Lara's Story
Part Two
By Chris
Early the next morning, Gena awoke to the smell of fresh coffee and
the smell of waffles cooking. Gena made a stop in the bathroom to pee,
brush her teeth and then she found herself brushing out her hair. She was
about to put some lip gloss on before she caught herself. She put it back
on the sink counter and then turned to go to the kitchen.
"I thought I told you that you didn't have to cook breakfast." Gena
said as she entered the kitchen.
"You did, I just wasn't listening to you when you said it." Lara
said flashing Gena a smile as she turned to face her.
Gena tried not to smile back but she couldn't help herself. That
brought forth a bigger smile from Lara. "So you found the waffle iron."
Gena said as she took a sip of her coffee.
"Yea, I haven't had waffles in forever. Nana used to make them for
me every morning and then let me put all the maple syrup on them that I
wanted." Lara said as a sad smile came over her face.
"Well I don't think that I got any maple syrup." Gena told her and
she was actually sad that she didn't.
"No but you got maple flavoring and that is all I need to make maple
syrup." Lara said.
"I do and you can?" Gena stated.
"Yep, Nana taught me that too. All you got to do is heat some sugar
water and then add the flavoring. It'll be ready in a second." Lara said as
she stirred the sugar water and then added the maple flavoring.
Gena sat down at the table and watched Lara as she cooked and talked
about her Nana and how she had taught her to cook and also about life. As
they sat and ate, Gena listened quietly, just letting Lara talk about
something other than laundering drug money. It seemed to help her relax
being able to talk and Gena didn't mind listening to her talk. However time
ran out and Lara had to go take her shower as Gena got ready for another
day of work. Gena was just putting her police belt on when Lara appeared at
her door wearing just her panties and bra.
"You got another pair of sweats that I can wear. Those were
comfortable yesterday." Lara asked as she just stood there.
Gena had to stare at Lara for a second as Lara appeared so fucking
sexy to her even in those plain looking panties and bra. "Yea, I think I
got another pair or two," Gena said smiling at her.
She went over to her closet sliding back the door. She moved to the
back where she had several pairs of police training sweats that she had
collected over the years. "How would you like to have these?" Gena asked
showing them to Lara.
"For me?" Lara asked with a surprised look on her face.
"Sure, I can get plenty of them really cheap," Gena told her filling
Lara's arms with the sweats. She lied just a little there, she could get
plenty of them but they weren't really cheap but Lara didn't have to know
that.
"No one has ever given me anything before." Lara said as tears began
to fall down her cheeks. She then ran over to Gena giving her a hug as she
cried.
"Honey, they're just stupid sweats, they're nothing." Gena said but
from Lara's reaction, she knew that these sweats represented something much
more.
"I don't care; they're wonderful, thank you." Lara said as she
slowly pulled back with the tears still running down her cheeks.
Gena reached over and used her fingers to wipe the tears from Lara's
cheeks. "Here take these and go get dressed. We got to run." Gena told her
pushing the sweats into Lara's arms then turning her toward the door and
pushing her toward it.
"Thanks," Lara said stopping at the door, catching Gena wiping a
tear from her own eyes, something she didn't want Lara to see. She was
supposed to be a tough cop and not one who cries over stupid and emotional
things.
This was the third day that Lara got drilled and today they were
concentrating on what she knew of her father's drug operation. As it turned
out, she really didn't know much. She was allowed to handle the finances
but nothing else. However this is when Agent Stone showed that he did have
a useful talent and could be kind when it served his purposes. He would ask
a question and then gently probe Lara's mind as she came up with things
that she didn't realize that she knew. While she was limited to her room
and kitchen, it didn't mean that was the only places that she went. She did
sneak out at night and sneak around the house to see what was going on. And
it was those times that Agent Stone was able to get more from Lara and what
her father and brother were doing. They went at a slower pace as they took
their time. The director was there for most of the day but he was also
coming in and out of the room. He had this serious look to his face and at
times Kurt went with him. Then there was the time that Gena went out for
their lunch that she saw the Director, Kurt and the Sheriff talking. It
appeared to be a very serious conversation and Gena knew that something big
was going to go down because of all of what Lara knew, but then she knew
that already.
It was during the afternoon session that they had Lara describe the
people that she had seen at the house. That way they could maybe figure out
who was in the drug trade with her family. Most of the people that she had
seen were just some of the people from town wanting donations for their
causes. Since her father owned half the town, everyone went to him when
they needed something. Then Lara began so describe one of late night
ventures into one of the parts of the house that she wasn't allowed that
she dropped the biggest bomb of the day. She had no clue that she had done
so until all three of the DEA people and Kurt's eyes went wide and their
jaws dropped. Gena had to include herself in this as she was just as
surprised as they were.
She was up near her father's office when three older gentlemen came
out of her father's office, all three laughing and more importantly they
were stuffing thick envelopes of money into their jacket pockets. As she
described the men, everyone's attention was drawn to Lara and she began to
get concerned and had this worried look on her face.
"Who were these men?" Lara asked Gena.
Gena first looked at Kurt who gave his approval with a nod of his
head. "Lara you are describing the police chief and two of his deputies
from Concord County. And by saying what I think you are saying then the
three main men who are supposed to be busting your father are actually
protecting him and are on the take. You just fingered three bad cops." Gena
told her.
"Oh fuck!" Lara said as her hand went to her mouth. "I know I am
going to be killed now."
"No, it means that you are going to help us get three bad cops
busted and put into prison." The director said.
"Can you prove that they got money from him?" Agent Simpson asked.
"Sure it's in the computer, you got that info," Lara told them.
"Show us," Agent Stone told her.
Lara got her computer and her fingers went to work, it only took her
a few minutes to find what she was looking for, "See here it is," Lara said
as she showed Agent Simpson what she had looked up.
"How do we know that Curly, Moe and Shemp are them?" Agent Stone
asked and then it hit Gena and she laughed.
"What's so funny officer?" The director asked showing that he was a
bit pissed at her.
Gena had to make herself stop laughing before she said, "Curly, Moe,
and Shemp..." Then the paused as everyone looked at her. Finally she said,
"The Three Stooges, it has to be the three cops."
"Oh..." The director said and then he smiled as did the others.
"Did your father tell you to enter them that way?" Gena asked taking
over the questions for the first time as she hated dirty cops.
"Not directly but Buck told me the morning after I saw them to make
that entry and for how much. And then the last day of every month I had to
make the same entry." Lara told her.
Then everyone looked either at their watch or phone and they each
discovered the same thing, that day was the last day of the month. "Get our
agents to keep an eye out for our Three Stooges tonight." The Director said
to Agent Simpson who then rushed out of the room.
"You got people watching the house?" Lara asked with a worried look
on her face.
"Yes we do, we put them there yesterday," The director told her.
"They'll be seen..." Lara said and she looked like she was about to
piss in her pants from being so scared.
"Not these agents, they're trained to observe while not being
seen. I promise you that none of your family has a clue that they are
there. I put the best we have there. I don't want to screw this up any
more than you don't want us to screw this up." He assured her.
