Chapter 22: Que sera sera

Three weeks after the Halloween dance I managed to fall into some
semblance of normality. Jay and I studied our asses off in the library as
Tim's tests were fast approaching. He had me reading so much it felt like
my head was going to explode most days. Jay was a godsend and seemed to
know just what I needed and always had aspirin or coffee handy, sometimes
both.

Ian seemed to be keeping his distance and besides seeing him in
homeroom and in English he always seemed scarce and never came to speak to
me and my heart ached because of it. Jay also seemed to be aware of Ian and
instead of pushing me away from Ian like I would expect him to, he seemed
to be trying to push us together.

"You talk to Ian yet?" Jay asked me looking up from his assignment

We were sitting in the library during lunch as we always seemed to
be doing nowadays.

"No" I answered not taking my eyes off my paper

	"Why not?" he asked

I finally looked up and sighed turning my eyes to Jay's green orbs.

"He doesn't want to talk to me, so I won't talk to him" I said

"I thought you liked him" he smirked

"In the romantic sense, so why aren't you jealous?" I asked

	Jay just shrugged

	"I don't do jealous, I'm pretty confident you're mine and besides I
can tell that leaving this whole mess unresolved is making you sad." He
said
"I just want you to be happy, what is that old French expression
`que sera, sera'?"

"What will be, will be?" I asked

	"That's the one!" Jay smiled

I smiled back as I thought he was joking around

"But seriously" he said "nobody can see the future, but I know I
care about you greatly and no matter what I will continue to do so always,
so jealously doesn't fit in my heart."

The emotion and logic behind those words were strong. Jay had
obviously put a lot of thought behind them.

	"Thanks" I said

"Well I was just warming you up, Ian's sitting right behind you
looking like he's wanted to speak to you for the past ten minutes" Jay said
nodding to a point behind me and whipped around in my seat only to see Ian
sitting at a table about twenty feet from us. Ian looked up when I spun
around.

"Go get em tiger!" Jay smiled and I sighed and got up from my seat
and walked over to where Ian was sitting pretending to read his math text

"Mind if I sit here?" I asked and Ian looked up pretending to just
notice me

	"Sure, I guess" he said

I sat down and looked across the table at Ian and despite all my
feelings for Jay it appeared my feelings for Ian had not gone anywhere as
he was just as beautiful as I remembered. I thought about all the time we
had spent together and all the things that kept pushing us together and all
the things keeping us apart. It was like we were locked in a perfect
balance never getting closer but not getting further apart either.

"Ian, are you alright?" I asked

Ian seemed to be at a loss of words.

	"Yea..." he muttered

"It's been weeks and you haven't even spoken to me" I sighed "I
miss you"

"I miss you too Dustin" he looked down at the table "I didn't thank
you for what you did for me at the dance"

"Shouting to everyone that you're straight was easy enough when
it's true, or at least mostly true" I said giving him a wry smile.

Ian didn't return my glance as he seemed somewhat ashamed

"Ian I didn't realize how much of a struggle you'd have with this."
I said "please look at me" Ian looked up at me and gazed into my eyes

"Ian... I've never been very religious but I know you have. I'm not
going to debate theology with you there's no point. I came to a point in my
life where I couldn't deny myself that this was what I am no matter how
much I wished it otherwise. I can't undo being gay. I did a lot of soul
searching and finally after everything with Corey I decided to just say
`screw it' and not hide it anymore and you know something?"

	"What?" Ian asked

"I'm okay" I said "there's a bunch of places in the bible that says
being gay is wrong but I know Jesus never said that, I can only hope and
pray since he has made me that he created me this way for a reason and
wants me to be happy." I finished

	Ian just nodded

"I don't have the answers for you, but if you need someone to talk
to or a shoulder or anything... Ian... I... I love you still alright?" I
said... "So please... can we be friends again please?"

Ian nodded holding back some emotion inside

I looked around the library noticing there wasn't anybody in there
besides us because it was still lunch. So I got up from the table and
walked next to Ian and knelt down and wrapped him up in a tight hug. His
arms wrapped around me and I have to admit it felt pretty damn good.

