Chapter 3 - Mixed emotions. April 2000
Tad and I shared many weekends like that over the next year. Our
adventures differed from week to week and we each portrayed so many
different people that we eventually lost count. We were kings and
explorers. We were adults and we were boys. We lived a long time ago and
we lived in the present. We were real people and were people who never
existed, except in books. No matter who we were, we were brave and daring.
We were honest and truthful. We were loved and respected. Why can't life
really be like that?
We were looking for new adventures when Mr. Driscoll suggested a set of
books that he had liked as a boy. He even went out and bought us the book
'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C. S. Lewis. It was one of the
books of the 'Chronicles of Narnia' and it was full of wonderful adventures
and strange and exotic creatures. This would lead us to a whole new set of
adventures that would consume us for the next few months. Mr. Driscoll
bought us the other books in the series, as well, and we read them all. We
had full-fledged adventures in Narnia from that time on. We would be Peter
and Edmund and we would travel around Narnia with Aslan or Mr. Tumnus the
Faun (half goat, half man) and we would battle against the White Witch and
her allies. Sometimes we'd be with Prince Caspian and fight against the
wicked King Mirax or the evil Telemarines. Later, we would travel with
King Caspian and take voyages on a ship called the Dawn Treader and sail
the sea, battling enchanted foes and sea serpents. We spent so much time
in Narnia that I had to watch myself when we weren't on one of our
adventures, to make sure that I kept myself grounded in the real world.
My birthday arrived during that time. The cook did bake me a birthday cake
and the staff gave me small gifts. The butler also gave me a large gift
that he said was from my mother but I assumed that he had purchased it out
of the household account. My mother never even came out to see me, nor did
she wish me a happy birthday. Because of her indifference, the gift from
her meant nothing to me and I didn't even open it. I put it in the closet
in my room and I left it there. I was courteous enough to thank the staff
for their gifts and I left it at that.
That weekend I was scheduled to stay over at the Driscolls' house. That
evening after dinner, Mr. Driscoll took Tad and I for a ride. When we
returned, I walked through the door and a bunch of people yelled
'surprise'. They had planned a surprise birthday party for me and
Mrs. Driscoll used the time we were gone to set up for it. Tad had even
invited a few of the other kids from our class, two girls and a boy with
whom we were friendly. They all sang 'Happy Birthday' to me and I blew out
the ten candles. I thought that I was going to cry. Mrs. Driscoll gave me
a big kiss, wished me happy birthday, and she handed me a present from her
and her husband. I hurriedly ripped the fancy paper off of it. It was a
collection of books. It included the book 'The Hobbit' and the complete
'Lord of the Rings Trilogy' by J. R. R. Tolkien. Mr. Driscoll said it
might be a little difficult for me to read yet, but he added that he would
be happy to read it to me and explain the things that I didn't understand.
I thanked him and told him we could do that on the evenings that I stayed
over. Of course, Tad would be included too. This sounded like great fun
and I was quite excited about it. I had heard about these books before,
and with that information I believed these books would be exciting and they
would add numerous new adventures for us to pursue.
I was just getting over my excitement about the books when Tad handed me
his present. I opened it quickly. It was a computerized fantasy game that
we could play on either of our computers when the weather was bad. The
other kids gave me their presents that I also opened in their presence. I
thanked everyone for their gifts and we settled down for cake and ice
cream. This was a great birthday and my 'new' family had done more for me
than I could have ever hoped. After the party I kissed Mrs. Driscoll and
thanked her and Mr. Driscoll for the wonderful time. They told me that I
was very welcome, and I went to bed with Tad. When we were alone, I gave
him a kiss and a hug and I thanked him for his gift. We were lying on his
bed when I decided to ask him a question.
"Tad, I need to ask you something and I don't want you to get mad at me.
You have to be honest and tell me what you really think." I hesitated,
trying to get my thoughts in order.
"What is it, Win? What do you want to ask me?"
"You know what it's like at my house. I hate it there and no one cares
about me. I feel really lonely and I want to have a real family like you
have. I want to be part of all of this. Would it bother you if I asked
your parents if I could call them 'mom' and 'dad'?"
Tad didn't answer me right away, but then a smile began to creep over his
face. "That would kind of make us brothers then, wouldn't it?"
I nodded 'yes', but I still gave him a verbal answer. "Yes, I guess it
would in a way. Would that bother you? Would you mind that?"
"Are you kidding? I always wished that I had a brother and I already love
you like one. Why would it bother me? I think it would be great. I know
that my parents really like you too, so I don't think that they'd mind. Do
you want to go down and ask them now?"
