blurted out
	"Which one is adopted?"
Dan stopped eating and even Colin just stared at me in my
incredible display of rudeness
"I'm sorry that was rude of me" I said
"I am" Jay said and continued eating as if I was just asking about
the weather
Both Colin and Dan gave me funny looks but I just looked down at my
plate ashamed I had just be such an idiot
"i see Ian's sitting at the retard table" Colin said directing my
attention to Ian who was sitting with some of his fellow Football jocks and
had his arm noticeably around Amanda. "I thought he was going to..." Colin
looked at me for a moment then back to Ian
"He chose her" I answered the unasked question
"That stupid motherfucker" Colin almost shouted then realizing he
quieted down "I still can't believe he chose that thing to you?"
	I smiled
	"Yep"
"Only an idiot would be dumb enough to let you go" Jay said looking
up at me and gave me a weak smile which I returned
	"Aye" Colin agreed
	"Thanks guys" I said
"You know we could have a little `talk' with him right?" Dan said
and Colin and Jay seemed to rapidly agree
"Guys!" I said "thanks... but this is something I want him to work
out for himself"
They seemed to take time to think about that as we ate in silence
for the rest of the time till the bell rang and we each said our goodbyes
and I started walking towards the library myself
"You're not going to wait for me?" I heard Jay walking up behind me
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to be an idiot, I don't know why I asked
I..." Jay silenced me by placing his hand under my chin and pulled my head
up to look him in the eyes
"Calm down" he commanded and I felt a strange warmth spread through
me from the point where he hand was touching me and I felt myself get
calmer and my shoulders slumped
	"Thanks" I said
"Better, let's get back to work and soon you'll stop worrying about
this alright?" Jay let go of my chin and the feeling disappeared and a
strange chill spread through me as we headed back to the library and
moments later things fell back to normal.
