"Quincy And That Unusual Friend Of His"

				 Chapter 6

Quincy's parents both drove him to his first day of day camp the next
morning. While Quincy dressed, Erik sat on the desk watching with a
lovestruck, puppy dog look on his face. Quincy was starting to regret what
he and Erik had done the night before. It had been fun, and a nice release
of the sexual tension that he had been feeling towards Erik since he showed
up, but he was worried that it might have changed the dynamic of their
friendship. He did not want Erik as a lover, but as a friend. He was
concerned that he might have lost that by giving in to his feelings like he
did.

The car pulled into the lot of the McLean Community Center. Soon he was
registered and was sitting in the main common area of the community center
with two counsellors and a group of thirteen other boys and girls his age
while the role was taken. Quincy had sat on a bench next to a boy who
looked close to his age. While the role was being taken it was revealed
that his name was Timothy.

The first activity was a meandering nature walk in a wooded park behind the
community center. Quincy was walking in the back of the line. The
counsellors had embarrassed him by making him stand up in front of the
group and introduce himself, so he was trying to keep to himself
inconspicuous in the back. Soon after the hike started, the Timothy kid
came to the back and started walking with him.

"So your name is Quincy?"

"All my life." Quincy said.

"What made your parents name you that?"

"They got it from a baby name book. Dad wanted to name me Noah and Mom
wanted to name me David, so they compromised."

"What does your Dad do?"

"He's a Congressman."

"Cool, I'm not supposed to say what my Dad does." Timothy then leaned over
and cupped his hand next to Quincy's ear."C-I-A" He whispered.

As they walked on Quincy looked over at Timothy. He was his exact height,
and he had straight, light brown hair that looked almost like a really
dirty blond. He had green eyes, and a round, sensitive face with a squarish
chin.

"So why did you join so late? This is the last week." Timothy asked.

"We just moved here a week ago." Quincy said.

"So what school are you going to?"

"Chesterbrook Academy."

"Really? Cool! I go to Chesterbrook! What grade?"

"Sixth. I should be starting seventh but I got left back a couple years
ago."

"Awesome! That means we'll be in the same class!"

After the walk the group returned to the community center to use the
olympic sized swimming pool. As Quincy undressed in the locker room he
quickly checked out all the other boys while they changed into their
bathing suits. As always, he was the only one who wasn't circumcised. He
turned his back to them so that no one would see his dick. When he did he
saw Timothy sit on a bench near him. Timothy had changed in one of the
toilet stalls. As Quincy pulled down his underwear he saw Timothy staring
at his uncut dick. "Great, now someone in my new school knows about it."
Quincy thought to himself. Timothy didn't say anything, though. Quincy also
noticed that he was checking the other boys out too.

After an hour of splashing around and playing in the pool, the group
returned to the locker room. Timothy changed in the toilet stall again, and
then returned to sit on the bench and stare at everyone while they
changed. Quincy wondered why he was so chicken to change out in the open
like everyone else did.

After lunch the kids were all given a choice of activities. Quincy decided
on softball. As he signed up some of the other boys came over to where he
and Timothy were standing.

"Hey, New Kid, why are you hanging around with this fag?" One of them said.

"I'm not hanging him, he's hanging around me." Quincy said.

"Yeah, this kid popped a boner in the locker room while we were changing!
He's a total homo!" Another kid laughed. Quincy and the others all turned
around and laughed at Timothy as he retreated red faced behind some potted
plants that were nearby. Quincy felt bad about having to throw Timothy
under the bus, but he couldn't risk being associated with a gay kid in his
new home.

