The Beach
By
Alexis James

IT was a cold night I thought as I sat up my whole body ached as I moved
slowly over to my wheel chair and got into it. I rolled down a long hall to
my study and out to the balcony beyond. The moon was shining brightly as I
took in the cod night air. I thought back to when I was younger and
healthier and when I first started writing

I went to my desk and started to write about two hours later my nurse Bella
came in with my meds. I answered my emails from my publisher and did my
check book. Then I heard foot steps in front me I look up to see the one
person in this world that I was longing to see. I stopped a moment to take
in her from head to toe her baseball cap to her blue shirt to her baggy
jeans then looked threw her glasses into her shining blue eyes that I could
just fall into Frances what are you doing home? I rolled my self up to her
and kissed her long and passionately until I felt I couldn't kiss her no
more.

"A month is really to long. I know you had to go to sort out business but
damn don't leave me like this ever again." She just smiled and whispered in
my ear. "I won't I have a surprise for you." We went into the bedroom where
she changed into a suite. I changed into mine really quick and we hopped
into our car and she drove to the beach as we always did at least once a
week. I got into my hand wheeled chair she pushed me out to the beach and
smiled. I wanted to cry.

There before me was a blanket with a Romanic dinner of cod and fries my
favorite and so whine. By candle light and the light of the sunset. I ate
not speaking one word the food was so good smelling the ocean air. Then we
played a few card games.

She turned to me wordlessly and kissed me pushing me down into the sand I
let my body relax into the sand as she started kissing me all the way down
my body and taking off my clothes one by one feeling the heat in between my
legs. Then I kissed her and rolled her on her back and did the same to
her. Then I heard some one coming and we got on our clothes and it was a
cop he was dressed in a state trooper's uniform. "He turned to me Hi
Ms. Pribble how you are."

"Well thanks"

"what are you wonderful woman doing out here?" he said looking down at me
as Frances cleaned up the dinner. "Jimmy we were just having dinner so I
guess I will see you Thursday night for bowling." "Guess so have a good
night."

We cleaned up everything and headed back home. As we drove home I thought
about the events over the last month it was great. Slowly I came back the
moment as we drove up to the house. My cell rang. It was my friend sara she
wanted me to go over her house for some cards and pizza. I told her good
night and jumped in my car and went to Sara's house.

Finally when I got home Frances was sleeping so I went to my study to
write. I was in the middle of a chapter when my friend James instant
messaged me. Then about an hour later I was sitting in the kitchen sipping
tea when Frances walked in.

I watched her get a glass of water before she noticed I was there in my
wheel chair in the dark. "What are you doing up?" she asked as I sat there
sipping on hot tea. "I couldn't sleep." I said as she sat there calmly
looking at me. She smiled then said she loved me that was when it
happened. Bullets came flying threw our window. Frances ran in front of
them as I drove and pushed her to the floor saving our own and each other
lives. She coved me with her own body.

Fuck I thought where in hell are my body guards. As Frances pasted out I
couldn't move beneath her as I reached in my pocket for my cell phone and
dialed 911. I felt something warm on my shoulder she had been shot in the
right arm.

19 minutes later the cops were in the room and paramedics were dragging
Frances off of me and my driver was taking me to the hospital I came out of
it with nothing more then some awful black and blues. Other then that just
wheel chair sores.

I wheeled back and forth as the doctor examined Frances in a panic oh my
god I thought as I prayed. The doctor came out and told me she had a
concussion that landed her in to a coma and the doctors didn't know when or
if she was going to wake up.

As the days went by I sat by her side not working and barely eating. I only
went home to shower and get new clothes that my house keeper washed for
me. I felt empty like a part of me had died.

Then one morning I stepped out to talk to my pastor and pray by her bedside
that she would wake ok. I felt her hand slip to mine. I was so thankful I
started to weep for the 100th time that day alone. I felt filled with joy
and overwellemed the one I loved was awake from her coma thank god.

I screamed for a nurse who ran and got the doctor. I kissed Frances and
hugged her as the doctor walked in. "what happened?" she whispered in my
ear. I looked in her eyes. "I will tell you when the doctor leaves" I said
watching the doctor.

I spent the next two days preparing her home coming a huge party and
telling her what happened. The doctor told us she would be fine and she was
also shot in the leg. She had to go threw physical therapy for six months.

The next six months was hard very I watched Frances go from a wheel chair
to nothing in a month but still had to work on walking. The doctor told us
it would take a few months, but it only took weeks.

She'd always been strong so strong at heart mind body and soul. She is a
fighter the doctor told me. One day I thought to my self more then you know
she saved me from being killed I thought.

One evening as things got back to normal. I led her out on to the beach.
She smiled there I had arranged in roses in the sand I love you written
with a candle light dinner.

"May we always be this way!" I said she held my hand and looked into my
eyes. "Thank you" she said. I smiled and pointed to a brand new black truck
over off to the right. " No, thank you for saving my life and that is a
little something for you and only you my love." I said. She kissed me and
we went for a long drive after dinner and the rest of our lives were
uneventful and still 24 years later we are still together.
