Renee heard her brother cursing as he came down the hallway toward
her office. That could mean only one thing, he just had a visit from
Ms. Sophie Martine, the inventory manager for their best customer and also
Ian's biggest pain in the ass which is why her brother always to refer to
her as "That Bitch".
"You know what that Bitch had the gall to say to me?" Ian said as he
came into Renee's office, sitting in cushioned chair that was placed to one
side of her desk.
"No, what did Ms. Martine do now?" Renee asked patiently as she
turned her attention to her brother.
"We made over a hundred thousand boxes for her company last month
and she brought in five boxes, five damn boxes mind you, that had a little
ink that was smeared on them. I mean that is less than a hundredth of a
percent defective. You can't ask for anything better than that but she said
it was unacceptable. She told me that if we couldn't do any better then she
would be forced to find another vendor for her boxes. God what does that
woman wants me to do, make them myself. I tell you what, one of these days
she is going to walk into my office and I'm going to shoot her right
between the eyes. And by god I dare any jury to convict me. Hell, they may
give me the Medal of Honor just for getting that bitch off this earth and
out of everyone's hair." He said as he vented his anger.
"I know you hate her but she represents our biggest customer, you
just have to humor her." Renee said, thankful that she didn't have to deal
with her, from what her brother told her about Ms. Sophie Martine, she knew
she would definitely shoot her if she had to deal with her. She just didn't
have the patience to deal with people like her. She was glad that she was
on the finance side of the business that their father started and not the
marketing end as her brother was.
"That's what pop keeps telling me but I would like to see him deal
with her." Ian said.
"That's why he had us, so that we could take care of everything he
no longer wanted to deal with." Renee said with a smile.
"Yea, pop keeps telling me that too." Ian said as he finally let a
smile cross his face.
"Well, look at it this way, you got a whole week before she shows up
again." Renee told him trying to cheer her poor brother up.
"With my luck, she'll decide that she hasn't bitched enough for this
week and show up again tomorrow." Ian said with a sigh.
"Just remember, she brings over ten million a year to this company
and that my dear brother is paying for Ursula's remodeling your house."
Renee said referring to Ian's wife who was a sweet lady but she constantly
changing something in their house. Every year she had something new that
just had to be done.
"That reminds me, do you want to come over for dinner tonight,
Ursula would love to have you and you know your nephews would love to have
their favorite aunt over." Ian said.
"I'm their only aunt and Ursula is adding a sun room to the house
and you don't want to listen to her talk all night on what she wants to
do." Renee said as she gave her brother the eye.
"Okay you got me, I just want to go home tonight and have some peace
and quiet. You know how Ursula is, once she gets a project in her head. She
can't stop talking about it. I really don't care what she wants to do to
the house, as long as it makes her happy then it's fine with me. Most
nights I don't mind listening to her, but tonight I just want to go home
and relax." Ian admitted as he gave Renee his best puppy dog look.
Renee never could turn down her older brother, he had looked out for
her all her life and he kept her secret safe from their parents so she gave
in. "Okay, but you owe me bro." Renee said.
"Great, I love you sis, you're the best sister I got." Ian said as
she jumped from his chair and headed for the door.
"I'm your only sister fool." Renee said as Ian went out the door.
"That's why you're my favorite sister." He said as he went down the
hall and she could hear him laughing.
Renee sat back in her chair and thought about her life. It had been
years since her last lover left her for that beautiful blond. Every time
she thought about that, her heart ached. Of course, this left her plenty of
time to spend with her nephews who were darlings and they did love her to
death. Ursula was a sweet woman who she enjoyed talking to. She could talk
a mile a minute but she also knew when to shut up and listen. She also took
care of her brother. When Ursula first started dating her brother and Renee
saw how much in love he was with her, Renee got jealous. She saw someone
taking her brother away from her. All the time they were growing up, he had
never complained when his little sister followed him around. She idolized
her big brother and still did in a way. But Ursula saw how Renee felt and
she took the time to get to know her. She made a effort to win her over,
taking her shopping and doing things with her. For a young teenager, this
meant a lot. She found that she had a grow up friend and thus she let her
brother go. So she ended up loving her sister-in-law as much as she did her
brother. They kept her going since her last lover had left but all the same
she wished that she had someone of her own. What she didn't know was that
the fates were about to fix that problem for her.
