Crystal Lake - 13

"Josh, you're going to be late!" His mom yelled from the hallway with a
firm knock on his bedroom door. "Your Dad's waiting!"

"I'm sick," Josh groaned. He rolled over, turning his back to the door.

His mom came in, walked over to the bed, and leaned down. "What's wrong,
honey?" she said softly, reaching for his forehead. "Fever?"

"Diarrhea, I been going all night."

"It looks like you've been crying!"

"My stomach really hurts," Josh said with a moan.

"Let me see." She pulled the covers down. "Roll onto your back for me." She
poked and pushed on his stomach in a few places, even reaching into his
underwear so she could push on his lower belly.

Josh was a little embarrassed, but after all it was his Mom, and she'd seen
him naked his whole life.

Apparently satisfied, she tucked him back in. "I'll get you something," she
said gently and headed for the medicine cabinet.

Josh really wasn't sick, but there was no way he was going to work if it
meant he had to be around people. If faking it meant gagging on a few
spoons of icky pink stuff, so be it.

Making a face, he swallowed the nasty goo his Mom pushed into his
mouth. She swept his hair back and checked his forehead one more time.

"I just need some sleep," he whimpered.

"Okay, I'll be back to check on you later."

* * * *

The night before had been horrible. The shock of hearing his parents
talking about whether or not he might be gay frightened Josh more than he
would have imagined. He was embarrassed his panic had caused him to
puke. After getting control of himself, Josh rinsed his mouth, dropped his
boxers and stepped into the shower. As the warm water washed over him, the
tears came back. Wiping his nose and leaning against the shower wall, he
softly cried.

Wrapping himself in a big towel, Josh made his way back to his
room. Putting on a pair of raggedy old boxers, he crawled into bed. He
curled up into a ball and pulled the sheet over his head. Sleep came, but
it was much, much later.

* * * *

Now that his Mom and Dad were finally off to work, Josh was alone. He
walked into the kitchen, got the phone, and carried it to his
room. Climbing back into bed he wrapped a blanket around himself and dialed
a familiar number.

"Trav? It's me. We've got to talk! Can you come over?" Josh said softly.

"You sound weird, is everything alright?"

"Just come over? Please?" Josh's voice was trembling.

"What's wrong?" Travis said, sounding alarmed.

"I need to see you, it's my mom and Dad, hurry, okay?" Josh choked, and
then started crying.

"I'm on my way," Trav said hurriedly, "Josh, whatever it is, its going to
be alright! I promise!"

"Hurry, huh?"

* * * *

When Travis came through the door, he saw Josh sitting on the couch in the
living room in just some beat up old boxers, with a light blanket wrapped
around him. He looked terrible, his eyes were red, and his face was
streaked with tears.

"Josh," Travis said heading straight for him. "You look like shit! What's
wrong?"

"It's my Mom and Dad. They were talking about us last night. Mom's noticed
how we look at each other, and she thinks there's something going on. She
even said that she's noticed I don't talk about girls. She practically said
I was gay. Dad told her that I'm not like that!"

Josh paused for a moment.

"I think they know, Trav, or at least they're wondering. I'm so scared!" he
whispered, tears coming back to his eyes.

Travis sat down on the floor in front of Josh and tenderly pulled him into
his lap. Wrapping his arms around the blanket he cuddled Josh and rocked
him slowly.

"It's going to be alright!" he whispered as he held Josh close. Josh's
tears flowed and there was an occasional deep sob.

"They're gonna hate me!" Josh cried softly as Travis pushed the hair away
from his eyes. "I just know it!"

"No, they're not," Travis said softly. "Besides, I won't let anything bad
happen to you," Travis continued, suddenly feeling a need to protect his
boyfriend. Josh's tears slowed, "I'm so scared," He whispered.

Travis continued to rock him tenderly. "We'll work it out."

Josh suddenly turned and put his arms around Travis's neck, the blanket
fell away, and Josh held on tight. Travis hugged the nearly naked boy.

"I love you so much," Josh whispered as tears streamed down his cheeks.

Trav's eyes grew moist. "You've never said that to me," he choked, and he
too started to cry.

The boys held each other like never before.

* * * *

It was at that very moment the door opened and Josh's Dad walked in,
unbuttoning his mud spattered shirt. "What the.."

Josh and Trav turned, their arms still tightly wrapped around each other

Surprised and embarrassed, Josh stammered, "Dad!"

