. . . . . .

400 years ago, mankind discovered that magic was hidden in their
blood. Powerful Mages, impressive shape shifters, agile and deadly Dark
Assassins. At first the world was afraid of them; fearing normal people
would be annihilated, a great war was started. Even though they had the
ability to destroy humans a Magic Counsel was created and peace was
offered. From that moment on Magical Beings or Magbei have been respected
and praised for their powers. Now people with these special abilities are
granted special places in society. Yet a great evil may put in danger this
balance. Only the sacrifice and teamwork of a small group can stop it.
. . . . . .

"Dylan!!" Ray said trying to wake up his still sleeping friend.

"Hey Dylan, are you planning on going to class today? You do know that
today is your final right?

Remember?? The exam you are supposed to take to see if you can become a
magician apprentice?

That snapped Dylan out of his sleep.

Is it possible that THAT test is today?? Dylan thought.

"That's today???" Asked a very panicked Dylan

Ray's only action was point out to Dylan's calendar right next to his
bed. Dylan had marked a big red circle on the today's date: March the
22nd. And in even bigger red letters: FINAL EXAM 9:00 am!!

Next thing Dylan saw was the clock. 8:30am.

That is NOT GOOD!!!!!

"NO WAY!!" said Dylan while jumping out of bed and straight to the
shower. Not before tripping into a box in his way. He face planted the
floor.

"You ok?" Dylan asked

"Who put that stupid box in the middle of the way???" Dylan asked while
rushing to the bathroom once again.

"Guilty as charged" said Ray while raising one hand in sign of guilt. "It's
some of your stuff that was in my apartment. I thought if you passed
today's important exam you may have to move to the academy."

Dylan stopped his bath for a second to think about that. Ray has been his
best friend for over 6 years now. They did almost everything together. Even
after discovering that Dylan was a Magbei. Heck they even stuck together
after he found out that Dylan was gay. So separating from him was not
something he was going to allow.

Dylan was so grateful that Ray was not some sort of homophobic guy. He was
actually pretty good with it. Of course after making sure Dylan would never
try to rape him in his sleep. Not that it wasn't such a bad idea. Ray was a
good looking guy. Standing 5 foot 9 and tanned skin and short spiky blond
hair. And those hazel eyes could melt you with one glance. But he was very
straight and Dylan respected that.

"First of all, I'm not sure I'll even past the test. Second of all who said
that we were going to go separate ways? I can always ask you as my
assistant. That is IF you want the job." Dylan said while he was getting
out of the shower

"Assistant?? An apprentice's assistant?? How does that work??" Clearly that
was the first time Ray had even heard of that position.

"It doesn't mean that you will carry my books or utensils. Though, the idea
is hysterical and very appealing." Dylan said right before he tripped again
trying to put on his pants. "Ouch, running late definitely doesn't help my
coordination!"

"Dude, stop falling down or you'll give yourself a head trauma!!" said Ray

"Anyway, like I was saying. One of the most important things for a mage and
even for a mage apprentice, is a trusted friend and confident. This one in
turn must learn to defend himself, that's why they train with the most
skillful assassins. Of course they must also past a great test but
considering that I have never beat you in hand to hand combat, you will
have no problem," said Dylan just as he finished changing.

Ray was silent for a moment, and that confused Dylan.

"Do you really think that is possible?" Ray asked with looking away from
Dylan and clearly shaken.

Dylan, almost ready, stopped and got closer to Ray.

"I'm positive about it. We have stuck together through many problems and
obstacles, most certainly we will not let something like this separate this
dynamic duo." Then he gave Ray a big hug.

"You are an awesome friend Dylan. Now go get ready you are already
late. You have to go." Said Ray, removing a small tear that had fallen from
his eye.

"I'M running late?? WE are running late!! You are coming with me!!!"

"Wait! Aren't these events only for family??" Ray asked confused.

"You are my family dummy. Remember I got nobody but you! They HAVE to let
you in hahaha!! Let's go I'm ready!!" Dylan said grabbing a small book bag
from his closet.

Needless to say, Ray was moved by Dylan's comment. He was really lucky to
have a friend like him. Dylan had no family because his parents died in an
accident many years ago. None of his parents were magical beings or the
accident could have avoided. He met Dylan a few years after the
accident. He was already independent. They met in a Martial arts
class. Both he and Dylan were very talented in hand to hand combat. They
both got very quickly to the first 2 places. Yet, Dylan had never been able
to beat Ray.