A month or so later, Renee was working at her desk when she looked
up to see her brother standing at the door. He had puppy dog look on his
face that he always used when he wanted something from her, so she knew
something was up. She didn't think much about it as she knew whatever it
was, she would give in and do what he needed done. Of course, she would put
up a big fuss first and tell him that she owed him for it.
As he came on into her office, she happened to notice that is was
Thursday, the day that "That Bitch" always came to see him. She quickly
looked at her calendar and saw that she had nothing planned for the day so
she quickly scheduled a meeting with her staff. Normally her staff meetings
were short but this one she made long enough to cover the time "That Bitch"
would be there.
"Hey sis, how's it going?" Ian said as he sat down by her desk.
"Fine, just heading out. I got a staff meeting in about five
minutes. What do you need bro?" Renee asked as she gathered some papers off
her desk like she heading to the meeting.
"I need a favor this morning." Ian said using his best puppy dog
look.
"Can it wait? Like I said, I've got a meeting to go to." Renee said
as she got up from her chair.
"When did you schedule this meeting? I just looked at your calendar
before I came in and you were free all day." Ian told her giving her a
questioning look.
"Something just came up and I had to schedule a emergency
meeting. There was a big screw up and I got to go chew some asses out."
Renee said trying to sound angry and rushed but not sure that she was
convincing her brother.
"Your department never screws up. You make sure you hire the best
people and you make pop pay them well. So have a seat and let me beg for
your help." Ian said as he gave her a pleading look.
Renee sighed as she sat down knowing that she was screwed. "Okay
shoot, what do you want me to do this time? Is Ursula changing something
else?" Renee asked hoping that was it but knowing better.
"I wish that was it but no. I need for you to meet with Ms. Martine
today. I've got a splitting headache and I just don't think that I can
handle her bitching today." Ian told her.
"Oh no, you're marketing, she's your department not mine. I'm
finance remember." Renee told him and for the first time she turned down a
request from her brother as there was no way she was going to meet with
that Bitch.
"Please my head is really killing me!" Ian said as he put his hand
to his head as if it was hurting real bad.
"Here's some Tylenol." Renee said as she reached into her desk for a
bottle and threw it to him.
"Okay you got me, I don't have a headache." Ian said as he put the
bottle back onto the edge of Renee's desk. "But I do have a tee off time at
the country club with the owner of the Steck Company and that could mean a
lot of money to the company."
"Just when did you arrange this tee time?" Renee asked.
"About five minutes before you arranged your staff meeting." Ian
said with a smile.
"I thought so and by the way I know that you have already secured
that account. A credit request came through my office last week. You should
know I always have to approve credit requests from new customers. So play
straight with me." Renee told her brother.
Ian smiled at his sister knowing that he could never fool her and he
was stupid for trying. "Okay, I just can't handle her today. I have put up
with her for months and I need a break. Please come through for me sis..."
Ian told his sister and Renee was about to give in when he added, "Remember
you one me for covering for you when mom and pop were out of town and you
went to spend the weekend with Ashley instead of staying home with me like
you were suppose."
"That was when I was in the tenth grade, are you ever going to let
me off the hook on that one?" Renee asked knowing what his answer would be.
"Not as long as you keep letting me use it." Ian said with a
smile. "Please sis, this will be the last time that I use that against you,
I promise."
"I've heard that line before bro and there's always something that
comes along that you decide to use your ace on me." Renee said as she
finally let a smile come to her face. "I'll do it however you owe me big
this time and I will collect."
"Thank you sis, I promise to make it up to you. Anything you want is
yours." He said as he came over and gave her a big hug and then a kiss on
the cheek.
"Get out of here you fool and go play golf as I listen to the
bitch." Renee told him making sure he knew that she was making a sacrifice
for him.
"I do appreciate it sis, I really do." He said as she gave her
another hug and then he left before she had a chance to change her mind.
