Big Thanks to my new editor Steph, the ultimate spell check.
My mom's presence was the first thing I noticed when I
got home. Immediately, upon crossing the threshold, my
nostrils were assaulted with the delicious scent of stew
peas and rice (my favorite) and I could hear the faint
sounds of Dr. Phil coming from the living room. I guess my
mom came home early and decided to cook. Good, before my run
with Alex I was too nervous to eat, and now I felt like I
was about to collapse. I Kicked off my shoes and followed my
nose to the kitchen. My mom was sitting at the kitchen
table, reading the daily paper and occasionally sipping tea.
I shared out a large portion of food, pulled out a chair and
sat down across from her. She lazily looked up when she saw
me sit, only to returning to her paper after making eye
contact, her way of saying hi. I ate and she read, the
turning of the page and the occasional clink of the fork
against the plate was the only noise that was heard.
Abruptly my mom broke the peaceful silence.
"Zari's out with that John boy." She stated. It took me
a while to realize she was talking because well, I was
thinking about Alex.
"Oh.yea she told you?" I know Zari and mom were close but
I didn't think she would tell mom about a guy that she
literally just met.
"I met him after you left, he seems nice, charming and
funny." Mom smiled slightly. It was like I entered the
twilight zone. I was having a normal conversation with my
mom, about my sisters charmingly, funny boyfriend. The
conversations that my mom and I have, usually consist of hi,
bye and it's your day to do the dishes. I was getting used
to the sudden mother daughter bonding moment when my mom
asked, "When will I meet your boyfriend?" All the blood
rushed to my face, and I actually felt a little dizzy.
Nothing made sense, my mom who I really don't talk to is
asking me about my non-existent boyfriend, who will forever
be non-existent because.I'm.
"I know we're not exactly close," most likely the biggest
understatement in the history of understatements, "but.if
you need to, you can talk to-"
"Okay, I have to go do some homework so..." I quickly
stood up putting an end to whatever moment we had.
"Okay, it's your day to do the dishes." Mom said coolly
returning to her paper, unaffected and unfazed everything
was back to normal.
"We had to come back because my mom was coming home early
and I knew she would freak if I came home late, so it was
his idea to just meet her then and there and sort of get
permission to go stay out even later." Zari was sitting
cross legged in the centre of my bed with a big sickening
smile on her face.
"Wow isn't he clever."
"Oh my god! That's totally what I said to him." She
exclaimed, totally missing the sarcasm in my voice. She got
back from her date with Johnny boy about an hour ago, and
after briefly conversing with mom she came straight my room
and hasn't left.
"So, you sure all you guys did was make out, I mean you
left the house after six and it's like 10 something. A lot
can happen in four hours." Zari rolled her eyes.
"You know me better than anyone else, obviously what I
say happened is the honest to God truth." I was across the
room, sitting on top of my dresser. Zari raised an eyebrow
as she studied my face, something she does often when she
has some sort of revelation or something. I still felt
unsettled from the "moment" I had with mom, so I looked down
and away from her gaze. "That's the difference between me
and you. I tell you everything, but you hide so much Kira, I
don't think you even know who you really are," Her gaze was
burning my skin but I refused to look up.
"Who even knows who they really are? It takes lifetimes
to figure yourself out."
"I know who I am, and trust me being honest with yourself
makes the process even easier." I hopped off the dresser and
decided I might need to go for another run. Living in this
house was getting a bit too bizarre.
"Yeah well, watching one episode of Dr. Phil doesn't mean
you can start analyzing random people." I said as I left my
room.
"You're not a random person you retard, you're my
sister." She shouted to my back.
part 2
The days grew shorter and colder and being around Alex
was intoxicating. In her presence I felt like I was having
some kind of psychedelic experience. Colours seemed
brighter, air seemed crisper, life was better. The more time
I spent with her, the more I let go and slowly began to
allow my self to fall for her. However, I was still very
careful, I was constantly censoring myself and making sure
that no amount of my true feelings ever leaked out.
"So we basically just moved here and yea." It was now
October. Alex and I were at her house, or rather outside it,
sitting on the steps leading to her front door.
"I guess I don't have to ask you if you like it here."
"Actually you would be surprised," She hugged her knees
to her chest. "I was going through some stuff at my old
school.I was definitely more. stressed. Here I can focus
on.important stuff." She sighed softly, her voice filled
with remorse.
"You okay?"
"Yea," she looked over at me and smiled, sadly. "You
wanna come inside, it's kinda cold." As if on cue, a gust of
icy wind blew by.
"Yea." I wasn't really cold.
Alex's house was filled with unpacked boxes.
"As you can see, we're not finished unpacking yet."
Alex said as she led me up a winding staircase. The floors
were black marble and as we passed the kitchen I saw granite
counter tops, basically my mom's dream house.minus all the
boxes.