"No, we'll do it tomorrow. I want to tell them why I want to do this, so
they'll understand. That story will take along time to tell and it's
already late. We'll go to sleep now and I'll ask them after breakfast."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
We got into bed and we cuddled with each other until we fell asleep. We
lay on our sides, facing each other, with our arms draped across the
other's chest. We were still in that position when we awoke the next
morning. I woke up first, probably because I was so excited about what I
was going to do, and I lay there looking at Tad's face until his eyes
opened. I looked at his red hair and examined how it fell around his face.
Then, I studied his alabaster skin and observed how it wrapped around each
part of his body. I was checking out the shape of his nose when I noticed
his green eyes staring at me.
"What are you doing, Win?"
"I was just looking at you."
"Why?"
"I was just taking note of how you looked."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted to remember everything about you."
"Why?"
"You're beginning to sound like me when I was about two years old. Why?
Why? Why? My dad would always start to mock me when I asked that question
too many times in a row, kind of like you just did. He said that I did it
because of my age. What's your excuse?"
"I don't need an excuse, so why were you looking at me?"
"Because I don't ever want to forget what you look like. Sometimes I wake
up and I have trouble remembering what my dad looked like. I have to dig
out the old photo albums and look at his picture, so I can store it back
into my mind. I don't want to forget what you look like now and I want to
remember every detail even when I'm 100."
"But why?" He giggled after he said this.
"Because I love you, silly. That's why."
"So why didn't you say that in the first place?" Now we were both
laughing, so I decided to tickle him to punish him for his insolence. I
dug my fingers into his side and I worked my legs up and over his body
until I was straddling him. He was squirming and writhing all over the
bed, bucking his hips upward, trying to throw me off. I kept running my
hands all over his midsection, moving my fingers rapidly as I went. He was
laughing hysterically at this point, but I wouldn't let up. Finally, he
cried 'uncle'.
"All right. All right," he shouted up between the fits of laughter. "I
give up. You win, but you fight dirty. Now, get off of me."
"You promise that you won't start that again, with all of those 'whys'?" I
looked down at him with an air of dominance and superiority. I had
conquered my foe.
"I promise," Tad reiterated, so I got off of him and let him up.
"Come on, let's go downstairs," I told him.
He bolted for his door, stopped, and looked at me. "Why?"
I chased him down the stairs and into the kitchen. His parents were
already sitting at the table as we came flying in. They looked up,
startled, and then they grinned at each other.
"Well, what are you two up to?" Mrs. Driscoll asked. "You seem to be in
exceptionally good spirits this morning."
"Yeah, we had a good night's sleep," I told her. "But then Tad started
teasing me and I was just trying to get him back."
"You started it. You were making fun of me and then you started tickling
me."
"Whatever, " Mr. Driscoll said dryly. "You must have been in a big hurry,
though, because neither of you even took the time to get dressed." We
looked down at our bodies. We hadn't realized it before, but we were both
still in our underpants. How embarrassing, and in front of his mother,
too. We both raced back upstairs and put on some clothes before we
returned to the kitchen.
"Sorry about that," I said as we entered again. "I was so interested in
getting Tad that I forgot to put my pants on."
"And I just wanted to get away from Win," Tad added.
"That's okay, boys," Mrs. Driscoll told us. "We didn't mind. I've seen
Tad and other little boys naked before and you boys had your briefs on."
"Mom!" Tad yelled as he squirmed in his chair.
"Well, you were the ones that came down with nothing on," she said
indignantly.
"We had our underwear on," Tad retorted. "We weren't naked. Can we drop
it now?"
"Certainly, honey. What do you boys want for breakfast? Would you like
cereal, eggs, or pancakes?"
We both wanted pancakes, so Mrs. Driscoll got out the Hungry Jack pancake
mix and whipped up a batch. Tad and I both ate three pancakes and
Mrs. Driscoll looked pleased. After we finished our meal, I asked the
Driscolls if I could speak with them.
"Sure, honey. What's up?"
"I just wanted to tell you something and then I need to ask you a
question." They nodded their consent and I began my tale. I told them
about my life before my father died and I told them about what it has been
like since. I even told them about my last time with my mother. When I
looked up, Mrs. Driscoll had tears streaming down her cheeks and
Mr. Driscoll didn't look much better. I wasn't sure if I had already said
too much by exposing our family secrets.
"What is it that you wanted to ask us?" Mr. Driscoll questioned me.
"Well.I just.I don't think I can do this." I put my head down on the table
wondering why I had put myself in this position. Did I go too far, too
quickly?
"He wanted to know if he could call you 'mom' and 'dad'," Tad told them
bluntly, trying to help me out.
I sat up and stared at him, but I wasn't angry. I knew that Tad wanted
this to happen as much as I did. In his mind, that small act would make us
brothers. Why that would be any more significant than anything else we had
already done, I wasn't sure. But Tad did and he sincerely wanted his
parents to agree. I wanted it to happen so I would feel like I belonged
somewhere.
