The Four Elements

Chapter 6: Burning Anger

Shiana once again entered the grand chamber. She came to the throne, and
kneeled before the robed figure.

"Lord, at your request, I have tried to locate Telon and Rynon, but they seem
to have disappeared." Her voice trembled as she spoke.

"And what of Caron?" The robed figure leaned forward in the throne.

"He..." She cleared her throat. "He was with Kaylon when Viath was destroyed,
it seems Viath inadvertently killed him." She kept her head bowed.

"I'm growing impatient with your idiocy Shiana." The figure's voice was
eerily calm.

"But Lord, I thought they weren't supposed to be in contact with each other."
 Her voice was pleading.

"Shall I add that to your list of blunders then?"

"Lord I... I... I will find Kaylon and Caron for you. I will not fail you again."

"You had better not."

Shiana quickly got up, walking as quickly from the room as possible.

"And Shiana." The figure called after her, she turned to listen. "If you
make any more mistakes, I will make certain you exist in utter pain for the rest
of eternity."

"Yes Lord." She quickly ran from the room.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a man in a white coat waiting as the helicopter landed. He was a
small man, with black hair, combed over his obvious bald spot. Large black
rimmed glasses sat on his bulbous nose. He rushed up to the helicopter as the door
opened. A older man, wearing a U.S. army uniform stepped from the helicopter.
The two shook hands, and ran towards the small unassuming building as the
helicopter took off.

"General Shorkav I'm so glad you could make it." The small man said.

"So Doctor Kelman, what's so important that I had to come all the way out
here?" The General asked as the two stepped into an elevator inside the building.

"Some really exciting things have been happening in the past few days." The
Doctor began excitedly as he pressed a button in the elevator, beginning its
decent.

"You think everything you do is exciting Doctor. Now why did you make me fly
out here to the middle of fucking nowhere?" He was getting slightly annoyed.

"It's the second artifact sir. It's acting like the first one." He relayed
excitedly.

"What caused it to happen?" The general was no longer annoyed, but highly
interested.

"We don't know sir, the monitors showed several small EM spikes, then an
enormous one. Now the artifacts are giving the exact same readings. There's just
one difference."

"And that is?" The General raised his eyebrow at the Doctor.

"The second artifact has a green luminescence, as opposed to the red
luminescence the first one has."

"Show me." The General ordered.

The elevator door opened upon a large white room, and the two stepped out.
There was only two doors, one being the elevator doors, the other being a large
steel door on the opposite side of the room. Next to the door was a small
keypad and card reader. The Doctor walked up to the steel door, sliding his card
through the reader, and punching in a code. The pad's light clicked green, and
the door began sliding open, revealing a long passage. They walked along the
passage, with the steel door shutting behind them. At the end of the passage
there was a sliding glass door that opened as they approached. Inside there was
a series of desks, at each one sat various men and women, all in lab coats,
and all very consumed with various instruments and computers.

They walked through the room, turning down a hallway at the right. At the
end, there was another steel door. This one was much larger, and resembled a
safe door. The Doctor slid his card in the reader next to the door, punching in
another set of numbers. The door whirred and clanked, then finally began
swinging open. It took some time for the massive door to swing completely open. The
room beyond was dark, except for two spotlights shining on two thick
plexi-glass containers. Various wires were streaming out of the two cases. Inside each
one, stood an enormous sword, one giving off a red glow, the other giving off
a green glow. The blades for the swords were identical, each about 4 feet in
length, about 8 inches wide, and almost 2 inches thick through the center. Each
sword had a completely different hilt, the one glowing red had intricate
carvings of flames across the grip, and it was adorned with rubies. The other sword
's hilt was carved so it appeared it had vines growing all over it, and it
was adorned with emeralds.

"Amazing. Do you know yet what's causing the luminescence?" The General
asked.

"We know that the first artifact's EM emissions are synchronized with the
test subject, we assume it has something to do with that. But the second artifact
's emissions are not synched with the subject, and they seem to have no
correlation to the subject's new emissions." The Doctor said excitedly.

"New emissions?" The general turned to the doctor.

"Yes sir, new EM spikes have been occurring in the subject, but they are not
linked to either of the artifacts."

"Do you know what they are linked to Doctor?"

"No sir... Sir, there's more."

"Explain."

"It'd be best if you saw for yourself sir."