"Nice floors,"
"Thanks, come, my room is this way." My stomach did a
little flip, I tried to calm my nerves because now was not a
good time to have a heart attack over nothing, I mean it's
just a room. Alex's room had no boxes, and no bed. There was
a bed actually, it was just a mattress on the floor, but it
was neat. The long side of it touched the wall, and opposite
the bed was a dresser that had nothing on it. Beside the
dresser was a large full sized mirror. The baby blue walls
were almost bare except for a few framed photographs above
the bed. Between the bed and the dresser was a lap top
propped up on a tiny desk, the desk was cluttered with
papers and pictures. "Yeah," Alex noticed how surprised I
looked, "I kind of need to buy furniture or something, I'm
so used to living in a dorm. When I first moved back home
this room was a gym I had to sleep in the guest room."
"Oh I didn't know the academia was a boarding school."
She walked over to the lime green chair that was stationed
in front of the computer desk. I took a few steps behind me
and sat down on the bed.
"Well, there are some students who live at home and
commute but when I first got accepted I was in grade 7 and
we lived two hours outside the city so I thought it was a
better idea to live there."
"That must have been fun, no parents, totally freedom
but ew you were surrounded by teachers all the time."
"Yea the teacher thing sucked," Jackie smiled at the
slight frown on my face, "but it was cool my roommate Wends
was my best friend and after school our curfew was like 12
but we knew how to sneak in and out so it wasn't a big
deal."
"Cool, who's Wends" I looked behind me at the pictures
on the wall. "The blonde one, with the blue streak," Wends
was easy to spot she was in all the pictures laughing; It
seemed that no one was aware that the pictures were being
taken. In the photos everyone was focused on something other
than the camera. It was just her friends genuinely having a
good time. "She's pretty." I said automatically, she was.
Her long wavy hair was Platinum blonde, blonder than Alex's,
and she had short bangs that framed her face.
"Yea, she is," Alex got up and moved beside me, "and
that's Anna." She said pointing to a red head in a picture
of about 6 all lounging around in a living room. Anna was
partly lying on a couch and on Adrian, her eyes were closed.
The three of us were really close."
"So what happened?" Alex turned away from the picture
and looked at me before quickly looking back at the picture.
"I left and we drifted apart I guess." It took her a
while to answer. I intently studied the side of her face.
"Hmm, well you should call them, I mean it sounds like
you miss them a lot." Alex turned to me with big sad eyes. I
couldn't guess the millions of things that were possibly
going through her head at that moment but oh my god I knew
what was going through mine. It took all my will power not
to move an inch, maybe two and eliminate the space between-
but I couldn't so instead I got up quickly and walked over
to the door.
"I should probably get going.now." My heart pounded
loudly in chest, I was sure she could probably hear it.
"Why are you blushing?" Oh god! I'm blushing I didn't
even realize. My cheeks got redder as I explained.
"My face just does that sometimes." I tried to smile
sheepishly and to my relief Alex laughed.
"Whatever you say, I'll walk you out." And that's when
we heard the front door open.
"Alexia honey, we're home." A female voice called from
downstairs, Alex's mom I'm guessing.
"And we've got groceries!" exclaimed a very different
female voice. Alex never told me she had a sister. I was
about to inquire when Alex gave me a knowing glance and put
her finger to her lips.
"I'll be right back," She whispered, "stay here." She
left the room probably to go tell her mom she had a guest.
Patiently I waited as I strained to here the mumbled voices
coming from the kitchen. In reality I was only waiting for
two minutes but it felt like an hour. I was just about to
make an excuse and go downstairs when I heard footsteps
making their way up the stairs. Alex was back.
"Okay do you have everything? Let's go?" she looked a
bit flushed as she led me down the stairs to the kitchen.
Alex's mom was waiting for me in the kitchen while another
was unpacking groceries.
"Uh hi, Miss. uh..."
"Miss Kay," Alex's mom interjected, Miss Kay looked
like a teenager trying to play grown up. She had the same
playful eyes like Alex, in fact they looked very much alike,
but Alex's features were sharper. "And that's Debbie, my
cousin." Debbie also looked like a grown up teenager but she
looked nothing like Alex and her mom. Debbie had brown hair,
friendly brown eyes and olive skin the complete opposite (of
or from) the Kays. I smiled politely.
"Hi Debbie."
"Hi," Debbie smiled back, "you've been quiet an
influence in Alexia's life I hear. Somehow you've got her
training again."
"uh." I wasn't really sure if I was being asked a
question or not. Alex frowned.
"She means thanks for getting Alex active again, for a
while she was all mopey and depressed but then she met you
and voila she's almost back to the way she was." Miss Kay
smiled warmly at me. I smiled back.
"Yes yes, it's great to have her out of the house, you
should take her out on weekends too we wouldn't mind
really."
"Uh." I turned to Alex, she was turning a familiar
shade that I knew all too well.
"OK. Well Kira has to go." She pulled on my arm as she
began walking to the door.
"Bye Miss Kay, Bye Debbie" I waved as Alex pulled me
away.
"Bye Kira." Debbie and her mom chanted.
"Don't forget you can come on the weekends and take her
out any time, she's always free." Debbie yelled and Alex
practically pushed me out the front door.