Renee let out a sigh as she canceled her staff meeting that she
didn't bother to invite anyone too. She was already dreading the meeting
with the women whom she had never seen but whom she had heard more than
enough about. Renee knew that this lady was sharp so she looked up her
companies account. She saw all that they ordered and made herself familiar
with all the different size and types of boxes that her company bought from
them. Lastly she looked at the credits that had been give to Sophie's
company and she was surprised to find that there had been none in the past
year. So she went back further and still no refunds were requested or
granted. With all the complaining that this lady did, there had to be lots
of credits given but there wasn't any. So she called the quality department
to see if there were any official complaints filed. Again she was told that
there had been none. She made her Quality Assurance Manager check again
going back as far as she could, again she got the same answer, Ms.
Martine's company had never filed a quality complaint against their
company. This didn't make sense, if Ms. Martine was so upset about the
quality of products being supplied to her then why didn't they follow up
with an official complaint or at least request credit for the defective
product that they did receive. Renee was completely confused now, she had
no clue as to how to handle this women but she kept this information close
at hand just in case she needed it to use against Ms. Martine. This woman
had made her brother's Thursday's miserable since she had been assigned the
management of inventory at her company about six months ago. She sat and
thought about it for a while then she put the file away until she was
needed.
Right at ten, the receptionist called saying that a Ms. Sophie
Martine was there to see her. Renee started to get up and go to her but
then decided to play it cool so she had the receptionist tell Ms. Martine
to hold on and she would send her assistant for her. She then waited for a
couple of minutes before she told her assistant to go fetch the
"Bitch". Renee then went back to her numbers trying to appear busy when Ms.
Martine arrived. She sensed her assistant and Ms Martine at her door a few
minutes later and she made them wait just another moment as she worked on
an account. After what she thought was sufficient time to make Ms. Martine
wait, she looked up and she wasn't prepared for what she saw. There stood a
beautiful black haired women. She was wearing a mid length skirt and blouse
with a jacket that matched. The woman gave her a smile that just seemed to
take hold of her and wouldn't let go. The woman had full lips and bright
white teeth. Her breasts were small but they fit her slim petite body
perfectly. And her hips flared out giving her that sculptured look. Renee
had never seen a woman so beautiful in all her life and her mouth went
dry. She had to work saliva glands to get enough moisture in her mouth to
talk.
"Hi, I'm Renee, Ian sister, he was tied up today and asked me to
meet with you." Renee said as she got up from her seat to welcome this
beautiful creature into her office. Her assistant slipped out and went back
to her desk not wanting to be anywhere near this lady that was known as
"that bitch".
"It's so nice to meet you Renee, I'm Sophie, I hope that everything
is okay with Ian. I do so enjoy our visits." Sophie said and Renee got the
feeling that Sophie was making a comment about her brother but she wasn't
so sure if it was a compliment or a dig.
"Yes he is fine but there was a conflict in his schedule. He told me
to tell you that he wished that he could meet with you but he felt
confident that I could handle anything that you might need." Renee said as
she went to Sophie to shake her hand.
"I'm sure that you're more than capable of handling any of my
needs." Sophie told her as she gave Renee's hand a extra squeeze that sent
a shiver through Renee's body.
Renee had to tell herself to get her hormones under control as she
took her hand back, "I do hope so. Would you like something to drink?"
Renee said as she went back to her chair.
"Some tea would be nice." Sophie told her and it was then that Renee
realized that Sophie had a slight French accent to her perfect
English. Renee knew there was something about the accent that she didn't
recognize until that moment but then with a name like Sophie Martine, then
a French background shouldn't be unexpected.
"Sure, I'll have my assistant bring it right in." Renee said as she
picked up her phone to tell her assistant what she needed. Renee had no
more hung up the phone that her assistant brought in a tray that had a tea
pot, cup, and some lemon and sugar. She set it down and quickly left.
"I see that you are prepared." Sophie said as she got up before
Renee could and she filled both cups. "Lemon, sugar?" Sophie asked.
"Just sugar please." Renee said as she watched Sophie carefully
place two cubes of sugar into a cup, handing it to Renee.
"Thank you but you didn't have to serve, I believe that was supposed
to be my job, you're the guest." Renee said as she accepted the cup of tea
from Sophie.
"No problem, I've changed your normal schedule, it's the least that
I could do." Sophie said as she sat back down crossing those shapely legs
that drew Renee's eyes. When Renee's eyes returned to Sophie's face she
saw that she was giving her a sweet smile that momentarily took the words
from Renee's mouth. This lady was turning her every which way but
loose. Renee knew that she had to get back into control of this meeting
before she did something that she would regret.
