Secret
by Mary Cook

On off on off on, off, on, off. Lying in bed, I
stared at the blinking light on the video
recorder. Sleep felt like something lost, a
memory from childhood. I shifted onto my side,
the rustle of the duvet loud as the rush of her
kisses on my ear.

I willed myself to sleep. Sometimes she crept
into my bed as I dreamt, a gentle warmth on my
back. But then she would be gone before I woke,
leaving only the shape of her head imprinted on
my pillow. Her smell was all she let me keep -- a
warm, cinnamon stroke upon my nose. The
transitory impression she left on the mattress
was gently curved, inviting to my fingers.

Our lovemaking was a dream. Clouds of pleasure
shifting together, her angel breath pouring over
my ears, moist fog cradling my body.

She was separate from daylight life, a sweet gift
of night: my hidden lover.
