The Warlock Journals
Chapter One: New Beginnings
January 1, 2000
So much has happened in one day I don't know where to
start. I guess it all started yesterday with this journal.
My mom came home from shopping with this journal and a black
overcoat for me. The journal is bound in black leather with
the initials PC on the cover in gold lettering and looks
about a hundred years old. When I asked my mom if she had
the diary specially made for me, knowing I would love
something like this, she informed me that she found it and
the coat at an antique shop. She had never seen the shop
before and decided to browse, when she saw the journal she
knew immediately that is was for me, but seeing my initials
on it just made her even more positive. My name is Parker
Caligo.
It was New Years Eve and both my mother and I had
plans. She was going on a date and I was going to Brad's
party. Brad is one of my classmates. He is jock, so he has
a great body, but he also has a wonderful personality and is
smart as hell. Brad is utterly perfect in every way. I on
the other hand am very plain. I have dark brown hair, about
one inch long at the top and shorter going down, dark brown
eyes that are usually behind my glasses and a pretty average
build. I am very shy and because of this my mom is my one
and only friend. Yes, I am a geek, but I get straight A's.
Well, the reason I was invited to Brad's party was because
everyone in the entire school was invited. Brad was just
that type of guy. I went mostly so my mom would not feel
bad about going on her date. She didn't want to leave me
home alone to usher in the new millennium.
Well, Brad's party was at a downtown bar. I drove my
mom's car and had to park like two blocks away from the
place. Downtown Chicago sucks, I am glad I live in
Naperville. The new overcoat my mom got me kept me
surprisingly warm. Anyway, I reached the bar; Brad's uncle
owns it and he let Brad throw his New Year's Eve bash there.
Since most of us were sophomores, like Brad, instead of
alcohol, some white grape substitute was being passed off as
champagne. I spent the entire party sitting in the corner
fantasizing about Brad. I did not leave until two in the
morning. As I was walking back to the car I got a strange
feeling that I was being followed. That is when I blacked
out.
When I came to, I was at home on the kitchen floor,
covered in blood. My mom was shaking me; she thought the
blood was mine. I was still very foggy when she was helping
me take off my bloody clothes and get into the shower.
While I was showering, my mom was cleaning the blood up
around the house. Then she took my clothes in the backyard
and set fire to them. I was very confused. But as I sat at
my window watching my mom burn my clothes all I could think
was, "Man, I really liked that coat, shame she had to burn
it." I was oddly not very disturbed by my black out or the
condition I was in afterward. Even though I was probably
going to go to jail for killing some poor person I couldn't
seem to make myself care.
My mom seemed to know more about what was going on then
I did. She kept assuring me that if something "weird" had
happened she would believe me, if I just told her. I swore
to her again and again that I had blacked out and did not
remember what happened. During our conversation the phone
rang. We rarely got calls and it was four making this even
more unusual. Mom answered the phone and after a few
seconds she said, "Cedric." Her eyes were filled with
surprise. Mine were too because Cedric was my father's name
who "allegedly" died before I was born. But his
resurrection was not the source of her surprise. She was
surprised because he knew our phone number.
So mom lied to me about my dad being dead. I couldn't
really talk to her about at the time because she was
fighting with him. I could only here half the conversation,
but it sounded like she never told him I existed and he
wanted me to come live with him in order to "be safe" and
"learn who I am". What they finally settled on was Evan, my
brother (I have a brother!), coming to stay here for the
winter semester, to provide the protecting and teaching and
for me to go there for the summer.
After hanging up, mom took the time to explain to me
what was happening. She told me I was a warlock. She told
me she dated Cedric for two years in college, most of that
time she knew what he was and that they could never be
together. Cedric had to marry another witch. As a mortal
his family could have killed her just for knowing the
secret. Right before graduation mom realized she was
pregnant but never told Cedric because she didn't know what
he would do. Even though I probably should have thought my
mom was nuts having never seen anything "magical" in my
life, I knew she was telling the truth. I could feel it.