"So what brings you in today? Is there anything that I can help you
with?" Renee asked trying to get her mind back to the business at hand as
she reminded herself just what her brother called this lady.
"I just wanted to touch bases with the company that keeps us moving
our product out. Without boxes then we shut down, so we depend so much on
your company and I have to say that we don't have any complaints. Your
company's quality is first rate." Sophie told her and again Renee wondered
if there were two Sophie's, one that came to see her brother and this one
as she was being as nice as she could be.
"Thank you so much. We do pride ourselves in our quality and our
ability to meet our customers' needs." Renee commented.
"Well you do great with both. I just wish that the rest of our
vendors would match what you can do, then we would be set. But then again
they wouldn't need me so I guess it is better that we have a couple of
suppliers that aren't anywhere near as efficient as your company is."
Sophie said.
"Thank you again, like I said, we do try to meet our customer's
needs." Renee said feeling like she was repeating herself but she didn't
know what else to say. This woman was throwing her for a loop by being so
nice and she kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.
"We do have a couple of new products that we are introducing that we
will need boxes for." Sophie told her and Renee just knew that this was
when Sophie was going to become The Bitch but then she said, "But I'll just
let our packaging engineer get with your engineer and they can work out the
details. We are hoping that this will be a big seller so that will mean a
lot of business for both of our companies."
"That sounds great, we are building an addition and that will ensure
that we will have boxes to build in it. I'll tell Eric to expect your
engineer's call." Renee told her and again she was confused by this
beautiful woman.
"I see from your diploma that you attended Yale, I always wanted to
go to a Ivy league school but my parents couldn't afford it so I went to a
small college in Montreal where I grew up." Sophie asked as she sat back in
her seat obviously not planning on leaving none too soon.
"I didn't realize that you were Canadian. Why did you decide to come
to the US to work?" Renee asked.
"I wanted to go someplace a little warmer. I loved it there and it
will always be home but damn, it's cold." Sophie said and the way she said
it made Renee smile.
"Why didn't you go further south, I mean it is warmer here but
you're still in the northern part of the US here in Ohio. Why didn't you go
on down to Florida or Texas?" Renee asked.
"I wanted to be in a warmer climate but not one that was hot as
hell." Sophie said very seriously.
Renee couldn't help herself as she burst out laughing at Sophie's
remark and then she was afraid that Sophie would be offended by her
outburst of laughter but then she looked at Sophie seeing her face smile
and then she laughed too. Renee realized that Sophie had a sense of humor,
a bit dry but there all the same. "I can understand that."
Renee was surprised by the sudden change of subject but she didn't
want to piss off their best customer so she started to talk about how
pretty the campus was but also how hard the professors were. Renee wanted
to end the conversation as soon as she could but Sophie kept asking
questions so she kept answering them until she finally relaxed and just
started to talk to Sophie. She slowly began to warm up to this beautiful,
sweet, and very sharp women. They talked for about Yale and the university
that Sophie went to for another half hour before Sophie decided that she
had taken enough of Renee's time.
"It was very nice to meet you." Renee said as she got up from behind
her desk and came over to where Sophie was standing.
"It was nice to meet you too, I'll believe that I'll start meeting
with you from now on, that is, if your brother won't mind." Sophie said as
she shook Renee's hand giving it a gentle squeeze that again sent a shiver
through Renee's body which Renee didn't need at this moment.
"Oh I'm sure that he won't mind at all." Renee said knowing that her
brother would be leaping for joy at the thought of not having to meet this
woman again.
"That's great, I would like that." Sophie said then she about
floored Renee with her next question. "By the way, would you like to have
dinner with me tonight? There's this new restaurant that I have been dying
to try out but I hate to eat alone. I have enjoyed our conversation today
so much and would love to continue it tonight. That is if you don't have
any plans or anything."
Renee was trying to think of a way to turn this beautiful lady down
when Sophie gave her that heart stealing smile and Renee heard the words,
"I would love to.", come out of her mouth. Renee then wanted to take them
back but then Sophie placed her small hand on Renee's forearm and she was
lost.