Mr. Danielson stood in the doorway taking it all in. Josh thought it must
look bad to see his son in torn boxers, his stuff practically hanging out,
sitting in another boy's lap, hugging.

"Ah, I slipped and landed in some mud," he said, stunned.

Josh looked at Trav and unwrapped himself from his boyfriend. He stood up.

"Dad.." Josh started to say, but then couldn't find words.

"Travis, I think you better head home," his Dad said.

Josh gave Trav a frightened look.

"Whatever you need to say, you need to say to both of us," Travis said
softly.

"What?" Mr. Danielson said, growing red in the face.

"Josh is scared. I'm not going to leave him alone right now."

"You little shit; I said it's time for you to go home!"

Trav stepped in front of Josh, "No," he continued in his soft voice, "I'm
not going to leave, and you're not going to haul him out back and smack
him."

Josh peeked from behind Trav and saw that the veins on his Dad's neck had
started to throb.

"What I do with my son is none of your business. Now get the hell out!"

Trav didn't move. He gave Josh's Dad a determined stare.

"So it's true. You turned my son gay," Mr. Danielson said softly.

"Travis didn't do anything, Dad," Josh spoke up.

"The hell he did. You were a good boy until he came along!"

Josh lightly moved Trav to the side.

"Travis is the best friend that I've ever had," Josh said, his lower lip
trembling. "You can't choose who you're going like. You just do!"

The two stared at one another for a long minute. Josh was scared, but he
knew he couldn't back down. This was too important. Trav was too
important. Both seemed to be waiting to see who would blink, a test of
wills.

"I can't deal with this right now. I have work to do," Mr. Danielson
finally said, shaking his head. "And you better be gone when I get back!"
he said, staring at Trav.

* * * *

The boys stood in the living room until Mr. Danielson left the house,
pulling on a clean shirt as he walked through the door.

"We'll deal with this later!" he called over his shoulder and the guys
looked at one another.

"You can't stay here!" Travis said, glaring at the now empty doorway.

"I live here." Josh said softly.

"Come over to my place for a while; give your Dad some time to settle
down."

Josh thought for a moment, "Yeah, maybe that's a good idea."

Josh went to his room, pulled on some jeans, a T-shirt, socks and shoes,
and then packed his backpack with a few things.

"Your Dad's down by the dock," Trav said, glancing out the window. Turning
back to Josh, he gave him a worried look.

"We'll take the four wheeler," Josh said quickly.

Trav nodded.

Josh wrote a quick note and left it on the kitchen table.

	Mom and Dad,

I'm sorry that I'm such a disappointment to you. I guess I better
go away for a while. Travis said I can stay at his place. Please don't hate
me!

	Love, Josh.

Closing the door behind them, the boys quickly headed for the ATV. A few
minutes later they were on the lake trail and heading back to Trav's place.

The contrast between Josh's parents and Trav's couldn't have been more
dramatic. Sitting on the couch in the Cullen's house, Trav had held Josh's
hand and rather boldly said, "Well, I don't know if you're ready for this,
but here goes. I think I'm gay."

Trav's Mom and Dad exchanged a knowing look.

"And Josh is your boyfriend?" his Mom asked.

Trav bit his lip, and then nodded.

"Well, it's not like we haven't been expecting this," his mother smiled
tenderly.

"What?" Trav asked in surprise.

"Travis, we've thought you might be gay for several years now," his Dad
laughed. "As we watched you grow up, there were lots of signs. I mean, you
almost never talked about girls, and the way you looked at some of the
guys, well..." he laughed again.

"But.." Trav sputtered.

His Mom walked over to the couch, leaned down and gave her son a hug and a
soft kiss on the cheek. "Whoever, or whatever you are, we love you just the
same. It doesn't matter," she whispered in his ear and smiled. "And we're
so glad you're his friend!" she said to Josh, and gave him a hug too.

The boys looked at each other stunned.

"Travis, sometimes things can be tough to understand or maybe, for some, to
accept. But, we'll always support you, no matter what," his Dad said
softly.

Josh started crying. "I wish my folks were like you guys," he whispered.

Trav reached for him, and the boys hugged.

* * * *

The boys took a long walk and talked about how differently their families
had reacted to the news. It was maybe two hours later when they got back to
the house.

"We'll be in my room!" Travis called out as they headed toward that part of
the house.