Though I got very little sleep I could not wait for
Evan's arrival. I was not sure how he was going to get from
California to Chicago in one day but they said he would be
here later today. Well, passing by the guest room I noticed
that it wasn't the guest room at all anymore. Where there
was a light airy tan decor a now dark, black decor had
replaced it. The walls were covered in dark colored rock
posters. There were clothes and items that belonged to
neither my mother nor I. Like a black computer and dark
black curtains and black sheets. It was obvious whoever
decorated this room shared my favorite color, although my
mom tries to keep me from wearing all black, she feels its
dreary.
On the bed was black figure, at first I did not notice
him, he blended in the room like a chameleon. I took a
closer look. A bandana held back his four inch dark brown
hair. He had on loose fitting black jeans and an oversized
black T-shirt and a lot of silver. A silver chain went from
his pants to his pocket connecting to his wallet. He had on
a spike silver bracelet and a couple of rings. Another
silver chain hung from his neck, holding an unusual pendant
and he had a diamond in his ear with a silver backing. I
assumed the guy sleeping in the guest room was Evan and I
tried to wake him but shaking him did not work. I then
called for my mom.
We called Cedric back and he explained Evan insisted on
taking his car, and transporting all his stuff and a car,
drained him. Evan would need tons of sleep, but then he
would be fine. I looked in the driveway and there was a
black Diablo there. I can't wait to meet my brother. He
seems like the pure definition of cool. I hope his
personality matches his appearance. He is pretty hot. He
doesn't look like me though. I mean people would believe we
are brothers but people wouldn't automatically assume we are
brothers. Our similarities pretty much stop at same hair
and eye color. I know his eye color because I lifted his
eyelid in an attempt to wake him. It is very annoying
having all the answers asleep in then next room. I don't
have patience like that. I really wish he would wake up. I
want to start learning magic and stuff.
January 3, 2000
Well Evan woke up just in time for breakfast today. He
slept through the entirety of yesterday. On a happy note,
my coat came back; I found it in my closet yesterday. I
guess it's not very flammable. I spent all yesterday
sitting in Evan's room watching him sleep. I knew that he
would probably wake if I tried to wake him, but I did not
want to be rude. He came down for breakfast already dressed
for school. He had showered and changed so I am guessing he
had been up for at least an hour. My mom was being so
polite, "Good morning Evan, come have breakfast. I hope you
like pancakes."
"I love pancakes Ms. Cleaver."
"No, call me Amanda."
"Will do, Amanda."
By this point I was jealous. I am not quite sure why.
I don't know if I was jealous over Evan or my mom, but it
seemed like they were flirting. At that point Evan must
have noticed my discomfort because he gently placed his hand
on mine and said, "Parker, I have been dying to meet you
from the moment I knew you existed." His touch was
electrifying, his eyes seemed to pierce my very soul and I
was melting. Being a virgin, this was quite possibly the
most erotic moment of my life. I will now remind myself
this guy is my brother and I need to go take a cold shower.
In response to his deeply moving statement, I turned red,
started looking at the floor and mumbled something about
really wanting to meet him to.
When it was time to leave out for school mom suggested
I ride with Evan to get to know him better. She followed
behind us in her car. Evan asked me questions about myself
while I stared at him working the stick shift. I paid just
enough attention to mumble so sort of answer to questions
like, what are your hobbies and other benign stuff. He then
said something about me still being shy. I was too caught
up in his aura (yes I will call it aura) to think what he
meant at the time.
When we reached the school mom went with Evan to
register him. I went to biology, my first class. Yes,
having biology as the first class of the day is a cruel sick
joke. But there is one good thing about it. Brad is in
biology. I had almost forgotten about Brad with all that
had happened lately. But sitting right behind him, being
able to stare at his dusty blond hair and beautiful neck, I
was right back where I should be, worshipping my god. Ten
minutes into the lecture the principle entered with Evan,
"Hello class, this is Evan Caligo. Please, make him feel at
home." The biology teacher asked if he was any relation to
me. The rest of the class was looking at me waiting for an
answer. I was completely freaking out under so much
scrutiny, but Evan handled it well. He half hugged me in my
seat and said, "Parker is my long lost half brother." Then
he took a seat next to me.