After camp, Quincy's mom came and picked him up. When they arrived home, he
went up to his room and saw Erik waiting for him on the desk chair. After
Quincy put his stuff away, he and Erik went out the garage door to the
Williams shed and made their way down to the creek. This time, Erik lead
Quincy further up the stream. They came to an open area with houses on the
right hand side of the stream and a wooded area to the left. Erik glided
out of the water and started walking up the left bank and across a short
meadow towards the woods. When they entered the woods, they walked a short
way on a narrow, dirt path and came upon a small, still pond. The pond was
not picturesque, it was dirty and scummy and filled with leaves. It's dark
water had a peculiar, decaying smell. Erik sat on the bank and Quincy sat
next to him

"This is the Mary Butler Lemon Preserve I told you about. If you keep going
past the pond you wind up in a big open field, then there's the parking lot
and then Chesterbrook road."

"This pond is kind of nasty." Quincy said.

"Yeah, it didn't used to be. It used to be really nice. I'm not sure what
happened. Those houses didn't used to be there either." Erik said.

"Things that are cool always get messed up." Said Quincy as he threw in a
pine cone. It landed with a bloop and sent ripples out through the fetid
water.

"We used to go swimming in here. I wouldn't want to swim in this now."

"You and Aaron?"

"Yep. Me, Aaron Bailey, and Spencer Williams."

"Spencer Williams? From next door?"

"Yep. We were the Three Musketeers. We used to hang around all the time."

"So Sneak-A-Smoke is Spencer's dad?" Quincy asked. 'Sneak-A-Smoke', or
'Sneak', was a nickname that they came up with for Mr. Williams.

"Yep."

"So, you said that you used to go to that day camp that I went to today,
right?"

"Yeah. I just went for one summer."

"In 1978?"

"Yeah."

"So what year were you born in?"

Erik had to think about that for a few seconds. "1967." He finally
said. "September 2, 1967."

"Oh wow, your birthday is coming up."

"Really? I didn't know. Dates don't really mean much to me anymore."

"So you don't know what year it is now?"

"Sure. It's 1978." Erik said.

"No it's not. It's 2011." Quincy said.

Erik didn't respond, he just stared at the water. After a few minutes, he
turned to Quincy.

"So is it really my birthday soon?"

"Yeah. Today is August 22." Quincy said.

"That means my first day of school is coming up!" Erik said happily.

"Huh? Your first day of school...?"

"Yeah! I start sixth grade at Madera on my birthday! I'm really excited!
I've never had my birthday on the first day of school before!"

"Oh really..." Quincy said.

Just then a flurry of shouting and laughter and heavy footsteps could be
heard behind them, and a small group of older teenagers came barging into
the pond clearing. One of them was wearing a jacket despite the hot and
sticky weather, and he appeared to have a jug of red wine tucked under
it. There were three other teenagers as well. The one that appeared to be
the leader saw Quincy, laughed, and started walking over. Quincy stood up.

"Hey look, Guys! It looks like Kindergarten just let out!"

"Oh! I'm about to kick some nursery school ass!" The one with the wine
said.

"What are you doing here you little homo!? Did your mommy leave you in the
woods!?" Said the leader kid.

"Shut up!" Quincy said as they surrounded him.

"That's not any way to talk to your elders you little cunt!" The leader guy
said. "I'm gonna have to kick your ass for that!"

"How much money you got!?" The third kid said as he started recording the
events with a picture phone.

'Yeah, you're intruding on our spot! This is where we go to fuck your mom!
You gotta pay us a toll before we kick your ass. Empty your pockets,
fucker!" The leader kid said. The other three kids all laughed.

"I ain't got no money!" Quincy said.

"Then we're gonna kick your ass even worse, asshole!" The kid with the wine
said.

Erik calmly got up to his feet. "Don't worry, Quince. I'll take care of
it." He said right before he vanished.

The leader kid grabbed Quincy by his shirt, lifted him up, and pushed him
against a tree.

"I'm gonna saw off your balls and make you eat them you little piece of
fuck! You think I'm playing?" Quincy saw some movement down below. He
looked down and saw the leader kids shoe laces tying themselves
together. The kid then pulled a pistol out of his pocket and cocked it. "I
can shoot you right in your head and nobody will know a goddam thing. We've
shot this gun off back here a whole bunch of times and no one has even
noticed!" He then slowly put the gun up against Quincy's temple.