"So because we are in a real hurry we may need to use a portal." Dylan said
walking to towards the living room.

"I've never been in a portal before! " Ray said. Humans weren't really
allowed to ride on one unless they were invited by someone with magical
abilities, and Dylan never really used his abilities unless he really
needed to or in his training sessions in which Ray helped once in a
while. He trained mostly by himself.

Although he had the right for a tutor, he respectfully only asked for
scrolls. He wanted to learn on his own. It required a lot of practice, but
he figured out quickly and learned fast.

"Don't worry; it's very unlikely that we both end up inside a flaming
volcano. Though the possibility is always there. You must let me make the
spell right and stand right next to me in complete silence."

They walked to the main entry door. In there, Dylan stood looking at his
feet in complete silence.

"He must be doing the spell in his mind" Ray thought, and made an extra
effort to not even breathe.

Teleporting into a flaming volcano DID NOT sound good. That could ruin his
whole day.

After a few seconds of complete silence Dylan started to silently laugh and
then the laughter grew little by little. Ray understood then that Dylan was
just messing with him.

"There is no spell right, smartass??"

"Hahahaha NO. but your nervousness is impossibly funny. There is no spell I
just need to say where I want to go and turn the doorknob" And that's
exactly what he did. After saying Royal Academy for the Gifted he turned
the doorknob.

All of a sudden they were not outside the apartment but in a huge room that
must be the lobby for the academy. The place was huge and exquisitely
decorated. Big Curtains of different colors were on the wall. Each curtain
had a different symbol on it.

"What are those?" Ray asked referring to the symbols on the curtains

"Each symbol represents one of the main 3 abilities. Mine is that one"
Dylan said while pointing to a red curtain. The symbol consisted of a snake
wrapped around what looked like a stone.

"Oh I've seen it before. What's with the snake and the stone?"

"I'll explain that later. Right now we have to get to the arena!" Dylan
said pulling Ray from his shirt.

They rushed through the main lobby and through some hallways.

"Am I even allowed to be here? Dylan asked when he saw the faces of some
people in the hallways.

"Not technically. But they will let you stay. Now hurry up we are almost
there"

"Can't you do the same thing you did back at the apartment? The
teleportation thingy?"

"Nope. Theres a spell over the academy that cancels all magic from like
me. Many beginners cannot control their powers so they start blowing things
up, or disappearing parts of their bodies. It's not a funny scene. So
right now I'm as much as magical as you are hahaha. Here it is!!"

Dylan stood in front of the door, and froze there. His breathing started to
accelerate and he could feel the adrenaline in his blood.

"Dude was wrong?" Ray asked a little bit worried for the sudden reaction.

"I'm afraid!"

"You have absolutely no reason to be afraid. You are awesome. I've seen you
train. I've seen you fight. I know deep in my heart that you will beat
anybody that stands in front of you, and still be the same guy that is my
friend now. You can do this!!"

"That's exactly the reason that I needed you here!! Thanks Ray." Dylan said
while getting hold of the doorknob

"Wait" Ray said "What am I going to see behind this door?"

"Pure awesomeness!!" . . . . . . . .

Dylan opened the door and entered a small room with 2 doors on each side
and a glass window in front. The first thing you could feel was an intense
heat coming from the glass. They walked closer to the window and were
scared by an enormous tower of pure fire and at the same time someone spoke
to them from behind.

"You are late!!"

They both jumped from the sudden presence of a man, very good looking and
he seemed to be around 23. Well many masters had placed spells on
themselves giving them long life and a very slow aging. So that age could
easily be twice to what he looks like. He dressed in a red robe and with a
small notebook with a list on it.

"I know Master Evans!! Im sorry! Did I miss my turn?" Dylan asked, clearly
knowing the man.

"You are very lucky because you are next" Master Evan said while at the
same time directing his attention to Ray. "Is he a family member?" Giving
Ray a very ugly look.

"Not technically...."

"He's not allowed to be here!!"

"Look Master Evans I know what the rule says, but he is the only family I
got. And you know how important support is for a Mage. That's what
assistants are for. To help us, support us, and to be there for us. Please
let him stay here."

"All right, get ready!! As soon as this fight is over it's your turn." The
master said showing them the way through the left door.

"Thanks Master!" Dylan said. They both walked into the small room. There as
a table in the middle and a few chairs. It also had a square in a wall
where there was supposed to be a mirror

"That was a close one." Ray said after they had entered the room.

"I know right" Said Dylan with a small nervous laugh.