The teacher replied, "I am sure you have a very
interesting story, but we will have to hear it later, right
now we need to get through the parts of a cell." Then she
went back to teaching. Everyone seemed satisfied with that
and stopped staring, but I was still looking at Evan for
some direction. He smiled at me and winked which put me
somewhat at ease. Then he opened his book bag, which was
one of those cool single strap ones, and pulled out a binder
and pen. He started taking notes. Both the book bag and
the binder were black with silver lining. The pen was
completely silver. I was starting to doubt the boy owned
anything that wasn't black or silver. Actually I am pretty
sure he doesn't.
After the bell rang Evan waited for me outside the
door. He wanted to compare schedules. We had biology,
english, gym and lunch together. That was half the day and
quite normal for sophomores at my school to share that many
classes. I seemed to have those four classes with about ten
people then the other three with a different ten people out
of the twenty five in each class. Brad walked up to us and
introduced himself to Evan. We were going to be late for
class if we didn't get moving, Brad really wanted to hear
our story but there wasn't time. So I headed off to trig,
while Evan went to computer science and Brad went to study
hall.
The day went pretty usual until fifth period lunch. I
took my seat, alone in the back corner, I always sat there
and no one ever bothered joining me. Lunch for me was a bit
depressing. Well, when Evan walked in, with his tray, he
looked at me and smiled and started heading my way. I was
kind of happy at the thought of not eating alone. Then Brad
called him and motioned for him to join him at the popular
table. I thought Evan would surely ditch me for the
beautiful people, but he pointed toward me to show Brad
where he was heading and came to my table.
Then the coolest thing happened, Brad excused himself
from the popular table and headed over to us. Evan began
telling Brad about how his father was in love with my mom
and meant to marry her, but they were partners in a secret
FBI agency and could not marry unless one of them quit. So
at the same time they both made up their minds to quit, but
didn't tell the other so it would be a surprise. To quit
this agency your death had to be faked, that way most people
in the agency did not know if you died or quit. So they
each thought the other died in the same accident. While my
mom, pregnant and now alone, settled in Chicago to raise me,
his father went to Los Angeles where he met and married
Evan's mom. Now sixteen years later they found each other
because one of the FBI agents who knew they had both faked
their death was dying of old age and he did not want to die
with such a secret on his chest.
As Evan was telling his "story" (the biggest bag of
lies I had ever heard), one by one the people from the
popular table headed to our table. While the popular table
is a small circle table that seats around six, my table was
a big rectangular one that seats about twelve so people from
other tables started heading there too. They all listened
in awe of Evan. I too was slightly enthralled by his story
telling abilities, even though I knew he was lying. His
movements and expressions very much moved the room, there
was something unnatural about that, but I seemed to be the
only one noticing. With all the attention focused on Evan,
I did not mind being surrounded by people. It was quite
nice.
Eventually gym happened. Gym is my last class of the
day, so I can fortunately crawl home after being utterly
humiliated. Evan was already in his uniform when I got to
the locker room. It was the first time I had ever seen
something other than black or silver touch his flesh. Our
school colors are gold and burgundy, and we aren't allowed
to wear any jewelry in gym so even Evan's ear ring was gone.
As I was changing he said, "I look like a total dweeb, don't
I?"
I replied, "Yes, very much so."
He laughed and playfully pushed me and I bumped back
against him. I usually did not warm up to people that
quickly. It usually took months for me to joke around with
someone like I was joking around with Evan but he had that
effect on me. I felt like I could be myself and that he
would accept me. I never had such an easy time putting my
guard down.
Gym is segregated, all the boys together and all the
girls together. That way the girls can do stupid stuff like
aerobics and the boys can do stupid stuff like basketball.
