Alicia's Comeuppance
Part Two

"You don't know anything you fucking bitch. You've lost nothing but
material things and that is nothing, do you hear me...nothing. There are
women out there who have had to watch their child slowly die of cancer
powerless to do anything but hold the child and cry, women who have lost
their best friend to a war we should not be fighting, women who have had to
make their own way since they were fourteen. Women who had men beat the
shit out of them over and over again and they are afraid to leave for fear
of their life and that fear is what ends up killing them. When you have
suffered some of these types of things then you just might and I say might
have a right to bemoan your fate in life and weep away your life. But until
then you are going to get up off your ass and actually start looking for a
job." Kellie Jo spit at her as she got right down in her face.
"But I have been looking for a job." Alicia lied trying to get
Kellie Jo away from her before she did start to kick her ass. However she
found that lying to Kellie Jo wasn't such a good idea.
"You've been looking for a job..." Kellie Jo spit out just before
she went to the desk grabbing the laptop not bothering to unplug it. She
brought it with her as the plug came out and she held it about three inches
from Alicia's face. "If you've been looking for a job then why are the
hairs that I tied around your computer still intact? Answer me that, you
spoiled little bitch?"
Alicia looked at her black laptop with a string of her own hair
tired around. She knew she was screwed and there was only one thing she
could do was attack back. "You had no right to do that to me. That laptop
is my property!"
"I had every right! You are living here and you told me that you
were looking for a job and you lied to me and I hate people who lie and
that makes you just a fucking liar. You have to earn people's trust and you
haven't even tried to do that." Kellie Jo yelled to her.
Alicia was grasping at something to come back at Kellie Jo with as
she was making all valid points that Alicia knew she was guilty of so she
went back to the only thing that she could think of that would get to
Kellie Jo. "And you're still poor white trash!"
Alicia had always been a quick learner in life but that trait failed
her this day as when she looked back into Kellie Jo's eyes, she saw that
fire again and she was afraid. This time she saw Kellie Jo take her hand
back but she was powerless to move so she watched as Kellie Jo back handed
her striking her right cheek causing her head to explode once again. She
was already sitting on her ass so this time she just had to fall onto her
back. She looked up at Kellie Jo who was standing over her and she knew
that Kellie Jo was going to kill her. Of that she now had no doubt. Then a
peaceful feeling came over her as she knew that her struggles would soon be
over. However Kellie Jo had a move evil plan for her and death would just
be too easy for her.
Alicia saw Kellie Jo holding her laptop and she figured that she was
going to be killed with it but instead it was thrust it into her hands.
"Take this." She screamed at her and as Alicia did so she felt
Kellie Jo grab her by her tee shirt pulling her to her feet in a seemly
easy motion. She then grabbed her by the back of her tee shirt forcing her
to the desk then she pushed her down into the seat causing her to land hard
once again on her ass which was sore from the first time she landed on it.
Kellie Jo put her face inches from Alicia's face and she screamed
"Now get to work!"
Alicia tried to look at Kellie Jo but her right eye was now blurring
on her and her left one was about swollen shut from the first time that
Kellie Jo hit her. From what little she could see, Kellie Jo's eyes were
still shooting flames from them so she quickly turned away opening the
laptop more from feel than sight. She hit the start button, and tried to
focus on the screen but that was hard to do. She felt Kellie Jo walk away
and she was glad to have that monster away from her. She was straining to
see the screen, as she typed in her password. She heard Kellie Jo come back
toward her and she tensed up fearing what she would do to her next.
But what came next surprised her as Kellie Jo's voice had the
kindness that she once remembered it having, "Here place this on your eye,
before it swells completely shut." Then she felt Kellie Jo placing ice
wrapped in a soft towel tenderly on her sore eye cheek.
Alicia wanted to say, "No thanks to you." But she didn't, instead
she said "Thank you."
Alicia turned back to her computer as she tried to see the computer
through one blurry eye and type with one hand as the other hand was holding
the ice to her left eye then moving it to her right cheek which was hurting
as much as her left one. She heard Kellie Jo slamming things around in the
kitchen so she knew that she was still pissed at her but at least she was
being pissed at her in the kitchen and not beside of her.
