Chapter 01


Devin sat in the kitchen sulking over a bowl of cheerios as his mom was
getting ready to leave
for work on what was going to be another lonely boring day of summer.
"Honey don't forget you have to scoop the leaves out of the pool, mow the
lawn and paint the
fence" Devin's mother said to him as she came back into the kitchen.
"Yes mom you told me five times already last night" Devin replied with a
deep sigh.
"It's gonna be another scorcher today folks with temperatures expected to
reach into the
nineties" the weather man said on the TV that Devin's mom had on in the
kitchen watching the
morning news.
"Great like it's not hot enough already" Devin said with another deep sigh.
"when's dad coming back?" asked as his mother was sorting through some
papers before putting them
in her briefcase.
"In Two weeks" his mother replied brushing away her hair from her face.
"Hmp" Devin sighed again as he knew two weeks usually meant two months.
"cheer up its summer hang out with your friends have some fun" his mother
said smiling at him
a little.
"We just moved here remember I don't have any friends" Devin replied
glancing at his mother as he
put his cereal bowl in the dishwasher.

"Still I'm sure there are lots of kids your age around the neighborhood you
should try to get to
know some of them" His mother replied.
"I'll try to meet some of them between scooping a million leaves out of the
pool painting the
fence and mowing the lawn" Devin said with a tone of sarcasm.
"Don't get smart with me mister" his mother warned him as he climbed the
stairs to go brush his
teeth.
As Devin stood brushing his teeth he looked at himself in the mirror and
frowned as he thought
of how much it sucked moving to a new neighborhood and not knowing anyone
there.
"so how do I look" Devin's mother asked as he came back down the stairs
after brushing his teeth.
"Like you belong in a choir" Devin said laughing as he saw his mother
dressed in her robes for
her new job as a superior court judge which was part of the reason for their
move.
"That's the last time I ask your opinion" his mother said smiling as she
pulled off her robe and
put it into a carrying case.
"Remember the paint is in the garage" his mother said picking up her
briefcase and headed to the
door carrying her robe in a case.
"I'll see you later" his mother said kissing his forehead before she walked
out the door.
"Bye mom" Devin said with a little smile
Devin watched as his mother reversed from the driveway, she waved to him
from where he was
standing holding the door open and pulled out into the street.

As soon as her car was a little way down the street Devin closed the door
and cranked up the air
condition, He flopped down on the couch and turned on the TV in no hurry to
get his chores done.
After frying his brain in front of the TV as his mother described it Devin
got up to get started
on his chores deciding not to prolong the inevitable.
Devin slid open the glass doors that led out to the back yard to where the
pool was and removed
the plastic covering.
He frowned when he saw how many leaves had fallen in after he forgot to put
the covering over the
pool after he finished swimming yesterday.
He wished his parents would just ask the neighbors to trim the branches that
were hanging over
their fence so he wouldn't have to scoop out leaves everyday out of the pool

After swearing to himself for about half an hour as he scooped out the
leaves he wiped the sweat

He pulled the covering back over the pool and went back inside wiping his

Devin went to the kitchen and had a drink of water before going outside to
mow the lawn, he went
over to the garage and opened the door and got the lawn mower out.
As Devin pushed the lawn mower over to the lawn he spotted a girl that lived
across the street

Devin glanced back at her as he walked up to the front door and went inside
to get another drink
of water as the heat was really beginning to get to him.

After he had a cool refreshing drink of water he came back out side and saw

and find out her name
which was something he was dying to know.
"Hey you wanna shoot some hoops with me" the girl from across the street
yelled to Devin with a
smile.
Devin stood staring at her blankly for a few seconds before he answered.

Devin pulled the lawn mower back to the garage totally forgetting he had to
paint the fence.
He put the lawn mower back into the corner of the garage he got it from and
closed the garage
door before he walked across the street to the girl's house.
"Hi I'm Tracy" she said smiling as she passed the ball to Devin.

