The Appalachian Trail

On Virginia's second day at her job at a camp for critically ill
children, she was assigned to take some of the more able children on a
nature hike. Since it was her first time out the camp supervisor assigned
someone to give her a hand and show her the ropes. About that time a very

before but then there was a lot more of the counselors that she hadn't met

they were given a radio with a homing device so that aid could get there

chance to talk as the kids napped and or rested under the shade of a large

in common, they both lived to hiked. It was a passion that that both held

Appalachian Trail.
For the rest of the summer camp, they spent as much time together as
they became best friends. They would help each other out with the kids and
when they had some free time, they spent in on the trails around the
camp. When they went home at the end of the summer they kept in touch by
phone and via the internet. They didn't live close enough together to visit
every day but they were close enough to be able to get together a couple of
times during the fall to do some day hikes. They also discussed what
colleges they wanted to attend the following fall. They only had one in
common as started talked however as time went along their list had more and
more colleges in common. And when it came time for them to pick one, they
naturally chose the same college.
When they got together at Christmas to exchange gifts, Carman brought
up the idea of them hiking the Appalachian Trail during the coming summer
before they went to college. They had both talked about it before but not
very seriously. This time as they talked the dream became more of a
reality. The first part would be the hardest, getting their parents to let
them do it. They both would turn eighteen in May so they could go without
their parent's permission. But they knew that they would need their
parent's support for a few more years and thus it would be in their
interest to get their parent's permission.
They came up with a game plan that included working on their parents
individually and as a team. By the end of March, they had worn their
parents down but there were conditions. They both had to take self-defense
classes and each would carry a cell phone with extra batteries to call home
whenever they could get a signal. They would turn the phones on only when
they needed to make a call to ensure that they would have plenty of battery
power. They would also have to carry mace with them at all times.
Once they got the go ahead, they started to prepare for their long
hike. They planned to start at the end of May, a week after they both
graduated. They would stay on the trail until the 1st of August. They both
bought new hiking boots and wore them all spring to break them in. They

already in. As the time got closer to going, they had long planning
sessions on what to take and where to have shipments of food sent so that

The Wednesday before they were to start out; Carman and her mom came
over to Virginia's house so that the girls could do their last minute

left the house at about six that morning arriving at their starting point
about three hours later. There were long goodbyes and a more than a few

started on their long journey.
Virginia started in the lead with Carman following. There were
markings on the trees that marked the trail and they had a guidebook to go
by. So the person in the lead watched for the markings and the person in
the rear was in charge of the guidebook. They set a rapid pace to start but
after an hour their pace slowed down to one that was more manageable. In
places where the trail was wide enough, they would walk side by side so
that they could talk a little easier.
At about one they stopped and had lunch. They fixed some dried food,
which they decided was eatable but just and an energy bar. They rested a
few minutes taking a picture or two to mark their first dinner on the
trail. They then set back out taking breaks every hour or so or when they
came to a place that would make a great picture. They walked until late
that evening when they found a spot a good ways off the trail where they
could set up camp. They fixed their dinner and relaxed for a few minutes
then Carman went off to find a stream the guidebook said was nearby as
Virginia set up the small tent. When Carman returned, Virginia had their
stuff put up so that no little varmints would eat their food during the
night. They then crawled into their tent with Virginia going first. Once in
the tent, they took off their boots, placing them at the foot of the tent
where they could air out. They both put took off their shorts leaving them