"Okay," Lara said feeling a bit relieved but not a lot. So Gena gave
her a reassuring smile and then the questioning went on as they had Lara
point out every payment made to them. A few minutes later Agent Simpson
came back in and he whispered something into the Director's ear who nodded
his approval. Gena figured that the three cops were now having every dime
they ever spent being checked versus what they were paid. The three cops
were in deep shit, they just didn't know it yet.
They seemed to concentrate on the cops for most of the day before
they went to the people that she met when she went down to Florida to make
a pickup of drugs. She gave them the names that she knew them by and their
descriptions. She also went into detail as to where she met them. Gena was
impressed by Lara's ability to remember even the small details about the
places. The DEA Agents and Director did stop the questioning a little
earlier that evening allowing them to be home by nine.
"I'm going to jump into the shower and then you can if you want or
if you want to go on to bed, that is fine. I know you must be tired after
answering questions all day long." Gena told her as they entered her house.
"Yea, I don't know why I am so tired; I have just sat all day." Lara
said but Gena could hear the tiredness in her voice.
"Lara, you're doing more than sitting. You're having to think and
remember things you probably would rather forget. That is very hard and
will wear you out. So you deserve to be tired." Gena told her with a kind
voice putting her hand on Lara's forearm and giving it a squeeze.
"Thanks," Lara said with a soft smile showing that she was grateful
to Gena for feeling for her.
"Why don't you grab a Mountain Dew from the fridge, maybe that will
perk you up and I will be back in a jiffy." Gena told her.
Lara gave her a smile and headed for the kitchen and Gena turned to
head for the shower she was so looking forward to. She wanted to take her
time in the shower but she figured that Lara would want to take a shower so
she shortened the shower much to her own displeasure. She put on a clean
pair of panties a gown before heading to the living room.
She was about to tell Lara that the shower was free when she saw
Lara lying on the couch. Her Mountain Dew was sitting on the table with
maybe one sip taken out of it. "Poor thing," Gena said softly as she turned
around to go get a gown for Lara.
Gena got the gown that Lara had worn the previous night bringing it
to the living room with a pillow and blanket from the bed Lara was
using. She hadn't planned on having to undress Lara again but since she had
already done it once, she couldn't see out of a way from doing it
again. She just hated thinking about Lara having to sleep in clothes that
she had been in all day. She went to the couch, picking up Lara's feet and
sitting down, placing Lara's feet in her lap. She slipped the old tennis
shoes from Lara's feet, leaving the socks. She then turned slightly so that
she could reach up to Lara's waist. "Lift up honey," Gena told her.
It took a moment for Gena's request to reach the sleepy girl's brain
but she finally raised her hips so that Gena could get her sweat pants
pulled down and then off. Gena started to reach up to Lara's wrists when
her eyes happen upon Lara's panties. They appeared to be an older pair
that fit tightly around her body. The crotch of the panties was pressed
against Lara's pussy and Gena could see the lips pressed against the thin
cotton material. "Damn you girl!" Gena said quietly to herself and she felt
irritated at both herself for the stirrings that she was feeling and also
at Lara for making her feel that way.
She then pulled up on Lara's arms getting her to sit up. This caused
Lara to open her eyes slightly and she gave Gena a sweet smile. Gena could
not help herself but to smile back and then Lara's eyes closed as she fell
back asleep. Gena kept smiling though she wanted to stop as she pulled
Lara's sweat top off. She got the gown pulling it over Lara's head and got
her arms into the arm holes a little easier this time. She pulled the gown
down to Lara's waist before unhooking Lara's bra so that she could get it
off of her. It was then that she realized that she forgot to get the straps
off of Lara's shoulders before she put the gown on her. So she reached up
the sleeve grasping the strap. She was glad that she had picked out a
sleeveless gown. She pulled the strap down and around Lara's elbow hoping
that she wasn't hurting Lara but she just murmured something unintelligible
before settling down again. Land then reached to the other side taking the
strap and slowly pulling the bra through the arm hole. She dropped the bra
onto her coffee table before starting to ease Lara back down on the couch.
Lara in her sleepy state had other thoughts as she put her arms
around Gena and pulling herself in tight into Gena's body. Gena was unsure
as to what to do when Lara placed her head on Gena's shoulder and nuzzling
her face into Gena's neck. Gena wanted to push Lara away but the hug felt
so good and it seemed to Gena that Lara needed to be hugged. Gena's mind
went back to what Lara had told her of her childhood and how she had grown
up without anyone to hold her. So Gena did what she knew she shouldn't do,
she put her arms to Lara's back and tenderly caressed her as she slept.
Lara let out a contented sigh as Gena held her. And as Gena held
this young woman, she felt the tears begin to fall from her eyes. She could
feel her heart go out for Lara and as much as she wanted to keep from
feeling anything for Lara, she knew she was growing close to her. Gena
began to gently rock Lara as she held her. Time seemed to disappear for
Gena as she held Lara wanting her to feel safe and protected for the first
time in her life. Gena wasn't sure how much time had passed before she
noticed that Lara's hands were no longer holding her as tightly. Gena eased
Lara back down on the couch placing her head softly on the pillow that she
had brought. Lara let out another sigh as she turned onto her side away
from Gena.
Gena placed her hand on Lara's shoulder giving it a squeeze before
getting up. She placed the sheet and blanket that she had gotten on top of
Lara, tucking her in. She stood there looking at Lara sleeping for a
moment before heading back to her bedroom for some sleep that she needed
badly.
This time when Gena woke up, she wasn't surprised to be smelling
bacon and eggs being fried and the faint smell of freshly brewed
coffee. She knew that fussing at Lara for cooking wouldn't do much good so
she just got up heading to the bathroom and then into the kitchen.
"Morning, it smells good." Gena said seeing Lara in her gown working
away at the stove.
"Thank you, it'll be ready in just a minute." Lara said flashing
Gena a big smile before going back to her bacon.
"Do you always get up early?" Gena asked as she took a sip of her
coffee.
"Well actually I normally stay awake most of the night when I know
everyone is asleep and then sleep during the day unless I know my father
would need to see me. But when I have to make the drug runs, I go back to
sleeping at night and driving during the day. So I get used to getting up
early to get on the road." Lara told her.
"Well I was wondering how you were always beating me up every
morning," Gena told her.
"Plus I wanted to beat you up so I made myself think that when I go
to sleep and I seemed to be able to beat you up." Lara said flashing Gena
another big smile like she was getting one over on Gena and she was.
"I bet with your mind, you could do anything you want," Gena told
her. "And I want you to promise that you will go to school when you get to
wherever you are sent to, you need to get a formal education."
Gena saw Lara's shoulders slump when she mention about Lara being
sent off. "I will if..."
"There is no if's... you'll be hidden well and your father will
never find you." Gena told her.
"Okay..." Lara said somewhat sadly, then she brightened up as she
said, "Breakfast's ready."
When they arrived at the station and had entered the interrogation
room, the DEA agents with their director were already there along with
Kurt. There was also another man with them. He was very muscular and had
this serious, determined look on his face. Gena knew immediately that this
man was part of a DEA SWAT team and the schematic on the table confirmed
this.
