Chapter 2: The Urge to explore

I felt very cold; in fact when I opened my eyes all I could see around me was
an endless white. I was no longer in the warm coastal forest of my home. I
seemed to be on some mountainside. I had no idea where I was. It was no
longer nighttime. I reached for my pack, but it was not there, only my staff.
The purple orb on the end of my staff glowed with a slight blue undertone. I
noticed this only happened when there was magik around me. Even the way I was
not dressed was different. I was dressed in the skins of some animal, fox
perhaps. I pulled the furs closer to my face to keep the biting wind away.
>From some where in the distance I heard deep voices, the snow falling was
blurring my vision, my senses though seemed to sharpen. This however was
still an unfamiliar atmosphere, I have never been this far up in the
mountains in deep snow. Panic was creeping in, but I urged myself to gain
control. Deep within my mind I heard a familiar voice say "To panic means
death, you are strong and you must be brave trust in yourself." A felt a
spell dance into my mind, one I had not used too often, it was a cloaking
spell one to shield my presence from others. I needed some time to figure
out where I was, time to gather my wits. Where ever I was I could not stay
or else I would freeze. I refused to be broken, to give into the fear I felt.
My will to survive growing with each passing minute. Again the voice grew
closer, and I crouched down into the bushes around me. I prayed my cloaking
spell would be effective. Into the small clearing stepped very strange
creatures, ones I had not seen before. They were half animal and half man,
indeed bearmen, but unlike any I had seen. They were as white as the snow and
much larger than any bear men I had seen. I sensed an evil about these men.
My orb seemed to hum in my ears, yes these creatures were of magik as well.
If indeed they were magik users this I could not tell, at the very least they
were made of magik. As the walked past me I counted them, there 7 all
together. 5 were armed as if they were soldiers and the other two were
dressed ornately, perhaps the superiors all of them had dangerous looking
weapons. Their paws were huge and at the end were very long claws as long as
my dagger. Unconsciously I reached for my dagger thankfully it was there.
The Bearmen seemed to be dragging something behind them; I postured for a
better look. It was a little man, a dwarf. They had his hands tied behind his
head and were dragging him. This had to be painful. What should I do, I
thought I could not interfere with a situation I did not know. I sensed that
the dwarf was not evil he was harmless. Why then are they caring him around
as if he were a sack of food? I must get closer, for some reason I felt the
urge to help this dwarf. How was I going to accomplish this? The Bearmen
stopped and looked around, one looked in my direction and sniffed the air. I
crouched lower; damn I hope I was not discovered. I was not sure I could
fight 7 bearmen all at once. Strangely enough I was not afraid. I imagined
this is the type of thing my older brother had to face in his training. The
one bearman turned away satisfied that nothing was there. I said a silent
prayer of thanks to the silver moon. It seemed to me the creatures were
setting up camp. This was a good thing. I could sneak closer in the night. I
watched as they tied the dwarf to a Tree. They slapped him around a bit till
he slumped over motionless, I thought he might be dead, I felt a rage growing
in me and a spell of Fireball came to my mind, I could melt them all to the
ground, but then I would kill the dwarf as well. I gained control of the
spell and let it dissipate. Then I saw the dwarf-taking small shallow
breathes he tiny chest rising and falling ever so slightly. The voice in me
said "You must remain calm, in the calm you will find answers." It was
obvious the voice of magik was back, but now more annoyingly giving me
riddles than teaching me anything.

I inched my way closer making sure to use the natural cover surrounding us.
Occasionally one of the Bearmen would look up in each direction, once I was
close enough to hear their conversation I settled in. I'd wait for the cover
of darkness to make a move, if any at all. I sat silently and observed them,
all the while willing the little dwarf to hang on to life. I learned the
Bearmen had pillaged a little dwarf village in the upper part of the
mountain. The one dwarf was a capture proof to their over lord they had
destroyed the village. How awful I though. So many lives lost and the one
dwarf left witnessed it all. I felt a tinge of pain in my heart. What evil
these creatures were. Then I saw my moment, the light was ebbing and the
bearmen were drifting off to sleep. With no dwarfs left to attack them, the
Bearmen posted no guards. First I cast a spell to change my appearance, I
chose the look of a Bearman, to look like them. I then cast a spell of
particle movement "Silent wind of the very cold night, take me to save this
life" I felt myself slip into the wind and appearing behind the tree where
the dwarf was tied. The Dwarf was startled, but I whispered for him to remain
quiet or we both would be done for. I worked to untie him but told him to
remain still and not to move until I told him to. I placed my hands into the
ground sending my will through the earth into the trees. I silently commanded
the trees to extend their branches down to wrap around the bearmen, I
envisioned in my mind the bearmen held tight in place unable to move. I
needed to focus on the vision, not be disturbed otherwise the spell over the
trees would be broken. The Bearmen screamed in alarm, unsure where and what
was attacking them. I stepped into the shadows and made my way to each tree
holding a bearman. I disarmed each of them. I could see the hate and anger in
their eyes as I moved from one of them to the next. In my best bearman voice
I told them this was in enchanted forest. That they have angered the spirits,
if they dared to move they would be spiked with the thorns on the vines
holding them, and the thorns were a poison that would cause a slow and
painful death. I tried to make it as dramatic as possible. "I took the
weapons and I threw them over the side of the mountain. Just as I was about
to throw their supplies over the side the dwarf yelled in a pained voice
"Please young lad, in one of the sacks there is a spiked mace, and there is a
small wooden box. Please save them they are mine." I found the mace and the
box and tossed the supply over. The Bears screamed at me in anger.

