Kasey & Valdera
By: Lydia Capleton

"Where are you going?!" Kasey tried to hold the brunette's arm only to have
it shrugged off as the shorter girl continued to pack her duffle bag.

"Val, PLEASE talk to me! What is happening?" Valdera turned to the shoulder
length blonde haired girl and took a deep breath and exhaled before
answering.

"I found an apartment downtown it's closer to my job. It just makes sense."
Valdera's voice trembled as she threw her duffle bag around her
shoulder. "I can't- I love you but I can't be with you. Kasey it hurts too
damned much to be here with you."

"NOTHING happened Val why won't you believe me? I love YOU I don't want
anyone else." Kasey grabbed her hands and this time Valdera didn't pull
away but tears were now flowing from her eyes. "Please don't leave me."

Valdera shook her head and wiped her eyes with her sleeve and cursed when
she realized her eyeliner and mascara was now smudged and she knew she
looked like a mess. She didn't want to leave in tears. She wanted Kasey to
know how angry she was and to leave with her head held high. No she didn't
want to leave like this. "You left me!" She told the taller girl and turned
around to head for the door.

Kasey grabbed her duffle bag strap to stop her. "It's the Army Val, I can't
just not show up you know this and Jasmine...I was just carpooling with
her."

Valdera turned around and held her hand up gestured for the other girl to
stop. "I needed you and you weren't here. I was hurting and I found this."
She turned to the counter grabbed a piece of paper and handed it to Kasey.
"I will grab the rest of my things later in the week some time." Valdera
turned around and hugged the taller girl. Confused Kasey hugged her
back. Embraced Valdera continued to say next to her ear, "we are on two
different paths now. You've got your obligations and I need to find my
own." She kissed her cheek and with that she left. Kasey opened the letter
and instantly recognized it.

"Fuck!"

6 Months earlier

"Two people per box please I do not want to see anyone get hurt today it's
too beautiful out!" The head volunteer announced as all the volunteers
helped empty the 18-wheeler truck filled with food.

"Do you want to help me with the next one?" The brunette asked the blonde
haired girl next to her.

"Yeah sure let's do it." The crate was handed to them and together they
moved it to the other side of the parking lot. Forty-five minutes later
they sat down and drank from their water bottles. "I'm Kasey" the taller
girl introduced herself. "I'm Valdera" they shook hands, "Do you do this
often?" Valdera asked. "No, this is my first time just trying to stay busy
I guess." Kasey said as she took another sip from her bottle, "What about
you?" Valdera took off her hoodie and tied it around her waist. "This is
my first time too I just moved here about a month ago. I saw an ad online
for this volunteer opportunity and thought why not?" Kasey smiled at her
and they were interrupted when someone shouted that they needed more
volunteers to help inside. Without saying a word the two made a silent
agreement that they were going to volunteer together.

"OK thank you everyone for your help today we really appreciate it! If you
need proof that you volunteered today please come back inside and we'll
give you a note and don't forget to sign out." The head volunteer shouted.

"Would you like to grab some lunch?" Kasey asked. "Yeah! Oh but I can't I
have an interview at 3 today," said Valdera, "But take my number and let's
get together some time this week?" Kasey nodded and took out her cell
phone. "I will text you so you can have my number as well."

---------------

Valdera pulled up to her apartment and walked inside to be greeted by a
foul odor evidently coming from the kitchen. "Justine?" Her roommate poked
her head around the corner. "Yeah I know I'm sorry I'm trying to salvage
the situation here I forgot I was baking this casserole. Sorry!" Valdera
opened the windows and the patio door. "Oh good idea" Justine said as she
tied the trash bag and left to go outside to the dumpster. Valdera sat down
on the built in seating area on the patio when she felt her phone vibrate
in her pocket. She looked down to see a text message from a phone number
she didn't recognize.

Hey Val, this is Kasey. Let me know if you want to grab coffee or
something some time. It was great meeting you.

Valdera smiled as she texted her back. After checking her emails she
decided to return inside to get ready for her job interview.

