The Rich Kid
Part 24

The journey home was full of chatter about our adventures and how
we saved the girl at the lock. Father and Mr Jones listened eagerly. Our
only regret was that we wouldn't get another chance to see James before we
went back to school.
Despite Mike and I being committed to each other, I now feel that
we, Mike and I may just have found someone else that not only loves us, but
we both love too. Why is life always so damn complicated? My love for Mike
hasn't diminished any, but another is creeping into my heart. Don't get me
wrong, there is no way James will ever be my true love, but he is rapidly
becoming a very close second. I also have the feeling that Mike feels much
the same as I do. The trouble is how do you broach a subject like this?
We dropped Mike's kayak off at the boathouse on our way back to the
house. We insisted that we take care of our equipment first. After
unloading, it was a mad scramble for the bath and for the first time in
ages neither of us really wanted to share it either. I let Mike go first.
That way I had some time to myself and could think the whole James
situation through properly without and distractions.
Mike appeared from the bathroom and pretty soon I was up to my neck
in bubbles. It felt really good to be able to just relax and not have to
think about anyone else, except James that is.
The next few days passed quietly and uneventfully until father
called us in to his office. Like most boys, our initial thoughts were about
what we had done wrong, but we needn't have worried. We were handed a
newspaper and there on the front cover was a picture of Mike, James and I
rescuing the girl. For once, the paper had printed a story that had a happy
ending or so we thought. Father's expression told us something else.
	"What's up?" I asked.
"Well, this may cause us some problems." Father was now deep in
thought. "You remember we had some trouble a while ago with those animal
people?" He asked. Mike and I nodded. "Well, this might stir things up as
they now know what the pair of you look like and unfortunately you may
become targets for them."
"How do you mean targets?" Mike asked nervously.
"Well, some of what my company does involves the testing of new
drugs on animals. Unfortunately, some people don't approve of this and
will go to extremes to stop this sort of testing from happening."
"You mean they use guns and bombs and things." Mike said nervously.
"Sometimes, yes." Father replied wearily. "But you needn't worry
about that." There was a pause. "After lunch, I'd like you both dressed"
Mike sniggered interrupting father. Father glared at him. "As I was
saying, after lunch I would like both of you dressed smart, but casual as
you have visitors coming."
"Who is it father?" I asked excitedly.
"You'll just have to wait and see." And with that, father started
working again and we left his office. All the way back to the family room,
we talked excitedly about who the visitors might be. After lunch we
showered and changed and went up to the library. We talked quietly as we
waited for the visitors to arrive.
A shiny black Rolls Royce pulled up in front of the house and the
chauffeur opened the door for a very well dressed gentleman and a pretty
looking girl.
"It's her!" Mike shouted as he dashed towards the door.
"Who?" I shouted back as I tried hard to keep up with him.
"The one from the boat, the one that fell in at the lock!" Mike
sounded a little exasperated.
"I know." I said. He was far to keen to meet her for my liking. We
slipped into father's study and awaited their arrival. The butler announced
them and we all stood whilst the introductions we made.
For the next half an hour we listened to the girl's father go on
about how brave we were and how we had saved his "little girl's" life. I
caught Mike having a sneaky yawn once of twice and suppressed a grin. At
the end of it all he asked us if we would like to spend a weekend down on
the coast with him and his family on their yacht. The sailing sounded good,
but not with them, no way. After graciously declining their offer and some
refreshments the two of them left.
"What the hell was that all about?" Father asked angrily.
"Small dinghies are one thing, but those yachts don't interest me
at all." I replied sharply.
"You selfish little." Father stopped short.
"Oh, so there was an ulterior motive here was there?" I
retorted. Father turned and started pacing up and down the carpet trying to
regain his composure.
"Do you know who that was? What he owns?" Father asked me.
"He owns one of the largest cosmetic companies in the world and has
more zeros in his bank balance than we could ever count." Mike answered
calmly. "Besides, I didn't like him or his daughter. She was only after one
thing." We both looked at Mike in sheer amazement.
	"What?" Mike asked.
"Where did you find that out?" I asked.
"The who's who in the library. She gave me her name and phone
number before they left us at the lock."
"Hm. And what was she after might I ask?" Father looked at Mike
closely. He didn't answer but rubbed his favourite toy suggestively through
his trousers.
"Oh. I see. It was your decision boys, but it would have proven to
be very useful for the business." Father told us.
"What use do you have for cosmetics? Your well past the patch up
stage now. In fact you'd need a plasterer to cover the cracks." Mike and I
fell about in fits of laughter. Father went red then smiled. Soon he too
was laughing hard.