Being in no way athletic I hated gym with a passion. I won't
even mention the constant ass beatings I am forced to take
in the name of "sportsmanship". Well today was wrestling, I
so hate wrestling. I am always picked to give an example to
the class; I usually just fall in seconds to get it over
with. The bad part is the repeated beating I get afterwards
when he teams us up and tells us to pin each other for an
hour.
I was surprised when Coach Wilson asked Evan to stand
up instead on me. I silently pitied Evan when Coach then
called Big Mike to be his "partner". Big Mike was as big as
he was stupid, Evan was in trouble. The coach told them to
show the class how it is done, winking at Mike. Evan said,
"One second, let me get this straight, you want me to roll
around on a mat with this guy and try to get on top of him
while you guys watch?"
The coach stood in front of Evan and said, "Yes, do you
have a problem with that Caligo?"
Evan stood at attention and said in a very military
fashion, "Sir, no, sir! I just wanted to make sure I got the
rules right," then stiffly saluted the coach. At this point
the class was quietly laughing at Evan for being so silly.
Evan just stood there in a half wrestling stance as Big Mike
came charging toward him. When Mike got to him, Evan moved
out the way like a bullfighter throwing Mike on the ground
about five feet away from the mat. Then to make things
worst, Evan sat on Mike, crossed his arms and looked at the
coach with wide eyes and asked, "Did I win? Did I win?"
At this point the whole class was falling down
laughing. The coach glared at Evan and said, "Get out of my
gym Caligo!" Since Mike did not want to wrestle after
getting laughed at by the whole class I got partnered with
Brad. Having Brad on top of me over and over for an hour
was well worth the pounding I took. Evan was waiting for me
in the locker room when gym let out; I took my shower
quicker than usual so he would not have to wait long.
I usually took the bus home, but since Evan has a car I
just rode with him. I was quiet in the car because I was
considering telling Evan something I had never told anyone.
I was scared but I felt like I could tell him anything.
"Um.Evan, you know Brad Anderson?"
"The captain of the football team, right?"
"Yeah, I have the biggest crush on him."
He laughed a little and said, "That was obvious, you
were drooling every time he walked up to us."
I got defensive, "No, I wasn't."
"Yes, you were."
"No, I wasn't!"
"Okay, if you insist you weren't, then you weren't, but
really, you were."
I busted up laughing, "Maybe a bit, do you think anyone
else noticed?"
"Nah, mortals tend to be dense."
"Mortals? Aren't we mortals?"
"In a way, but we keep coming back. You don't remember
ANY of your past lives?"
"No, am I supposed to?"
Evan looked at me a bit concerned. "Parker you are four
thousand years old!" He turned back to the road and said, "I
wouldn't worry about it too much, you usually don't remember
much about your past lives. That is why you keep that
stupid journal."
"You know about my journal?"
"Yeah, you have had it for centuries. You have only
had that coat for a few decades though," pointing to my
black overcoat.
"But I just got this stuff a couple days ago and there
was nothing in the journal."
"Parker, you have filled that journal a hundred times
over, you just can't see what you wrote."
"How do I see it?"
"You have to want to. Do you remember what happened the
night before yesterday?"
"No. Do you know?"
"Yes, I dreamed of you. It is rare for harbingers to
be connected like that but we have been very close for four
millennium. So I was not too surprised."
"Harbingers?"
"Another name for us, I don't like "witches" or
"warlocks", it sounds to Halloweenish."
"I was born on Halloween. So what happened that night I
can't remember?"
"When you are ready to remember, you will."
"So what are you going to teach me today?"
"Teach you? This isn't Harry Potter; I am not going to
teach you anything. I am going to go home and start reading
Hamlet for english tomorrow."
"Well if you aren't going to teach me, then how will I
learn witchcraft?"
"The craft is not something you learn Parker, it's
already inside you. Most things you can do, you won't need
my help for and the things you will need help for are world
altering. Honestly, I am just here to make sure no keepers
kill you before you grow to understand your powers."
"Keepers?"
"The witches that don't like us, two of them were
trying to destroy you when you blacked out."
