Chapter One

The early morning air was heavy. Dew listened on the blades of the
fresh cut grass. The field lines had been freshly painted and new nets
hung in each goal. Standing at the endline were a group of women trying out
for of the Weston University soccer team.

"Ready!" The shout carried across the field from the far
sideline. The whistle blew and the team went running to the opposite end
line. Keegan Garry slowed her pace as she crossed the line. Her leg
throbbed.

"On the line!" One of the assistant coaches yelled. The whistle
sounded again. The group took off again. She crossed the line and put her
hands on top of her short dirty blonde hair. She could feel the sweat
saturating her tank top and the waistband of her shorts. As she paced in a
circle and tried to catch her breath she observed her teammates. This team
was going to run. Hard work was something that Keegan had been use to.

In the last few months she had conditioned hard to get ready for
tryouts. Her life on campus life started on Sunday afternoon went her Dad
dropped her off for school. A hot, humid, blistering July afternoon in
Michigan was the best way to describe her first day on the campus of Weston
University. The summer camp was mandatory for all new players. Bill, her
father had driven with her the two a half-hours from Saginaw. They had done
this drive a number of times in the last year. The first time was to meet
with Coach Rob Curtis, the women's soccer coach. Curtis had recruited
Keegan heavily in the fall of her senior year. Although Weston was a great
school, universities with programs that led to NCAA championships and
playoffs were recruiting Keegan. The scholarship promises were plentiful.
Keegan had been a prodigy soccer star. The last few years of club play had
made her well known and highly recruited. Her high school team had done
well, but they did not make it past the regionals.

Her path to collegiate soccer changed the week of Thanksgiving
break. She was involved in a devastating car accident. The scholarship
offers from universities were pulled back. Weston with Curtis was the only
school that did not doubt Keegan's return to the field.

Classes were starting in three weeks. There would be a week
between camp and practice starting. This would be the only break Keegan
would get until the season finished some time in November. Bill wanted to
stay to watch camp, but Keegan didn't want him to. He was leaving after
she was settled. The school had put the incoming students up in the
athletics dorm.

With Bill at her side, she walked into the athletic building. The
building was massive with sleek perpendicular lines. The glass atrium
reflected the afternoon sun on the inside plants. They had been there
during the spring but the building still was overwhelming. Outside the
Athletic Director's office stood a line of registering athletes. While they
waited, Keegan watched the interactions of people in the lobby. Catching
Keegan attention was a young woman leaning on the wall talking with an
older man. She was a tall blonde with a medium build. Her short shorts
showed off a nice summer tan. Her legs were long and muscular. Pair Nike
sandals were on her feet. Keegan could see that she did not have nail
polish on her toes. Keegan liked that fact. Not that she was an expert or
that she was a firm believer, but most lesbians did not wear toe nail
polish.

The blonde smiled and laughed with the older man. She was
attractive. Not skinny tall super model skinny, but healthy looking and
sure of herself. Keegan felt the twinge of desire sweep through her loins.
No more straight girls or closet cases, Keegan thought to herself. The
relationship she had with Sandy has taught her that lesson. The last thing
Keegan wanted to do was start chasing after some girl that would have
baggage.

Her senior year of high school, she and Sandy's three-year
relationship ended. Keegan was tired of hiding and putting up with Sandy's
crap. Thanksgiving break changed her life. At a party, Keegan watched a
guy grope Sandy's breast and press up against her with a hard on. She had
enough.

"You got to stop this. You're driving me crazy." Keegan told her
as she pulled Sandy away from the guy.

	"Keegan, chill out."
"I won't. I am tired of this." Keegan kissed Sandy on the lips in
front of all their friends and classmates. Sandy pushed her away and
franticly looked around. "I love you."

"Bitch!" Sandy gripped her by the hand and led her outside the
party. "What do you think you are doing? We had a good thing. You have
just ruined it. Why? Why Keegan? In front of everyone?"

"I love you." Keegan pleaded with her girlfriend. "What is so
wrong with that? What are you just fucking around with me until Mr. Right
comes along?"

"I'm sure as shit not waiting for Ms. Right!" Sandy got in the car
and sat there for a moment. Keegan got in the passenger's side. "You
ruined everything." Sandy said as she started the car. They drove for a
bit. They were fighting. They were always fighting.