"Young lady, we have a drawing of your home here and we want to go
over with it with you this morning." The new man asked of Lara as he leaned
over the drawing on the table.
"My name is Lara, what's your name?" Lara asked and Gena had to
smile at her. "And it is my father's house, not mine. I don't have a
home."
The man straightened up looking at Lara with a studious glare. There
was a long pause before the man's face broke into a big smile. "Lara my
name is Samuel but most people call me Sam or that Fucking Prick, you may
call me either one."
Lara smiled, "Sam will do fine, so what do you want to know about my
father's house?"
"Everything, where the furniture is located, where your brothers and
father are during the mornings and where their bodyguards are." Sam told
her.
"Are you going in and arresting them?" Lara asked.
"Yes we are but don't ask me when, I won't tell you." Sam said
kindly.
"Okay, just don't let them get away." Lara asked her.
"Oh I won't I promise you. That is why my men call me the Prick
because I am a Prick when we've got a got a job to do." Sam told her and
that made Lara smile just a little and Gena felt a little better about
things.
"Okay then I guess I had better tell you everything about my
father's house," Lara told him.
"That would help us do our job," Sam said with a smile but then his
face turned serious as "The Prick" began to come out of him. Although he
was nice to Lara, he did drill her on everything that she knew about the
house. Lara started out with the main pieces of furniture before going to
the smaller pieces where she had a bit more trouble. Gena didn't know why
this was becoming so hard until she began to picture her own house and she
discovered that while she knew where everything was, putting it in a
precise point was a bit more difficult. She began to appreciate the
difficult task that Lara had, and Lara's father's house was very large with
many rooms. Some of those rooms, Lara had snuck into but rooms like her
father's office she had been into only once or twice. And it was those
rooms that Sam wanted the most detail of. Sam had her go over the house
several times making corrections as Lara remembered more on each trip
through the house. Gena could see that this day was just as hard on Lara as
the previous days were, if not more so. When they were going over the
books, Lara was at home, she knew the accounts frontwards and
backwards. But in the house that she lived, she barely knew as she spent
most of her life in the kitchen and her little bedroom, if you could call
it that. Once Sam was satisfied with the layout of the house, he went into
the movements of Lara's family and also the help that came in and cleaned
and cooked.
Gena could see what Sam was after and she hoped that Lara could
provide him with the answers that Sam was looking for which was a way into
the house without alerting the people inside. The house had a very
sophisticated security system that Lara knew little about. However she
seemed to know just enough for Sam to get an idea as to what type of system
it was and thus he could find a way around it as that was his job.
When Gena went out of the room to get a few things done and to order
their lunch, she saw more and more of Sam's people arriving. She was
surprised to also see a couple of women among the group. But after studying
these women, she came to the conclusion that they were just as big a prick
as Sam could be. She was glad that these women were on her side and she
wouldn't have to be arresting them some day. She considered herself to be
tough but these ladies looked tougher than she was.
"I guess I got what I need gentleman," Sam said to the DEA agents,
and then he turned to Lara, "Thank you for your help Lara, you were great
and I appreciate you being patient with me."
"You're welcome," Lara said and then she smiled, "and you're not as
big a prick as you make yourself out to be."
"Well don't tell any of my people that, let's let that be our little
secret." Sam said making Lara smile.
Sam started to turn when Lara spoke, "Remember you promised?"
"I remember... and I never break a promise." Sam said with a smile
but then his face turned serious as he became the real prick he was as he
walked out of the room.
"So what else you want to know?" Lara asked looking at the two DEA
agents and the Director who were getting out of their seats.
"We're done for the moment but we'll need you again soon." The
director said then he went out of the room with Agent Stone and Simpson
following close behind.
"So you need to know anything more?" Lara asked Kurt as he started
for the door.
"No, not at the moment honey, you just sit tight for a minute." Then
he directed his attention to Gena, "Come with me."
"Yes sir." Gena said then she said to Lara, "Just sit tight and
relax, I'll or someone will be back for you in a moment."
"You come back... okay?" Lara said as she looked at Gena with those
sad eyes.
"I'll try..." Was all that Gena could say. She knew that something
was about to go down and she didn't know what part she would be playing.
Gena saw that the station now had several young fit DEA agents
roaming around and she saw that they had taken over the conference
room. Gena saw Kurt and the Sheriff entering the sheriff's office so that
is where she went.
When she entered the room, she saw that there was a middle aged
woman dressed in a business suit also in the room. She stopped just inside
of the door not knowing if she should have gone in but then Kurt motioned
for her to come on into the room, which she did, closing the door behind of
her.
"Gena, this is Shannon Wilfred, she is from the State Bureau of
Investigation. She has been listening in to the interviews of Lara." Kurt
said to her.
"Yes sir," Gena said as she got up to shake Shannon's hand.
"The DEA has jurisdiction over Lara's father and brothers however I
have convinced them that Concord's sheriff and his two deputies are mine. I
don't like bad cops and I plan on making examples of them. What I want to
know from you is if you trust Lara and what she is telling us?" She asked.
"Yes I do, she has more to fear from her father than anything that
you or the DEA can do to her." Gena told her.
"That is the feeling that I'm getting from her too. Do you think
that the payments that she saw given were to our three cops?" Shannon asked
her.
"I've only met the sheriff from Concord a couple of times but her
description of the men she saw fits him and his two deputies to a T." Gena
told her wondering why Shannon was asking her this and she wondered if they
had found anything on the cops that they could use from their personal bank
accounts. So Gena had to ask, "Did you find anything on them that matched
what Lara is saying?"
"Oh we found some interesting things that I am interested in hearing
their explanation." Shannon said without a smile.
"I wouldn't mind being in on that bust." Gena said wanting to bust
them just as much as Shannon obviously did.
"We need you for another job Gena," The sheriff told her and she
knew what it was going to be. "Lara has seemed to develop a trust in you
and we are going to have to use that trust when everyone goes to
trial. She's going to have to testify against her family and she needs
someone on her side. You seemed to be the one she trusts."
"What about my job, I need to get back to it." Gena protested even
though she knew that it wasn't going to do her any good to do so.
"You're job is to protect Lara for the time being, this is too
important for everyone. She needs to be protected and more importantly
needs to feel safe. That is your job for the time being. Do we understand
each other?" The sheriff asked.
"Yes sir, we do." Gena said knowing that her fate was sealed. "When
is this all going down?"
"Tomorrow morning, since Lara is due to return then, we can't wait
any longer or they'll know something is up. And we don't think that Lara is
capable of going back into that house." Shannon stated.
"No... she would run and run as far and as fast as she could. She
knows her father will find her but she would make it a little harder for
him to do so." Gena admitted.
"That's about the way we have all figured it and to tell you the
truth, I would run too." Kurt said.
"So what do I do with her tomorrow?" Gena asked.
"Keep her at your home, we'll have some of our people watching your
house not that I think there will be any problem. The DEA has an army here
waiting to move in, I don't think there is any chance of them getting away
or calling for help." Shannon said.
"How they going to do that?" Gena wanted to know as it was her ass
on the line if something happened to Lara.
"They're going to cut the phone lines and jam their cell phones."
Shannon told her.