Alicia went through her email, deleting most of them as they were
old and even if that did have something to offer her, it was too late to
reply now. Any other time this would have sent her to the bed wanting to
get away from the rejection but things had changed. If she would have taken
the time to think about why it had changed she wouldn't have been able to
give an accurate answer. It might have been the fear of god that Kellie Jo
had just put into her or it might have been the realization that after all
these longs months, she had finally had reached the true bottom to her life
and it could only go up from her as there was no further to fall.
Once she had cleaned up her email, she knew that whatever she had
been doing before had obviously not worked so maybe a new strategy was in
order. But the problem was, just what that strategy should look like. She
first tried for only the best jobs and that didn't work, then she went for
any job and that didn't work either. She sat there looking at her computer
and tried to think of what she should do. She began to smell food cooking
in the kitchen and that made her hungry which surprised her. This did
distract her some but it also helped in that between holding the ice to her
cheeks and thinking about her empty belly, a thought came to her. She
needed to go after jobs that she had proven herself at. She needed to apply
to medical device firms or maybe food firms as they were regulated by the
government and she knew all their rules and how things had to be done. She
would also apply to drug companies as they had to go by the same rules that
she was familiar with. So she did a search of these type firms, copying the
links to the firms that she thought she could help. She was hard into the
search when she heard Kellie Jo call her in to eat.
She was hesitant to go anywhere near Kellie Jo however her stomach
was telling her to take a chance. So she got up from the desk leaving her
computer open, going on into the kitchen. Alicia focused her eyes or rather
her halfway clear eye upon the table and she saw that it was filled with
food. She didn't think she had been on the computer long enough for Kellie
Jo to cook up everything that they had in the kitchen but obviously she had
been.
"I cook when I'm upset." Kellie Jo said as if to explain all the
food.
"I see." Alicia said afraid to say anything more.
"Let me get some more ice for your eye before it swells shut."
Kellie Jo said as she jumped up going to the fridge to get more ice. This
she brought back taking the wet towel from Alicia replacing it with the dry
one that had fresh ice.
"Thanks," Alicia replied.
"It's the least I can do." Kellie Jo said with what Alicia thought
was a crooked smile but again it was gone before Alicia could swear it was
there.
"The very least," Alicia thought to herself but was afraid to say so
she just took the ice and she began to eat.
After dinner, Alicia returned to her laptop as Kellie Jo washed the
dishes and put all the food away. She kept saving the links to the medical
companies that she could find. She was finding companies that she had never
heard of and thus some that she had never applied to. She knew she was
limiting herself to a certain extent but if this failed she could go back
to applying wherever she could. She worked until Kellie Jo finished her
shower then she saved her work and shutdown her computer. She got her sleep
clothes before heading into the bathroom. When she got there she was
thankful that the mirror was fogged up as she didn't want to see what her
face looked like. She shed her clothes before stepping into the shower to
take her quick shower. The water felt good and she began to go over what
had happened to her and how Kellie Jo had changed right in front of her
eyes. She had always been a bit bossy but there was always kindness in her
actions and the way she conducted herself. Tonight Alicia saw a whole
different side to her and she knew that Kellie Jo could be pushed just so
far before she fought back. She also now knew that one didn't call her
"Poor White Trash" and stay standing. Kellie Jo had more pride than she
thought that she had. These were all hard lessons for Alicia to learn about
Kellie Jo.
When she opened the bathroom door, she found that Kellie Jo was
already in bed and more surprising was that she was sound sleep. Alicia
quietly put her dirty clothes away before going to her side of the bed and
slipping into the bed. She turned off the bedside lamp then she settled
down in the bed. She closed her eyes and waited for sleep to come but for
once it didn't come so easily. Her mind kept going back to what Kellie Jo
had said to her right after popping her in the face. Alicia remember very
clearly the fire that was in Kellie Jo's eyes as she hit her but as she
talked about the mother watching her child die and the friend losing their
best friend in the war there was a different look in those eyes. Again it
was only there briefly before the fire returned but all the same Alicia
could now see what she couldn't see before, there was this deep sadness
there, it was like she was talking from experience. At first Alicia
couldn't believe what she was thinking but her mind kept going back to that
look and her heart told her that what her eyes saw, she should
believe. Alicia turned over in the bed so that she was facing Kellie Jo's
back and she watched her sleep and she felt some compassion for this strong
young woman. She still hated her but she did feel her heart go out to her.