"Well, of course, dear," Mrs. Driscoll told me. "We would like that very
much and we would be honored to have you call us 'mom' and 'dad'."
"We certainly would," Mr. Driscoll added. "Why, you're such a part of this
family that I don't know why we didn't think of that earlier. I would be
proud to have another son, especially one as terrific as you. How about
you, Tad? Would you like to have a brother?"
"I certainly would and Win knows that." He was beaming from ear to ear.
"Then it's settled," Mr. Driscoll said with tremendous authority.
I thanked them all and then I thanked Tad for bailing me out when we left
the kitchen. "You would have done it yourself, eventually," Tad told me.
"I just wanted to hurry things along." I hugged him and thanked him again,
and then we went out to play.
The next couple of months were wonderful. It was like I was part of a real
family again. We still spent time at my house, but it went from every
other weekend to every third or fourth weekend. One weekend that we were
at my home, this man suddenly appeared and he went up to see my mother. I
didn't know who he was, so I asked the butler.
"He's some friend of your mama's, boy. I'm not sure, but I think that he
mentioned that they had dated before your mama married your daddy. He's
been calling and talking to her on the telephone for the past few weeks.
She must still have feeling for him because she's even been drinking a
little less since he's been in the picture. She has even invited him to
visit more often." Normally, the butler wouldn't have discussed my
mother's drinking problem with me, but I had spoken to him about it on
several occasions. I even asked him why people bought the booze for her.
He answered me honestly. He said that she pays their salaries and she
gives the orders. If one of them didn't buy it they would get fired, and
then she'd hire someone else who would buy the booze for her. Therefore,
they continued to do it, even though they didn't agree with her drinking
habits.
"How often has he been here?"
"I'm not sure, but I'd say several times. It just happened that he would
show up while you were not here. I don't think that was intentional,
though."
I thought about this information for a minute, and then I made up my mind.
I was determined now that I was going to confront this man and find out
what he was up to. A short time later, I had my chance. He showed up one
weekday, when Tad wasn't there, so I waited in the hallway for him while he
was in my mother's room. When he came out of her door and started down the
hallway, I stepped in front of him and held out my hand.
"Hello, I'm Win, Winthrop Aaron Randall IV. Who might you be?" I thought
that if I was formal I might impress him or intimidate him, even though I
was a child.
"Hello, Win. I'm Bart Sovie and I'm here to visit your mother." He wasn't
very tall for an adult and he was a little on the stocky side. His clothes
looked much too big for him and hung limply about his body. He had a high,
squeaky voice that didn't sound like it should be coming out of a man's
body, and I almost giggled each time he spoke. He certainly wasn't very
impressive physically and I hoped that what he told me would make me feel
better about his being there.
"I know that you've been calling on her and coming around recently, but I
haven't seen you before that. My mother doesn't leave the house very
often, so how did you meet her?"
"You're impertinent, aren't you? Well, if it's any of your business, I'll
tell you. We met long before you were born. I used to date your mother,
before she got married."
"I'm not impertinent, I only want to protect my mother. Why did you wait
until now to get back into her life?"
"I only found out about your father's untimely death a few months ago, at
our high school reunion. I'm divorced and I thought I should look your
mother up, to see if she was the same person that I remembered. I almost
asked her to marry me before your father did, and I thought we still might
have feeling for each other. By the way, what do you think you are
protecting her from?"
"From people who would hurt her." I hoped my insincerity didn't show
through my answer. I couldn't care less if she got hurt after everything
she had done to me, but I wanted to see who might be working their way into
my life.
"I have no intentions of hurting your mother, young man. You can rest
assured of that. I loved her once and I think that I still may."
"Does she still love you?" I asked matter-of-factly.
"I'm not sure, but I intend on finding out. That's why I'm visiting her so
often. I'm trying to get her to leave the house and go out on a date with
me. I think that I nearly have her convinced."
"You know that she drinks a lot, don't you?"
"I've heard that and I've seen some of that. She has been cutting back at
my request and I think she may still be able to get that problem under
control with a little help."
"And what about me? How would I fit into your plans?"
"That would depend on you. Would you like a new daddy, if it came to
that?"
"I don't know. I hadn't considered that possibility."
"Well, that's an honest answer. I guess I've never thought about having a
son. I didn't have any children with my wife and I've never been around
many kids. I have some friends who have children, but for the most part
they have never been a part of our social gatherings. I suppose that I
hadn't thought that far into the future and I hadn't considered that
possibility, either."
We spoke a few minutes more. Although he seemed polite and nice, I still
had my doubts about him. There was just something about this guy that made
my skin crawl when he was near me and again when he spoke to me. Maybe
everything he did and said was just too smooth and too polished to be real.
I hope that it's not just my imagination, but I think that there is
something there that I'll have to watch out for. I'm not sure what it is,
but I think that I'll know it when I see it.