Our conversation was cut short by the fact that we got
home. Evan did as he said he was and began reading in the
living room. I came up here and started writing. I am
currently staring at a pencil trying to get it to float. I
am having no success.
January 26, 2000
Evan has become an everyday part of my life. We are
the closest of friends and mom just loves him. Speaking of
friends, I am one of the most popular people in school now.
People beg to be my partner for projects. Any table I sit
at is now the popular table. I have tons of friends
including Brad. My social anxiety issues have almost
completely faded though I am still a bit shy around people I
don't know. I am happier than I have ever been. But there
is something bothering me, there has been no magic since
Evan transported here. We haven't talked about it anymore,
nor have we done any. That stupid pencil hasn't moved an
inch and I have been trying to make it move for weeks.
January 29, 2000
Yesterday, I brought up my concerns about my magic
learning progression being so slow. Evan looked at me like
I was nuts. "You really think you are as great as everyone
thinks you are?"
I was confused, "Well, I thought they liked me because
I hung out with you."
"They like you because you are casting an area presence
spell."
"Huh? Why hadn't I done this before?"
"At first you wanted them all to ignore you, so they
did. Now you want them to adore you, so they do."
"Is that why I like you?"
"No, I am really that charming. My area spells usually
don't affect you, but they might affect you now because you
understand so little about the nature of magic. Area spells
usually aren't cast on purpose. It is basically the world
bending to our will; it's hard to control one's will. "
"But I have been trying to float a pencil for weeks now
and it didn't work."
"Telekinesis is a keeper power not a harbinger power."
"Well, what are harbinger powers so I will know what to
concentrate on?"
"Harbingers can bend the will of people, they can
teleport, they can change form, they can remember past
lives, they can set things on fire with their mind and a lot
of other stuff."
"What about keepers?"
"They can read minds, they have telekinesis, they can
heal, they can change form, they can see the future and some
other stuff."
"It seems like the keepers got the better deal."
"I wouldn't say that. Let's go upstairs and try
something with your journal."
So we came up here and Evan told me to open my journal
with the intention of reading an entry from a past life. I
tried like three times getting blank pages. Evan told me to
not try as hard, to just kind of want it to be a past entry,
the same way I kind of wanted my coat not to burn that first
night.
I tried a fourth time and the most amazing thing
happened. I wasn't reading a page, I was in a memory. I was
me, but I wasn't me. I looked different, but I knew this
was my body and I was comfortable with it. I had a
different life, but it seemed like my life at the same time
it wasn't. It is very hard to explain how it felt to be in
a reality that I knew wasn't mine, but felt like it was
mine. I was in Athens; I was sixteen just like I am now,
but I was much more muscular. I was covered in oil and
standing in a pit. Oh great! Even in Ancient Greece I
couldn't avoid gym! Across from me was Evan, but he looked
nothing like Evan, he didn't even have the same name, but I
knew he was Evan. In this time he was my cousin not my
brother. And at that moment he was my opponent. We wrestled
for what felt like forever. I wanted this to be over so I
could go listen to Socrates, he said the oddest things, they
really got me thinking and I loved arguing with him (I
argued with Socrates!). But I was not going to let my cousin
win just to get out of there; that was until he grabbed my
nuts when the teacher wasn't looking. That gave him enough
leverage to get me to the ground. I did not care enough to
tell the teacher he cheated, I was ready to go. I would get
him later.
I came out of the memory like I was waking up. I
looked at Evan and I was glaring. "I did get you back for
that, right?" Evan fell back on my bed laughing. His
laughter was enchanting.
"I have no idea what you just saw, but I am sure you
have avenged the injustice I did you a thousand times over
by now as is the nature of our relationship." I had a
feeling he was right. "I am about to get ready for Rebecca's
party tonight, you coming?"