"Hey, Darren! Come on, Man! You're taking it too far!" Said the fourth kid.

"Shut up, Randy!" Darren snarled.

Quincy was trying not to laugh, and to act like he was scared. "P-please,
Mr. Darren, Sir! Please don't shoot me! I'll give you whatever you want!"

Just then there was a bright blue light, like a big flashbulb going off,
about thirty feet above the pond. It was immediately followed by a loud,
crackling explosion, and a sharp, ozone smell. The kids all jumped
back. The kid with the picture phone dropped it to the ground with a yell,
where it lay smoldering. The Darren kid immediately fell backwards and the
gun flew out of his hand and landed in the water. He looked down in rage
at his shoe laces that were tied together.

"Oh, I am SO going to kick your ass!" He raged as he got to his feet.

"Dude, we got to get of here! That was lightning!" The Randy kid said.

Just then the jug of wine that the one kid had exploded in his hand,
sending cheap California red wine all over his clothes. Erik then
materialized behind the leader kid and soccer kicked him in his testicles,
hard. The kid doubled over in pain, to the others puzzlement. Erik
immediately vanished and rematerialized behind the other kids one by one,
kicking all of them in the balls as hard as he could. Soon they were all
writhing in pain on the ground. The gun then rose up out of the nasty pool
of water and started dangling in the air in front of them. The Darren kid
struggled to his feet and started grabbing at it.

"Oh my God. do you see that?' The Randy kid said between coughs as he
stared at the floating gun.

"What's happening?" the wine covered kid sputtered in tears.

"Careful. You cocked it, remember?" The third kid groaned.

"Don't worry, it's not loaded." Darren grunted out as he grabbed at it
while doubled over.

The gun then loudly discharged. The kids all yelled in unison as they
jumped to their feet. They all ran towards the path except for the Darren
kid, who had literally fallen flat on his face from his shoe laces still
being tied together. As he got up the other three kids screamed in horror
as all the vegetation lining the path, most of which was poison ivy, closed
in and grabbed them like a group of angry sentries. The kids all reversed
course and ran right into the leech infested water, the Darren kid having
kicked his shoes off right before he ran in behind them in his socks. The
gun, which was still floating in the air, fired again, leaving a violent
ripple in the water right next to them. It then fired a third time in front
of them, sending the kids fleeing in panic back towards the path. A large
limb then dropped in front of them, blocking the path. The vegetation that
blocked the path beyond suddenly twisted and formed itself into the shape
of a face, and an unhuman, booming voice sounded out as though eminating
from the bowels of the earth itself.

"GET OUT!!!"

The teenagers all shrieked like a frightened group of second grade girls,
and ran full speed towards the meadow, and the stream, and the houses
beyond, not losing any speed at any point from what Quincy was able to see.

Erik reappeared as Quincy was rolling on the ground in laughter. Erik,
however, was not laughing.

"Nobody messes with you like that!" He said angrily. He then looked at the
gun and floated it over to where they were.

"Oh my God!!!" Quincy said between gasps of belly laughter. "You're like a
superhero, Erik!"

Erik checked the gun and saw that it was in fact, not loaded, just like the
Darren kid said. He then took it and threw it into the water.

"Come on, we better get going." Erik said while Quincy got up to his feet,
still guffawing.

The boys waded back downstream. Quincy was practically doubled over from
laughter the whole way, and eventually it rubbed off on Erik. Erik started
laughing, and the two of them laughed all the way down the stream and up
the path, right up to the William's shed where, predictably, they had to
wait for Mr. Williams to finish his clandestine cigarette. Quincy's father
was home, and was firing up the big, brick barbeque in the back. The family
ate grilled chicken and burgers on the patio while Erik sat to the side and
watched them with a big smile on his face. Erik said to Quincy later in the
evening that watching them brought back memories of his own family, and
that those were some of the happiest memories that he had.