"You still nervous?"

"Yeah sorta but I feel better! Thanks for being such a good friend!"

"That's what I'm here for!" Ray said.

"Ok ok I have to get ready. I know the fight in the other side of this room
is almost finishing. Even with the spell on I can still feel the fight. It
must be pretty intense." He said while reaching for his backpack

"Yeah I could see that giant tower of fire. Was that a mage?"

"Most probable, but it requires a great amount of energy to create
something like that. What most mages do is create a summon. Which is the
same basic idea just easier!" Dylan said

"Interesting! Can you make any summons?"

"Some but not that powerful I still have to practice more" he said while
taking even more weapons out of his bag. By now the table was almost full
of weapons.

"Wow, how in the world did those things fit in that small backpack??"

"Haha it's a small trick I learned. It's a kind of space warp. Inside this
bag there is almost infinite space. But I have full control over where
everything is. It's tricky haha" Dylan said while taking out a huge maze
out of the small bag.

"I see" Ray said amazed. "But why are you taking weapons out? I've never
seen you fight with any weapon!"

"I've practiced a little bit with everyone but in this occasion I HAVE to
use one. So I'm taking a katana.

It's easy to use with one hand so my other hand is free for spells."

"Get ready!!!" said a Master after appearing out of nowhere.

"Yeah I felt the battle coming to an end. I'm ready!" he said while moving
to the door.

"Kick some butt!!!" Ray said with a thumb up. . . . . . . . . . .

Dylan's heart was racing while walking down the stairs that led to the
arena. The place was an enormous dome. Some rocks and boulders were placed
to make the place look kind of like a dessert. On the opposite side of
where he was standing he could also see some stairs.

"That must be from where my opponent will come out." Dylan thought.

He didn't have to wait long to see if he was right. A door opened form the
wall and out cam his opponent. Walking down the stairs was one of the most
stunning looking guys ever. He seemed 5.8, dirty blonde with beautiful
green eyes. His hairstyle was spiky. He was dressed in very light clothes,
for greater movement.

"He must be a great fighter"

By this point they were already close. The opponent stood in front of Dylan
and stretched his hand.

"Hey, I'm Kyle. You must be Dylan right?"

Dylan could only nod.

"I'll be your test for today. I'm supposed to tell you that you are today's
last entry."

"Have you fought against the others too?" Dylan asked

"Haha no, just like 2. My brother did the others. Just be glad you got me,
my brother is way more powerful."

In that moment a small light appeared above them. It was a dim white light.

"Well, that's our cue!!"

"Last match, Dylan Daniels, Mage Apprentice versus Kyle Bai, Mage. If the
apprentice wins he shall wait for admission to the Academy after
consideration from the Counsel." A voice spoke from the light.

"Good luck, I hope you pass. We are gonna have so much fun!" whispered Kyle
giving Dylan a smile.

"3, 2, 1. START!!" . . . . . . .

Dylan unsheathed his sword ready for the attack from Kyle. Kyle reached
over his belt and out of thin air drew two whips. Dylan could see in the
tip of the whips some metal objects that looked like small knifes.

Kyle attacked with one of his whips. The speed of the attack was so fast
that Dylan could barely dodge it.

In mid-dodge Dylan clearly saw the point of the whip, a small dagger change
into a bigger curved knife. With a movement of his hand, Kyle changed the
direction of the whip to continue the attack on Dylan. Using his sword,
Dylan managed to stop the attack. The force of the impact was enough to
send him flying a few meters in the air. When he landed, Dylan immediately
started the counter attack.

"Levitate!!" Dylan shouted while stretching his hand to a big rock. The
rock started levitating and Dylan waved the rock in Kyle's direction.

Using his second whip though, Kyle easily destroyed the rock. Dylan was
prepared for it, so as soon as he threw the rock he started building up a
plasma ball with one hand. When the debris of the rock faded away and he
could see Kyle again, he threw it.

"He has 2 options, dodge or stop the ball with some shield or his
weapon. As soon as he moves, that's my chance to get close" Dylan thought.
Anticipating a close attack Dylan traced two fingers over the sword's blade
and said : Shadow sword!!

Immediately the sword was surrounded by shadows that surrounded the swords
blade and stuck firmly to it, creating a black blade.

Without even breaking a sweat, Kyle dodged the plasma ball even though he
was really impressed that

Dylan could create a good plasma bolt with one hand in such a small amount
of time.

