Ice Storm

Chapter 3

As we left the bedroom, and headed up the stairs, I could feel his eyes on
my back. When we got to the top of the stairs, I saw dad in the kitchen,
and said, "Hey pop, how's the roads out there?"

"Deadly, it's been sleeting out there for 4 hours, and the roads are nothing
but solid ice" he replied.

"This is Russ, I was helping him with some music for the concert next week
when the weather started getting bad, and I didn't have any way to carry him
home. We called his dad, and he said the roads were closed, and they were
only allowing emergency traffic through, and that if you didn't mind he
should stay here tonight. I told him that you wouldn't mind, and that we
would see him tomorrow, after they got the roads clear."

"Hi Russ, I'm Chuck," he said, extending his hand out to shake hand with
Russ.

"Nice to meet you Mr. Hampton," Russ said shyly, and took my fathers hand
and shook it.

"None of this Mr. garbage, my name is Chuck, Mr. Hampton is my father," dad
said, trying to put Russ at ease. "We'll see about getting you home
tomorrow, but from what they are saying on the radio, looks like the roads
will be closed most of the week. Is it too late to call your father now, or
will he still be up?"

"He will still be up, Randy told him you wouldn't be home until about 11:30,
and he asked if you didn't mind, to call him when you got in," Russ said,
his confidence building.

Dad picked up the phone and started dialing as Russ told him the number.
"Mr. Jenkins, this is Chuck Hampton, Randy's dad. Russ is here, and he's
fine. I just got home from work, and the roads are covered with ice. I
don't know if they will be cleared by tomorrow, but Russ is welcome to stay
as long as he wants. We have plenty of wood for heat, and gas for the
generator, so he is warm and safe here." he said as he was chatting freely
with Russ' father. "It's no trouble, and he is welcome to stay as long as
he likes. Do you have heat?" he asked worriedly. "Well, if you have enough
kerosene to get through tonight, that's fine, but what about tomorrow, the
electric company is saying it may be two weeks before they get all of the
electric lines fixed."

I could tell that dad was getting along well with Russ' dad, and I could
tell that he was very concerned. If it was going to be two weeks before we
got electricity, we had plenty of wood for heat and gas for the generator,
but what about Russ' father... I knew he probably wouldn't have that much
kerosene on hand, and I also knew that if that was what the power company
had already announced, that there would be no kerosene left anywhere in town
tomorrow. Mr. Jenkins asked if he could speak to Russ for a minute, so dad
handed him the phone, "Your dad wants to talk to you Russ."

"Dad, if it is going to be two weeks before they get power to Russ' house,
there isn't any way that his dad will have enough kerosene to keep warm that
long, not to mention cooking and bathing," I said quietly as Russ talked
with his father.

"I know Randy, and it is supposed to continue sleeting all night, so the
roads won't get any better tomorrow. It looks like we have a guest for
several days, at least, and maybe a couple of weeks. Is he gonna sleep with
you, or in one of the guest rooms?" dad asked, wondering how to plan things.

"He's sleeping with me for now, and probably the whole time, but what about
his father, we can't leave him there, and if the roads are just going to be
worse tomorrow, what will he do?"

"Don't worry about that, son, I just wanted to make sure that you didn't
mind Russ and his father staying here until things were OK again," he said,
relieved that we were thinking along the same lines.

"I don't mind, Russ is a great guy. I really like him, and I think it would
be wonderful to have them both here until the weather clears."

"Russ, I want to talk to your father again before he hangs up," dad said.

Russ told his father he loved him, and goodnight, and handed the phone back
to dad. "Billy, I know this is going to sound rather strange, but the roads
aren't going to get any better for several days. I can still get around in
my four-wheel drive right now, as long as I go slow, and am careful. We
have plenty of wood for heat, and gasoline for our generator, and plenty of
food, and plenty of room, so why don't I come get you, and you can stay here
until they get the power back on at your house.... No, I'm sure it's no
bother, we have plenty of everything to go around, and this way you won't
have to be worried about Russ, or yourself. I can be at your house in about
a half an hour, so why don't you get some things together, and I will come
pick you up, and you can stay here. It's only Monday, and they have already
canceled school for the rest of the week. They told us at the plant
tonight, that they were canceling shifts until further notice, and I know
most businesses are going to be closed until they get the electricity
re-established and the roads cleared.... OK, I will be there in about 30
minutes then," dad said hanging up the phone.

"Well, Russ, it looks like you and your father will be staying a here until
they get the power back on at your house. I'm going now to pick him up, you
boys can ride with me if you want," dad said, turning to us.

"Thanks, Mr., oppss, Chuck."

"Lets go get dressed, and we will go with him to pick up your dad," I said,
gently pushing Russ toward the stairs.

When we got back downstairs to my room, and had the door closed, Russ walked
over to me and hugged me, and said, "Thank you, for everything. You didn't
have to let me stay, and you certainly didn't have to invite my dad over
here."

"Hey, I like you, and I don't want your dad freezing to death. If the storm
is as bad as dad says they are predicting, that is very possible," I said,
as I slipped my shorts off, and let my dick hang loose for a minute, before
reaching for my jeans. Russ just blushed as he dropped his shorts, and
reached for the jeans that I had loaned him. "Here, you need something
warmer than a T-shirt if you are gonna be going outside in this weather," I
said, tossing him a heavy flannel shirt, and grabbing one for myself out of
my closet. "And you will need socks too," I said, crossing the room to my
dresser and grabbing two pair of heavy hunting socks and tossing one pair to
him. "And you probably won't want to wear your tennis shoes out in this...
they probably aren't dry yet anyway."