"Think we can get one of those jamming devices?" Gena asked half
serious and half kidding.
"I wouldn't mind having one of those myself." Shannon said finally
breaking into a smile.
"Go on and get her out of here." The sheriff told her.
"Okay," Gena said getting up and going to the door before
stopping. "Anyway I can listen into what is going on?"
The sheriff and Kurt looked at Shannon who stood there for a moment
before speaking, "If I was a nosy bitch, I'd be listening to channel
thirteen and eighteen about six in the morning."
"I think that description fits me perfectly." Gena said with a smile
then she opened the door and went out.
"So where we going?" Lara asked as they got into Gena's personal
car.
"To my house, but first we got to stop at the grocery store but
don't tell anyone. I'm supposed to take you straight home." Gena told her.
"Cool, I've never been grocery shopping." Lara said excitedly.
"I wish I could get that excited about grocery shopping," Gena said
in a deadpan voice.
"I'm sorry; it's just that I never got to do anything..." Lara said
with a frown.
Gena was just starting to back out when she stopped as she looked at
Lara and she realized that she had hurt Lara's feelings. "No I'm sorry. I
wasn't thinking there, it's just that grocery shopping has always been a
chore for me and I forgot about how you would feel about doing the simple
things in life that I have always taken for granted." Gena told her as she
placed her hand on Lara's arm to show that she was being serious and she
was sorry for the way she had said what she said.
"It's okay," Lara said as she gave her a soft smile thus accepting
Gena's apology.
"You know, I might just enjoy this shopping trip," Gena said with a
smile.
"You don't have to say that," Lara told her.
"Oh no, I'm serious. Just seeing your face light up at all the
choices will be fun to see." Gena said giving Lara's arm another squeeze
before starting to back out again.
Once she got out on the road, Gena could see that Lara was still
frowning so she figured that she still had some making up to do and she
knew just how to do that and that was to be honest with her. "You know why
I hate to grocery shop?"
"No..." Lara said not looking over at Gena.
"Because I get inside the store and either nothing looks good and I
can't figure out what to buy or I go there hungry and everything looks good
and I still don't know what to buy." Gena told her with a little laugh.
"So you end up hating to go..." Lara said and this time Gena saw
that she did look over at her.
"Yep, I never know what to do so I buy the same things I always buy,
so today I will let you help me chose what to buy," Gena told her.
"What if I pick out something you don't like?" Lara asked a bit
worried but Gena could see that she had Lara's interest back.
"As long as you don't pick out peas and lima beans then you're
pretty safe." Gena told her.
"I like peas but lima beans are yucky." Lara said with a giggle.
"Well if you want to get some peas, I don't have to eat them," Gena
told her.
"No, I like them but I don't love them so I can live just fine
without them," Lara told her.
"So what do you like to eat?" Gena asked of her to get the
conversation going and get Lara to talk about something other than what she
had been talking about for the past four days.
Lara didn't have to hesitate to think about what she liked, she
began immediately naming off they type of foods that she liked. She also
emphasized that she could make all these things. Nana had taught her a lot
about cooking and Lara said she enjoyed spending time in the kitchen
cooking. It was something that she could do and do well. It was also
something that she knew how to do that was legal and that she laughed at
making Gena laugh with her.
When they got to the store, she turned off the car and then turned
to Lara. "Stay in the car a minute, I'll be right back."
"What's going on?" Lara asked with a worried look on her face.
"Nothing to worry about I just want to talk to our escorts," Gena
said.
"What escorts?" Lara asked turning around to look out the back
window.
"Just relax, I'll tell you when I get back." Gena assured her, and
then she got out before Lara could ask any more questions.
Gena saw that Lara was watching her every move as she went back to
talk to the man and woman sitting in the car that parked right behind of
them. She only talked for a moment before she came back up to her car and
walking in front of it. "Well you coming?" Gena asked raising her arms and
smiling at Lara.
Lara hurried out and Gena used her remote to lock the doors. "So
why do we have escorts, we never had any before?"
"We didn't?" Gena asked her as she raised her eyebrows.
"Did we?" Lara asked as she was obviously confused.
"We haven't had anyone follow us home that I know of however I
suspect that there has been a couple of DEA agents watching the house at
night. They aren't taking any chances with you." Gena told her.
"They're taking my father down tomorrow aren't they?" Lara asked as
they entered the store.
"Let's talk about it when we get home, I don't want anyone to
overhear us talking. Let's just talk about food or gossip as we shop."
Gena told her giving her a big smile.
"But I don't know any gossip," Lara complained.
"Make it up, that is what gossip is after all," Gena told her giving
her a wink.
"How do you make up gossip?" Lara asked still unsure.
"Mmmm... okay let's start with Agent Stone; he has a wedding ring
on, let start with him." Gena said as she got a shopping cart. "You know I
heard that he was having an affair..."
"He is?" Lara asked. "How do you know that?"
"I don't know, I am making it up." Gena said smiling and she saw
that Lara was getting frustrated so she helped her out. "Now you say, yes
he is I saw him the other night at the dinner with a woman that wasn't his
wife."
"Oh okay," Lara said still a bit unsure about this game.
"Oh you did, what did she look like?" Gena asked.
Lara hesitated for a second and then she said in an unsure voice,
"She was this young blond with big breasts..."
"Oh I love it, just what were they doing?" Gena asked with a big
grin.
"He had his hands all over her and was kissing her right there in
the middle of the dinner, it was disgusting." Lara told her now that she
had figured out the game.
"That cad! I can't believe he would do such a thing with his wife
eight months pregnant with their third child." Gena said in mock shock that
made Lara giggle.
"Oh I know, it was sickening, I wanted to go over there and tell him
to go home to his wife!" Lara said trying to be serious but now she was
giggling too much.
They then began to shop as they made up their gossip and after they
got through tearing poor Agent Stone apart, Agent Simpson was next only he
was a cross dresser who loved to wear his wives panties around the
house. Then the Director of the DEA was having an affair with the First
Lady. By the time they got through, their basket was full and Gena noticed
that Lara had picked out a lot of things to make Latin dishes so she knew
what she would be eating for a while.
When they got back in the car, Gena said, "And that is how you make
grocery shopping fun. It's a lot nicer going with someone to talk to."
"I haven't laughed so much in my life, I love going shopping with
you," Lara told her as she was grinning from ear to ear.
"Well I enjoyed it too; I haven't laughed that much in a long time
too. I'm going to have to take you every time I have to go shopping." Gena
said without thinking.
"I'll go too," Lara said excitedly.
"Well maybe you will be here long enough for us to go again." Gena
told her hating to put a damper on things but she had to inject some
reality into the situation. Lara would be moved soon and she wouldn't know
where or what her new name would be.
"Yea," Lara said with her voice showing her sadness. "Well what do
you want me to cook for supper?"
"You know you don't have to cook every meal," Gena told her.
"I know but I like to cook," Lara told her.
"Well I'll make you a deal; you pick what to cook only I have to
help you." Gena told her.
"That'll be fun," Lara said then she described a number of dishes,
checking them out with Gena before deciding on one to cook.
