Chapter 6

I looked on in puzzlement and some anxiety, but hearing the bell
drug me back to reality. David and I got up and brushed sand
from our pants and hands, and walked back to the class. I saw
Chris go off to the far side of the school, a couple of the 6th
graders alongside him. Guess they were in a combined class. I
made a promise to myself to look for Chris after school to find
out where I stood. Did he still want to be friends? Had he just
been using me and then decide to use me as someone to torment
and tease? It was the not knowing that was getting to me.

Got back to class and the rest of the day seem to drag. Mister
Omen was a bore and arrogant. Even made a comment how back in
HIS day a student was expected to have a handkerchief to blow
his nose, and not have to ask the teacher for a tissue. God was
an ass. I snickered at this and even imagined that he brought
his own toilet paper to wipe himself. He sure was full of it.

David did not seem to follow much, but I was able to see that he
was making some notes, or writing something. His arm hid
whatever it was. I thought I would ask him about it later. He
was nice looking, but there was an air about him that did not
draw any appeal to him. Maybe as a friend, but someone to fool
around with? Not at this time.

Finally the clock clicked and the bell rung. Noah and John, who
I had not paid any attention to, split right away, and Ann Marie
was off with a girl ,who I had overheard as Lisa, walked off
talking about some party. I got all my stuff together, and what
I needed for homework, into my backpack and walked off to where
I was told I could catch a bus. I saw David hanging out in the
open hallway, and when he saw me, stepped up. Seemed more alive
out of the class. Not all that hard to do after surviving Omen's
droning.

" Hey Charlie, umm you free to get together today? Maybe hang
out, play Atari, or ride? You seem like a nice guy and....
well.. do you? " His look of confused embarrassment, and
struggling to not make a total geek out of himself made me
smile. If Chris was going to be an asshole, I could at least
still have a friend to hang out with.

" I'm cool with that, but have to go home first and clear it
with my mom. Give me your number and I will call you,ok?" I gave
him a glance to see if that was ok with him.

His stance seemed to settle down and he nodded, He pulled a
piece of paper from his pocket and taking a pencil from his back
one, wrote down his name and number. He split the paper in two
and handed the blank one to me. " Give me yours as well. That
way we can call the other, or if I do not hear from you, can
buzz you later. "

I wrote down my own number, but had to look in my wallet first,
as I could not remember it right away. Once that was taken care
of, we put the numbers away and I moved off to the bus. The
episode with David had distracted me from looking from Chris,
and I had to get to the bus if I did not want to walk the mile
around the Post Graduate School.

( The Navel Post Graduate School, where the Navy and Marines
send officers to get advanced degrees and where some research
was done, was a large campus with its own fire and police
departments as well as dorms. It was where the old Hotel Del
Monte had stood at one time the place had been the getaway of
the rich and famous from SF and Hollywood. Officers from across
the US, as well as other countries, stayed there 2-4 years. I
was later to fully explore that place and.... well, later you
will find out. : ) )

I did try to look for Chris or even Noah on the way to the bus,
but saw no sign. Even thought to give a glimpse at the bike rack
to see if Chris's bike was there, but again struck out.
Frustrated and still apprehensive, I got on the bus and sat
down. Ann Marie was near the front and smiled and nodded, but I
was not in the mood to talk with her, or any girl, so just gave
a quick nod back and sat down.

The bus made two stops before we arrived to Oak Grove. I grabbed
my pack and once out the door, started to make my way home. I
wished I had Chris's number, but the idiot had never gave it to
me and I was not sure what apartment he lived in. Thought I
would drop my stuff off at the house, check in with Mom about
David for later, and then bike down to the laundry mat and see
if he might be about.

I waited for my sister, who I had ignored on the bus, to stop
talking with Ashley so we could go home. After the two girls
parted, I started to walk toward the house. " Have a good one
Sis? "

" Yeah, it was nice. The teacher was nice and it was good to
have Ashley in my class. You have your class with Chris? " She
asked and looked at me. Christina was not all that bad, but I
did not feel like talking to her about my day, so I just grunted
back. She shrugged her shoulders and in tandem, we walked up the
hill in silence.

The car was in, so I figured I would get to mom right away. I
unlocked the door and strode to the kitchen, where I heard my
Mom singing to a 45 of Elvis. Mom's voice is NOT all that good,
but was better then Christina's and my Mom was obviously in a
good mood. That was a nice. sign.

Seeing her, I got right to the point. " Hey Mom. " I said as I
gave her a hug. " I made a new friend at school, David, and he
wanted to get-together today. That ok? "

Mom smiled and after hugging me back, " Well nice you made a new
friend. I am happy that you are getting some new ones and
getting out, and not moping like you did when we first moved
from Minnesota. "

" Ok with me, but I want you back by 6 for supper. make sure you
do all your homework tonight as well Charlie. If something
happens, call me right away. Where does David live and will you
be at his house or somewhere else? "

" Umm Mom. I have to call him to work it all out. Had to check
in with you first you know. I will let you know as soon as I
talk with him. By the way, did Chris call at all? Never had a
chance to talk to him at school. Different classes and all. " I
tried not to let any of my being worried show.