Immediately after Kyle dodged the attack, Dylan jumped and swung his
sword. That released a huge amount of shadows to come out of the sword.

Kyle did not expect that moved and quickly dodged. Not soon enough as the
attacked managed to slightly cut Kyle's arm. When Dylan saw that his
attacked had worked he started swinging his sword.

Sending even more shadow slashes towards Kyle.

"Protego!!" Kyle shouted putting his hand in front of him.

All of a sudden a bright yellow transparent dome appeared over Kyle
protecting him from the attack.

Inside his shield Kyle placed the whips on the floor and placed his hands
in front of him, closed his eyes and starting whispering t himself. He
started to create a glowing ball in the middle of his hands.

Dylan had no idea what that ball was but he guessed that it was not
good. He kneeled and touching the floor said:

"From the earth I will form you! You will be hard as stone! But fast as
myself! I summon you, Earth Warrior!"

Slowly he raised himself up and the ground in front of him started to
crumble and from stone a human figure started to rise, until it was
standing side by side with Dylan.

"Get ready! Here it comes!" Dylan told the summon.

Just like Dylan predicted Kyle started to speak a little bit stronger.

"..... from the stars up high the power of the gods I will borrow. Though
weak I shall do my best to honor thy power. "

"He is summoning an Orb!!I thought only a master could summon an Orb!"
Dylan thought. "He used the shield to buy enough time to prepare the
enchantment for the summon!"

"Time Orb!!!!" Kyle said.

A huge blast surged from the orb knocking both Dylan and his summon to the
ground. Standing in front of them was Kyle, but in different clothing. He
had a white clothes and his hair was white. Both whips were white now and
they somehow glowed.

"Get ready Dylan!!" Kyle said before disappearing.

Out of thin air he appeared in between Dylan and the Earth summon. Dylan
had just the right time to defend from his attack. The summon received most
of the damage. Still they both survived the attack.

"Impressive very few people actually manage to resist that attack, and your
summon did a great job too. Keep it up. " Kyle said before disappearing
again.

"Ok he has the time orb which means he is moving way faster than normal,
but that's not all he is also in the middle of space time. He won't resist
such power for long."

"Summon, divide and protect!!" Dylan commanded, The summon ran towards
him. "Stone Shield!!" He shouted and the summon just blew up into thousands
of flying pebbles and started floating around him.

Just in time as Kyle reappeared. This time his attack was stopped by the
stone shield and quickly returned by Dylan. With the shadows in his sword
he manage to get a hold of Kyle's arm. Kyle tried to cut it off but the
pebbles blocked the attack. It was as if the pebbles had a mind of their
own.

"Of course the shield will protect, they are still the summon so it's
intelligent." Kyle thought to himself.

Kyle immediately started attacking Dylan in combat. But Dylan was just as
fast as he was. Blocking and evading each move. Dylan even used the stones
to create a glove with which to hit Kyle.

Kyle was getting even more confused by the second How could he be as fast
as him if he had the Time orb.

"Of course!!! The shadow also serves as a leech spell. He is absorbing the
orb's power!"

After each blow that Kyle tried to hit, Dylan would immediately block and
even counterattacked. Yet none of them really received any serious
blow. After some minutes that in normal time were about 4 seconds they both
stopped, exhausted. Dylan released the shadow from Kyle's arm and returned
to the sword.

Right then, Kyle's orb faded away leaving him with his normal black
clothes.

"That was pretty impressive. You had no chance with me using the orb and
you knew it. That's why you used a leech spell. It's not very often you see
an apprentice successfully doing one. But this fight isn't over." Kyle said
positioning himself in a fighting stance.

Dylan prepared himself for this second round. The stone shield was still up
and almost invisibly floating around Dylan.

In a movement Dylan did not expect, Kyle got rid of his whips and placed
his hands in front of him.

"This is not good!!" Dylan whispered. No weapon meant agile movements and
even more powerful spells.

Kyle started waving his wand and immediately a huge amount of fire starting
coming out of his hands.

With a wrist movement Kyle maneuvered the fire in Dylan's direction.

"Shield!!" Dylan shouted while putting his hands in front of him. The
stones that were floating around him gathered and created a shield. That
was the fastest reaction he could make. The shield gave him enough time to
think of a counterattack.

"Warp hole!!" Dylan shouted raising his left hand in the direction of the
fire. From his hand a black hole appeared and started sucking all the fire
attack from Dylan.