"How about we take a shower and then put on our nightgowns before
starting to cook, I want to get out of this uniform." Gena suggested as
they entered the house.
"Will those guys that were following us be coming in?" Lara asked
with a bit of worry showing on her face.
"No their job is to cover the outside the house. I would say that
they'll be driving around the neighborhood all night checking for cars that
look out of place. We won't be seeing them if they're doing their job
right." Gena told her.
"Okay, you go first and I'll get things started then show you what
to do as I shower." Lara told her.
"Oh okay..." Gena said as that wasn't exactly what she meant for
them to do when she said she would help with the cooking but Lara had
already started to put the groceries away and Gena saw that she had been
dismissed. Gena had to smile at the turn of events as she went back toward
her bedroom.
Gena found a clean gown for herself and one for Lara to put on after
her shower. She then stripped out of her clothes before going to the
bathroom to shower. She wondered what the next day would bring and she
hoped that everything went well and no one slipped through the net that the
DEA was laying down. She really didn't want for Lara to have to fear for
her life but even if they arrested everyone, there would always be that
fear for Lara. She felt for the poor girl always feeling fear from the day
she was born to the day she died. That was no way to live but there wasn't
anything she could do about that. All she could do was to protect her for
as long as she was here. After that, she would just have to worry never
knowing if Lara was safe. But making Lara laugh so much as they shopped did
make her feel good, at least she got Lara to laugh at something for a
change.
"It's all yours" Gena told Lara as she entered the kitchen smelling
the aroma of the food and she felt her stomach growl.
"Let me finish this then I'll go take a quick shower," Lara told her
as she was spooning some sauce into a glass baking dish.
"No, you will tell me what to do and I'll finish up as you take a
long shower," Gena told her.
"You sure?" Lara asked.
"I'm very sure, I may not cook much but I can cook, so tell me what
to do and I'll finish it for you," Gena told her.
"Okay," Lara said with a smile. She told Gena what she needed for
her to do and Gena could see that she wanted to stay and finish it herself,
so Gena had to turn Lara around by her shoulders and push her toward the
door with Lara protesting but going all the same.
While Gena hadn't ever fixed this particular dish, she knew enough
and with Lara's instructions, she knew she wouldn't fuck it up. Once she
had that finished and placed into the oven, she made them a salad to go
along with their main dish.
About the time that Lara came back into the kitchen with her fresh
clean gown and her black hair freshly washed and hanging down her back,
Gena was taking the baking dish out of the oven as it just had to brown and
melt the cheese as the chicken that was in the dish, Lara had already
cooked.
"You look human again," Gena told her as she put the dish on top of
the stove.
"Thank you, I feel human again too," Lara said smiling.
"So how did I do?" Gena asked as Lara came over to look at their
masterpiece.
"You did it perfectly, it looks great," Lara told her.
"It smells great too and I am starving," Gena told her.
"Me too, I love this dish, it is one of my favorites that Nana
taught me." Lara told her.
"What is it called?" Gena asked her.
Lara paused for a moment before she frowned, "I don't know, she
never told me that, I don't think. I just know how to make it."
"Well then we'll call it Lara's Latin Chicken Cheese Casserole."
Gena told her and that made Lara smile.
"Okay but the next one I make, we have to name after you as I know
how to cook them but not what their names are." Lara said with a laugh.
"Deal," Gena told her, "Now let's eat!"
"Let's," Lara echoed as she went to get two plates to dish some of
it out for both of them.
"So do you want to go into the living room to eat, which is usually
where I end up watching TV." Gena asked as she came up to Lara to hold the
plates.
"Ah... can we eat here at the table." Lara suggested.
"Sure, anywhere you want." Gena told her.
"It's just that I never got to sit in the dining at the table and
eat with other people, it was always in the kitchen or in my room." Lara
said.
"Oh..." Gena said feeling bad for Lara once again which was becoming
a habit. "We can eat all our meals here then but you know I don't really
have a dining room, the table is here in the kitchen as this is a small
house."
"You're wrong about that you know." Lara said with a smile as she
took her plate going to the table and sitting down.
"Okay, I'll bite, how am I wrong?" Gena asked as she sat down to
Lara's right side at the round kitchen table.
Lara smiled broadly as she took a sip of Mountain Dew then once she
had sat it down on the table, she said very seriously, "When we cook it is
the kitchen and when we eat it is the dining room."
Gena sat there for a moment studying Lara and she had to admit that
she had a great imagination but then again that is all she had growing up
as company, "I do believe that you're right. And I think we have a very
nice dining room upon which to eat."
Lara just grinned at her, "Yes we do." Then Lara's face turned
serious "So is it going down tomorrow?"
"Let's have a fun meal and then I promise I will tell you everything
that I know." Gena told her and then she said with another smile, "So ask
me another question and I promise to answer it."
"Mmmm..." Lara said as she ate and bite of her salad then she asked,
"So when did you get this house, it's nice, I like it."
Gena saw an opening to talk about something nice and get them
through supper, "I actually got lucky on that one. This house was owned by
a young couple who unfortunately decided to make some quick money by making
meth. They of course got hooked on their own product and they got
busted. The house had to be cleaned out to get all the chemicals out of
it. Then the bank was left with an old house that they couldn't sell. You
see this neighborhood had sort of got taken over by the criminal
element. There were mostly older families living here and they were too
scared to say anything. We tried to clean it up but it was hard as we have
such a small force and this is a big county." Gena said.
"So you came in here on your white horse and cleaned the place up."
Lara said with a bright smile on her face.
Gena laughed a little and said, "Well no not exactly like that. I
wanted my own home and I saw this house one day on one of my patrols. I
went to the bank asking what they wanted for it. The manager spat out a
high price and I just had to laugh and then I thanked him and started to
get up. I figured that I was the only one asking about the price and I was
calling his bluff."
"And he was bluffing wasn't he..." Lara suggested.
"Oh yes, he was trying to make a big profit for the bank. When he
saw his only prospect starting to walk out, he immediately began to lower
the price. Once he got it down to where I could start to afford it, we
began to bargain. After about four hours, I had him down at his rock bottom
price. I think it was what the bank could afford to lose on the house. Then
I let him talk him into giving me a personal loan so I could fix up the
house which once we signed the paperwork, he folded that loan into the
house loan." Gena told her.
"So how did you clean up the neighborhood?" Lara asked now all
interested in her story.
"Just be patient my impatient friend." Gena said with a smile making
Lara giggle. "I knew a guy that did clean ups for meth houses so I had him
come back in and re- clean the house. I then had a bare house so I began to
look at bargain places to find enough furniture to fill the house however I
did get a very expensive heat pump with a filtering system to keep the air
clean. And I slowly began to fix the place up." Gena told her.
"Well you have done a great job." Lara told her.
"There's still lots to be done but it is coming along." Gena
replied.
"It is but how..." Lara started to say before Gena put her finger to
Lara's lips making Lara giggle.
"That was the easiest thing of all." Gena told her with a teasing
smile.
"Which was?" Lara asked impatiently.