The two walked from the room, letting the enormous door close behind them.
They navigated their way through several hallways and corridors until they came
upon a white double door with an armed guard standing beside it. As the two
approached, he turned, hitting in some keys, and the door slide open. They
walked inside the room, which looked like a control room for NASA. Various
monitoring devices were scattered about the room, each with a scientist diligently
observing it. At the far side of the room, was a large retracting steel door. At
each side stood another armed guard.

"Open it." The Doctor relayed to the guards.

The guard turned, and hit a large button behind him. As soon as he had done
so, the large door began sliding upwards into the ceiling, revealing a foot
thick plexi-glass window behind it.

"That's impossible." The General stood gape-mouthed staring through the
window.

"I know, its absolutely amazing isn't it?"

The two stared through the window, inside stood an almost normal human male
with his back facing the window. He stood at 6 feet tall, with spiky red hair
on his head. From his back, two scaled red wings extended out 8 feet in both
directions. The General approached the window to look closer, as he did so, the
creature turned to face the window. He stood naked inside the room, his
muscular chest, body, and his large dangling penis visible to all the people in the
observation room. The creatures eyes were red as blood, staring angrily at
the window.

"Absolutely amazing. What caused the new growth Doctor?" The general asked.

"We're still not sure, the change only took 8 minutes and 42 seconds. It's
like they were already there, but our CAT scans didn't show anything. He's
beautiful though, isn't he?" The Doctor placed his hand onto the window
affectionately, the creature placed his hand in the spot opposite the Doctor's hand.

"It Doctor, not he, it."

"Yes... of course sir." The Doctor removed his hand from the window, the
creature did not.

"You said something about extraneous emissions Doctor?" The General faced
the Doctor.

"Yes sir." He pointed the General over to some charts. "Just before the
second artifact activated, the subject was giving off EM emissions that differed
from the previous pattern."

"Did the subject activate the artifact?"

"We thought so at first, but the second artifact's pattern is not synching
with the subject's new emissions."

"Doctor are you saying..." The General was interrupted by the Doctor.

"Yes sir, the second artifact is synching with another creature." The Doctor
said excitedly.

"And the new emissions?"

"We think its some form of communication between them, or possibly some sort
of link."

"Um, Doctor..." One the scientists interrupted. "The temperature in the room
is increasing quickly."

"What?" The Doctor rushed over to a console.

"What's happening Doctor?" The General was concerned.

"I'm not sure." The Doctor quickly responded. "The temperature in the room
is increasing rapidly for some reason."

"Sir, it's reaching 150 degrees!" The scientist exclaimed.

"Doctor, get control back immediately." The General was getting angry.

"Doctor, the glass! It's melting!" The scientist stood from his console and
pointed at the now bowing glass, the creature still had his hand upon it.

"Close the shield now!" The Doctor yelled, one of the guards quickly slammed
his hand on the large button, the metal door began sliding down.

"Doctor, the temperature is still rising, the shield will melt if it keeps
increasing." The scientist exclaimed.

"Gas the room!" The Doctor ordered, the hiss of pipes could be heard above
them, followed by the thump of a body from behind the metal shield.

"It worked sir, the temperature is decreasing." The scientist said.

"Doctor, remind me why we don't terminate the subject and dissect it?" The
general was visibly upset.

"Sir, we don't know what other changes may occur in the subject, and we
still don't know how to activate the artifacts without it." The Doctor was almost
pleading.

"Put in some better security measures, I don't want this happening again."

"Yes sir."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"What the hell happened here?" Jarod exclaimed as he stood in the burnt out
shell of a building, once a small psychic's shop.

"Hell indeed." Isa responded as she picked her way through the rubble.

"What's that awful smell?" Jarod turned up his nose at the new scent.

"It's coming from the back room, go check it out Jarod."

"Aww man..." Jarod opened the door to the back. "Isa... you'd better come take
a look at this."

"What's so important that I..." She stopped speaking when she looked into the
back room.

The back room was more or less intact, except the entire inside was charred
black. There was a circular part of the floor that had completely burned away,
leaving only blackened dirt. At the head of the circle, there was a kneeling
figure, burnt beyond any recognition, and obviously the source of the foul
smell.

"What did this?" As Jarod asked, Isa turned and stared at him blankly.

"We have a new problem."