Quincy was dropped off at day camp by his dad the next morning. His
experience with the bullies the previous day made him change his mind about
shunning Timothy, so he decided to try to make friends with him. This
proved to be no easy task, as Timothy was shy and had been picked on a
lot. He thought that Quincy was just another unfriendly kid who was
pretending to be his friend so that he could gather ammo to use against
him. Quincy had managed to gain Timothy's confidence enough by the end of
the day so that at least he wasn't retreating away from him anymore. By the
end of the third day, Quincy and Timothy had become good friends.

During the early afternoon of Quincy's third day at camp, Carol was sitting
in the kitchen with the TV playing. She was drinking a cup of coffee and
reading the newspaper. The doorbell to the front door rang. She went to
answer it and was surprised to see Dr. Singh from the trip to Kaiser on
Sunday night. He was carrying a lap top tucked under one arm, and a valise
in the other.

"Hello, Mrs. Lenhardt."

"Dr. Singh? "

"Mrs. Lenhardt, it is important that I speak to you. It is in regards to
Quincy's wound from the other night. May I please come in?"

Dr. Singh looked haggard, and had three days growth of beard. She was
reluctant to let him into the house, but she was concerned as to why he
felt the need to visit her in person about Quincy. Instead of letting him
in, she had him go around the back, and they both sat at the table on the
back patio. It was sunny and hot out, so Carol opened up the large umbrella
over the table.

"How can I help you, Doctor?"

"Mrs. Lenhardt..." Singh began. "After you and Rep. Lenhardt left the other
night, I decided to do a bit of research. What I first want to let you
know, is that Quincy's blood sample tests came back today, and based on
that, we could find no evidence of radiation exposure or any other
anomalies. From the very limited testing that I was able to do, he appears
to be a perfectly healthy twelve year old boy."

"Well of course he is. He was playing a prank with some kind of costume
makeup is all."

"No, Mrs. Lenhardt. The wound was real, but it doesn't make sense that he
would have a wound like that, and it makes even less sense that it would
completely disappear like it did."

"Doctor, I..."

"After you and your husband left, I drew the bite marks from Quincy's
shoulder by memory. The bite was very distinctive. There was a missing
molar, and a missing left incisor, which is consistant with the bite of a
ten year old child." Singh opened the valise and handed Carol the drawing
that he had done."I took the bite pattern and I went into a data bank of
dental records. It yielded several matches, but there was one match in
particular. that caught my attention." Singh then handed Carol a print out
of several dental x-rays.

"Doctor, I'm not a dentist or a radiologist." Carol said. "I really don't
see what the point of..."

"These x-rays are from a ten year old boy who once lived in this very
house." Singh continued. "His name was Erik Westergaard. His family moved
into this house in 1969 after it was built. His father was Jensen
Westergaard, who was the Assistant High Commissioner for the Danish Embassy
in Washington."

"Doctor, I really don't see what any of this has to do with me or my
family. I think it would be best if you..."

"This family lived in this house until 1980, when Jensen all of a sudden
retired from the diplomatic corps. He and his wife put the house up for
sale and the two of them returned to Denmark."

"The two of them? I thought they had a son."

"They did. He was killed two years prior."

"Killed?"

"Yes. He was hit by a car right in front of this house. The car was
speeding down the street in front of here, and Erik was killed instantly."

"Oh my God, how sad!"

Singh unzipped the valise, pulled a computer print out from it, and handed
it to Carol. It was an article about Erik's death that had appeared in the
Washington Post. It mentioned that Erik had been killed around 7:30 PM on
the evening of August 31, 1978. The article had a school picture of the boy
and a picture of the front of the house.

"Oh my, this is right out in front!" Carol said.

"The accident made news both here and in Denmark. The boy's funeral was
attended by most of the Danish consulate as well as the US Ambassador and
other officials. He's buried at the Lutheran Church here in Mclean." Singh
took out a picture of Erik's small gravestone and handed it to Carol.

"September 2 1967 to August 31 1978. It was almost his birthday, how sad."