"That's great. I'll pick you up here at five thirty. I look forward
to dinner. Give your brother my best. See you at five thirty." Sophie said
as she turned and went out the door leaving Renee standing there staring at
Sophie's ass that had that gentle sway that wasn't over stated but
definitely got Renee's attention.
She was still standing there when her brother came into her office
asking, "How did it go?"
"I'm going to dinner with her after work." Renee said as she woke up
and walked back to her desk, sitting down with a plop.
"How did that happen?" Ian asked as he sat down in the chair that
was just vacated by Sophie. Renee could see that he was just as stunned by
this development as she was.
"Beats the hell out of me." Renee said as she threw her hands up in
the air.
"What did she do while she was here, hypnotize you?" Ian asked.
"No... Yes... Oh hell I don't know. I was all prepared for her to
come in here bitching and stuff and she instead turned on the charm. She
was as sweet as she could be, telling me about how good our quality was and
also our ability to deliver their boxes to them on time. I was taken
completely off guard. Then she was just so beautiful, you never told me
about that." Renee told her brother now that she had her wits back.
"You're smitten with her aren't you?" Ian said as she stared at
Renee very carefully.
"Oh god no, she's beautiful, I give her that but she's not my type."
Renee said, "And let's get back to you. You said she was a real bitch."
"She is or she was with me. I mean I wasn't lying to you when I said
she was a pain to deal with. I don't know why she changed colors with you
but if that is what it takes to make her happy then you can meet with her
from now on." Ian said.
"Well she did mention that if you didn't mind, she would like
that. I told her that I didn't think that you would." Renee said with a
smile.
"Oh hell no, you can have her if you want. I wash my hands of her."
Ian said and then he sat up in his seat. "But what about dinner
tonight. Are you going to go? You can still cancel if you want. I don't
want you to do anything for this company if you don't want to. I mean I
love to have Sophie's business but not at the price of you doing something
that you're uncomfortable with."
"No I want to go. She was actually very charming and very sharp so
dinner will be fine. I'll go tonight because I said I would and then from
now on I'll keep things to the office." Renee said.
"If you're sure, I know that you can take care of yourself but as
your older brother I have an obligation to worry." Ian said as he started
to get up.
"Duly noted." Renee said with a smile. And then she asked, "What
about that important golf game that you had with the owner of the Steck
Company?"
"Oh he had to cancel." Ian said with a grin.
"Would that be because he is legally blind and doesn't play golf and
in fact hates the game. There was a article in the paper a while back about
him. You need to come up with better excuses from now on bro." Renee told
him as she gave him a wink.
"I should have known that I couldn't fool you but I was desperate."
Ian admitted.
"I know you were, big brother. That was the only reason that I
decided to help you out." Renee told her brother as he made his way out.
Ian got all the way to the doorway before he turned around to face
her. "She wasn't a bitch?" he asked in a disbelieving voice.
"She was as nice as she could be." Renee said with a smile.
"Figures..." Ian said as he turned and went on down toward his
office.
Renee had to smile to herself at her brother's confusion but her
brother's confusion was what she herself was confused about. Sophie had
done an about face with her and she really did want to know the reason for
it. She knew that sometime during the dinner with Sophie, she would get her
answer and she hoped that Sophie would come up with a good one. Renee went
on back to her work however her mind would go back to Sophie making her
stop to think for a moment then she would get her mind back to the numbers
that kept her family's firm afloat.
About twenty after five, Renee started to pack things away and shut
off her computer. The closer it got to five thirty, the more nervous she
became so now she was about a nervous wreck. Once everything was shut down,
she made a stop in the bathroom that was attached to her office to freshen
up and make sure that she looked presentable. She wished that she had time
to run home to take a shower and change clothes. If she had been thinking
properly, she would have suggested a later time so that she could go home
but Sophie had caught her off guard with the invite to dinner that her
quick mind failed her. As she was looking at herself in the mirror, she
realized that she could have just as easily have taken off early and gone
home to change. Then she thought again that if she had on a different
outfit when Sophie came to pick her up then Sophie might think she was
trying to impress her and that she didn't want to do. Besides there was no
way that Sophie would be lesbian or if she was, she wouldn't be interested
in someone who was as plain as she was. She finally put a little lipstick
on and told herself to get a grip. She then went back to her desk to get
her purse and she headed to meet Sophie.