Kellie Jo had her back up at five in the morning. When Alicia went
into the bathroom to pee she got her first look at her eye. She about cried
when she looked at herself with her left eye still swollen and now there
was a dark area around it. Her right cheek had a small bruise that was also
turning dark. She looked like she had the shit beat out of her and that was
pretty much the case and yet she was still living in the same apartment
with the person that did it to her. Yet she knew that she had pushed Kellie
Jo's buttons and she didn't learn after the first time which resulted in
the second mark on her face. It made her angry at Kellie Jo for ruining her
looks and there was no amount of makeup that would cover the
bruises. Alicia still pulled out her makeup to try then she put it
down. She decided that maybe Kellie Jo should see what she had done and
maybe it would make her feel bad about it. Then she had a another thought
as she picked her makeup bag up and putting blush all around the bruises so
as to make them even more pronounced. Then she began to feel proud of her
bruises, she had earned them so she was going to show them off.
When she came out of the bathroom, she looked directly at Kellie Jo
and she got the reaction that she wanted but it was there for just a second
before Kellie Jo put a neural expression on her face. Alicia wanted more
from her but she was glad that at least she got something from her. She did
get what she wanted from Kellie Jo she just didn't know it. As soon as she
closed the bathroom door, Kellie Jo let her tears flow. She had never
intended on hitting Alicia but she had just gone too far and it was time
that someone put her in her place. Kellie Jo just didn't intend on doing it
the way that she had.
To Alicia, Kellie Jo was her same old bossy and bitchy person when
she came out of the bathroom barking orders as to what Alicia needed to do
once they got to the store. Then she was to take the van home and get back
to work on finding a job. Alicia offered to stay at the store but not
because she didn't want to look for a new job but she show off what Kellie
Jo had done to her. She wanted all the other girls to see just what their
boss was capable of. Kellie Jo got her way, of course, and before anyone
else had arrived, she was on her way back to the apartment.
Alicia sat down at the desk and opened up her laptop, she got the
internet running when she realized that she didn't have to go to the window
to get a signal like she had before. She hadn't noticed that last night but
then with her head still swirling from the licks that it had taken, it was
a wonder that she could think anywhere close to clearly. Now that she
could, she began to wonder if Kellie Jo hadn't called the cell phone
company and made them put up another tower near the apartment. She wouldn't
have been surprised to find out that she had. She knew that really wasn't
possible for any one person to do unless they were willing to pay for it
but then with Kellie Jo, she wasn't so sure anymore.
Before she could get too carried away by these thoughts, she began
to go to the websites of the companies that she had researched the day
before. She spent a few hours finding where to send resumes and getting
them to the departments within the company that they needed to go. After a
few hours, she got up to stretch her legs and get her something to eat. She
heated up some leftovers from all that Kellie Jo had fixed the night before
and she turned on the TV but there wasn't a thing on worth watching. She
got up to put her dishes away when she saw the bed and she remembered what
she had been thinking about what Kellie Jo had said about having a reason
not to want to get up in the morning.
She hurriedly took her dishes to the kitchen, and then she went back
to her computer. She had to find out if her thinking was right or
wrong. She first Google'd Kellie Jo's name and she didn't get anything that
related to the Kellie Jo she was searching for. Then she went to the local
paper's website but they didn't really have much of a history file plus she
didn't know just how far back she needed to be looking. She sat back
trying to figure out where to look, of course, she could be wrong and thus
her research would be in vain but somehow she didn't think so.
She went back to her applying to different medical companies and she
put her search on Kellie Jo on the back burner until her mind could come up
with a plan. She worked until it was about time to pick up Kellie Jo at the
store. She wasn't about to forget to do that again. When they got back to
the apartment, Alicia helped Kellie Jo heat up some supper then they took
their showers before retiring to the bed. Alicia again lay there and
thought about Kellie Jo and if she was right about her. She turned back
over looking at Kellie Jo's back and she again wondered just who she really
was.