Keegan replayed the scene in her head. There was snow on the
ground. A snowstorm came out of nowhere. Sandy drove fast and erratic.
Crossing the centerline into oncoming traffic, she quickly corrected and
pulled the car too fast on the wet snow cover road. She lost control of
the car as it slid across the pavement and into a guardrail.

Keegan had been told that the car flipped more than once, when she
woke in the hospital three days later. She had a concussion and a compound
break in her upper right leg. The broken bone had come through the skin
and surgery had been done to repair it. She had metal screws and pins
sticking in and out of her thigh. Six stitches had been needed to close
the cut on her forehead. A week after the accident, all of her athletic
scholarship chances had been suspended except for one. The athletic
directors wanted to see if she would recover from her injuries. Weston was
the only school that left the scholarship on the table for her.

"Ready!" The shout repeated. The women lined up on the goal
line. The whistle blared. As she crossed the opposite line, she glanced
around at the other athletes trying out. Most of them were gasping for air
in the hot July morning. Faces were flush and beads of sweat shining in
the morning sun. At the other end of the line was the girl from the lobby,
she was tired but she seemed to be in great shape. Her hair was pulled back
tight in a ponytail. She was sweating but she did not breathe as hard as
the rest of the group. Keegan was shorter and fast. The months of rehab did
give her an advantage, she was in great shape. She ran with ease and kept
pace for the most part. At times, the burst of speed would kick in and she
would reach the ball first.

Keegan's thoughts turned back to the registration process. The
tall blonde was there. "Name." The girl at the desk called as she and Bill
stood in line. Keegan stepped up.

"Keegan Garry." She cringed at the sound of her own name. She
hated her name. Bill smirked and knew this fact bothered her. Her name
was Gaelic. Her grandmother had named her, little fiery one. The
translation of her name was true resemblance of her personality. Since she
had been little, she had always caused a ruckus. The first week of
kindergarten her mother was called into the office. She was almost
expelled for her behavior. In the fifth grade, she was the only girl on
the boy's soccer team. Her teammates teased and taunted her because she was
female. One day after being teased most of practice, she let the soccer
ball fly into Steven Clark's nuts the day he called her a bitch. She showed
great potential and was quickly asked to play on the traveling girl's team.
After that she was on AAU teams. As the seasons passed on she was
recruited to play on all of the prestigious teams.

Bill always said that she could have been named after him. She did
not think she could pass for a Bill. She was only five foot four, but she
stood taller especially on the field. Her hair which had been just past
shoulder's length was now in a spiky cropped cut that let her blue eyes
shine.

The months of rehab made her body lean and tone She notice that as
she lifted weights, her arms became firm and muscular. Although she was
close to a hundred and forty pounds, most of the weight was from the
muscles. She could tell in the difference in the way that her clothes fit
her. She looked like a little boy with her baggy shirts and pants. She
hadn't been wearing baggy clothes lately. She chose a wardrobe of tank tops
and crop shirts with hip hugger shorts. She like her breasts to be a little
bigger but they had lost a little size in them from lifting. When she put
on her old soccer shorts they practically fell off her. Bill said she
looked like him from behind with the baggy butt. She and her Mom, Sarah
went shopping for smaller sizes before she left for camp.

Leaning on the desk, Keegan scanned the tall blonde again. She spotted her
at the side counter filling out paperwork. The blond caught her looking
and said hi. Keegan just nodded hello. She looked at Bill. He looked
over his shoulder and looked at the spot where the girl was. He shook his
head at his daughter.

After the accident Keegan had told her parents she was gay. She told the
truth about the relationship she had with Sandy. Bill had known. Sarah on
the other hand was upset and did not understand. She questioned Keegan
about Michael MacDouglas. Keegan and Michael had been dating on and off
since grade school. She and Michael found it more comfortable to be friends
and not question why they never took the relationship farther than holding
hands in the hallway. Keegan knew he was gay. Michael would have to
choose his own path. Michael backed away from her after the accident. He
did not want to have his own sexuality questioned.