"Thanks" he said against my shoulder

"You're welcome" I said pulling away

	The bell rang

"I gotta get back to work" I said pointing back to my table

	"Me too" he said

"I'll see you around alright?" I asked

	"At practice today" he smiled

	"Good"

We went our separate ways and I sat back down at the table

"How much of that did you hear?" I asked Jay who was smiling

"All of it" he smirked back

"I hate you" I frowned joking around

	"No you don't" he pouted

"You're right, but man I should... that was emotionally draining,
you know? I should be trying to get over him not trying to balance him back
into my life." I said

"So you'd rather be miserable" he said back to me

"But it's so awkward" I said

"Only because you want it to be, remember me saying that feelings
don't go away?" he asked

I nodded my head remember that car ride

"So you're still sexually attracted to him... BIG DEAL, I'm sure
there are many more guys here that'd make you pop raging boners... SO WHAT!
You think that Ian Holiday is going to turn me into a raging angry jealous
boyfriend... HE'S NOT... so get over it!" Jay snapped and it was the first
time I had even seen him remotely angry.

"Jay I'm sorry... I..." Jay put his hand up

"Rave I'm not upset at you... but you're smarter than this! You're
just beating yourself up, don't you get it? I love you and I'm not going
anywhere so don't let Ian get you down alright?" he asked

	I nodded

"Good, let's go visit Tim so we can get this day over with" he
smiled packing away his books

Jay and I spent the rest of our day taking Tim's ridiculously long
tests. I had just finished my last essay as the last bell was ringing

"Pencils down" Tim laughed coming over to us snatching up our tests
and gave them a glance over.

"Looks fine at a glance, I'll give you a final grade tomorrow" Tim
said "any questions?"

	"No" we both replied

"well come down here during lunch tomorrow I want to do a review
with you and go over some of the new material just to make sure you
understand it." Tim said as we got up

"You got it boss" Jay smiled as we walked out the door

"I'll meet you after practice" I said to Jay who turned and gave me
a soft kiss on the cheek

"You better" he smiled turning towards the parking lot.

I made my way up to the locker room so I could get changed for
practice. As I entered the locker room I noticed Colin and Dan getting
changed

"Hey Rave" Colin said as I entered put my bag into my locker

"Hey Colin, Dan" I greeted cheerily

"Hope my brother is taking good care of you" Dan smirked

Truthfully Jay and I hadn't gone any further than what we had done
on my post swim meet party. We had gotten together and had both sucked and
jerked each other off but never anything more.

"Oh he his... I require `special' care" I emphasized special

"Yea you're really fucking special alright" Colin said

	"Thanks" I said

"Sure sure" Colin waved me off "so where's your second
boyfriend... he's running late"

	He meant Ian

"He's not my boyfriend, and I don't know where Ian is thank you"

"Testy aren't we" Colin smirked striding over to me naked I
couldn't help but glance down for a sec I noticed him waving his hand next
to his hip. I realized he did that to distract me so I would look down.

"Eyes up here sweetheart" Colin said snapping his fingers

"You did that on purpose asshole!" I said giving him a light shove

"You love it!" Colin said bending over the bench exposing his ass
spreading his cheeks wide

"Fuck you!" I slapped his ass as hard as I could and Colin jogged
high stepping in a circle holding his butt

"Yikes!" he shouted causing a couple of the guys to laugh

At that moment Ian walked into the locker room.

"I miss anything?" Ian asked me as he unloaded his stuff into his
locker

"Just Colin being an idiot" I said giving Colin a glare as he gave
me and Ian silent kissy faces.

I got changed into my suit and got to the pool area and decided to
give myself a couple of warm up laps. I jumped in and got a few good laps
in clearing my mind. I heard the guys coming in so I got myself out of the
water and sat at the edge of the pool waiting for Coach Clarke to show up.

Coach came in only a moment later whistle in hand.

"OK GUYS LISTEN UP!" he shouted getting our attention "Next week is
our final practice before our meet. I know some of you guys are also on the
football team so I promise to have you all home at a reasonable hour so you
can get rested for the big Thanksgiving Day game the day after."

He went over the bus schedule and I began to tune his speech out
as I had read the swim bulletin earlier so I knew all this information. He
finally finished his speech and we got into the swing of practice.

We started running drills and speed trials. I had gotten distracted
by my own work and I came out of my reverie as Coach Clarke yelled

"Much better Holiday! I hope you can get it all together by next
time." I looked over at Ian who was as Coach had yelled looking much better
in his form. I smiled to myself for a minor victory.

We swam for the next hour when Coach called for us to wrap it up. I
decided to stay behind and do a few extra cool down laps. What can I say
I'm a fish and I love the water. I was the only one left besides Colin who
seemed to take an interest in one of the diving boards and was making a
ruckus on the other side of the pool.

	"HEY RAVE!" I heard

I pushed my head out of the water to see Colin on the diving board.

	"WATCH THIS!"