By the next morning, all the swelling was gone from Alicia's eye but
she had a full blown shiner. It was all black and red looking, making
Alicia's face look terrible. Alicia tried again to get Kellie Jo let her
stay at the store after it opened but again Kellie Jo made her leave before
then. She got back to the apartment and worked on getting her resumes out
there again and she also spend more time trying to research Kellie Jo and
coming up with nothing again. She began to wonder if she was barking up the
wrong tree but she just didn't think so.
The next day Kellie Jo had off, so Alicia also got the day off from
the store. They did their laundry with Alicia separating herself from
everyone else at the laundry mat but she kept her eye on Kellie Jo. Again
she seemed as home with all the women that came in to do their laundry and
all the children loved this woman. They hung around her even after she had
given all the candy she had away. For just a brief moment, Alicia envied
Kellie Jo for her ability to be at ease with so many different types of
people. On her way back from the laundry, Kellie Jo stopped by a fast food
place to get them something to eat. She paid, of course, since Alicia had
no money as either the credit card companies or Kellie Jo was getting all
of her money. Kellie Jo dropped Alicia back at the apartment with all their
clothes and instructions for Alicia to put the clothes up before starting
back at the job hunt. Alicia cursed Kellie Jo as she carried the laundry up
to the apartment, she hated that Kellie Jo was ordering her around and she
hated herself for allowing her to do it. However once she had everything
put up, she went to her computer and started back to work.
Kellie Jo was gone for most of the day and that allowed Alicia to do
more investigation of her but she still didn't come up with anything. She
went to every local source that she could but none of them had a large data
base to go to. If they had lived in Atlanta then maybe she would have more
luck but that wasn't the case. She finally came to the conclusion that if
she was going to find anything she would have to do it by foot.
The next day after working at the store, leaving before everyone
could see her eye and how awful it was now looking, all purple and
black. She first did the few things that Kellie Jo had given her to do and
working on her computer, she grabbed a sandwich then set out in her
van. The first stop was the local library and while they did have some old
papers but they were on microfilm. Alicia didn't think anyone still used
these things but it was worth a try. She spent the rest of the day and it
was almost closing time when she came upon her first clue. There was an
article about the cancer center at the local hospital. It talked about all
the people who had gone through it and the success stories. That would be
where she would go the next day.
However it would be several more days before she could get
there. Kellie Jo had told her that there was a truck coming in the
following day so Alicia was stuck with getting it unloaded in the morning
and then restocking the shelves in the afternoon. Alicia hated having to
spend the whole day there when she was so close to finding out the truth
about Kellie Jo but it also enabled her to show off her black eye and
bruised cheek to the other girls there. However when the first girl asked
her how she got them, Alicia wimped out and told her that she had slipped
in the bathtub and landed face first on the floor. She wasn't sure that
everyone believed her and she again hated herself for not telling the truth
and she hated Kellie Jo for wanting to protect her. Then the next two days
a couple of the women that worked at the store came down with the stomach
virus that was going around so Alicia found herself stocking the shelves in
the morning then working the register for the rest of the day. By the time
that she got home on those days she was worn out however that didn't mean
that Kellie Jo didn't let her off the hook on working her computer to find
a job. All she wanted to do was take a shower and go to bed but no, Kellie
Jo had to practically stand over her shoulder as she worked. This
aggravated her to no end and she just wanted to tell Kellie Jo to go fuck
herself as she was tired and wanted to go to bed.
When she finally got an afternoon off, she put in a couple of hours
in on the computer then she set out for the hospital. While the hospital
was small, it was also built weird as the main part of the hospital was
build in the twenties and then they added to it over the years. And Alicia
quickly learned that it wasn't very easy to get from one wing to
another. She had to ask several times directions to the cancer wing and
every time she got more lost. She was about at the end of her ropes when
she given directions that left her back at the front entrance where she
started out from. She wanted to scream at someone to tell her how to get
there when she happened to look to her right and there was the entrance to
the cancer ward.
She was running out of time as Kellie Jo was leaving work early for
once. So she slipped into the ward looking around for someone who might
help her without kicking her out since she had no reason to be there. As
she wandered around, she saw several people who were admitted there and
they all looked like death warmed over. Then she saw a young girl with no
hair who was playing with a doll in her bed. When Alicia saw her, she
almost wanted to cry and then her eyes saw the girl's mother who had this
big smile on her face but the mother's eyes told her how worried and sad
that she was. She wanted to cry for the child and mother and for the first
time in her life she thought about someone else and not herself. She went
on to the back of the ward where she found a day room. There wasn't anyone
there so she walked on in. She looked around then her eyes went to the far
wall and there were thousands of pictures on the wall with some news
clippings. She went over to the wall and saw all the children and adults
there. Most were smiling brightly as they posed for the pictures. She
searched the pictures and some of the children made her cry as she just
knew that most of the kids on the wall had long since lost their battle.