"Okay, here is the schedule. You are in room 414. Your roommate has
already checked in. " The girl gave Keegan a strange look. " The
university will provide a continental breakfast and lunch. You are
responsible for dinner. Practice starts at 7:00 am sharp. Lunch is during
the first break. Depending on the mood, you should be out of practice
anywhere from three to five. Questions?" The woman sounded as if she was
irritated of repeating herself all afternoon. Keegan shook her head no.
"Quiet one. Here is your key. Good Luck" She pointed to the dorm across
the quad. "Next." The girl called out.

Keegan and Bill took the forms and outside on the paved area. Keegan
shuffled through the paperwork the girl handed to her. There were team
rules and the schedule of practices, scrimmages and games. Practices were
five days a week. Bill took a seat on a shaded bench.

"That girl was cute." Bill teased her.

"Dad, I am here for an education. That is the main thing. Soccer is
second. My love life is not a subject I want to discuss at this moment."
Bill gestured for Keegan to sit next to him. She looked like her father.
His hair had turned a darker brown with specks of gray here and there.
Keegan was more of the lighter, dirty blond that used to be a towhead when
she was little. She colored or lightened it depending on her mood. She
came home with fire engine red and Bill made her change it immediately.
They shared the same blue eyes and slight nose. He messed up her
short-cropped hair with his hand. He knew she hated when he did it. Her
head had been shaved in the hospital to close the cut on her temple. A
scar from six stitches could be seen if she pulled her hair back. Keegan
thought about growing it out but she loved having short hair. It was
easier to have low maintenance hair. The style it was easy to care for.
With the summer heat, she noticed appreciated the style more.

"Don't push yourself." Bill told her as they sat together in the shade.
"I know you will, but its my job a parent to tell you that. I don't want
to see you hurt. You have made such progress." Keegan thought about what
she had gone through to get to this point. She was in rehab everyday. Her
body screamed with the pain and the healing process. Each day she would go
to therapy. She remember what an accomplishment it had been to peddle the
fitness bike all the way around. She had started with swinging her foot in
small motions. She advanced to half moons. With hard work, she finally
was able to peddle the bike all the way around on her own. Her focus had
been on getting back to playing. Those scouts that treated her like gold.
Taking her on trips to campuses. Setting the family up in Executive suites
and lavish dinners to persuade her to play for their school. They were not
there during the difficult times. Curtis visited her in the hospital. She
could tell he was stressed out but he affirmed his decision.

"I want to play. I've done everything to get here. To get back on
the field and prove I can do this. I owe it to myself. To Curtis, he went
out on a limb for me. "

"You don't have to play. You can just go to school." Bill leaned
on his bare knees. "Kee, I just want to make sure your okay."

"Dad, I am okay. I have the clearance. It's been eight months
since the surgery. I want to try. This is my goal. If I don't, I would
always question what could have been." Keegan stood up in
frustration. "Things happen for a reason. You and Mom always say that.
The wreck happened for a reason. Playing will be good for me."

"Eight months is not a long time. Maybe you should sit out a
year."

"Listen here Bill," Keegan put her foot on the bench. She made
sure that it was the leg with her scar. The scar was a consent reminder of
the surgery and the accident. There were ugly red blotchy, bumpy lines
that ran from the middle of her thigh and disappeared under her short line.
"This topic has been discussed and as a family, we have decided that it is
going to happen." Sarah, Keegan and her two sisters, Megan and Ashley had
outvoted Bill. Bill flung his hands up in defense.

"Damn women." He muttered under his breath as he got to his feet.

From the twenty-yard line, Keegan had a shot on goal that sizzled
into the back of the net. "That's the only one you're getting Vanilla!"
Tara, the goalkeeper yelled at Keegan. The phrase summed up how Keegan met
her roommate, Tara Washington. She and Bill had gone to the car to get her
bags. Making there way up the stairs to the forth floor of the dorm, they
could hear loud rap music playing. The closer they got to the forth floor
the louder the music got.

"I have a bad feeling." Keegan said as she open the door from the
stair well to the common room. As they approached room, 414 the music was
blaring from behind the door. Keegan rolled her eyes towards her father as
she open the door with her key.

"What ya want?" A tall black girl with braids yelled at her as she
walked into the room. "Who are you?"