Josh watched Trav and his Dad exchange a look. He knew Trav was silently
asking if it was okay.

His Dad nodded. Nothing was said.

* * * *

It was late in the afternoon when there was a knock on the bedroom door.

"Come in!" Trav yelled as he and Josh lay on the floor playing a video
game.

"Josh, your mother called," Mr. Cullen said gently, "She asked if it would
be all right to come and see you."

The boys looked at one another.

"I told her yes!"

Josh nodded. "Thanks," he said softly.

* * * *

It wasn't an easy few minutes. Josh had asked both Travis and his Mom and
Dad to stay in the room when he met with his Mom. Her eyes were red, it was
clear she had been crying.

"Josh, honey," she started, "This is really hard for your Dad and
me. "Don't misunderstand; we love you so, so much! But, well, there are
some things we don't feel are right."

Trav made a movement as if he was going to speak. Josh squeezed his hand,
silently telling him, "Let her finish.."

Wringing her hands, Mrs. Danielson looked at Josh. "Your Dad and I talked
for a long time. It finally comes down to one thing. We love you, honey. No
matter what!"

Josh whispered, as tears came. "I won't change my mind or anything like
that!"

"We know," his mom cried.

They looked at one another. Josh saw there was love there, but he also
sensed a deep hurt.

"Your Dad's going to need some time. But, he told me I should tell you,
you'll always be his son, and he won't love you any less." She sobbed.

Josh nodded.

"Travis, I'm sure you're a good boy. But, it would be a good idea if you
didn't come over to see Josh. At least for a while."

Both Josh and Travis looked at one another in alarm.

"He's my boyfriend, Mom!" Josh said firmly, holding Trav's hand.

Mrs. Danielson nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Just not at our
house?" She said with a pleading look. "Please?"

"Can I see him here?" Josh sobbed.

"I guess that would be up to his folks," his mom said.

Trav's Dad seemed to be the only one in the room not crying. "Josh will
always be welcome here," he said softly.

It seemed as if all had been said, at least for the moment.

"Time for you to come home!" Mrs. Danielson said as she wiped her face with
a tissue.

Trav looked at Josh. "You can stay here tonight!" he said firmly,
apparently he wasn't worried about whether or not his folks would agree.

"No," Josh said softly, "Thanks anyway."

* * * *

Late that night, Travis was in bed, looking up at the skylight, when his
Dad came to the door again.

"It's late, you need to get some sleep," his Dad said with a tender smile.

"Yeah, I know."

His Dad gave him a slightly more serious look. "Do we need to talk about
how to take care of yourself and stay healthy?"

Travis laughed, "Are you talking about sex?"

His Dad nodded.

Travis rolled his eyes, "They teach all that in school!" he giggled.

"Just being a Dad," Mr. Cullen laughed, "Its part of my job."

Travis nodded, "Thanks Dad," he said softly, for everything.

His Dad nodded.

It seemed to Travis as if this was a special moment, and he really didn't
want it to end, but he knew it would.

"Oh," he laughed, "There is one thing though, if you really wanted to
help?"

His Dad grinned, "What?"

"Josh and I might need someone to go shopping for us, for some, ah,
things."

"Leave a note on my desk," his Dad laughed, "I don't want you to embarrass
your mother by asking." he smiled and quietly closed the door.

* * * *

Lying in his own bed, Josh ran the days events over in his mind. Seeing his
Dad for the first time after their fight was tough. His stomach turned
over, and he felt almost like he had the night before.

Surprisingly, his Dad had just walked up to him, wrapped his arms around
him in a hug, and held him.

They never did say a word. Josh's tears and his Dad's strong arms around
him holding him close seemed to send a message to each, "we'll get through
this."

As Josh closed his eyes, he sighed. "I hope the worst is over."

Josh heard the phone ring and a short time later his Mom was at the
door. "It's for you."

"How ya doing, Josh?" Travis asked softly.

"Okay."

"And your Dad?"

"That's okay too."

"The stars are awesome tonight!" Travis whispered.

"I wish I was there to see them," Josh sighed.

"Joshie?"

"Yeah?"

"I couldn't go to sleep without hearing your voice."

Josh couldn't say anything; he was close to tears.

"You still there?" Trav asked.

"Yeah."

"I love you," Trav whispered.

The tears came. Josh knew he had finally found what he had been looking
for.