Rebecca is a senior, one of my many new friends and she
is having a slumber party tonight for ten of her closest
friends while her parents are out of town. I explained all
this to mom and she is still letting us go. I think it's
because she trust that Evan will protect me or she is so
happy that I have friends now she doesn't care what I have
to do to keep them as long as I do. I wish I had that mind
reading power. Hey, maybe I "willed" her into letting us
go, whatever the case, I was definitely going. "Do you
really think I would miss the chance to sleep under the same
roof as Brad?"
"Good point," Evan said as he headed off to his room to
pack and overnight bag. I did the same.
The party was great. Rebecca and some friends cooked
us a dinner and it was the greatest chicken I had ever
tasted, sure I am used to cafeteria food, but it was really
good chicken. Then there was dancing and the consumption of
a few wine coolers, no hard liquor. Then we all cuddled up
on the couch and in front of it to watch a movie. Then came
the best part, Truth or Dare. It started off pretty gentle,
a few confessions of crushes, a little kissing, and a little
flashing. I picked truth every time and got to answer "no"
to a lot of stuff, having done nothing. Evan picked dare
every time and was fully participating in the kissing and
flashing. Then it happened. Rebecca rolled six. We counted
six over and that was me. She looked at me and said "truth
or dare?" I stuck with my nice safe "truth." She asked, "Who
in this room would you most like to have sex with?"
I thought about lying and picking a girl, I might have
had Evan not been here or had not known the truth. It's
harder to lie in front of someone who knows you are lying.
So I muttered out "Brad." The room was dead silent, no one
moved. Everyone was looking at me with their mouth agape.
Evan ended the awkward silence by telling me to roll.
The game continued on normally for awhile until Sarah
rolled a two and got Brad. Brad asked for a dare and Sarah
said, "I dare you to kiss Parker, with your tongue, for
thirty seconds." God I love Sarah, I must remember to so
something nice for her some day. There was some whispering
before the room went silent to see Brad's reply. He shrugged
and crawled over to me; we were sitting in a circle on the
floor. I got up on my knees and we were face to face. This
was going to be my first kiss and my heart was pounding.
Brad wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me up
against him. As a reflex I put my arms around his neck. He
tilted his head and gently kisses me on the lips, and then
he did it again, this time for longer. When he tried parting
my lips; I happily submitted. I was in heaven. All I could
feel was his tongue in my mouth, his hand grabbing my butt
and his other rubbing my back. Nothing else mattered; I
could live in this state forever and be happy. I barely
noticed the counting and I didn't notice when it stopped. I
did notice the comments like, "Wow! They are really getting
into that!" and "Okay, you can stop now!" but I didn't care.
If he wasn't stopping, I sure as hell wasn't. He broke our
kiss, leaving me with my eyes closed still remembering. He
sat back down like nothing had happened and rolled for his
turn.
It took all my strength to act like nothing happened
the next day. I am not sure if everyone else was acting
like nothing happened because it wasn't a big deal or
because I wanted them to feel like it wasn't a big deal.
Knowing I could subconsciously control people was really
getting to me, but then I thought, who cares if they just
don't care or if I made them not care. The result is still
the same and it's not like the ability to control them will
go away. That is when I got an idea about Brad; I waited
until the ride home with Evan to ask him about it. "Evan can
I make someone love me?"
"Everything you have ever seen about magic has one
rule; magic can't make a person love you. No harbinger can
do that."
"Oh." I was saddened by news I couldn't just make Brad
love me.
"However, everything you have ever seen about magic is
wrong on this regard; two harbingers and a spell can do it."
Evan was slyly smiling at me. He worded his first answer so
I would be disappointed for his amusement.
"Really?" I asked, very excited by the idea of doing a
spell.
"Don't you get it Parker? The world is our play thing;
it has been since the beginning of time."
I was just starting to understand what he meant.
January 31, 2000
Where does one go to get supplies for world altering
spells? The local grocery store! I was expecting some cool
secret store and all I get is grocery shopping. I don't
understand why but vegetable oil is one of the most used
items in spell casting today. We bought a lot of odd
things, spices and stuff.
