Second Time Around

Happy Birthday to Me

Danny turned off the engine and got out of the car.  I undid my seat belt
and slowly followed her.  My legs were stiff from the drive so I stretched
them as I walked.  Danny had already undone the boot and was hauling our
bags out.  I took them off her and quickly walked off before she could
complain.

My birthday was the next day and Danny had insisted on taking me up to her
parent's holiday house in the bush.  I hated people making a fuse over me,
especially on my birthday, and had protested about going all Thursday.  But
it was now Friday and here we were.

I waited at the door as Danny fumbled with the keys.  I took a minute to
look around.  The sun was setting so there was minimal light.  The only
other house I could see was a medium sized dot on the horizon.  At least we
had privacy.  I'm sure I could scream inside and no one would hear me.
Cool.  Unless I wanted someone to hear me.
  Although the one making the noises would probably be Danny and she
wouldn't be screaming for help- she tended to be a little noisy in bed -
but that's the way I liked it.  I grinned.

"You coming in or are you planning on staying out there all night?"

I turned around to find Danny standing in the doorway.  I walked past her
still carrying the bags and trying to get the grin off my face.

"Where should I put them?"

"The bed room" Danny walked past me and I followed.

The bedroom was nice.  It was bigger than ours at home and was mainly
occupied with a large king size bed.  I placed the bags down at the foot of
it.

"Do you want coffee?" Danny was standing in the doorway.

"Yeah.  Thanks" I grabbed another jumper from my bag and put it on before
heading into the kitchen to find Danny.

I came up behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist.  I kissed her
neck and breathed in her smell, which was a mixture of shampoo, soap and a
little perfume.  She smelled good.  I rested my head on her shoulder while
she made our coffees.  Danny had switched the radio on when she had come in
and it was now playing quietly in the background.  She hummed quietly along
with it while she poured the boiling waiter into two mugs.

We stayed there for a moment while we let our coffee sit to cool a little.
I moved my hands around to her lower back and started to massage the
muscles on either side of her spine with my thumbs.  She sighed and moved
her neck from one side to the other as she stretched her neck muscles.  I
rubbed her back before picking up our coffees and heading over to the
couch.  I knew how lucky I was to have her.

That night after a simple dinner Danny and I sat on the couch and talked
while the TV was on quietly in the background.  Danny was sitting up with
her feet on the coffee table while I was laying down on my side with my
head resting in her lap.  I was starring at the TV but wasn't paying
attention to what was on.  Danny was running her fingers through my hair
and I was enjoying that.  With her spare hand she fiddled with my
shirtsleeve and would occasionally stroke my arm.

"We've been going out for nearly nine months" Danny tucked some hair behind
my ear.

I smiled "I know" I had been thinking about it the other day.

"Maybe we could go out for dinner or something"

"I would like that" In my last relationship we had never really celebrated
any type of anniversary and it would be nice to for a change "Do you have
any place in mind?"

Danny thought for a moment "There's a nice seafood place near the water.
I've been wanting to take you there for awhile"

"Sounds good" I traced circles around her kneecap with my finger.

There were a few minutes of silence.  I wondered if Danny had something on
her mind, as she had been a little quieter then usual during the week.

"What are you thinking about?" I continued my circles but on the other
knee.

"Nothing"

"Come on, tell me"

She was silent for another minute before she spoke.  She stopped stroking
my hair "You ever think about having kids?"

I think my heart stopped.  Danny must of felt me tense up and started to
stoke my hair again "It's nothing really.  I was just wondering what your
thoughts were on it.  Don't worry about it" She tried to change the subject
"Amy got a new job at a clinic just out of the city"

I breathed again "What made you ask?" I guessed this was what had been on
her mind all week.

"Hmm?"

"About having kids?"

"Oh.  I said it was nothing"

"It's not nothing.  You brought it up, tell me" I rolled over onto my back
so I could look up at her.

She looked down at me "On Monday at the hospital I was talking to a women
who had just given birth.  She's gay.  I met her partner too.  I don't
know.  I always wanted kids when I was younger, but then I realized I was a
lesbian and I never really gave it another thought.  I guess I kind of
ruled it out, but I suppose it's still a possibility"

"So you want kids?"

She played with a lock of my hair "Yeah.  Not now, but some day"

I thought.  I had always wanted kids too, but like Danny had said, not for
another few years.  I tried to imagine Danny pregnant.  I always thought

that would be carrying your child.  I smiled.

