EDDIE AND THE AXEMAN

eddie and i were inseperable, so it only made sense that when mom and dad
decided to drag me along on one of their weeklong camping/fishing trips,
naturally eddie would have to go too.

we always stayed at a public campsite,you know the ones where you hook up a
camper to the electric outlet and use terms like roughing it.

eddie and i could pitch a tent down the hill from the camper, so atleast we
had a bit of freedom, i hate fishing, eddie doesn't seem to mind it too bad
he'll atleast go once in awhile.

eddie and i were always finding new ways to test the boundaries as well, if
we werent supposed to do it you can bet we would.

eddie was exactly 51 weeks older than me. meaning i was 13 and his 14th
birthday was a week after mine. He was several inches shorter than me so
most people assumed i was the older one,bright red hair that just hung
there with no particular style, and the same dark brown eyes as me. I on

curtain you couldn't reach it to close it back without walking out of the

The campsite wasn't secluded by no means,about 100 yards away from our tent
was a basketball court, a tennis court and a volleyball net.to the left of
that was a paved road and a cicle of about 75 trailers and campers. eddie
and i were walking around the big circle when all of a sudden we could here
this woman's voice hollering,she almost sounded like a man and she wasn't
holdin nothin back talkin bout"goddamit you boys don't do nuthin round here
i ask you to gather wood and this is all you get,i ain't doin everything
around here,your dad let's you get away with too much shit but not when i'm
around, i want some wood and i want you to get the rest of the stuff outta
the truck."

someone was gettin their ass reemed good,and to a coupla jack-offs like me
and eddie that was prime time entertainment.

"hey lets go watch someone get an ass chewing"he said.

so we ran over there and saw this big fat troglodyte lookin bitch bellowing

if you ever saw that movie) and there were two kids there just takin it and
doin what they were told. One was our age and the other was a bit younger.
thing is they looked so miserable that we didn't enjoy the show at all, we
kinda felt bad for them, so we just walked on.

As much as we were alike we were also very different for instance eddie
loved to swim even though he had to wear a ton of sunblock and still
couldn't stay out long for fear of gettin a nasty burn,i on the other hand
didn't care for swimming i liked to play basketball,tennis and anything
else that was competitive. i was serious as hell about winning til eddie
got there then we just fucked off,we had that effect on each other.

it was later in the evening while eddie and i were just shootin around on
the court when the two boys from earlier approached, the younger one asked
kinda meekly if they could shoot with us,i knowing no strangers said sure
if they told us their names.

"my names Reese"the younger one replied

"and this is my brother Jesse"

now i noticed out of the corner of my eye that eddie was staring pretty

eddie felt the need to explain the truth about our ages before we could

better than to ask me to go)so he was goin to bed early which meant i was

and a joint and went walkin'i got tired of luggin three beers in my pockets
so i stashed them and headed toward the circle.

i got to jesse's trailer and they were sittin outside eatin so i decided to
take a gamble and walk up,jesse's eyes got real big (i think with fear).

we went walkin toward my beer stash, jesse was afraid to drink any 'cause
he knew she would smell it on his breath.

after talkin awhile jesse said he had to get back,i asked if he wanted to
stay in the tent with me and eddie,"she wont let me, she doesn't let me do
anything" he said lookin at the ground.

"what if i go over there with you,you just ask then i'll take over"

"she'll probably get mad if i ask" he whispered

'well it's your call"

"you'll take over after i ask?"

"yeah no problem"

we started walkin' the circle (i reminded to keep back abit so she couldn't
smell the beer on my breath"

when we got there she and a man were sitting outside along with Reese

"hey Reese how's it goin?" i asked

"hey alex"he piped up

"you must be Jesse"s dad"i asked the man without hesitation "i'm alex"

"nice to meet you"he replied

"alex wants to know if i can stay in his tent with him tonight"

before they could respond i chimed in "my friend eddie and my folks are
goin fishin real early and i don't much care for fishin', so i was hopin
Jesse would hang with me in the mornin' til they get back".

before she could answer, Jesse's dad answered for her"i'm gonna need some
help in the mornin,but if you get back early i suppose that'll be alright"

before another word could be said jesse went inside to get his sleepin bag.

"can i go too"Reese said

"you got no business there,you just stay with us"the troglodyte answered.

reese was clearly hurt "maybe next time buddy" i tried to cheer him up,but

Jesse and i went to the tent to drop off the sleepin bag(and to get a
coupla more beers) before headin up to the woods to drink.

when we got to the a quiet place i offered him a beer but he was
apprehensive so i decided to smoke the joint but he wasn't to big on that
idea either.

"come on you may not get another chance for awhile"

"well thats true"he said takin the joint

when he hit it he about puked from coughin so much

"you aint never smoked before either"

"i dont really have alotta friends except Reese and he's just a kid" he
said softly "she don't really let me do anything"

'that sucks, hey we need more beer,and i kinda like to take a shower before
i crash lets head back to the tent"

we went back to the tent a grabbed a coupla beers before goin to the shower
room,

when we got there i asked "you gonna take a shower"

"i suppose so" he said