Then we went back home, straight to Evan's room, where
we closed and locked the door. Evan's face got real serious
as he said something I didn't understand but was used to
hearing, one of those past life things I guess. In front of
him, floating in the air was a giant old book. It had
Caligo written on the cover in some lost language that I
could not understand, but I knew what it said anyway. I
felt a deep respect for the book and I understood why Evan's
temperament changed when he summoned it. I stood behind him
while he opened the book. "Parker, this is the family book;
it contains every secret ever known by a Caligo, it unites
us and gives us strength. It's the most powerful enchanted
item I have ever seen."
"Enchanted like my journal and coat?" I asked.
"Those are only tinker toys compared to this bro, you
made those enchanted objects on your own, it took hundreds
of Caligo harbingers to create this, it is stored hundreds
of feet underground and can only be summoned by someone with
Caligo blood."
"Well what happens if two Caligo summon it at the same
time?"
"It goes to the one it deems most worthy. This isn't
your everyday piece of literature. It makes decisions; it
decides what you are ready to know and only tells you that
much."
"Is that why I can and can't read it at the same time?"
"Yup."
As Evan opened the book on the first page was the love
spell. It was written as a recipe. While Evan began mixing
the stuff, I started flipping through the pages of the book.
I could read the titles of a lot of the stuff but not the
actual spell, even though they were written in the same
language. But I understood what Evan meant; the book was
only telling me what I needed to know. I did not really
understand what a harbinger could do until now. We are the
children of chaos. We can cause natural disasters. We can
change the opinions of millions of people. We can destroy a
keeper. None of those things could be done by a single
harbinger, but I was getting a better idea of our abilities
and purpose. Contained within the pages was the history of
the entire Caligo family.
A long time ago, witches and warlocks' power was
limited. Then as time passed, harbingers realized that if
they did a certain thing on a certain day with other
harbingers, things would happen. My ancestors, me included
I guess, basically invented magic as time passed. I even
found out about gods in the book. Spells only work because
a number of harbingers are appealing to a certain god. If
that god likes you, he or she might grant your request, and
alter the world for you. Each family has a god that they
are most in tune with, Erebus, the god of chaos, was the
Caligo family god and the one we were appealing to for this
spell.
After everything was set up, Evan asked for a picture
of Brad. I took one out of my freshman year book. He
placed it in the oily concoction and we held hands, each
sitting on one side of the "cauldron". Evan began chanting
like he was in a trance. Before I could get freaked out
about it, I began chanting too. It was like I wasn't in my
body anymore. I felt like I was floating above myself
watching myself chant. Then suddenly the cauldron burst
into flames, Evan and I were thrown back. My spirit was
snatched back into my body as I lay against the wall, hurt
and confused. Evan asked me, "Did you do that?"
"No." I mumbled as I scrapped myself off the floor.
"Good. That means it worked."
"That was a success? What does failing look like?"
"If we failed, either nothing would have happened or we
would be on our way to our next life."
"We could have died?"
"Well, not for a little spell like this one."
We cleaned up the mess in Evan's bedroom. Both of us
were drained after the spell, so we went to bed early. I
can not wait to go back to school tomorrow and see Brad.
February 3, 2000
Well, at first I could not tell if the spell worked.
Brad seemed the same, but more distant than usual. I mean
he hung out with me and Evan, he even ate lunch with us, but
there was something.wrong. He wasn't as close to me as he
used to be after we became friends. For a minute I was
afraid that Evan was wrong and the spell had backfired.
Then it happened. Brad asked if he could be my partner
on the upcoming biology project. I told him sure and
invited him home with me to work on it. So there we were,
alone in my room, sitting in front of the computer searching
websites for a topic. At first it started with his leg
rubbing against mine. I didn't say a thing, I actually
froze completely I was so nervous. Then he leaned in
closer, our faces were so close I could feel his breath. I
figured he was about to try to kiss me, so I turned to face
him. He licked his lips, when I was sure he was about to
kiss me, he stands up and walks across the room! Then he
asks me, "Parker, remember when we were playing dare?"