"Just you wait young man." Father said trying to keep a straight
face and failing miserably.
There was a knock at the door and the butler entered. He reminded
Mike that he had another hovercraft lesson this afternoon and the
instructor had just arrived. Mike left us and went for his lesson. Father
quizzed me closely about why I wanted a cooker for the flat. I told him
about my surprise and asked for a small favour. I needed Mike out of the
way tomorrow. Father said he would take Mike to the plant tomorrow which
would give me the time I needed to prepare the special treat I had been
planning.
I spent the next couple of hours in the kitchen with cook going
over the trickier points in my menu before returning to our flat and having
a long soak in the bath. Mike was never far from my thoughts. The trouble
was, neither was James. What used to be a clear case of true love was now
being complicated by a third person. Don't get me wrong, my love for Mike
hadn't diminished any, but my feelings for James were also getting
stronger. I knew these feelings would ultimately get me into trouble with
Mike despite his feelings for James. I resolved that James from now on was
off limits to me. It was a damned hard decision to make, but my love for
Mike wasn't going to be compromised by anyone or anything!
I had just climbed out of the bath when I heard the front door
close with a click as the latch snapped back into place.
"Ed', are you there love?" Mike called out. His voice was full of
excitement as he looked around the flat. We met as I was leaving the bath
room. "Why didn't you wait for me?" Mike asked.
"I needed to do some thinking. I'll explain later." I replied.
"Do you want to give me a hand with my shower? Well, you are
dressed for it." Mike said as he whipped my towel away from me. For some
strange reason I went red and quickly dragged him into the shower. Despite
Mike's best efforts, I couldn't or possibly wouldn't rise to the
occasion. When we had finished and were both dry again we dressed, but
before I could do anything Mike guided me to the sofa.
"Ed, I need to talk to you." Mike said. It sounded ominous.
"I think we need to talk too." I added apprehensively.
"This business with James," I let out an enormous sigh of
relief. "I see it has been worrying you too judging by your reaction."
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about."
"As much as I like him, I don't think there is enough room in our
relationship for him too." Mike sounded nervous as he said this.
"I know. The question is how do we ease him out without hurting
him?" It was clear that we both felt for him and had to find a way out of
our relationship without hurting him. The big question was how?
"You feel the same? I was scared that you might want him to stay."
Mike replied.
"I want him to stay a friend, not as a lover. That wouldn't be fair
on any of us. How the hell are we going to do it?"
"I dunno." Mike replied slipping back to his old terminology.
"Who do we know that we can talk to?" I asked.
	"There's your dad?" Mike suggested.
"Nah. He's been out of a relationship for too long now." There was
a short pause. "How about your mum and dad? They have been pretty cool
about the whole thing between us." I asked.
"Good idea. How about we invite them over on Saturday evening and
hold a small dinner party? It's our anniversary too, so we could make a
real night of it." Mike sounded really keen on the idea, which caused me a
whole new set of problems.
"I've got a better idea. Let's invite them all to lunch instead?" I
tried to deflect him from the evening because of my plans.
"Why lunch? The evening would be a better time for a party." Mike
replied.
"Er.Er.No. I prefer lunch time." How the hell was I going to sort
this mess out?
"Why? Don't you want a party?"
"Of course I do, but I'd rather it was just you and I that's all."
"How do you have a party with just two people?"
"That depends on the type of party." I answered feeling very
awkward and upset now that I may be forced to reveal my plans to him.
"Ah! I see. You have a night of hot sex planned you rascal." Mike
said smiling and pulling me too him and kissing me on the lips. "But that
could wait until afterwards couldn't it?" The pressure was really on me
now.
"Yes, I suppose it could, but I have something else planned, a
surprise for you." This was it. If he were on form, which he appeared to
be, my plans would be dragged out of me.
"Not another expensive present I hope?" Mike said with a scowl.
"No!" I said feeling hurt. "We agreed no more presents like that."
"Good. So what do you have up your sleeve then?" Mike asked
grinning widely at me.
"Oh no you don't." I replied as I tried to stand up
quickly. Unfortunately I was too slow and pretty soon I was pinned to the
floor with Mike sat astride me.
"Come on. Out with it." Mike said as he started tickling me. By
this time I was laughing so hard I could hardly breath, but still he
persisted. I didn't know how much longer I could hold out!
	"Come on." He said again.