"What about you?"

I looked back up at Danny.  She looked kind of worried, most likely about
what I would say.  She had her hand across my stomach and I put my hand on
top of hers.  I didn't really know what to say.  "I would like to start a
family one day too.  With you"

Danny smiled "Really?"

I nodded "I'd like a son, I think"

Danny kissed my forehead "I was worried how you'd react"

I moved some hair out of her face "Well, you had me worried too.  For a
split second I thought you could be pregnant, until I remembered I wasn't I
guy and couldn't do that to you"

Danny's smile grew "Well, the strap on doesn't have in built sperm so I
think you might have a hard time even if you did try"

The next morning I awoke to the feeling of Danny's lips on the back of my
neck.  She was lying on top of me.

"Happy birthday, baby" She whispered in my ear before nibbling it.

"Hmph" I made some sort of noise into the bed

Danny sat up so she was straddling me and started to massage my back "You
got to wake up if you still want to go on that walk"

I had forgotten all about that.  I had told Danny that I wanted to go on a
bush walk on a near by trail.  I had looked at some maps and found a place
were we could stop for lunch, which was by a creek.  The track circled
around so we would end back near where we had started.

Danny got off me and I sat up.  I crawl over to her and kissed her lips

"Ashley, we have to get ready" She always called me by my full name when

around to see Danny pulling a shirt over her head.

We both had a quick breakfast and made some lunch to take with us.  I swung
the daypack onto my bad, put on my hat and met Danny at the door.  After
all my complaining about coming up here, I was actually really looking
forward to our walk and the rest of the day.

It was currently spring and the winter chill had been replaced by fresh air
and sunlight.  Leaves crunched and twigs snapped as we walked.  I enjoyed
hiking - although I wouldn't really call this a hike.  I usually went on a
four-day hike twice a year with a group of friends, although this year was
an exception.  It wasn't because I was tied up by being with Danny, but for
once I didn't feel the need to get away and was really enjoying being with
her when I could.

The air smelled fresh, with a strong hint of Eucalyptus and bark.  I could
hear a number of different birds calling, both near by and in the distance.
To my right I heard a Kookaburra.  A few minutes later there was a response
from behind as its laugh echoed out around us.  Danny and I were silent as
we walked, with both of us just taking in our surroundings.  It sure was a
good change from our usual busy cities and suburban lifestyle.

After nearly two hours of walking we came to the creek.  Danny sat down on
a rock as I went over to take a closer looker.  I washed my hands and face
in it before walking back over to Danny and taking a seat on another rock.
I took of the pack and got out some water.  After having a sip I passed the
bottle to Danny.

"Thanks" She took a sip and put the bottle down at her feet.  I watched her
wipe the sweat off her forehead and then wipe her hand on her shorts.  The
last half over of the walk had been up hill slightly and with the sun, we
had both worked up a bit of a sweat.

"You ready for lunch?"

Danny nodded.  I stood and kick a few gum-nuts out of the way before
spreading out a light picnic rug.  I threw the pack down on it and took a
seat on one side of it before Danny wondered over and joined me.  We ate as
we talked about Danny's work at the hospital.

We got back to the house around 4 in the afternoon.  By that time the air
was starting to cool as the sun got lower in the sky.  We both stripped off
and showered together with each of us taking up the task of washing the
other.

Shortly after we had finished in the shower Danny started on dinner.  I had
offered to help but she refused and pushed me out of the kitchen and told
me that she didn't want to see me in there until dinner was ready.
Something about me being the birthday girl.  I went to the couch and read
my book.

Dinner was beautiful.  Danny was an awesome cook, especially in contrast to
my cooking abilities.  I put my knife and fork on my plate and looked
across at her as she took her last mouthful.  Her eyes met mine and she
smiled before taking a sip of her wine.

"I got you a present"

I stopped, about to take a sip form my glass "I thought I told you I didn't
want anything"

Danny nodded "I know, but I didn't listen.  It's just something small.  I
couldn't not get my girlfriend something for her birthday"

"Yeah you could of"

Danny moved her chair closer to me.  She held out her hand.  In it was a
silver bracelet.  I watched as she took my hand in hers and then put it on
my wrist.  A smile grew on my face as I looked down at it.

"I wasn't really sure what to get you, but I knew you like silver, so."