"Yes." I answered as I got up and moved to the bed.
"Did you mean what you said? About sleeping with me?"
"Yes." With that he walked up to me, lifted me off the
bed and kissed me. It was so completely passionate I
thought I would die. We lay on the bed, next to each other,
just kissing and touching. It was so perfect. I decided to
take things further, so I moved his hand from my back to my
crotch. Brad jumped up like waking from a dream. He
grabbed all his stuff and ran to the door mumbling something
about being sorry and having to leave. I ran after him but
he was too fast.
As I got half way down the stairs I heard Evan
laughing. I walked up to him and asked what went wrong.
Evan put down his book and looked up at me. "Nothing did,"
he answered, "Brad Anderson is very much in love with you."
"Then why did he run out like that?"
"Well, we didn't make him gay or anything..just in love
with you."
"Can we fix that?"
"Don't worry, he will give in to his desires soon
enough. All he can think about is you. He can't sleep
without dreaming about you. He can't eat without thinking
how much more fun he would be having if you were eating with
him. If he watches a movie, he wishes you were watching it
with him. He only knows happiness when he is with you and
he can't quite put his finger on why."
As Evan spoke, I got this strange feeling. It was kind
of like a memory, but it wasn't clear. I just knew, the
same way I knew I was a warlock when my mom told me. "I
casted this spell on you, didn't I?"
"Yes, a long time ago."
"What happened?"
"You felt guilty and told me what you had done. I got
so pissed I killed you. Then I was so upset my beloved was
dead that I killed myself." Evan picked up his book and
began reading again.
"So it went that well, huh?"
"Yup."
"And you let me cast it again."
"Yup."
"Why?"
"You wanted too."
"Why didn't you tell me about last time?"
Evan shrugged.
"Can the spell be broken?"
"Nope."
"Why not?"
"You asked a god to alter the balance of the world.
There is no going back and saying, `I made a mistake. Could
you please put things back the way they were?'"
I was so afraid I had destroyed my poor Brad that I
borrowed Evan's car and headed straight to his house. Maybe
I should have told Evan that I had no idea how to drive a
stick shift, but hey, that ass failed to tell me about how
the love spell could end up, so I figured we were even.
When Brad answered the door he started apologizing to
me again. I swore that it was okay and asked if I could
come in. He let me in and I headed towards the den. I had
been over Brad's house quite a few times since we had become
friends and the den was where people hung out. He handed me
a Pepsi and sat down next to me. We both sat in silence for
a moment nursing our pops until I finally said, "I bet you
are really confused."
"Yeah. I am sorry."
"It's okay. I understand."
"No, you don't. I'm not gay."
"I know."
"I've never felt like this about another guy."
"I know. It's okay. You don't have to do anything with
me if you don't want to."
"The thing is I do. I really really do and that that
is freaking me out." As he was saying this he began stroking
the hair above my ear. I was staring forward out into
space, while I could feel his eyes on me, staring at me
lovingly. It was hard resisting him, even if it was for his
own good. I was starting to get aroused just from him
touching my hair. Then he grabbed the back of my neck,
turned my head and began kissing me. His actions were
urgent and demanding and I was too shocked to even think
about stopping him. He pushed me down on the couch and
began pulling off his clothes, then mine. There I was
naked, in Brad Anderson's den with Brad Anderson naked on
top of me. He was kissing me so firmly and passionately,
our grinding was causing us to sweat. Then he lifted my
legs and I knew what he was planning to do. For a moment I
was afraid that is was going to hurt, but when he entered
me, it didn't. We were not having sex. He was fucking me.
It was like this was his way of punishing me for his
feelings. His eyes were so piercing, he was taking exactly
what he wanted and there was no way I was going to stop him.
Not that I wanted to, this was everything I had ever hoped
for and more. He finally came inside me and then collapsed,
exhausted and spent. When he climbed off me, we both went
straight for our clothes. I said something about needing to
head home because it was late. He walked me to the door and
kissed me goodbye.
To be continued.