-------------------------

Kasey pulled up into her parking spot and grabbed the bags of groceries
from the trunk before heading inside to her apartment. After putting the
food away she sat down on the couch and checked her phone.

Valdera: I'm going to the dog park in a few. Would you like to meet?

Kasey: I didn't know you had a dog.

Valdera: I don't, I'm dog sitting for my roommate. It's such a nice day
out. I'm going to the one off of Johnson Street if you'd like to join us.

Kasey: Sounds fun. See you there.

-------------------------

Valdera threw the ball towards the other side of the park and the energetic
German Shepard/lab mixed dog ran and happily fetched for it. "Drop
it. Paw? Good boy Meeko!" She praised him and gave him a treat.

"He's really smart!" A voice said behind her.

"Kasey hi!" Valdera noticed that she was holding two Styrofoam cups. "For
me?"

Kasey smiled and handed her one of them. "Yeah it's a bit on the cooler
side today even with the sun out. Hot chocolate sounded kind of perfect."

Valdera reached out and wrapped her fingers around the cup and touched
Kasey's fingers. Kasey let her hand linger for a few seconds as Valdera
said thank you. "You're welcome." She smiled and let go as they began to
walk and make small talk.

A few dog owners came into the park and Meeko was now running around with a
poodle and boxer. Chasing each other as if they were playing tag or
something. "They're like children aren't they?" Kasey commented. "It's
quite amusing to watch." They both discarded their empty cups at a near by
rubbish bin, sat down on a bench and their knees touched. Valdera looked
towards Kasey and noted how pretty the other girl was with her nose
slightly pink due to the cool air. The dimples on her face were so adorable
to her and she felt her heart skip a bit when Kasey made eye contact with
her. "I have a question for you" Valdera stated as she brushed some of
Kasey's hair from her face letting the tip of her finger slide against her
smooth forehead and side of her face. "OK" Kasey said just above a
whisper. Valdera smiled, leaned in and placed her lips against hers. Kasey
returned the pressure of her lips and they took turns gently tugging one
another's lower lips. Kasey grinned and asked, "What was your question?"
Valdera let out a beautiful laugh and said, "I was wondering if you would
mind if I did that." Kasey's face got serious and she stood up. Confused
Valdera stood up as well. Kasey pulled her body against hers and pressed
their lips together again. After a while she smiled against Valdera's face
and just above a whisper said, "I didn't mind that at all."

"How did you know?" Kasey asked as they stopped in front of Meeko to let
Valdera put on his leash. "What, that I should kiss you?" Valdera asked as
she rubbed the dog's belly as he lay on the ground. "Yeah." Kasey
confirmed as she crouched down and started rubbing Meeko's head. Valdera
shrugged and grabbed Kasey's hand as she stood up leash in the other
hand. "It just felt right I guess." Kasey smiled and just nodded in
agreement. They continued to walk around the park. "What do you do for
work?" Valdera asked. Kasey replied, "I've got a job at an insurance
company pretty easy work. I just came back from training for the Army a
few months ago." Valdera smiled, "So that it explains that." Kasey looked
at her, "explains what?" Valdera gripped her hand a little tighter "Why
you're in such great shape." Kasey blushed. "How did your job interview
go?" Valdera grabbed her hand with her free one and Kasey intertwined her
fingers in hers. "It went really well, I start Monday." They stopped in
front of Valdera's car and she let Meeko into the backseat. Woof! He
barked. "Hang on, Meeko let me say bye." Valdera laughed and closed the
door. "So what are you going to do this weekend?" Kasey asked not really
wanting this outing to end. "Well..." Valdera took her hands in hers, "I
was hoping we could meet again and get to know each other a little more."
Kasey blushed again. You are so damned cute. Valdera thought to
herself. Kasey placed her hands on Valdera's head and neck pulled her close
as she pressed her warm lips against hers. Valdera complied and decided to
rest here hands on the taller girl's waist. Kasey pulled back and gently
rubbed her thumb softly against Valdera's lower lip. "I'd like that."