Sophie was waiting for her out front of the building in a old Ford
Taurus. "Hop in." Sophie said as she rolled down the passenger window.
"So how was your afternoon?" Renee asked as she slipped into the car
and shut the door.
"Busy but no major problems so that made it better, plus the
afternoon went by faster." Sophie said as she started the engine and put
the car into gear. "How about your afternoon?" Sophie asked as she looked
over at Renee and smiled.
"Much the same. My day is filled with numbers so there's never a lot
of excitement to my job but I do enjoy it." Renee replied.
"That is all that counts, if you don't enjoy what you do then it
just becomes a job and that gets old very quickly." Sophie said and from
the way she said it Renee sensed that Sophie had been there and done
that. Sophie seemed to get lost in that thought so Renee decided to change
the subject.
"I do have a question for you." Renee told her.
"What's that?" Sophie asked.
"I know being a Supply Management Director for a company as large as
your has to pay pretty good so I was wondering why you would drive a
car..." Renee was saying that Sophie finished the sentence for her.
"...a car this old and out of style?" Sophie said as she flashed her
white teeth at her.
"Yea," Renee said with a laugh.
"This was the first car that I bought when I got out on my own after
college. I have tried to trade it in several times since them but I
couldn't. I love this car for some reason. So I kept driving away from the
car lots in this stupid old car. Finally I stopped trying to trade it in. I
did go and buy a new car but this is the car that I tend to drive most of
the time. If I go out to go somewhere, I find that I almost always end up
in this one. I probably should have taken my other car but like I said I
almost always end up going to this one." Sophie said.
"That's okay, I like this car. It seems to fit you." Renee said and
that made Sophie smile.
They talked as Sophie drove and soon Renee began to realized that
they were traveling out of town. She had grown up here and while it was a
good size city it wasn't a huge one, so she knew that there wasn't any
restaurants in the direction that they were heading. "Just what restaurant
are we going to?" Renee asked.
Renee saw a slight grin come across Sophie's face. "Well... actually
the restaurant is called Sophie's Kitchen. I hope you don't mind but I love
to cook and I rarely get to cook for anyone. Is that okay with you? If you
don't want to then I can turn around and we'll go to a restaurant." Sophie
said as she turned her head to glance at Renee.
Renee knew that she should tell Sophie to turn around but she found
that she was curious about this woman so she said what she knew she
shouldn't, "No that will be fine, I don't get too many home cook dinners."
"Great, I promise I am a pretty good cook, so I don't think you'll
be disappointed." Sophie said as she talked about the dishes that she liked
to cook and she inquired as to what Renee liked. They talked for the next
twenty minutes before Sophie pulled into a little subdivision. All the
homes were modest yet elegant. Sophie made a couple of turns then she went
onto a dead end street. At the end of the street was a very lovely home
that sat up on a little hill. The lot was much larger than any of the
houses located to the sides of it. Renee wasn't surprised that Sophie
pulled into the driveway of that house and the garage door opened.
"We're home, come on in and I'll show you my pride and joy." Sophie
said as she cut the engine off as the garage doors closed.
"I like it already. You got the best lot in the subdivision." Renee
said as she got out of the car.
"I know, I got lucky there. The people that owned it before me got
transferred and needed to sell fast so I snapped it up. Then I redid the
house to suit me. It took me several years but now I have it as I want it."
Sophie said as she opened the door that led into the kitchen.
The first thing that Renee noticed was how pretty it was and then
the delicious odors that hit her. "Oh that smells good. You got me hungry
already." Renee told Sophie as she walked to the center of the kitchen with
a isle that had the sink and hanging light above.
"I took the afternoon off so that I could get the dinner started. I
didn't want to spend half of the evening cooking. This way we can talk as I
finish up then we'll be ready to eat." Sophie told her and Renee began to
wonder why Sophie was going to so much trouble just for her. But before she
could think too much, she felt Sophie grab her hand as she led her through
the rest of the house showing her every room. The more that Renee saw of
the house the more she loved it. It wasn't a big house but Sophie made it
roomy and very comfortable. There wasn't anything splashy about it, yet the
overall effect made the house look like it came off the pages of House and
