CHAPTER 4  Going Home.


March 21 1963 Alcatraz prison closed its doors for the last time as the last
of its prisoners were transferred to outer area prisons and most of its
Famous prisoners had been moved to other locations.

"Look is that the bird man over there." Danny said as gray prison
officers moved an old looking man to a prison vehicle.  "Well they
are holding a bird cage so it could be him." Rodney replied.  "
I dinnae {don't} know who you are on aboot but those weird looking
people are staring at me. Jonno complained.

"Oh they won't hurt you they are just the local hippies that have come to
see the fun here just like us." Danny hooted.   "Hippies ah what the hell
are hippies anyway." Jonno asked.  "Oh god, do we have to tell him
Danny." Rodney groaned.

"It won't take long, ok they are a group of folks that like to be free and
do drugs and eat weird food and chant silly things and sometimes go
around with no clothes on." Danny tried to explain.  "Ooh that sounds great
Where do we join?" Jonno giggled.

"I knew you would ask that Jonno but we have to get a move on as we will be
going to Danny's house in a few hours so let's see if we can see any more famous
prisoners arrive." Rodney said as he ate his lunch by the wharf.

The warden of Alcatraz walked off the tug boat and shook hands with the mayor of
San Francisco and stood next to him while newspaper photographers took a load
of photos of them as folks moved close to hear what the warden was going to
say about the closing of his prison.


"We have to leave now so shake a leg and get a move on as we need to catch
the next cable car back to school." Danny smiled as he could not wait to
show off his new friends to his family.   Officer Pat o' Riley was at the cable car
stop waiting to go home.

"Hello boys, what are you doing down here." he asked.  "Oh we wanted to
see the bird man of Alcatraz." Rodney said.  "I see, did you see him then."
Officer o'Riley  asked.   " Uh I think so, we saw someone carry a bird cage
and it could have been him but we were not sure." Danny replied.

"Well it was him as he was the last prisoner to leave the island." Officer
o' Riley laughed.   "Oh boy, wait till I tell my friends when I get back
home today, they will be jealous of me."Danny hooted.  The cable car
arrived and the boys sat down in the seats as they were too young
to stand on the outside of the cable car.


A few stops later Pat o' Riley jumped off the rails and said good bye to
the boys and said to enjoy their summer break...    10 minutes later
the boys arrived back at the boarding school with happy smiles on
their faces.   "Not long now guys and we will be free of school."
Rodney hooted.  "Aye man I cannie wait to see your kin and where you live."
Jonno happily said.

 "I know you two will like my folks as they are so cool."
Danny quoted.    After arriving back in their room the boys packed up their
clothes and other items they would be taking with them to Danny's house.


Lunch was quickly eaten as the headmaster wished all his pupils a happy
and safe holidays and said to behave return with a happy face.   15 minutes
later us boys arrived at the greyhound bus station and waited for our
bus to take us home.  It would take about 2 hours to get there and then
a ten minute ride in the car to my house.

I lived in the suburbs of Chesterfield north of San Francisco, A peaceful
township of 4 thousand.     My brother was waiting for us at the bus stop
and ran towards me yelling like an Indian on a war path.  "Fred, Fred

Dad had to go back to work and that just left my mother and brother and my

them where we all would be staying.  "This is my room and by the looks of it
my parents have set up some bunk beds for you all." I said.  the beds
were placed next to each other as it was better that way and not on top

I would rearrange the beds so that we were all lined up together just
like we did at school.   "So Joey what have you been doing since I left home."
I asked him.    "Oh not much, just playing with your brother and just hanging

I was sent to the boarding school.

room and looked at Jonno and Rodney with his bright smile and asked
if they liked being here in Chesterfield.

to be in" Jonno smiled. "you will have to get used to Jonno's accent as he
used to live in another country.  I told my brother.  "I have missed you
Danny, have you missed me." He said as he planted a huge wet kiss on

"Thanks Fred, I have missed you too." I replied as I patted him on the butt.
Joey returned with a huge smile on his face as he was allowed to stay for
dinner.  "I think we will all get along together over the summer."
I told the guys as Rodney and Jonno laid back on their beds.

Jonno thanked my brother and did his business and returned feeling

as my mum caught me doing this she said that it was rude to poke your
tongue out at some one.  dinner was real nice as mum always can cook
a great pot roast and the smell of  baked apple pie was floating around the
room as mum went to take it out of the oven.   "That was a real grand dinner
your mum cooked up." Jonno said as he patted his full tummy and licked his
lips waiting for the apple pie.

Rodney was happy with the meal as he loved pot roast the most and would
thank my mum saying that was the best he has ever had.   Mum returned
with a tray of bowls of apple pie and fresh whipped cream, moans of joy

baked pies as I told my friends that my mum was a great cook.

Joey was gulping down his pie as he had to return home in 5 minutes
and get ready for his baseball practice.   "Thanks for the dinner
it was real tasty." Joey said as he and I walked to the front door

I go I have to tell you that the Y.M.C.A has opened up a new center
just 7 minutes down the road so how about we all head over there
tomorrow around 10 am." Joey asked.

"Ok I will tell the other guys about it and if we can go I will
let you know tomorrow morning ok." I replied.

We all helped to wash up the dinner plates and clear the table and then went to
the den and played a few games of checkers and chess until it was time for bed.
Fred was going around and kissing everyone on the lips even Jonno and Rodney

"Mum us guys are going to the "Y" for awhile and then to