"I'm Devin" Devin said with a little smile as he started bouncing the ball

"You just moved here a few weeks ago right" she said with a smile that Devin

favorite game in the world.
Devin switched the ball that he was bouncing with his right hand to his left
and prepared to

He stood with his mouth open as the last thing he remembered was he was

Tracy smiled at Devin and bounced the ball back over to him, Devin caught
the ball and looked at

ball from him

another two points.

as he looked at

Devin decided on a different approach this time, he decided not to try and

ball sail through the air and hoped it would go into the ring since he was
not really good at

The ball hit the rim and made it into the hoop and dropped back down where
Tracy retrieved it.
Devin gave Tracy a smile of superiority at having scored a tree point shot.
"That was pretty good" Tracy said as he bounced the ball back over to Devin.
"Thanks" Devin said smiling a he brushed his hair from his forehead thankful
that the ball had
made it into the hoop.
Tracy gave Devin a wicked smile as he bounced the ball Devin smiled back at
her and decided to
try for another three pointer.
Devin bounced the ball a couple of time and tried for another three point
shot, but this time
Tracy was ready for him.

Devin stood in awe as he watched Tracy who seemed to defy gravity and slap
the ball away.
"Not this time you have to work for it" Tracy said with a smile as she
bounced the ball back
over to Devin.
This girl is incredible Devin thought to himself looking at Tracy who had a

as before Tracy

"You want to continue" Tracy asked Devin as the score was now eight to
three.

score two points.
Tracy smiled at Devin as she bounced the ball, Devin knew that Tracy had let
him score the last
two points which made him feel terrible.
Devin knew that there was no way he could win now but he decided to go down
fighting as he Tracy

Tracy switched the ball form her left hand to her right bouncing it with a
smile as Devin tried
to get it away from her.

from getting to the

"Sure" Tracy said smiling.
Devin smiled back at her and they both headed over to his house to get a
drink.
They went into the kitchen and Devin got a pitcher of water from the
refrigerator and two glasses
and filled them with water.
He and Tracy gulped down the water as they were both incredibly thirsty
after their game and from
the humid conditions outside.
"Can I have some more" Tracy said as she put her empty glass on the kitchen
counter.
Devin smiled at her and put down his empty glass and refilled Tracy's and
then his.
"Thanks" Tracy said gasping as she put back down her glass and smiled at
Devin.
Devin just smiled back at her as he put the two empty glasses in the sink
and he and Tracy left
the kitchen and went into the living room.

The water had helped with the heat but despite the ac being on it was still
sweltering hot
inside.
Devin got up and lifted the end of his shirt and wiped away the sweat from

blushed at Tracy when he put back down his shirt and saw her smiling at him.
He turned the air condition up to the maximum setting hoping that it would
cool down the living

Devin turned on the TV after their brief conversation having once again run
of anything to say

his bed and left
his room.

"well I'm gonna get dinner started watch TV or something" Devin mother said

head before she got up from the sofa and took up her shoes went upstairs to
change.


"Are you sure you're okay" Devin's mother said to him as they sat down to
dinner.

go to bed so early.

three degrees today" the man who was giving the weather report said.
Devin was too preoccupied by his thought of Tracy to care about the weather
today as he slowly
ate his cereal.
After he finished breakfast he went up stairs to the bathroom to brush his
teeth.
when he was done he went back to his room and brushed his hair something

forward to seeing

When he came back downstairs he said good bye to his mother and went to the
living room to watch
some TV before getting started on painting the fence.
After watching TV for a while Devin got up with a heavy sigh and decided to
go get started on
painting the fence.

Devin went over to the garage door and opened it and walked inside and

brushes were on.

for the paint brush.
Devin saw his dad's paint gun and wished his dad had shown him how to
operate it. If he did it
would have gotten the job done in half the time it would take using a paint
brush, but then again
his dad probably didn't know how to use it or the dozens of other tools that
he had bought.
He got the brushes and jumped down from the paint bucket, Devin picked up
the bucket of paint
along with the brushes and walked out of the garage and went over to the
fence.
Devin opened the bucket of paint and stirred it around with a stick before
he started painting
the fence.
He dipped one of the brushes he brought with him into the bucket of white
paint and stooped down
started painting the fence.

Devin continued paint the fence occasionally glancing up at Tracy's house
across the street to
see if he was coming outside.
He looked away to dip the brush into the paint and when he looked up he felt