Her eyes kept searching for Kellie Jo when they landed upon a
picture of a young mother and a little boy sitting on her lap. The boy was
smiling brightly and as Alicia studied the picture she saw a thinner and
sadder version of Kellie Jo. Alicia's fingers went to the picture and she
touched the little boy who had Kellie Jo's big brown eyes and she could
almost see a twinkle in his eyes that seemed to tell her that this was a
happy and sometime mischievous boy who loved his mother to death. She
looked around and found several more pictures of the boy by himself and
some more with Kellie Jo. Alicia felt her eyes tearing up as she knew that
Kellie Jo's little boy was one of the children that had lost his battle.
"He's a cute little boy isn't he?" Alicia heard a woman's voice said
and she jumped as she was lost in her thoughts.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you." The voice said and Alicia turned
around to see a heavy set gray haired African American nurse standing
behind her. Alicia noticed that the name tag said, Bella Simpson.
"That's okay; I was just looking at your pictures." Alicia said as
she wondered how she was going to explain her presents there.
"That's Billy Joe that you're looking at. That boy was so full of
life and when he was here, he kept me on my toes. He just loved to play and
be the center of attention. He had the natural ability to make you so mad
at him and in the next moment you wanted to grab him up and love him to
death. And his mother was the sweetest person on this earth. Even as she
hurt as she was with her Billy Joe's illness, she was always the one that
kept the other parents going. Do you know them?" Bella asked.
"No I just happened to have seen the picture and the little boy
caught my attention." Alicia lied as she didn't want it to get back to
Kellie Jo that she was checking up on her.
Bella gave Alicia that look that told Alicia that she wasn't buying
a word of it. Alicia stood there for a second then she found herself
confessing the truth to this kind looking woman. "That's a lie, I work for
her and when I lost my house, she took me in. She had never mentioned
anything about Billy Joe until a while back when she told me something that
made me wonder so I had to find out. You won't tell her that I was here
will you?" Alicia asked.
"Is that the only reason you want to know about Kellie Jo?" Bella
asked giving Alicia this motherly look that had lots of love in it but also
seemed to dare her to try and lie again.
"Did your children ever get away with anything?" Alicia asked and
Bella let out this hardy laugh that made Alicia smile.
"Not once they figured out that I was going to find out in the
end. And my grandchildren also have figured that out." She said still
laughing then she stopped laughing and asked her question again, "So why do
you really want to know about Kellie Jo?"
"Would I don't know work?" Alicia said and she eyed Bella and
discovered that Bella was going to require more than that feeble answer,
she just wasn't sure she could give her a better one. However she had to
try if she was going to get to know the story of Kellie Jo and her
child. "Okay let me try again. Even thought I work for her and live in the
same apartment, I don't know anything about her other than the fact that
for the most part she seems to know how to get under my skin and make me do
things that I don't want to do. I had lost my job and everything I own and
had given up on ever finding another engineering job but she was able to do
what I couldn't do on my own and that was to get me to start looking
again. Though I didn't like the method that she used, it did work. Plus
most of the time I hate everything about her but yet there is something
that keeps me there. It's like that she has this power over me and just
gets under my skin."
"I see that Billy Joe got his talents naturally but you haven't told
me anything that I didn't know long ago." Bella said with a smile. "Kellie
Jo is the most loving woman I have ever met but she doesn't put up with
bullshit very well. I have seen her humble doctors one moment and then love
on a child or give a parent the strength they need to go on the next
moment. She is one amazing woman and you would be wise to listen to her."
Bella said as she motioned to the couch by the wall.
Alicia thought that she was finally going to get the goods on Kellie
Jo but then Bella said," Let's sit and we can talk about this wonderful
woman but if you want to know more about whom she really is then you're
going to have to ask her."