"Im not done!" Said Dylan and he raised his right hand and pointed one
finger in Kyle's direction. Above Kyle another black hole appeared and from
it, fire started coming out. Kyle just had enough time to jump out of its
path.

When he landed he was shocked when he realized that Dylan was close enough
to slice him with his sword.

"How did he get here so fast, he was at least 5 feet away!!! Thought Kyle.
As fast as he could he summoned a staff and blocked Dylan's attack, but
Dylan immediately attacked again and again and again.

The attacks were very fast and he was getting tired, fast. Again Dylan's
sword was covered in shadows which made every attack even stronger. He had
to do something. So in a chance he had he yelled

"Paralyze" for the spell to work he must be in direct contact with
Dylan. And the special ability of his staff allows contact with weapons to
transfer spells. Which meant the next defense block would paralyze him for
2 seconds. Enough time to stop Dylan.

Once it happened, Kyle rapidly made a power surge from his hand sending
Dylan flying to the wall. Kyle waved his hands again and fire started to
come out of his hands. He threw the fire at Dylan and yelled

Fire seal.

The fire surrounded Dylan but without harming him.

Kyle then proceeded to create a rock seal, waking his hands in a more
powerful and straight way. And a huge boulder came out from the ground and
covered Dylan. You could still see the fire. It was like a combination of
both elements that kept Dylan from moving.

"This battle is over!!" Said the master in charge of the fight. "Kyle
wins!!!" . . . . . .

Up in the room, Ray, saw the whole fight, and was a little sad that Dylan
didn't win. But he was ready to cheer him up.

"Come with me !!" said a voice from behind startling Ray, who, out of
training, punched Master Evan right on the chin.

"Oh my, I'm so sorry!!! It was just a reaction!!" Ray started apologizing
but was interrupted by Master Evan. He just raised his hand and said "Come
with me please, you have to go meet Dylan in the waiting room." Master Evan
said and started walking to a door that all of a sudden appeared.

"I thought this was the waiting room!" asked Ray

Master Evans stopped mid track and said "The other waiting room! Please
follow me!" His tone just a little bit higher, but still very subtle.

Ray decided it was best not to piss off a Master of The Magic Arts or he
may end up as chicken or something.

"Ok!" Ray said as he followed Master Evan through some halls.

Very quickly they were in front of a very big door.

"Your friend is waiting in the other side." For some reason his voice had
turned extremely calm and Ray could even perceive concern coming from
him. "Not everybody takes loosing this test very well. So he may need your
support."

"Thank you!" said Ray "And sorry about hitting you!"

"It's ok, I forget that not everybody is used to someone sneaking up on
them. By the way, your reflexes are amazing!!" said Maser Evans clearly
more relaxed.

"Thanks, lots of training" Ray said while ribbing the back of his head "I
better look for Dylan! Thanks again."

"You are welcome! Now go!" the Master said while waving towards the
door. The door slowly started opening.

Inside the room, Dylan was seating down in a bench. He was looking to the
ceiling. Slowly Ray walked towards him and sat down right beside him.

"I let them down Ray" Dylan whispered almost in tears.

"No! Don't say that! Your parents would be proud!"

Dylan moved so to face Ray.

"They always told me to be strong. To learn everything myself. They said
that I had the ability to achieve many great things. But here I am, sitting
down in a freaking waiting room, after I failed THE big test!!"

Dylan was on the edge of crying now.

"I know I never had the chance to meet your parents, but I'm very sure they
wouldn't have cared about you losing. You fought bravely. I've never seen
you so focused and fighting so good as you did today. I am proud of you."
Ray said reaching Dylan in his shoulder.

"I know. I still wanted to win. This could've been an awesome experience
for us. Now I have to wait 2 years to take the test again. And I can't ask
you to stop your life for me." Dylan placed his hands in his face to hide
his tears.

"Wow calm down now. Is this what it's about. We having to split. Dude I'm
not going anywhere. We will figure something out. Besides they still
haven't told you anything. Let's see what they say and then we take
decisions. But you know I'm here for you, I aint leaving." Ray said giving
Dylan a hug.

As they separated from their hug Dylan wiped his tears.

"Thank you Ray. For being here with me. I don't know how would I been
feeling without you"

"You are welcome bro!" Ray said giving Dylan a small punch in the shoulder.

In that moment the doors opened and a Master came out.

"The council will see you now!" Because the Master saw hesitation from Ray
if he should come inside or not, he said "Both of you!"

They nervously walked into the hall, not knowing the surprise they were
going to get.

. . . . . . . . . .
