There he stood in the entrance of the tent,as I resealed the flap he only
shuffled from foot to foot.

"oh man your gonna have to relax man, you seem so uncomfortable"

"I'm alright" he whispered.

"well let's go up to the trailer and get some blankets."



We ran up to the trailer and got blankets.  Jesse hadn't even wore a
coat,only a thick shirt.

"your gonna freeze your ass off tonight" I smiled as we headed back to the
tent

"I'll be alright the cold doesn't bother me,besides if I get cold I'll just
take your covers" he giggled softly.

"Is that right now?"

"naw" he only whispered

"what do ya wanna do now?" I asked sitting as we entered the tent

"you must have something bad to tell me" Jesse said holding my gaze

"come here" I motioned for him sit across from me "thing is I'm just not
sure what to tell you Jesse"

"I want to know where Eddie is"

"well right now he is in a group home, infact he just got there about a
month ago"

Jesse's eyes got big but I noticed there was a sense of relief as if he had
expected something worse.

"why? what did he do"

"well umm that's the thing. Eddie's uncle and cousin did alot of bad shit
to him when he was real young. You know what I mean right?"

Jesse only nodded slowly.

"anyway his mom and step dad sent him back to that same uncle for
thanksgiving break and when they started to mess with him again he faught
back. His cousins are 3 and 4 years older than him. So he really had no
chance against them. His cousins kicked his ass pretty good and still did
what they wanted with him. After a coupla days of that shit he just ran
away, he was headed back north when he got caught shoplifting and since he
was a runaway they put him in a group home. Eddie ran away from there too.

The "powers that be" eventually tracked him down and his parents too, and
Eddie was sent back to them, which would have been all good except that his
bastard of a step dad decided that it would be a good idea if he were sent
back to his uncle, as that would straighten his ass out. Knowing that's the
reason Eddie got into trouble in the first place."

"why didn't he tell his mother about what happened?" Jesse asked with tears

"he told her the last time and she still sent him back" I had tears of my

I paused now taking a drink from my pepsi.

" This time when he got down there his uncle started hitting him with a
belt across his back, just lashing the shit out of him, he turned over a
bunch of furniture and left.

He told me he was headed back north but realized it would take forever to
walk and this was in like december, so he just got busted so he could get
takin back up here.  The first night he was home he ran away. He's been in
a coupla group homes since then, once in awhile his mom comes to sign him
out,sometimes he runs away.  The first time he came to my house I just
about shit my pants,I was in a panic I told him my folks would be in alot
of trouble if the cops found out he was there. We spent that night with him
telling me everything that happened, turns out the abuse didn't end when he

doing. My mom and dad have offered to sign him out so that we can do things
together, they even were gonna take him this week but he got into trouble

I was worn out from talking so much, and Jesse was still holding onto
me. When I looked at him he only looked back without expression. I measured

We sat like that awhile, I didn't know what else to say and Jesse was

"I still need that shower" Jesse said breaking the silence with his soft

I looked at him wide-eyed. I didn't know how he would break the silence but
that was not what I expected.

"so that's it? that's all you have to say" I was pissed. I don't know what
I expected but surely he could try harder than this.

Jesse had tears in his eyes "I'm sorry. I just don't know what to say" He
got up and was unzipping the flap of the tent.

"where are you going?" I said angrily

"I think I should go home.Your pissed and I'm just too confused to deal
with this" It was as loud as I had heard him talk all day.

I stood.

"Jesse? Please don't go" I placed my hand on his shoulder and tried to turn
him to me,but he resisted.

He continued to unzip the flap.

"Please?" I said again "I'm sorry,please don't leave me alone tonight"

"I'm sorry Alex I have to go,I'm so confused right now, please don't be
mad"

I only looked at him not knowing what to say.

So I let him leave.



I was totally exhausted by all the excitement. Just talking about Eddie
again was enough but Jesse leaving... I would never have expected that I
mean he is so meek, so timid,what the fuck was happening here?

It seemed like my whole fuckin world was upside down.

I started thinking about Kevin,and how.. even that seemed to be going into
the toilet. We never get to see each other anymore except in school. There
is so much fuckin homework and he wont miss an assignment. don't get me
wrong I respect that but damn doesn't he miss me as much as I miss him?

And this whole situation with Eddie. And now Jesse.Oh shit this was getting
to be too much.

I was mad. I was frustrated. I just wanted to cry until it all got better,I
felt so fuckin' helpless.



I lay on my sleeping bag feeling the chill, it was starting to rain now and
I listened to it beating on the roof of my tent.

I put a c.d in my stereo and re-adjusted my lantern so it wasn't in my
eyes.

I lay there lost in thought when I heard something outside.

I was sure it was Jesse,but hell he left like an hour ago, where had he
gone? oh hell who cares atleast he was back.

When I opened the tent I saw a small silouette.

"Reese?"

He stepped into the tent already soaked.

He was smiling that cheesy grin of his that said "thats right I got my way
again"

"what the fuck are you doing here?" I asked shocked.

"well when Jesse came home I decided to sneak out,I figured why not he aint
stayin there. You two must be done talking" He grinned at me like a fool
again.

"ummm o.k?" I said still stunned "your soaked what are you gonna do for
clothes?"

"I'm not cold" He said as he took his coat off "And you do have enough
blankets don't ya?"

I was still in shock that this boy snuck out of the trailer to be with me.

We sat there quietly for a minute until he broke the silence.

" So you wanna play poker or something?"

I only looked at him not really comprehending what he was saying.

"umm no Reese I'm in kinda a funky mood"

He looked at the stereo as another song came on and started to smile

"you got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere, maybe we can make a deal,