"Thanks" I kissed her "I really like it"

I knelt down in front of the fireplace and examined it for a moment.

"Do you know what you're doing?"

I turned around to see Danny smiling.  She placed two glasses of red wine
on the coffee table and then sat down on the couch.

"Yes.  As a matter of fact I do" I turned back around and continued at my
task of stacking the wood.

"Oh, cute and multi-skilled" she teased.

I pushed a fire lighter between two bits of wood "Yes.  Aren't you lucky" I
looked across at her before lighting a match.  The white cube burst into
blue flames as it started to burn.

I sat there for a while as I watched the fire slowly spread to the other
pieces of wood.  I then got up and joined Danny on the couch.  She moved,
about to put her feet on the floor but I stop her and put her legs across
my lap.  I leant over to pick up my wine.

"Thanks for lighting the fire" Danny rested her head on the back of the
couch as she looked at me.  She took a sip from her wine.

"Thanks for dinner.  I really enjoyed it" I ran my hand over a leg that was

was a few moments of silence.

"How's that project going that you're working on?" Danny was referring to a
short film that I was making with a small group of people.  In the past
couple of weeks I had done a few all nighters in the studio editing with
another guy.

I started to massage her foot "It's alright" I took another sip from my
wine "We got good coverage so it's been pretty easy to put together.  The
audio is time consuming though.  I might actually be happy with it" I was
pretty fussy.  I had written and directed it and was determined to get it

"When can I see it?" She ran the tips of her fingers along my cheek

I thought, "When it's finished"

"So you'll actually let me see this one?"

I paused.  I had done one earlier on in the year and had refused to let her
see it.  I guess I had to get used to it sooner or later.  Though later was
sounding better.  She stroked my cheek again.  There went my will "Sure.
I'll let you see it"

Danny smiled "Thanks" She sipped her wine "So that's what you want to do
when you finish uni?"

I nodded "I don't know if it'll ever happen, but if I could do anything it
would be directing.  I know some people" I had some wine "we can team up
and form our own crew" I started to massage her other foot "Though I'll
probably have to get a proper job so I can pay the bills.  Maybe dreams are
just dreams"

"I can pay them"

That shocked me. "Sweetie, it wouldn't be fair to let you support me"

"I'm offering," I went to speak but Danny cut in "And when you're films
start to earn a bit of money you can pay your part of the bills again if
you're that worried about it"

I looked at her "We'll see"

I sighed quietly and looked over at the fire, which was now burning well.
I smiled at my handiwork before diverting my attention back to Danny's legs
which where still in my lap.  I ran my hand up her leg from her foot to her
knee and then started to stroke the bottom of her thigh.  I liked Danny in

breathing quicken slightly.

"Ashley?"

"Hello?"

"Ash, where are you?"

"Hey Mark.  I'm in the bush"

"What?  Like camping?"

"No.  Danny and I are spending the weekend at her parent's holiday place.
It was sort of a last minute thing, sorry I didn't let you know"

"That's cool.  Tried your place a couple of times but got no answer.  Was
going to drag you out and have a few birthday drinks with you"

Danny walked over to me and started to unbutton my shirt as she kissed my
neck and ear.

"Ah.  Yeah" I slowly breathed out "Maybe next weekend then"

My shirt was now hanging open and Danny had moved to my jeans, which were
now on their way to falling to the floor.

"Ok.  Cool.  So how are things anyway?  We haven't spoken for awhile"

"I'm good.  Quite well" Danny ran her hand over my stomach and headed
towards the bedroom.  I followed "How have you been?"

"Oh I'm good!  I met this guy last week and we spent the day together.  I
think you'd like him."

I sat down on the bed and watch Danny strip.

".maybe the four of us could go out to dinner some time soon or something"

"Sounds good" Danny walked over to me and straddled me again, but this time

bed and stood up.

"Wait, I'll help" Danny slipped out from under the covers.  She was still

"A few times" Danny tilted her head to the side to give me better access to
her neck. "I thought you said you're starving?" She tied her robe, kissed
me on the lips and then walked out of the room.  I followed as I tied my
hair back.

In the kitchen I cracked open some eggs and beat them before putting them
in the pan.  Danny popped some toast in as I did the eggs.

"What do you want to drink?" Danny whacked me on the ass as she passed on
the way to the fridge.

"Coke"

"You can't have that for breakfast"

"OJ"

"That's better" She took the orange juice from the fridge and poured us a
drink.