"Thanks," Alicia said as she sat down then she waited as Bella got
them both a cup of coffee then she sat down beside of her. Bella was true
to her word as she didn't tell her any more about Kellie Jo's past but she
did fill her in on everything that Kellie Jo had done for the people that
had cancer or had a child that had cancer. Alicia also found out that
Kellie Jo still visited the hospital from time to time and when Bella saw a
mother that was having a hard time with their child being sick, she would
call Kellie Jo and the mother would then have a friend to cry with. Alicia
now at least knew where Kellie Jo would go on her days off when she wasn't
working and had left her alone in the apartment. There were also times that
Kellie Jo had left the store for a couple of hours and when she had
returned she seemed sad. She now knew that she had spent that time with
some mother that needed a shoulder to cry on or a mother who needed her
help in fighting the system.
When she left a couple of hours later, she had a new respect for
Kellie Jo but that didn't stop her from hating her at the same time. It
changed the way she looked at Kellie Jo but yet it didn't. And when she
went to pick Kellie Jo up that evening, she immediately started in on her
about looking for a job. And when she saw that Alicia had forgotten to
clean the bathroom, Alicia found herself cussing her again as she had to
clean it before they could take their showers. Kellie Jo may have been an
angel to others but she was the devil reincarnated to Alicia.
She was still pissed at Kellie Jo when they went to bed that night
however as she tried to go to sleep, Bella's words seemed to echo within
her head. She again turned over to face Kellie Jo and she tried to get
inside that stubborn head of hers.
Another month passed as Alicia continued her search for a job and
trying not to get depressed about how badly the search was going and all
the while Kellie Jo never seemed satisfied with anything that she did. If
she applied to ten companies that day, Kellie Jo would tell her that it
should have been fifteen. Or if she sent out twenty emails then it should
have been fifty. Alicia was having enough trouble just keeping going
without Kellie Jo constantly pushing her. She just wanted for once for
Kellie Jo to say that she had done alright. She hated this woman more each
day and yet she was trying so damn hard to please her and she failed each
and every day. Failure to find a job was weighing heavy on her and now
failure to please Kellie Jo was just adding to the weight she was feeling
on her shoulders. And like all things in life, there came a time when the
straw was added which broke the camel's back.
Kelly Jo had given her the day off from the store but as always,
there was a long list of things she was supposed to do along with keeping
up with her search for a job. For some reason, Alicia felt like something
good was going to happen that day so she was full of energy. She was
searching for more companies to apply to when she found an interesting one
up in North Dakota. She didn't particularly want to work that far up north
and it was a company that she had never heard of but seemed to be one of
the quiet leaders in bringing out new medical products. So she found where
she needed to apply to unfortunately they didn't have an online application
process so she got the address. She typed out her cover letter denoting all
the things that she had done then put her resume into the envelope. She had
to search around for a stamp before rushing to the mailbox outside of the
apartment building so it would go out that day.
She then came back in to do some cleaning on the apartment. Alicia
thought that the apartment was spotless but yet Kellie Jo still had found
things that she thought needed to be done. So Alicia got to work as she
didn't want to hear Kellie Jo complaining when she got home that
evening. It was the first Saturday of the month so she knew that the store
would be really busy and Kellie Jo would come in tired and in a bad mood.
When she got done, she went back over everything just to make sure that
Kellie Jo wouldn't find any faults with anything before she went back to
her computer to look for any other places to look for a job. She was slowly
running out of medical firms to apply to so she thought about what other
types of industry her skills would be a help in getting a foot inside of
the door. She worked for a few more hours before her back began to get
tired and she needed a break. So she turned off her laptop going over to
the couch to watch some TV. As the time came for Kellie Jo to come home,
Alicia decided to be nice so she got up leaving the TV on to heat up some
food for Kellie Jo. She wasn't much of a cook but she could use a microwave
with the best of them. She had just gotten the food on the table when she
heard Kellie Jo's key in the door. Alicia came from the kitchen and was
standing by the desk when Kellie Jo entered.
She had tired smile on her face until she saw the TV on and Alicia's
laptop closed. Alicia watched as that smile disappeared and there was a
frown that replaced it. Kellie Jo put her purse down on the laptop as she
walked by and Alicia thought that Kellie Jo was for once not going to open