"Hi. I'm Keegan. I'm your roommate."

"You're my nothin' Vanilla." She jerked her head back into a
defensive position. Keegan smelled smoke. Although the girl wasn't
smoking it was apparent that she had been. The girl looked at Bill "What's
up?" She spoke to Bill.

"Honey, let's get you settled and grab something to eat. I want to
get back by nine." Bill looked over at his daughter's roommate. "Your
welcome to join us for dinner. Ahhh?"

"Tara. Got plans." The girl went back to bouncing to the baseline
of the latest Trick Daddy CD.

Keegan started to unpack her clothes. She opened the dresser drawers and
saw that her roommate had placed clothes in both dressers. Keegan scooped
them up and set them on top of the dresser that was her roommates. Bill
helped finish unpacking as Keegan made her bed. She was settled in within
a half-hour. She took out a couple of photos and placed them on the
dresser. One was of the family. The other was taken at the Homecoming
dance with Sandy in the Queen's crown and Michael and Keegan's arms wrapped
around her.

"That's interesting." Bill made the comment as he looked at the
photo of Keegan's homecoming.

"Ready?" Keegan asked him. She was ready to get out of the room.

"Nice to meet you." Bill said Tara as he exited behind his
daughter. Neither Bill nor Keegan said anything until the elevator door
shut.

"She is going to shank me in my sleep." Keegan leaned her head on
the elevator door. "Dad, she was smoking. There is no way I will survive a
week."

"Maybe you should talk to Curtis?" Bill suggested as the elevator
stopped. The elevator dinged as the door's opened on the second floor.
The blonde from the lobby walked on with the older man, another female
co-ed and a couple. Keegan moved closer to Bill and away from the
fair-haired girl. She said hello again. Keegan nodded a greeting to her
again. The other girl turned and looked Keegan up and down. She turned
around and ignored her. They got off at the main level. Bill held the
door open for everyone.

"Thank you." The blonde and the couple replied.

"Sure. Do you folks know where there is a decent restaurant in the
area?" Bill got the directions to a near by place.

"Smooth Dad." Keegan could still feel the redness in her
cheeks. "Smooth."

When Gwen got back from dinner, Tara was still playing her hard
core rap music. The room was filled with smoke. Feeling her frustration
building, Keegan went outside. Bill had gone home and she did not know
what to do. She sat in the quad and called Sarah and let her know what was
going on. Keegan knew she was on the verge of tears as she spoke with her
mother. She tried to remain positive thinking about how far she had come.
Tara Washington and she were going to have it out before the end of week.

She needed to settle down. The quad was a quiet place where she
could think. Not many students were on campus. Mainly athletes for the up
coming fall season. Keegan sat on the grass with her back pressed against
a large maple tree. She watched the coming and goings of students and
parents. She saw the blonde from the lobby walking back to the dorm with
the girl from the elevator. They seemed to be engaged in a heated
conversation. The blonde stopped to get in the other girl's face. The
older girl put her hands in the air as if to surrender. She began to back
away. The blonde pointed and gestured for her to leave as she entered the
dorm. The other girl went back the way she had come from. Keegan watched
as the blonde waited a moment before she stepped back outside the dorm.
The blonde hid behind the side of the entranceway and leaned against the
dorm wall. Keegan watched her. She seemed upset as her hand was against
her eyes hiding them. Her body hunched forward. Fighting off the
temptation to go see if she was all right, Keegan continued to watch her.

In a couple of minutes, Keegan gathered her courage to walk back to
the dorm. She was sure if it was to confront Tara or to see if the blonde
was all right. Keegan got closer to the entrance and she noticed the
blonde wiping at her eyes.

"Hey are you okay?" Keegan surprised herself by speaking with the
blonde. The girl gave a short laugh and nodded to Keegan. "Are you sure?"

"I am okay. Thanks for asking." The blonde seemed to pull herself
together. They walked into the dorm together. Keegan looked back at the
blonde with the blue eyes.

"Are you sure you are okay?"

"Yeah, I was having a moment. If you get bored there is a group of
us on the second floor. We are not quite as loud as the fourth floor."
They walked into the dorm and up the first flight of stairs together. The
blonde opened the door to the second floor. Keegan continued to the forth
floor.