"I talked the sheriff into letting me bring a patrol car home with
me if I paid for the gas. Then I made sure to park it out front so that
everyone could see it. I then began to take a walk in my uniform when I got
home. I visited all the other houses getting to know them, skipping the few
houses where I knew drugs were being sold. Needless to say their business
dropped off to the point that they had to move on. I mean no one is going
to go buy drugs when there is a cop car down the street." Gena said
smiling.
"So your white horse was a cop car." Lara said.
"Yep and once the bad element had moved out, more families began to
come back. It was safe to live here again." Gena told her.
"That is great; you were the hero on the white horse. You just
didn't have to have a show down in the middle of the street." Lara said
smiling.
"That is a good thing, if I had to win a quick draw contest, I'd
probably shoot myself in the foot." Gena said with a laugh making Lara
laugh.
"I would for sure. I don't like guns, I have seen too many around
the house and I don't like that. I just hope that everything goes smoothly
tomorrow." Lara said.
Gena knew she had put off telling Lara what she knew and they were
about done eating anyway so she said, "I do too, that is why they are going
in early and going after those cops at the same time."
"What if my father calls out for help?" Lara asked, "I know he and
my brothers won't give up easily." Lara told her.
"He won't be able too, the phone lines are being cut and the cell
phones jammed." Gena told her.
"Can they do that?" Lara asked.
"Yes they can and they are going to, they've gotten everything
approved by a federal judge." Gena said but she could see the worry on
Lara's face. "And you know that they got that prick leading them and I bet
he really is a prick when a job has to be done."
"Yea, I know that Sam can be a prick, you can see it in his eyes but
he has a soft heart, you can see that too. He is a lot like you." Lara
said.
"What, you mean I'm a prick?" Gena said as she raised her eyebrows.
"Oh no I didn't mean that...," Lara was saying when Gena let out a
laugh.
"I know what you mean; I was just playing with you." Gena said
putting her hand on Lara's forearm and giving it a squeeze.
"You do have a big heart; you have helped me when you could have
just thrown me in the cell and forgotten about me." Lara said as she gave
Gena a shy yet sad smile.
"You're the exception to the rule, most everyone else I have and
will just throw into the cell." Gena said wanting to make sure that Lara
understood that she would always be a cop first.
"I know that too, but you helped me and that is all I care about."
Lara told her.
"If you're done with your dinner, why don't we go to the living room
and watch a movie or something. We both need a couple of hours of
relaxation." Gena said as she got up taking hers and Lara's plate to the
sink to rinse them off.
"What types of movies do you like to watch?" Gena asked and as soon
as she said it she knew what the answer would be.
"I never have watched any movies; I didn't have a TV in my room."
Lara told her confirming what Gena sort of figured.
"What about when you were making a run to Florida, did you watch one
on the TV in your room?" Gena asked.
"No I liked to get out and roam around. I never got to see anything
at home so I went out and see what I could see," Lara told her.
"Well I can understand you doing that. I can't say I wouldn't do the
same," Gena told her.
"But I would like to see one and then maybe one day go to a theater
and see one." Lara told her as they rinsed off the dishes and put them into
the dish washer.
"So what type of movie would you like to see, a drama, comedy,
romance or what?" Gena asked her.
"Something to make me laugh," Lara said quickly.
"I think I can find something to make you do that." Gena said giving
her a smile as she began to think over what movie she wanted to pick out as
she had several that were very funny.
Gena came up with several choices that she told Lara about them as
they made their way to the living room. She gave Lara several of the DVD's
for her to look them over and she picked out an animated movie that Gena
thought that she would enjoy. She put it into the player then went over to
sit down on one end of the couch which was one of the few things that she
had gotten new. She wanted something nice to sit upon as she relaxed in the
evenings. Lara sat on the other end and Gena was telling her some of what
the movie was about however as soon as the movie popped up, she saw Lara's
eyes become glued to the TV screen.
As the movie played, she watched Lara as much as she did the
movie. It was so much fun just to see Lara laugh and appear not to have a
care in the world. Gena knew that this was something that Lara needed after
a hard stress filled week. The bad part was the worst was yet to come as
once her father was arrested, Lara would have to testify against him and
Gena wasn't sure that Lara was strong enough to do that. But for this
moment, Lara was having fun. When the movie ended, Lara wanted to watch it
again, Gena offered to put another movie on but Lara was set on watching
this one. So Gena put it on and was pleasantly surprised that Lara laughed
as much the second time around as she did the first time.
"I don't know about you but I'm ready for some sleep," Gena said to
Lara as the movie ended.
Lara tried to fight off a yawn but in the end she couldn't, "I guess
I am too," She said with a sleepy smile.
"At least I got you to change into your gown so I don't have to
dress you for bed," Gena said laughing a bit as she got up.
"So that's why you had us dress in our gowns so early," Lara said
giving her a shy smile.
"Yep, there was a method to my madness," Gena said laughing.
"I can see that," Lara said with a little laugh and a smile yet Gena
could see sadness in that smile.
"You get a good night's sleep okay; don't worry about tomorrow until
tomorrow," Gena told her.
"I'll try..." Lara told her.
"It'll work out," Gena tried to assure her but she wasn't so sure
about that herself. She knew that Sam would have everything covered but
that didn't mean that someone wouldn't slip through his net no matter how
secure that net was.
What time are they moving in?" Lara asked.
"About six AM I think." Gena told her.
"Okay, I'll see you in the morning." Lara told her and she gave Gena
a smile as she walked toward the spare bedroom.
Gena stood there watching Lara go and she said a silent prayer that
everything would go smoothly tomorrow. She knew that Lara had suffered
enough but that didn't mean that there wouldn't be more suffering to
come. Gena turned off the lights and went on to bed. She set her alarm for
four-thirty as she wanted to be up long before Lara and also be ready for
what was to come. She had to be prepared for anything that might come.
Gena had a little trouble going to sleep as she couldn't stop
herself from going over in her mind what may happen and what could go
wrong. She could only hope that Lara would be able to sleep though she
doubted that would be the case. She figured that Lara was tossing and
turning just like she was. However she was able to finally drift off and
get some sleep.
When her alarm went off and she got the sleep out of her head, she
wasn't too surprised to smell coffee and also smell pancakes being
made. She got up and went to the bathroom before heading to the
kitchen. She found that Lara was already dressed in a pair of her old sweat
suits as she stood by the stove.
"That smells great," Gena said as she entered the kitchen.
"Thank you, I decided on pancakes this morning but they're not
turning out as well as I had hoped. I'm either making them too big or too
small." Lara said with a frown on her face.
"You know what?" Gena asked her.
"What?" Lara turned to ask as Gena took her first sip of coffee of
the day.
"I bet either one will taste great if you make some more of that
maple syrup of yours," Gena said with a smile and a wink.
"I think I can do that," Lara said giving her a big smile.
"Good then we'll have a great breakfast," Gena told her.
"You want to make the syrup?" Lara asked her.
"Sure I would love to, but I don't want to ruin it so watch me
carefully." Gena said bringing her coffee over to the stove.