"As you can see in the article, the driver who hit him was Mattheius
Wolf. He was sixteen and had just gotten his drivers license. He had been
driving while intoxicated and was being charged as an adult for vehicular
manslaughter. On the day of Erik's funeral, and while out on bail, he shot
himself in the head in his parents basement with one of his father's
hunting rifles." Singh then showed her the article about Mattheius's
suicide.

Carol looked at the article and then looked up at Dr. Singh. "This is all
very tragic, and I had no idea about any of this. I still don't see what
any of this has to do with Quincy's bite mark."

"I went and checked the real estate records of this house. After the
Westergaards moved out, the house stood empty for about a year. The next
fall, a family named Moeller moved in and stayed for almost three years
before abruptly moving out. The father was a government lawyer. He claimed
that the family had grown stressed from strange noises and cold spots..."
Singh handed the real estate records to Carol." Ever since then, there have
been fourteen families that have lived in this house, and with two extended
periods of vacancy. Almost every one has claimed to have experienced
paranormal activity. One little girl said that she saw a blond boy appear
in her bedroom. Others have claimed to have seen strange lights and heard
strange noises, seen misty shapes in rooms and hallways, doors opening and
closing by themselves, trouble operating electronic devices and so on. The
activity seems to start every year at the beginning of August, and then
stops in early September. The current owner lived in this house for ten
years with her husband. After he died she moved out. Since then, not
counting your family, she has rented the house to nine tenants, the last
three of which all broke their leases and fled the house. She had a tenant
before that who did stay for the whole lease, and then five tenants before
that who had also broken their leases and fled the house, sometimes leaving
all of their possessions behind. All of these events occured in either
August or early September of whatever year."

Carol appeared to be looking at the information Singh had handed her, but
all she was thinking about was the frightened mover and the books that flew
off of the shelf in the kitchen.

"Have you experienced any paranormal activity since you've moved into this
house, Mrs. Lenhardt?"

Carol looked up at Singh. He had an exhausted, manic look, like he hadn't
slept in days.

"No...No. Of course not!" She said unconvincingly.

"There is one more thing that I must tell you. I was still very concerned
about Quincy's wound. After I had uncovered all this information, I decided
to drive through the neighborhoods around here. I went to the ones where
Quincy may have been, but I saw nothing anywhere that could have caused
that type of wound. I know the government has many secret installations
around here, but in this particular area, all you have are residential
neighborhoods. After I was done looking, I came and parked in front of your
house."

"You what?" Carol said.

"While I was parked I noticed a strange light in the window on that side of
the house." Singh said while pointing towards Quincy's bedroom."It was a
faint, misty, glowing, fuzzy, greenish light. It appeared in the window and
then seemed to retreat into the room. I had no idea what I was seeing..."

"You mean to tell me that you spied on our house?"

"Mrs. Lenhardt, I believe that this house is haunted by the ghost of that
little boy, and that this entity attacked your son!"

Carol stood up. "Get out! Get out! Before I call the police! Get out!"

Singh got up and quickly left some additional papers on the table. "Tell
your husband! Here! Take these! Show your husband!" He said.

"Get out of here!" Carol screamed as Dr. Singh fled out the gate. She put
her hand on her head and gave a big shudder. She then looked at her watch
and saw that it was almost time to pick up Quincy at day camp. She picked
up Singh's paperwork that he left, and turned to enter the house, As she
did, she suddenly let out a big gasp. A large black, shadowy shape in the
kitchen moved quickly away from the sliding glass door. It was only there
for a split second, but she thought that it had a skeletal, human
shape. She went slowly towards the door trembling, and slid it open. She
entered the kitchen and saw nothing. The AC then went on and Carol let out
a startled shriek. She then decided that this doctor was a nut and that she
had allowed him get the best of her. She took Singh's paperwork that he
left and threw it into the garbage. She then grabbed her purse and her
keys, and went out to the car to pick up Quincy. As she pulled out of the
driveway, Erik watched her from the upstairs master bedroom window, and
then returned to Quincy's room, where he had been the whole time.
