  Part 12 truth

"They told you if you sided with me that you weren't welcome in their
house either, didn't they?" Emily said looking over at her sister. She
could see the pain in her eyes before but the look that she gave Emily with
that statement confirmed it.
"They didn't say anything." Sarah said, pushing the last bits of rice and
sesame seed chicken around her plate.
"Do not lie to me Sarah. We've always been honest with each other." Emily
said, glaring at her sister.
"No. I have always been honest. You have been living a lie your entire
life." Sarah snapped. "Oh god, Em, I'm sorry." Sarah said dropping her fork
on her plate. "It just came out. Forgive me?"
Emily sighed. Sarah was right. "You have nothing to be forgiven for. You
are right. I have been living a lie. A big one. And I wish I could ask for
your forgiveness but I know that I can't. Just please, I need to know. I
need to know what they said."

Sarah looked down at her empty plate. "I know... I do Emily but I don't
know if I can."

"Sarah, I know that you are going to do what you think is best but this is
me you are talking to. I was there helping you study all those late nights
for those big test. I know those books almost as well as you do. I know
that the best thing is usually the hardest and the best thing right now for
you to do it to talk about it, get it out there in the open."
Sarah smiled sheepishly at her sister. "Shush you."
"You know I'm right, so spill." Emily said staring at her sister, whose
smile instantly dropped.
"I went in there trying to find out more, trying to figure out what
happened between Alex and Bobby. I didn't even get the chance to. Dad was
reading mom the riot act from what I can tell it was because she was trying
to defend you. Never in all my years have I ever heard dad raise his voice
much less cuss, but he was doing both. Bobby was trying to hide in his
seat. Dad stopped after he saw me walk in but by then I had heard enough. I
asked how he could say those things. He used every derogatory name to
describe you and Robert that I have ever heard. I couldn't believe he had
said those things, much less in front of his son. I know Bobby wasn't the
man or even the boy that daddy wanted him to be but to say such hateful
things..."
"What goes around comes around." Collin said, reading Emily's mind.
"I know, but if you would have seen the look on Bobby's face It was
horrible. He looked so sad. Then dad turned to him and said it."
Emily and Collin waited silently, knowing she was playing the scene out
in her head. Emily wouldn't have ever been able to tell you if it was for a
minute or an hour, but she knew that she had to hear it, no matter how bad
it hurt.
"He turned to Bobby and said `What you little fucking homo? Are you going
to cry now?'"

Emily heard a gasp and realized it was Collin and her own mixed. They were
both shocked. "Yeah, I know." Sarah said sadly.

"I can't believe Eric would say something like that. I mean... Eric. I
thought he was so supportive of Bobby. He always seemed fine with
everything." Collin said sitting forward.

Emily shook her head. "He has been for a while but it wasn't always like
that. It took a year or two of prayer, counseling and twice a week meetings
at the local P Flag for him to even be able to look at Bobby much less
anything else."

"I guess I never knew that." Collin said with a sigh as he sat back.

"I think that was the hardest year ever. I hated coming down for dinner
every night because of the tension that filled the air. We were all so
young. I don't know... I think that did a lot of damage to Bobby, made him
the clingy boy he is today. It's what left him open to get hurt by men like
Jackson." Sarah said, with a shiver of disgust.

"I'm no doctor and I could have told you that much, sis." Emily said with
a sad smile. "So there is more, I know there is. I know you Sarah, you
couldn't let anyone just stand there and say something like that. You I
think caused the most fights in that one year than any of us combined."

"True, but I also tried to talk to him about it the most. God I was what,
barely 13 when he came out? If that. I couldn't stand seeing what it was
doing to our family. I was in that pre-hormonal, think I am right about
everything stage."

"Hell, you still think you are right about everything." Emily laughed.

"Only because I am." Sarah retorted. "I was angry. I was mad cause our
dad let whatever Bobby had said hurt our family. It was then I knew what I
wanted to do for a living. Not the name or all that really, but I knew that
I wanted to help people through their problems so that way they wouldn't
hurt like our family did. Little did I know my baby sister was hurting all
these years and I couldn't help her. I would have found a way to help you
Em." Sarah said, finally looking up at her sister and taking her hand.

"I know that know Sarah and you are doing a pretty bang up job of it
now. Tell me what else happened. What are you avoiding telling me? You are
trying your damnedest not to answer the question."

"Every think there might be a reason why?" Sarah asked with a little too
much attitude.

"Yes, which is why you need to talk about it."

"Who is the professional here?' Sarah asked with a defiant look on her
face. "I hate when you are right." She grumbled.

"I know you do because you think you are the only one that is capable of
that feat." Emily said squeezing her hand, trying to easy the tension with
a bit of humor. She could tell by the look on her sister's face that she
had failed.

Sarah sighed audibly. "I did the first thing that came to mind; I picked
up a plate and threw it against the wall. They all shut up and stared at
me. The look in his eyes..." Sarah hesitated again. Emily could have swore
she looked afraid. Sarah never looked afraid.

"Sarah, sweetie, are you okay?" Emily asked after a minute or two. Sarah
had a long, far away look on her face.

Sarah slowly turned her sunken eyes to her sister's. In a matter of
minutes Sarah had seemed to age years. "He looked, I don't know, possessed?
He looked like he was ready to kill or be killed. It was scary. I've been a
doctor since I was 25 and I still can't... I have never seen anyone look
like that ever. He... he yelled at me. Called me a stupid..." Sarah's voice
trailed off.

"Sarah, he called you a stupid what?" Emily said quietly, gently trying
to get her to continue.

"He called me a stupid bitch. 'You've always sided with them. Turn your
back on everything you've been taught your entire life. Turn you back on
your family. In one night, I have lost all my children. From this day
forward, I have no children.'" Collin wrapped his arms around her from
behind as Sarah collapsed into sobs. "I... I couldn't even look at any of
them. I... I was so mad. So hurt. I just wanted to get out of that house."

Emily felt as if she was going to be sick again, this time, not because
of the child growing within her. She had caused this. This, all of this,
was here fault. The fight with Bobby, the way everything happened tonight,
Emily stood, she needed to get out. She needed to get away. Sarah watched
her sister through tear filled eyes as she took three steps and stumbled.

"Are you okay, Em?" Sarah asked quickly sobering up.

Emily weakly nodded, grabbing onto island for support; She walk three
feet and stumble collapse on the floor. As Sarah buried her head into her
husband's arms, the tears slowing, she heard the most sickening sound of
her life.

The thud of Emily's body hitting the floor.