We headed back upstairs, just as dad came down from his room, and met in the
living room again. "We're ready if you are, just gotta grab some boots, and
we'll meet you in the garage," I said, noting that dad wasn't quite ready
yet. What do you want to take, the 4Runner or the Land Cruiser?" I asked,
thinking that the Land Cruiser would be better because of the extra weight.

"We'll go in the Land Cruiser, but toss the winter emergency kit in there
and the medical kits too, just in case we happen on an emergency," dad
replied. He had been in the rescue squad for 10 years, and was a certified
EMT/Paramedic, and always kept a full medical kit in the 4Runner, but had
just bought the Land Cruiser this past weekend, and didn't have everything
transferred over yet.

"OK, we'll do that, while you finish getting dressed," I replied. Russ just
looked at me kind of funny, but followed me toward the garage. In the
garage, we both slipped on pairs of my heavy hiking boots that were sitting
by the door. I reached back inside the door, to grab keys to both vehicles,
so we could start moving the equipment, and went to the back of both
vehicles and rolled down the glass. Russ just followed me, and when he saw
all of the boxes that looked like tackle boxes, I told him to start
grabbing, and get that stuff over to the Land Cruiser. We got the last of
the kits moved, as dad came out, and grabbed his hiking boots, and started
lacing them up.

"Go ahead and get the Land Cruiser started, so it will be warm, when we
leave. It's already 15 below zero out there, and is supposed to still be
dropping.

I got in the Land Cruiser, and started it up, knowing we would only be in
here a couple of more minutes, so not bothering with the exhaust hose. Russ
started to get in the back seat, and I told him we could all ride in the
front on the way to his house, and we would ride in the back on the way back
here. He slid in on the passenger's side, and after I got the engine
running, and the heat turned on, I got out, and walked around to the
passenger's door, and got in. Dad had his boots laced, and was getting in
the driver's side, as I closed the door on my side, with Russ sitting a
little bit closer to me than dad. Dad reached under the seat, and grabbed
his emergency light, and handed it to me, in case we ran into any problems.

Dad hit the button on the remote control for the garage door, and it quietly
slid upward, and dad pulled slowly out onto the already slick driveway.
Knowing that he was already in four-wheel drive, I knew we would have no
problem getting to Russ' house and back, unless there were places that we
couldn't get through because of trees that were down.

Dad drove slowly, and carefully in towards town, and we as we approached
Russ' house, we could see his father walking around inside with a
flashlight. I reached behind the seat, and grabbed the two big flashlights
that are commonly used on search and rescue missions, and handed one to dad,
and kept the other for myself as we pulled into the driveway of Russ' house.

Mr. Jenkins had seen us pull up, and was still trying to get his clothes
together, as we knocked on the front door. We could see him making his way
to the door, and when he finally opened it, we made our way into the house.
He went with Russ' father to help him carry his things, and Russ and I went
to his room, to get clothes for him. I heard dad telling Russ' father that
he should probably not expect to be back home for at least a week, possibly
two, but that dad would check on his house every time he left home. Russ
and I grabbed a weekend bag from his closet, and started getting things
together for him to stay a couple of weeks at my house. As we packed his
clothes, we shivered as we stood close together, knowing that we would share
many fun and interesting times in the days to come before he was home again.

"Do you have anything besides clothes that you want to take with you?" I
asked Russ, knowing that he would feel strange staying at my house for two
weeks, and having none of his things from home.

"Well, if you promise not to laugh..." he said, the same shy boy who had
earlier asked me about masturbation.

"I would never laugh at you Russ, I thought we had already established that
earlier when we were watching that movie before dad got home," I replied.

"Thanks," he said, reaching for an old worn teddy bear, that he had lying on
his bed. I just smiled and put the bear in with his clothes in the bag, and
zipped it up. I picked up the bag in one hand, and handed him the
flashlight, to lead the way out to the Land Cruiser. Dad and Russ' father
were just putting his things in the back of the Land Cruiser. We sat Russ'
bag in on top of his father's, and got in the back seat, as dad and his dad
went back to make sure the house was secure.

"I really can't thank you enough for all of this, Chuck," Russ' father was
saying as they got back into the Land Cruiser.

"It's no trouble, really, Billy. We have plenty of room, and plenty of
everything, and there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't join us."

We rode along listening to the news on the radio, and not saying much until
dad happened to notice a car off the road. "There's a car off of the road
up ahead, I'm going to stop and see if anyone is still in it," dad commented
to Russ and his father. I was expecting this, and once again reached behind
the seat and grabbed the flashlights.

As we pulled up next to where the car had gone off the road, dad put on his
emergency flashers, and we both got out. I opened Mr. Jenkins's door, and
reached across and grabbed the red emergency light, and stuck it on top of
the Land Cruiser, and asked him to plug it in the cigarette lighter. I
headed off to follow dad, as I saw the red light rotating. Dad was at the
side of the road, looking down the hill where the car had slid, when it went
off the road. "Grab a rope from the back, and feed me as I go down the
hill."

I went back to the Land Cruiser, and maneuvered it so that it was facing
directly toward the side of the road where dad was standing, and flipped on
the hidden lights behind the grill. It was immediately as bright as day
where dad was standing, so I rolled down the back glass, and got out to get
the rescue equipment from the back of the Land Cruiser. After I had the
necessary ropes and radio equipment, I told him to roll the glass back up,
so it would stay warm in there.
