"Today was a good day" .... no, no let me rephrase that ..... "Today was a
very, very GOOD DAY" And it had just started! As I hung up the phone and
looked at inventory tallies, I knew I would have to begin orders

a great bunch and it always gave me a warm rush as they congratulated me
and I congratulated them back too, as it was as much owed to them for our
success ...... Only then, when I would close the shop, shut off the lights
and everything and come home ............................ It was always to
an empty house, a cold leftover in the fridge and maybe some TV before
reading myself to sleep .............................. No one I could tell
my news to, nobody that I could make proud and mostly ...... no one person
I could just "BE" with, to enjoy holding me and me them, to have a simple
dinner with and tucking my feet under me as we sit on the sofa in the
living room, sipping coffee and talking about all the things that happened
that day .......... Yes, thats what is like for me and I know, also for

quirped Rebecca ....... Absolutely, said John as he pretended to price
hiking boots ..... Nope, not till noon class at the pool, said Bill as he
just smiled that damn cocky squint of his that all the students (female
that is) go "Ga Ga" over before he tells them he's very happily married and
would they like to babysit for him sometime. "Arrrrrggggg, you guys are
worse then lil kids! Don't I have any privacy anymore?!"
............. Nope, says Rebecca, at least not the way we've seen you
lately ....... Something's up boss and it's written all over you from the

Looking around at everyone, I just give up and smile ......... When I think
about it, it was really only these people who were even remotely my friends
and even though employee's, they were always there for me now that I
thought about it and even when I was sick, they would run the store and
even come over to my place with (Yes, CHICKEN SOUP) and see how I was
doing. "Why?!" I had never done anything like that for them, not even so
much as a "How are you feeling", when they were sick and came to work
anyway. No, there was something here that I had never even realized before
.................. before Shaunee had entered my life that is
....................... and it was, I realized ..... plain ol human
kindness and caring. "OK ok ... You win, you rats!!!" I'm not a rat, I'm a

time!" Giving up and laughing with them, I tell them all " Well WHATEVER
you are, your all going to be a lot busier ... We just got one big contract
and your all getting raises!" As I step back into my office and close the
door, I can't help but smile as I hear the cheers outside the door. Twenty
or so minutes later a lil knock on the door just as I have finished leaving
my tenth message with my silent angel. "Yeah Rebecca, come in" ...... A
smiling redhead walks in and sits down in my desk chair and just folds her
hands in her lap as she tells me "I'm waiting" ......... after an awkward
silence I just tell her "I haven't got the slightest idea what your talking
about and shouldn't you be scurrying up nuts before the snow hits?!"
Laughing she just says "You know what I mean, you have been on cloud 9
since i saw you this morning and you can't tell me it's because of the

..........................Unreal!!!! ............ How did she know?! I
didn't tell anyone .... Did it show so much? Was I that much of an open
book? Then she tells me, "Oh I know you won't admit it but when I think on
it, you haven't been the "Ice Woman" that we have all grown used to and
honey, you have melted since that day we all did the pizza thing." Stunned
and lost for words, surprised that she could see through me so easily and
making mental notes not to take for granted the observation skills of my
staff in the future, I was saved by the intercom as John called for assist
in the wet gear dept. Quickly getting up and heading for the door, Rebecca
tells me "congratulations" and heads back to work smiling.

Asking John to close up today (As he is a third year business school
student, he is my sometime store manager too), I head home early because if
I get one more "BEEP", I swear I'll climb through the phone and strangle
that cute lil neck of hers! The entire drive home, I have images of flaming
roofs, yellow police tape all over the yard, panicked barking puppy running
around the house wildly and worse. Speeding more than I should, I
eventually make it home and drive up the driveway, seeing Shaunee's car
there at least let me know she was home. Getting out of the Blazer, I can

I walk to the house It gets louder and then "Trumpets?!" Opening the front
door, I walk in and my ears woke up real quick! Air drumming in the living

on. Playing on the TV was one of my concert DVD's "Fleetwood Mac" and
"Tusk" was blaring through the surround sound! .......................
When someone you love, has you worried so sick that when you see them safe

make up on a fast drive home from work

why did you call my cell? You have phones all over the house and I didn't