I ran over the dwarf and asked him if he would be able to walk as I handed
him his mace and box. He assured me he was fine. "Good, we need to get as far
from here as possible the trees will not hold them for too long" I whispered.
The dwarf agreed and we hurried to get him down from his perch. I turned to
the Bearmen, and spotting their fire I commanded the flames to rise towards
the sky. With a bright flash of light the flames grew high to the sky. The
heat as powerful the bearmen turned their heads and closed their eyes, trying
to shield themselves from the heat. In the moment of distraction I grabbed
the dwarf and slipped into the shadows. As we hurried a long I was amazed at
the strength the little man was showing we ran for a couple of miles until we
had to slow to a slower pace "How are you able to keep up with me?" I asked,
stopping to catch my breath, looking back and seeing we had come quite a
ways. The little man smiled at me " I only pretended to be injured badly, the
worse I was the less they would harm me". I pondered that for a moment
"Indeed you are right my friend, I think that was a wise move." Again looking
back the way we came I could see our tracks in the snow. "We must do
something about that," I said aloud more to myself than to anyone else. I
pulled my staff from my belt and it grew to its full length with a sweep of
my hand a wind blew down the path we came covering our tracks in the snow.
Again I whispered a command and the trees stretched and grew around the
broken branched we created crashing through. I asked for forgiveness from the
forest for not asking permission to enter. Then I turned again to the Dwarf
"Now please tell me what that back there was all about?" The dwarf told me
his tale. I learned his name was Brimmer he was about 30 years old in Human
years or 180 in dwarf years and he was a mountain dwarf. He relayed the same
tale the Bearman told about destroying the village. When Brimmer finished his
story I could see tears in his eyes. "Well Brimmer, My name is Thialon and
that is about as much as I can tell you. I have no idea where I am or why I
am here" I sadly stated. There were a few moments of silence then Brimmer
spoke "Looks like we are both homeless now on this mountainside. I have no
idea where to go, you have no idea where to go, so I say where ever it is we
go, we go together we have better chance of ah...getting there if we stick
together. I want to thank you for saving my life Thialon. I was not sure what
I was going to do. I saw you watching us from the distance, I was not sure
what you were at first I thought perhaps I was seeing things but then I saw
the slightest of movements I knew I might have a chance"Brimmer said with
gratitude. "How did you see me? I asked, "I used a cloaking spell." This
little dwarf was very mysterious indeed there was something odd about him,
but not in a bad way, nor in a good way either. So just shrugged the feeling
off.

Brimmer then explained that mountain dwarfs had a sort of natural magik the
ability to see auras of magik, mostly at night. Mountain Bearman, Like forest
Bearmen have very poor sight but excellent sense of smell. So Brimmer
explaind we may have gotten away this time but eventually they will track us
down. However thankfully they will not come with reinforcements the shame of
letting a dwarf escape is not worth the risk. So I thought to myself we will
eventually have to battle them. "Thialon, why the look of worry? Between your
great magik and my skill at the mace we can handle 7 Bearman. We have an
advantage a huge head start and in this weather they will be hard pressed to
smell us out." That was a little comfort to me, but poor Brimmer did he not
realize I was just a kid, not a powerful mage. I barely had command of my
Magik, whats worse the more I used magik, the more it will be known there is
a magik user in these parts. Which only increases my chances of meeting Chal.
A chill ran down my spine, I could not tell if it were from the cold, or the
thought of meeting Chal. I wrapped my furs around me more. I have not idea
where I am going, but I know I can't stay here for long. I yawned and
thought myself "One minute I am in the middle of a coastal forest the next I
am fighting bearmen on some unknown mountainside rescuing a mysterious little
dwarf, what would be next a troll, Elf warriors, or worse yet Dragon men.