"I will, I promise," Lara told her then she told her what to do as
she finished making the pancakes. They worked side by side cooking and
talking mostly about the maple syrup but also about the movie that they had
watched the previous night. And as they ate, Lara asked about what other
comedies that Gena had and which one they would watch next. At five-thirty,
Gena went to get dressed into a pair of jeans and blouse. She also got her
gun out as she wanted it available in case they had to split and she would
have to hide Lara before the DEA could come and get her and take her to a
safe place. She got her police radio and went to the kitchen where Lara was
finishing putting the breakfast dishes into the dish washer.
"Is it time?" Lara asked seeing both the radio and gun.
"I'm afraid so." Gena said as she turned on the radio. She put the
gun by the coffee maker leaving it there as she got her cup of coffee and
coming to the table and sitting down to Lara's right side at the table.
"Do you think Sam can get my father and brothers?" Lara asked.
"I do." Gena said putting her hand on Lara's shoulder and giving it
a squeeze.
"Good, I believe that he can to," Lara said but Gena could see that
Lara was trying to make herself believe that but not completely succeeding.
Gena had the radio on the channel of the DEA knowing that was where
the action was going to be. There was not much talking at first as the DEA
agents were moving into position. Then she heard one of the agents saying
that the cook was arriving at the gate. The action then began, just after
the gate opened, they got the maid out of her truck and replaced her with
several agents. They both listened carefully as the agents moved in. There
was a lot of talking as the agents moved around the house covering all the
exits that Lara had pointed out. The female agent that was now dressed as
the mail entered the house, saying that it was clear. Nothing happened for
a couple of moments leaving both Gena and Lara wondering what was
happening. Time seemed to stop as the seconds creped by. Gena was getting
more nervous as those seconds ticked off and she could see how tense and
stressed that Lara was.
Then the silence in the room was broken as an agent came on in a
surprisingly calm voice saying that shots had been fired. Gena could hear
that it sounded like a war as there were guns going off one after the other
through the radio.
"Oh god!" Gena heard Lara gasp then she saw that she was
crying. Gena slid up against Lara pulling her into her arms as she cried
and they both listened to numerous agents hollering through the radio
positioning themselves to safe areas as they returned fire. There would be
guns going off then silence before more guns going off. It seemed like the
battle was going on for hours but only about fifteen minutes passed before
they heard Sam come on the radio to cease fire. There was silence for a
moment then Sam called for a couple of ambulances to come to the house,
there were a couple of agents with minor injuries.
"What about my brothers and father?" Lara asked as she pulled away
from Gena.
"I don't know," Was the only reply Gena could give her.
There was a lot of talk going on but Gena couldn't really tell just
what was going on. She wanted them to mention something about Lara's family
but nothing was coming across the radio that is until Sam asked for the
coroner to come to the house. Lara looked at Gena who could only shrug her
shoulders. There was nothing more about what had happened for a while, just
Sam getting things in order and securing the house. Gena was dying to know
what was happening and she could see the stress in Lara's face. Gena got up
to refill her coffee cup and get Lara a Mountain Dew. Just as she sat down,
Gena's cell phone rang scaring the hell out of both of them.
Gena put her hand to her heart giving Lara a smile as she was doing
much the same thing. Gena picked up the phone, opening it and seeing that
it was the sheriff. She had no more than said "Hello" when the sheriff
started to talk. From that point on, all she got in was several "Yes
Sir's," and no more. She could see Lara leaning over trying to hear what
was being said but Gena didn't let her. She needed to tell Lara in her own
words what had happened, the sheriff was a good man and a good sheriff but
he did lack any bed side manner. So Gena just listened and tried to
remember everything that he was telling her. She ended the conversation
with "Yes Sir, we're leaving now." Then she hung up.
"Oh god, they got away didn't they, they're coming after me aren't
they!" Lara screeched as she jumped up sending her chair back a few feet.
Gena saw that Lara was about to go into a full blown panic attack so
she went to her pulling Lara into her arms holding her squirming body
tightly.
"Stop holding me, I've got to get out of here!" Lara cried out to
her.
"No you don't Lara, your brothers and your father are dead." Gena
said forcefully. She didn't want to tell Lara that way but she was afraid
that she was about to lose Lara both physically and mentally.
"What?" Lara said as she began to calm down.
Gena held Lara a moment more until she felt her begin to calm down,
she then eased back but kept a tight grip on Lara's arms. "I don't know all
the details but it seems one of your brothers spotted the agents and
started to fire at them. That is what started it and when it was all done,
your brothers, your father and several of their body guards were dead. I'm
sorry to have to tell you."
"I'm glad that they are dead!" Lara said with venom in her voice and
eyes.
"I figured that you would be but there is something that they need
for you to do." Gena told her.
"What's that?" Lara asked pulling away from Gena.
"They need for you to identify their bodies." Gena said and she
paused to let that sink in before going on, "They also have gotten to your
father's computer and it is encrypted like yours was and they want you to
unlock it. Would you do that for them?" Gena asked not telling her that
she really didn't have a choice in either matter, it was something that she
was going to have to do. She just wanted Lara to feel like she had an
option.
"Sure I can do that," Lara said. "Are they all shot up?"
"I don't know honey, I'll be with you and we'll make it as quick as
possible." Gena told her.
"Then I guess we had better get going, you told the sheriff that we
were on our way." Lara told her.
Gena smiled, "I guess I did and we don't want to make a liar out of
me do we?"
"Nope," Lara said smiling however it was a forced smile at best.
Gena got her gun putting it in her purse before pouring herself a
cup of coffee into her travel mug. She had Lara grab her Mountain Dew and
they were out the door. Lara asked her to go over everything that the
sheriff had told her on the phone as they went on their way. Once Gena had
told her what little she did know, Lara turned her head toward the
passenger window and she became silent. Gena didn't know if it was better
to talk or just let Lara be, in the end, she decided that Lara needed some
time to take it all in and prepare herself for what was come. Once they
entered into Concord County, Gena got Lara to direct her toward her
father's house.
"Why you slowing down, the house is another couple of miles down the
road." Lara asked once Gena got on the street that Lara's father lived.
"We need to meet someone first," Gena told her.
"Why?" Lara of course asked.
"I don't know, I was just told to meet up with a DEA agent who is
waiting for us." Gena told her.
"Oh," Lara replied as she went back to looking out the passenger
window.
Gena went on another quarter mile before she saw a van stopped by
the side of the road. It was in an area with no houses, but woods on each
side of this upscale neighborhood. "Stay here a minute." Gena told Lara as
she stopped the car in behind of the plain white van.
Lara surprised her by not arguing. She got on out of the car going
up to the female agent. Gena talked to her a moment before going back and
tapping on Lara's window. "It looks like we are going to become DEA agents
for the day." Gena told her once the window came down.
"Why is that?" Lara asked as she got out.
"So we won't look out of place. There is a hundred DEA agents
crawling all over your father's house, two more won't seen out of
place. However two women, one dressed in jeans and the other a sweat suit,
people would notice."
Lara smiled, "I guess that makes sense."
"Yea, come on, we got people waiting on us." Gena told her as they
went to the van.
There inside of the van, Gena found two pair of slacks and two
blouses that matched what the female agent was wearing, as well as two pair
of women's shoes. Gena picked them up finding that one set was close to
what she worn and as she looked at the other; she saw that it would fit
Lara. "I think they were ready for us." Gena told Lara as she handed over
her clothes.