"No way!" I replied and played dirty. I hit the panic button on my
locator. Moments later three burly security guards came bowling in through
the door. Unfortunately they totally misread the situation and dragged Mike
off kicking and screaming. They weren't very gentle with him at all. I
managed to calm things down, but knew we were both in for an ear bashing
from our fathers.
In father's study, Mike and I were stood in front of his desk. I
tried to explain that I had accidentally knocked it, but that didn't wash
with either of the dads or Mike. We all knew the button had to be pressed
three times in rapid succession to activate it. Mike left us and I spent
the next 10 minutes getting a severe grilling from both fathers.
By the time I was allowed to leave, my ears were sore and I still
had to apologise not only to the security manager but the guards as
well. All in all, the next 20 minutes was very uncomfortable for me and I
still had to face Mike.
Mike was waiting in the flat for me. He was in a foul mood and
wouldn't listen to me let alone talk to me without shouting. This was
harder to take than all the previous ear bashing I had endured. In the end
I sat on the sofa and cried my heart out. Was anything worth this hassle?
Mike really surprised me now, he sat down, put his arm around me and hugged
me tight.
"You had a dinner party planned for Saturday night, didn't you?
Just for us?" He asked softly. I looked at him in amazement.
"How did you find out?" I asked looking at him through blurry eyes.
"I saw it in father's diary. Well not what you had planned, but to
leave us alone that night. With a little detective work I found out that
you had been to the kitchen a lot whilst I was on my hovercraft lessons. I
figured that the cooker had a lot to do with it too."
"So why all the tickling earlier?"
"I wanted you to tell me yourself." Mike told me.
"I should have known that nothing could be kept secret around here
for long! So why make all the fuss and that business about a party on
Saturday night?"
"I was trying to confirm my little piece of detective work, that's
all."
	"So no party?"
"Nope. No party. I am all yours. Oh and I like my steaks well
done!"
"Oh and I was going to bring in fish and chips!" I replied with a
laugh. Mike laughed too. So he had sussed out my plans, but the menu was
going to be something totally different. There was no way he was going to
find that out.
Mike made his usual evening visit to see his parents and I went to
see father. It was here that we changed my plans totally. Ok, getting the
cooker was now classed as an initial waste of money, but at least it would
be useful in the future. Father summoned the housekeeper and the butler and
handed the meeting over to me.
As I needed them both on-side for my revised plans, the first thing
I did was to offer them a seat and a sherry. Father would never have done
this, but then again I am not my father. I outlined the plan to them and
they both appreciated my predicament. After 10 to 15 minutes the new plan
was finalised. To throw Mike off the scent, I was going to prepare
hamburgers and trimmings for an early tea with dinner scheduled for 8
PM. This would allow us time to visit his parents before coming back to the
flat which had been prepared whilst we were out.
Something I wasn't aware of until then was that father was holding
a dinner party that night for Mike's parents. It now became evident that
they would be having the same menu as us. The one I had chosen. This would
also help to throw 'Sherlock Holmes' off the scent still further.
It was now that the pendant around my neck caused a pang of guilt
in me as I thought about a present for Mike. I initially thought about
something grand and expensive. In the end I settled on some silk boxers,
something we could both appreciate. I had learned something from our
relationship.
Over the next couple of days there seemed to be a lot of young
people coming and going from the house. It puzzled me a little so I set
Sherlock Holmes on the case. Mike reported back that they were all
apprentices from father's factories and things receiving their annual
reports. This struck me as a little odd as father had never done this
before, but I thought nothing more about it.
I spent Friday afternoon in town with one of the drivers
shopping. It was great fun. The driver had impeccable taste in clothes and
a great sense of humour. Once or twice I thought I saw Mike, but the driver
simply wrote it off as me seeing things. God! I must be in love.
That night, as Mike and I lay in bed, we discussed the James
problem again. I knew we both felt a great deal for him, but I had not
only underestimated my feelings, but Mike's also. There was no doubt about
our love for each other, but we thought of James as more than a brother. We
also agreed that we had to do something radical before we went back to
school.
As I settled down, a hand gently slipped around my waste and
cradled my equipment. I snuggled backward only to discover Mike was
clean-shaven and ready for some fun. As he fondled and played with me, all
I could think of was James and how he would feel about being shut out of
this part of our lives. It put a real downer on things for me. Even Mike
noticed, well he could help but notice when I failed to rise to the
occasion for him.
	"James." He simply said.
	"Yeah." I replied.
"Ok. Let's just sleep on it." Which is exactly what we did. Neither
of us liked it much, but there was nothing else we could do about it.
