I sat down in one of the chairs at the waiting
area and than an older man sat down beside me in one of the chairs.
He looked at me and said," You must be the young
man my daughter told us about."
I replied," I don't think there is that much to
talk about. My name is John Nail."
He said," My name is Robert Martin but you can
call me Bob. I was guessing because you seem a little bit out of your
element here in San Francisco."
I said," This must have taken you awhile to
get used to."
He chuckled," It did indeed, at first I would
just deny it. It can be difficult to accept when your son turns out to be
quiet feminine. It came easier to accept when she started developing
feminine hips when she was about 11. When she was 12 my wife and I started
her on her transition. I bet you never thought that you would fall in love
with a girl like Terri."
I said," I wasn't sure I was going to fall in
love especially after my ex. I don't want to really get into it but she
was really flaky."
He laughed and said," Yep, they can make your
life real interesting. So what do you do?"
I said," I work at the Ready-Mix plant in town,
I work where the gravel is."
He asked," How long have you worked there?"
I said," Since I graduated out of high school.
I couldn't decide what I wanted to go to school for so I decided that work
is a good alternative. That has been eight years ago and not planning to
quit now."
He said," Well, I must say you sound like a
solid fellow for Terri."
I said," I hope to get your blessing because
I want to ask your daughter to marry me."
He looked at me for a minute and said," Well,
you definitely have my blessing. Now I want you to treat her right. She
is a special girl."
I said," Agreed, and you can rest assure I
will do my best."
He said," That is a good enough answer for
me."
We waited for 2 hours and than the surgeon
came out and told us everything went fine and she is recovering in her
room.
I walked in with Bob and he saw his wife
and took her out into the hall where they could talk quietly.
I walked over and we kissed and she said,"
Well, I am now a complete woman. So what do you think of my father?"
I said," I like him and it seems he likes
me."
She said," What is there not to like? When
I first started dating the guys I dated were almost as feminine as me. I
pretty much quit dating for a long time and than I met you."
I asked," So when will you be able to
leave?"
She said," I will be able to check out by
tomorrow morning. Now about that surprise, when can I expect to find out
about it?"
I said," I have a moment picked out."
Bob and his wife came back in and she was
beaming with pride.
Terri asked," Mom, what is going on? You
are beaming like a neon sign and John says he has a surprise for me and
says he is going to wait for the right moment."
Terri's mom who I find out is Marie,"
Don't you worry, I think you will love the surprise."
We visited for several hours and than a
nurse came in and said visiting hours are over.
I looked at my watch and saw it was
10;00 and I hailed a cab and went back to the motel.
I got a call before getting ready to
go to bed and it was Bob.
Bob said," John, how would you like to
come over to my brother's place? I don't think you want to stay at the
cold motel alone tonight. My brother has plenty of room and it seems you
are going to be part of the family."
I got my bag and 30 minutes later
there was a knock at the door and I opened it and it was Bob.
He said," We have to go Mark is in the
tow away zone."
We talked on the way to the lobby and
as we went out there was his brother standing beside a blue Ford Taurus.
Mark followed me to the trunk and opened it and I put my bag in.
We got in and me in the back seat and
got buckled in.
We talked about my job and Cody in
general and Mark remarked that I didn't seem like a city person.
Before we got to the house Bob said," I
thought I would warn you that the women and that is Mark's and my wife get
pretty emotional about Terri being proposed to."
We walked in and I barely had time to
set my bag down they came running with tears in their eyes and smothered me
with kisses and hugs.
I said," I haven't proposed yet."
Bob's wife Linda said," I am sure she
will say yes."
I sat down on the couch with Mark's
and Bob's wife on either side of me and Mark handed me a beer.
We talked until almost 1 in the
morning and I felt myself nodding off.
I got up and Mark and Stacy showed me
to the other guest room and I went in.
I put on a pair of I think you would
call leisure bottoms and climbed into bed.
I chuckled at what transpired today I
came here with Terri and met her father Bob and her mom Linda and they
welcomed me into their family. I am staying at Bob's brother's house
instead of at the motel. I was smothered with kisses and hugs by Stacy and
Linda and they are both sure that Terri says yes.
If we do get married I see that I will
be marrying into a close knit family who have accepted me as their own.
I felt myself gradually falling asleep
knowing I will be picking up Terri and knowing I am going to have to rent a
car and drive around this city.