"I bet Sam was ready for anything." Lara said.
"Probably so, or he just wanted to cover all his bases." Gena said
figuring that the Director had planned on having to use Lara at some point
during the operation. They both striped down to their bras and panties,
and then began to get dressed in the uniforms provided for them.
"I don't know what they are going to ask you to do but it is
important for you to try your best to do what they want." Gena cautioned
her.
"Haven't I done that so far?" Lara asked.
"Yes you have." Gena replied knowing that she had hurt Lara's
feelings just a bit. "I'm sorry for implying anything; it's just that as
hard as it has been for you this week, I'm afraid that today will be even
harder."
"I can face anything as long as I know my father and brothers are
dead." Lara said harshly.
"I know you can honey, you've already face more hardships than any
person should face in a lifetime." Gena said putting her arm around Lara's
shoulder and giving her a little hug.
They heard a knock on the back of the van door and then the female
agent saying, "Are you finished dressing?"
"Almost, we'll be out in a second." Gena said to the agent and then
to Lara, "Let's hurry; we got a lot of people waiting on us."
"Yea," Lara said.
They quickly put their blouses on, tucking them into their slacks as
they went out of the van. "Come on, give me your keys, I'll drive." The
female agent told Gena.
"I don't think any of the DEA agents ever smile, their all business
and so stiff." Lara whispered to Gena.
"That's part of our training, they do surgery to remove our ability
to smile and then they do psychological training to remove our sense of
humor." The female agent said with a straight face.
Gena looked over at Lara whose jaw had dropped and she had to burst
out laughing. The agent then started to laugh and Lara knew that she had
been had. She pouted at them both for a second and then she too began to
laugh. "I'm sorry about what I said," Lara told the agent.
"It's okay, sometimes we do tend to be too stiff but I guess it
comes with the job. You know what we do can be dangerous, like today." The
agent said.
"I'm sorry about that; did any of your friends get hurt bad?" Lara
asked.
"Nah, Larry got a cut on the head from a piece of the granitic
steps. And Ernie got hit in the thigh by a bullet but he'll be fine. The
rest was just a few scrapes." She said.
"That's good then." Lara said, "What is your name anyway?"
"Hillary," She said.
"Well it is nice to meet you and you do have a sense of humor," Lara
told her.
"Don't tell Sam that, he'll have me back to undergo another session
of psychological training." Hillary said giving Lara a wink making her
laugh. "Come on, let's get in and get going or Sam will really have my
ass."
"Then let's get this over with." Lara said as Gena held the front
passenger door open for her. Then Gena got into the back as Hillary got
into the driver's seat of Gena's car.
"So what happened when you entered the house?" Lara asked of
Hillary.
Gena saw Hillary look at her through the rearview mirror. "She knows
more about what was going on than anyone. She is why we are here; I don't
think her knowing what happened will be a problem. She'll figure out enough
on her own when we get there. She might as well know what really happened."
Gena told Hillary.
"Everything was going smoothly and we were getting inside of the
house, when one of your brothers came out of the kitchen and saw us. I
think he thought that we were from whatever Latin drug cartel that they
were dealing with as he said, "You fucking spics aren't taking over from
us! Then he pulled a gun from his robe." Hillary told them.
"That had to be Buck; he always thought that someone was going to
take over. He was a hothead, the bastard." Lara spat out.
"Well Sam told him to drop his gun but instead he hid in behind the
couch and began to fire." Hillary said, "Then your father and brother came
out of their bedrooms with their guns drawn and their bodyguards were close
behind. That was when all hell broke loose and the firing began. If your
brother hadn't drawn his gun, no one would have gotten hurt."
"That's not my brothers or father's way. They were on top and had
planned on remaining that way. They probably figured that they could kill
you all and start over in another place." Lara told them.
"I guess, but it didn't have to happen that way," Hillary said with
a sigh.
"Yea it did. That was the only way it could go down," Lara told
Hillary.
"I guess," Hillary said before she went on to tell them how they
tried to get them to drop their guns even when they saw that they were
outnumbered but once they started to fire, they weren't going to stop until
they either got out of there alive or died trying. The DEA agents had
pretty much gotten into position and were able to get behind something to
protect them. Then it was a matter of maneuvering around until they could
get a good shot off. They tried to just wound them but they keep firing
even after being wounded so the DEA agents didn't have much of a choice but
to keep firing until Lara's family and their bodyguards were either dead or
dying.
By the time Hillary was finished, she was pulling into the driveway
of a rather large house. "I guess crime does pay." Gena couldn't help but
to say.
"Until you end up dead," Hillary reminded her.
"True," Gena said keeping quiet from then until Hillary pulled in
behind one of the government vehicles in the driveway. Gena got on out and
opening the door for Lara who hesitated for a moment before getting out of
the car.
"I never wanted to ever come back here again." Lara said in such a
soft voice that Gena barely heard her.
"I'll be right by your side the whole time." Gena said. "There's no
one that can hurt you inside of that house."
"I know," Lara said but still she hesitated so Gena took her elbow
and began to ease her toward Hillary who was waiting for them.
As they walked up the walkway and onto the steps, Gena saw DEA
agents moving in and out of the house. They entered through the large
double doors that were open. They entered into a large room that had the
smell of guns having been fired and the smell of blood and death. Gena was
looking around the large house and she didn't notice the covered body until
she felt Lara stopping.
Before she could say anything, Agent Stone appeared from nowhere to
stand in front of them. "I'm glad that you're here." He said to them both
and then he said to Lara, this time using some compassion in his voice, "We
need for you to identify your brothers and father, and then we need for you
to come to your father's office."
"Okay," Lara said softly and she hesitated for a second before
letting Gena move her toward the body that was partially hidden behind the
couch. Once they were there, one of the agents standing there slowly moved
the sheet back uncovering the man's face.
"That's Buck." Lara said quietly.
Agent Stone nodded to the agent and Buck was covered back up. Agent
Stone then took them to the wide marble covered stairway, leading them to
the top where several bodies were covered. Another agent uncovered the head
of a body a few steps from the stairway, "That's Johnny," Lara said just as
softly.
They were then taken in the opposite direct going past a couple of
larger men who Gena figured were the bodyguards. They were stopped in front
of another body, this one a little smaller than the rest. The sheet was
moved back however Lara didn't say anything. She stood there for a long
moment then she got down on one knee. Gena wasn't sure what Lara was doing,
it almost appeared that she was morning for the older man laying
there. Then like lightening striking the ground, Lara's right hand moved
back and she swung, slapping the dead man as hard as she could across his
face. The sound of Lara's handing hitting the dead man's face echoed
through the house. "How does that feel you fucking bastard!"
Lara's hand came back again as she said, "Call me a bitch one more
time, I dare you!" Gena then jumped and grabbed Lara pulling her up before
Lara could swing again.
"I believe that there is no doubt that this is her father." Gena
told the agents as she pulled a crying Lara to her chest.
"The bastard will never hit you again and there will be no one ever
calling you a bitch." Gena told Lara as she cried in her arms.