She walked into the room. Tara was on the bed her legs stretched out.
Keegan walked up to the boom box and turned it off. Keegan turned and
waited for the tall black girl to confront her.

"What the hell Vanilla!" Tara screamed out as she got to her feet. Keegan
stood her ground.

"You need to use headphones." Keegan's tone was calm. "Can we find a common
ground?"

"The only common ground we have " Tara gestured with her fingers between
Keegan and herself. "Is the ground I am gonna bury you in." Tara flipped
the CD player back out. The loud noise was deafening. Keegan flicked it
off. "Vanilla you are getting on my last nerve. Be a good white girl and
find something else to do."

"Fuck you." Keegan challenged her. Tara took a couple of steps towards
the smaller girl. "You need to mellow out. This is an opportunity for
you. And you're blowing it. You must miss home because your gonna be
there tomorrow if you keep this shit up."

"Fuck you Vanilla you better hope you got game." Tara flipped the CD
player back on. Keegan turned it down. Tara looked back at her. She did
not protest the volume as she went and sat on her bed. Keegan grabbed her
clothes and headed to the shower. She wasn't sure what had just happened
but she would never say that Tara backed down. Keegan went into the
bathroom. Each of the room had its own shower. Tara's crap was spread
across the small space. Keegan took a shower and headed to bed. As she
slipped between the covers she heard.

"Your gonna have long day tomorrow, Vanilla." Tara hissed. Turning her
back to the wall, Keegan spent most of night trying to stay awake.

Keegan had a shot on goal from the corner of the box. The ball zoomed past
Tara for Keegan's second goal. Tara had taken a beating in the goal most of
the morning. She may have been tall, she was not quick and her intuition
had been off. She showed her frustration showed as Keegan scored a second
goal.

"Vanilla! You suck." Tara yelled as she kicked the ball at
Keegan's head. Keegan dodged the ball that had been kicked at
her. Ignoring the remark, she had been called "vanilla" more in the last
twelve hours than she had been her entire life. She noticed the coaches did
not care for the nickname. Tara was pulled from the goal and made to do
stairs in the stadium.

"Are you okay?" The blonde appeared at her side. Keegan glanced
up at her concern looking face.

"I've been called worse." Keegan shrugged her shoulders.

"Me too." The woman jogged off to her next drill.

The blonde conveyed a presence about her. She was attractive, but she had
a certainty about her. Keegan tried to remember her name. It was something
simple but not that common. The whistle sounded again.

"Get a good nights sleep ladies, you will need it tomorrow!" The assistant
coach had gathered the group into a circle at the end of
practice. "Tomorrow we will split the squads for scrimmages."

Keegan went to her bag and started to throw her things inside. Her socks
were saturated with sweat. She looked up and saw Tara staring at her. She
was not feeling comfortable. She had scored on Tara and the senior
goalkeeper a couple of times today. She was just waiting to see what would
happen back at the dorm.

"Garry!" The coach called over to Keegan. Being separated from the group
was a rare occasion especially for an incoming freshman. Keegan ran over
to the dark haired full moustache coach. "Pack your stuff. We are moving
you out of your room." He nodded his head towards the tall
blonde. "Lerner!" He waved over the tall blonde. "Garry's moving her stuff
to your dorm room. Keegan if there is any other issues in the future, you
let me know. How's the leg holding up?"

Keegan pulled her short back and heard the blonde gasp. She looked at her
oddly "It looks worse than it feels. It's good, a little tight. We will
see how it holds up under full contact."

"Good let me know if you need a break."

"I do not need another break." Keegan flashed him a smile. "What room?"
She turned and addressed the tall blonde.

"Two-forty four. It's on the end by the stairs." She was still looking at
Keegan's leg. When she realized she was staring, she turned red. "I can
help you."

"Cool. I would appreciate it." Keegan looked towards Tara. She was still
running stairs. "I'd like to do this now if possible." The blonde looked
towards the goalie and nodded.

