"I just gave him the news, sir," one guard said to another.

investigated him. They think he kidnapped or killed Jeremy
Stonefeather and took over his identity. Jeremy was Vin-Ta."
Hephin began crying when he realized someone innocent was dead

One of the guards opened the box. There was a mechanical
device inside.
"It is a rebreather. It will provide air until he gets to the
interrogation facility."
The man was put inside the box and it was closed and sealed.
"What will happen to him?" Hephin asked.
"It depends. It could be his own plan he was executing, or he
could have been hired to do it, or he could even be an
involuntary participant. What happens to him depends on what we
find out while we are questioning him and the others," a guard
said.
"You captured others?"
"Yes. We captured two Vin-Ta who were in the parking lot of
the Dairy Queen. Another in the forest on the other side of the
highway, and three at the airport. We are still looking."
Hephin didn't have the guards names memorized, yet. There were
a lot of them, and they worked shifts. He only knew six by name.
The box was carried out and most of the guards left the house.
Four remained with them.
"Alephin, did you know this was happening?" Hephin asked.
"Yes."
"Why wasn't I told?"
Alephin rubbed his face.
"We needed you to act normal. Otherwise, they might have
gotten spooked and waited until another time. A time when
security wasn't expecting them. It wasn't an easy decision."
Hephin sighed. It made sense, but he didn't like it.
"I wonder if I can have a hysterectomy," he said.
They all laughed.
"Alephin, now that they failed getting me, do you think they
will go after Dad?"
"Hephin, welcome to your future. There will be lots of
attempts on both of you. Hopefully they will all go as smoothly
as this one. Dag's men are professionals and they are very good

"Don't think about it, Hephin. You don't have to let them ruin
our lives," Elepan said.
Hephin agreed about not letting them ruin their lives.
"I want to learn self-defense," Hephin said. "I want all of us

Alephin nodded.
"It's probably best that you do it before your pregnancy
advances much more." Alephin said.
"Max and I have training," Dregor said. "We can start teaching
you tomorrow. Dag may want to bring someone else in to teach, but
there isn't any reason you need to wait. "

"Thank you, Dregor."

Elepan could sense how upset Hephin was. He took him in his

"No. Elepan says I have very little aggression in me."
"Well, he is your mate. He knows you best. That is my

people who do a much, much better job of protecting me than I
could do. I don't want to spend years in training, like them."
