the receipts in order then Maggie saw her taking each one in order then
putting it upside down in a new pile. When she was done she gave Maggie the
total.
"You added all of those in your head?" Maggie asked.
"Sure it's just addition." Brandie said as she looked at Maggie. You
going to write that down or do you want to add it up to make sure?"
"No I believe you." Maggie said as she learned something more about
Brandie's intelligence. So Maggie put that number down then she started to
give Brandie more receipts to put together.
They worked together on Maggie's tax returns with Brandie pointing
out a mistake every time that she saw Maggie enter something wrong. "Do you
want to do this?" Maggie said as Brandie had her head almost in front of
her face so that she could barely see the papers she was working on.
"Sure," Brandie said as she took the papers from Maggie and she
started to fill out all the forms. Brandie was working a lot faster than
she could and she only had to read over something once in the Tax booklet
before she started to put the figures down. It still took them all
afternoon to get it done but that was better than the three days it usually
took Maggie to get it done.
"See how easy that was." Brandie said as she gave Maggie a pen, "All
you got to sign and we'll be done."
"I can't believe that we got it done so quickly." Maggie said as she
took the pen and she put her name to the return.
"Have you ever done a tax return before?" Maggie asked as she sat
back.
"First one, but they are interesting and we made a nice little
profit this year didn't we..." Brandie said.
Maggie noticed the "we" and how Brandie left it hanging out
there. "Yes we did, we did real well. I need to put a part of it into a
account for you. You've earned it." Maggie told her.
"No leave it where it is. If I want something then I'll let you know
and we can decide if we can afford it." Brandie told her.
"Is there anything that you want? You never ask for anything and I
admit that I haven't asked and I should have." Maggie said.
"When I was in all those foster homes there were lots of things I
saw the other kids in school had and I wanted them too. But now that I'm
here and I knew that if I asked for something you would have gotten it for
me then getting them wasn't so important." Brandie told her as she got them
another bottled water from the fridge.
"Well be sure to tell me if you do or just go get it
yourself. You've signed for stuff all over town for me and everyone knows
you so it's cool, or just get my credit card and use it." Maggie told her.
"Well there is one thing I could use..." Brandie said.
"What's that baby?" Maggie asked as she turned to Brandie.
"We need two cell phones and that way we can keep in touch with each
other." Brandie said.
"That's a good idea. There has been times that I wanted you to do
something when I was out in the fields working. Since you got our returns
done so fast, let's go and get you one." Maggie said as she got up to go
get her purse. She noticed that Brandie was smiling at her like she had
something up her sleeve.
Brandie insisted on driving so Maggie got into the passenger side of
the truck. She drove them into town, first stopping at the little store
where Maggie had gotten her phone. It was a lesser know cellular provider
but it served Maggie's needs as she wasn't much for using a phone.
"I'll be right back." Brandie said as she grabbed Maggie's old phone
and she jumped out of the truck before Maggie could react. This left Maggie
thinking that she didn't really need to come along but she wanted to be
there when Brandie got her phone and now Brandie just left her out of
it. She hated to admit it but it kind of hurt her feelings. A couple of
minutes later, Brandie came out of the store carrying Maggie's old phone
and as far as she could see that was the only phone that Brandie had on
her.
"Where's your new phone?" Maggie asked trying to hide the fact that
she was hurt by Brandie's action.
"Didn't get one." Brandie said as she backed the truck out.
"Then why did you go into the store?" Maggie asked.
"I had to shut down your service so we can get a better provider and
newer phones. The one you have barely picks up and it is older than I am."
Brandie said.
"You did what?" Maggie said shocked that Brandie would do such a
thing without asking her.
"I told them that we decided to go with another cellular service and
they didn't seem to be too surprised. They said that they understood. I was
real nice about it but you do need something much better than what they
could provide." Brandie said not looking at her.
"Don't you think you should have asked me first?" Maggie asked now
no longer hurt but more than a bit irritated and getting real close to
being pissed.
"I did ask and you said that I could have one, but I didn't want
anything that they had, I want something new and you'll have to get a new
one too so that we are with the same provider." Brandie said explaining in
her perfectly sounding logic.
Maggie wanted to say something to contradict her but then she got a
better idea, she would deal with this tonight. "So where are we going to
get our new phones?"
"That big cell phone store in the mall." Brandie said happily.
"Why doesn't that surprise me." Maggie said as she let herself smile
knowing what she had planned for her little friend.
When they got to the store, Brandie dragged her to the newest
phones. Maggie was overwhelmed with all the chooses that were there and the
different providers and the different plans that each had. Maggie had kept
up with all the new stuff when she was in college but since she had been
working on the farm, a whole new revolution had occurred in the cell phone
business that she wasn't aware of. She had see some of the stuff on TV when
she got a chance to watch it but she didn't do much of that until Brandie
came along and even then she had found herself paying more attention to
Brandie than the TV. Anyway Brandie kept giving her all these new cell
phones that did everything when she just wanted something that she could
talk with and nothing else. She resisted for a while but then she saw that
she was taking away from Brandie's excitement so she let Brandie talk her
into a phone that did more things than she thought that she would ever
use. It would store and play music as well as getting to the internet and
of course sending messages. That she couldn't ever see herself ever using
but she let Brandie talk her into getting the whole package for both of
them. So they got their phones and Maggie was able to use her old number.
They shopped around for the rest of the evening, then on the way
back, Brandie had Maggie drive as she started to program all the numbers
that Maggie had stored in her old phone and put them into the new one. Then
she put it into the car charger as she started to work on her new
phone. She was talking excitedly as she did the programming. By the time
that they got home, their phones had a partial charge on them. It was
getting late by then, so Maggie checked on the cattle as Brandie petted the
dogs, before heading inside. Brandie insisted that they keep their phones
on them at all times so that they would never be far apart. Maggie went on
into the bedroom to start getting ready for bed as Brandie locked the doors
and started to turn off the lights.
Maggie gave Brandie a couple of minutes then she picked up her phone
and after studying it a moment, she remember how to make a call and she
called Brandie's phone.
"You know I'm in the house, you can just call out to me." Brandie
said as she answered her phone.
"Oh I know but I decided that since I got a new phone, then I should
use it." Maggie told her.
"Oh okay well I'm glad that I'm the first person that you called. So
do you need anything from the kitchen while I'm here?" Brandie asked.
Maggie couldn't ask for a better opening, "Well there is something
that you can bring with you."
"What's that?" Brandie asked,
"Bring one of the kitchen chairs into the bedroom as you come."
Maggie said.
"Why?" Brandie asked as her voice went up a pitch or two.
"Just bring it when you come." Maggie said as she closed her phone
thus ending the conversation.