Mom shook her head, " Sorry, he never called. You two still
friends? "

I shrugged. " I have no idea. He never called or talked to me. I
saw him briefly during lunch, but then the bell rang. I thought
I would go on a ride to look for him, then call David. I will be
back soon so in case Chris or David calls, take a message, ok? "

" Sure Charlie. Be good. "

I smiled and waved. I dropped off my pack in my room and after
grabbing a couple of cookies, got to my bike. I got on it and
started to ride out the driveway. I saw Ann Marie and Lisa just
up the street, Her house, which I had not paid any attention to
before, was a dullish grey and yellow, with some pines to screen
it. I gave her a nod as I pedaled down the hill, not wishing to
get involved with whatever word play the two girls were up to.

I made to the where Chris lived in a couple of minutes, crossing
Del Monte. I could see from the access road the edge of the
beach and beyond that, the ocean. The breeze was coming off the
water, the scent of salt and rotting kelp in the air. In the
distance I could hear the sealions on the Coast Guard Jetty and
Pier barking up a storm. I smiled a little and then looked for
Chris. He was not in the laundry mat playing pinball and looking
in the back, I did not see his bike. Frustrated, I walked my
bike to the sand to gaze at the Ocean.

Looking over a slight rise, I saw a large sailboat making its
way parallel to the beach. It was making good time in the wind
and had many sails up to get all the wind it could. Don't ask me
to name all the sails and what did what. I admired the boat, but
I did not know anything in its handling or background. I was a
landlubber, even if I was out fishing on a boat.

That thought, of fishing, triggered a memory. My Dad had talked
about going out on a party boat, to do some deep sea fishing,
but it never worked out. I had been out once, last year, but the
asshole we had gone with had focused on his own pleasure and
went too deep and never offered to help me or my dad. I had a
rotten time and never spoke to the idiot, even if he was married
to my Dad's younger aunt. But I was still wanting to try to
catch some Cod or Halibut.

I knew that there were boats off Fisherman's Wharf, so maybe I
could talk my dad into going out some weekend or even a weekday.
Something to think about anyways. I looked at my watch and saw
that it was now 4. Oops, let too much time flash by with my
search for Chris and admiring the boat and ocean.

I biked back quickly to the house to check in with my mom and if
I had not heard from David or Chris, at least call David. I was
starting to get really pissed off at Chris, What was his
problem? I vowed to find out no matter what he had to say, It
was the not knowing anything that was eating me.

I arrived back at the house and no one was there. I looked about
for a not and soon found it by the phone. Mom wrote that she and
Christina had gone shopping with Ashley and would be back around
6. Mom said to leave David's number and address if I left, and
to call if I could not be back for dinner.

Nothing about David or Chris calling, so again I was coming up
empty. I pulled David's number from my pocket and called. When I
heard an older voice announcing I had reached the Westerner
Motel, I thought I had dialed the number wrong. I apologized and
hung up. I dialed it carefully and again I got the motel. Did
David live there?

After a slight pause and thinking about this, I asked. " Umm, is
David there? "

" Yeah, hold on a sec. Nee to transfer you, " I heard the click
as I was put on hold and then a ringing of the line going
through. After two rings the phone was picked up. I heard David
say, " Hello? "

" Hey David, its Charlie. "

" Hey Charlie, glad to hear from you. Wondered if you would
call. " He seemed excited by my call, and I had a smile on my
own face. Yeap, I think David would be a cool friend after all,
even if he was pretty quiet at school.

" So you live at a Motel? "

" Yeah, my parents are the managers. That a problem? " His voice
was not aggressive, but he was making a point.

" No dude, its cool. Just threw me. Thought you might have
screwed up on the number or I was goofing up when I called the
first time and heard the man answer. " I chuckled a little at my
confusion.

David laughed a little. " That was my Dad man. He's cool. So you
want to get together? "

" Yeah, that's fine, but I have to be back by 6,. So what do you
want to do? Have me go there, meet somewhere, or just yack? " I
personally did not want to go anywhere today. I was bummed
slightly by the seemingly rejection from Chris, and not be here
when my Mom and sister came home. Plus it would be nice to see
where David lived.

" That's cool. I live off Fremont, past the freeway and the
NPGS. Where are you at. "

" Just on the other side, in Oak Grove. So what's the best way
to get there? "

David paused a second,, trying to work it out in his brain. "
Well the easiest is just to bike through the school and ride up
to Fremont that way. That way you miss all the traffic. The
school is open now, I am sure. No alerts going on today. "

" Cool. Umm give me directions to get through there, as I have
not been in there yet. " I listened as David told me what turns
to take and after writing them down, and his address I said good
bye and hung up. I copied the number and the address on the note
my mom had left and went back to my bike.

Getting to it and heading out the driveway, I immediately put on
the brakes. There walking out the store, was Chris. He was with
Noah and they had not seen me yet, putting some candy from the
paper bag into their pockets. Their bikes where leaning against
the wall. I was about to say something when Chris looked up and
saw me.