Both women gathered their duffel bags, changed into sandals and started to
walk back towards the dorm. The campus was rich with trees and shrubs a
light breeze cooled the afternoon heat. The athletic complex had been
redone three years ago. Its distinct lustrous design was the envy of every
school on the conference. Keegan could feel her leg throbbing and knew she
over did it. She tried to keep up with the taller girl's gait. Keegan
felt herself slowly falling behind the blonde. She realized that she was
staring at the girls' ass and long legs. She kicked herself in gear and
caught up with her.

"I'm really sorry about this but."

"Oh don't even think about it that other girl was a freak. One day away
from home and she was gone."

"No..I" Keegan started to explain.

"Are you friends with her? I am really sorry about the freak comment."

"Stop." Keegan had to yell at the girl. They stopped walking and stood
looking at one another. "I can't remember your name. I know it's common.
I have a bad memory." Keegan looked down at her foot embarrassed that she
had to ask the woman's name again.

"Gwen. Gwen Lerner." The blonde flipped her bag farther up on her
shoulder and stuck out her hand. "Nice to meet you. You're Keegan Garry."
The blonde knew her name. Keegan nodded shocked by the knowledge. "I
heard you got the roommate from hell."

"I thought she was from Detroit? Thanks you for taking me in." Keegan
thought about the last night and today. "Let's just say I haven't gotten
muuch sleep" Keegan said as she continued in step with Gwen. Keegan tried
to lighten the mood with a smart-ass comment. The blonde smiled.

"Oh you are going to be a handful." The blonde stood up and gave Keegan a
half smile. "I saw you play in the regions verse Lancing."

"We lost." Keegan thought back to her last game. "That was a long time
ago."

"You had a great goal." The blonde fixed her ponytail. Keegan could not
help but notice her shapely breasts as her shirt tighten across her chest.
"Curtis and group from Weston were there."

"Really, I didn't know Weston was there." Keegan remember the goal she
scored. She recalled other schools recruiters were at the game. She
remembered Sandy being upset about not getting played until the last minute
of the game. "Wow." Keegan was embarrassed she did not even know Weston
was at the game. Curtis had never said anything to her. She became
preoccupied with the thoughts of snubbing Curtis at the game. She had been
so concern about the bigger schools. "Thanks." She was humbled by Gwen's
comment.

Gwen held open the door for Keegan to enter. They walked up to the forth
floor where Keegan's room was. Gwen grabbed the suitcase out of the
closet. Keegan bumped into her as she reached for the clothes that where
hanging up. They started to laugh. "I'll get this stuff. You get the
clothes that are in the drawers." Gwen said as she set the suitcase on the
bed. Keegan began to pull her clothes from the bureau. She was thankful
that she was packing her underwear. Most of her clothes were still folded
and set neatly in the drawers.

Within twenty minutes, they had packed her things and were lugging the
bags and suitcase down two flights of stairs. Gwen took her key out and
opened the room door. Gwen's side of the room looked youthful and
energetic there was a colorful spread on the bed. Pictures of her family
and previous teams were on the dresser. She had curtains and a rug that
matched the spread. The other side was empty and drab. Keegan did not feel
like pulling out her sheets and making her bed. She was so tired. She did
not want to unpack. Her leg hurt, she was hungry, tired and wanted a
shower.

"Do you want to shower first?" Gwen asked. Keegan was so relieved to not
have to share the shower with Tara. The girl was in the bathroom forever
leaving a mess each time.

"No go ahead. I'm the one invading you." Keegan said as she sat on the
mattress. Gwen stripped off her shirt and shorts. "Hey.." Keegan went
into questioning what Gwen was doing.

"Does this bother you?" Gwen stood up and looked towards Keegan. Her body
was great. She had a flat stomach, breasts that where a little bigger than
Keegan. Her sports bra did not leave much to the imagination. She had on
high cut bikini panties that revealed her well-shaped ass.

"I just .." Keegan began to say something. "No, it doesn't bother me."
Keegan answered honestly. The fact was watching Gwen strip out of her
clothes was very appealing to her. "I think that I am still going through
the Tara trauma." Keegan turned her attention away from her new roommate
and back to her task of unpacking.

As soon as Gwen shut the bathroom door behind her, Keegan collapsed on the
mattress. It was going to be a long week, Keegan thought of the sight of
Gwen Lerner in her bra and underwear.