It seemed like time had slowed to a crawl as I watched Colin dash
down the board and leap into the air. Time slowed even further as he sprang
and leaped into the air and bounced pushing himself into back flip. I
watched in horror as his felt foot slipped as he jumped and he began to
tumble, his momentum propelled him into a backwards summersault but he no
longer had enough forward movement to clear the board.

Colin's head crashed into the diving board with a sickening crack
and I watched his neck bend at an awful angle and watched helplessly as his
body fell into the water like a rag doll.

I felt myself rushing forward swimming as if my body was on
fire. My heart was on fire as I rushed through the water swimming under
lane after lane. In the water I saw his body slowly sinking. I dove down
and opened my eyes in the water.

Through the haze Colin looked like a fallen angel as he drifted
slowly down. His golden blonde hair flowed around his head like a halo. I
wrapped my arms around him and pulled him upwards. I felt the air rush
around my head as I broke the surface of the water and I was shocked to see
Jay and Ian standing at the side of the pool.

"HELP ME!" I cried and Ian dashed into the pool and he helped me
pull Colin to the side of the pool. Jay reached down and with his and Ian's
help we managed to get Colin out of the water.

"Ian go get help!" Jay shouted and I watched Ian dash out of the
pool area and into the locker room.

I was kneeling over Colin and I could tell he wasn't breathing the
worst of it was his head was at a sickening angle and at that moment I
realized I should not have tried to get him out of the water and I felt
myself getting nauseous.

Jay instantly jumped into action and knelt down and turned Colin's
head back and I head a few bones snap as he did so and I gasped.

	Jay looked up at me

"Dustin, hold his head still!" Jay shouted and knelt beside Colin
and put my hands on his neck. Jay shimmied beside Colin and placed both his
hands over his heart.

As if nodding to himself he then went over to Colin's head and
placed his hands around his neck and closed his eyes as if concentrating
deeply. I was holding onto Colin's neck and I was shocked as I felt a funny
warmth traveling down my arms, it felt like warm sunlight and I was then
shocked as I felt a familiar chill spread through me and it began to mix
with the warmth in my arms.

I closed my eyes and in my mind I could see the bones in Colin's
neck mend and align back together and I could see tendrils of light
spreading around his injured parts. I could feel the light as if it were a
part of me like an extra limb or a hand just beyond the reach of my
fingers. I opened my eyes and when I looked down, for a second I thought I
saw a strange glow coming from my hands. But when I blinked it was
gone. Jay then leaned in and tilted Colin's head back. He plugged Colin's
nose and began CPR.

On his third breath Colin's body spazmed and Jay turned Colin on
his side. Colin heaved and started coughing. I watched as water poured out
of his mouth and Jay gently started patting him on his back.

"He's going to be alright" Jay said to me and Colin rolled over
onto his back. He looked at the two of us wide eyed and his chest was still
heaving as his heart raced.

"You... you..." Colin said trying to reach up to Jay.

"Dustin" I heard Jackson say and I looked up and his eyes seemed to
be on fire.

"You should forget about this" he said holding out his hand.

I felt a tingle run down my spine and I glared back at him

"Well forget it, I'm not going to" I said

Jackson's face became unreadable and he took a deep breath in and
looked down at Colin.

"You're alright now" Jay said taking his hand and reached down to
brush some of the blonde wisps' of hair in Colin's face away. Colin seemed
to relax a bit and then suddenly the doors burst open and several people
came barging through.

I looked up and saw the principle and the nurse and a couple of
teachers come rushing through the locker room and the rushed over to
us. The nurse took one look at Colin and put her hand on her chest and gave
a sigh of relief

"Lay back down sweetheart" she said laying Colin back down and
began to check him over and after a few seconds

"Stay still" she instructed "the ambulance is on its way, your back
is broken you're lucky to be alive" she said and I looked to Jay and then
to Colin whose gaze was fixed on Jay

"What happened?" The principle said over the commotion

"Colin was diving and he slipped and he hit his head on the diving
board and went crashing into the water. I swam over to help him and Jay and
Ian came in and helped me get him out of the pool and Jay used CPR just
before you guys rushed in." I said

The crowd looked me over then to Jay

"That's how it happened" Jay said "I came in and Dustin was in the
water screaming for help. I helped get Colin up to the side here and
noticed he wasn't breathing so I performed CPR and revived him"

Nodding as if satisfied the nurse applied a neck brace around
Colin's head just as the Paramedics arrived, a few minutes later they had
Colin on a stretcher and had him on his way to the hospital.
