Becoming Becky (part 22)

It seems like a dream-come-true when a young gender dysphoric boy has
understanding parents who supports his transition. When she gets engaged,
she faces the challenge of how to tell her fiancι! I hope you enjoy
this work of fiction.

As the date of the dinner with Joanne's parents approached, she briefed Bob
as well as she could about her father. The more he learned the more he
realized that John was a real piece of work, and grew more nervous about
meeting him.

On the agreed upon day they drove to Joanne's parents house and Jessica
greeted them. They went into the living room where Bob came face to face
with John. Bob extended his hand and said, "Good to meet you,
Mr. Bradley."

John stood up and took Bob's hand without enthusiasm, and said, "So, are
you queer too?"

Bob expected hostility, but didn't think it would come so fast. Still, he
did his best to remain civil, and replied, "No sir, I'm straight, and so is
Joanne."

"I was happy when Jake was born," John said, "I wanted a son so badly –
then he turned queer and his mother let him wear girls clothes, and took
him away one day to get his balls cut off! Do you expect me to feel good
about that?"

"I know this has been difficult for you," Bob said, "but it was difficult
for Joanne as well."

"Don't hand me that psycho-babble stuff about being born into the wrong
body!" John said, "I'm a science teacher and don't buy all that crap!"

"Well sir, would you agree that men and women think differently?" Bob
asked.

"You don't have to be a brain surgeon to figure that one out!" John shot
back.

"That's just it," said Bob, "it's in the brain – what if Jake was born
with a female brain?"

"Like in some science-fiction movie?" John asked, sarcastically.

"No, but it just developed that way," said Bob, "Biologically all mammals
start out as females, and gradually the males develop their
characteristics. But for about three in a thousand, the brain doesn't
change into a male brain."

"And just why would that happen?" John asked, with a bit more interest.

"We don't know," said Bob, "It might be from genetics, or it might be from
hormones – during pregnancy a woman's body is flooded with hormones."

"Yeah," said John, "I sure remember that! So you are seriously saying that
the brain is female and the rest of the body is male?"

"That's about the size of it," Bob said, "Can you imagine how difficult it
is to struggle through life trying to make sense of it all?"

John was silent for a while, and Bob decided to just let him think.
Finally John broke the silence with, "Jake was never as big as the other
boys, and he kept wanting to play with girl toys, even though we tried to
teach him properly."

"I'm sure it was confusing for you and Mrs. Bradley as well," said Bob.

"Hell yeah," replied John, "it was confusing to doctors, ministers and
child psychologists as well. We tried to do what we could to fix Jake, but
nothing worked."

"The medical profession has advanced a lot since then, and now we know that
Jake suffered with gender dysphoria," Bob said, "but she has dealt with it
and become a beautiful and successful woman, and just wants to be accepted
by her father."

John was silent for a bit and got up and said, "I need to be alone," and
walked out of the room. Bob sat there and waited him out, not knowing if
he was getting through to John or just upsetting him further.

In fifteen minutes John returned and called out, "Joanne, would you come in
here?"

Joanne came in, quite surprised, because her father had never called her by
that name. "Yes daddy?"

John took Joanne in his arms and hugged her, saying, "Bob has helped me to
realize how wrong I was about you – I know I must have caused you a lot
of pain, and I'm truly sorry." To everyone's surprise he kissed Joanne on
her cheek.

"That's all behind us now," said Joanne.

John turned to Bob and said, "You've got enough balls for the two of you –
call me John."

"Ok John," Bob said, "may we have your blessing to marry?"

"Of course you can," said John, "if you can convince her mother."

Jessica approached and put her arms around Bob and Joanne.

John then asked Bob, "I'm surprised at how much you know ..."

Bob responded, "since I'm just a hick farm-boy?"

I wouldn't put it like that," said John, "but you don't learn this kind of
stuff milking cows and driving a tractor."

"I have an agriculture degree from State," said Bob, "where I learned a lot
about biology – you need to know a few things to raise live stock."

"Besides that," Joanne added, "his sister Becky is transgendered."

"Then you'll take good care of my daughter," John said.

Dinner was ready and they had a warm conversation as they ate.

Bob and Joanne explained that they weren't ready to make wedding plans just
yet, but wanted John and Jessica involved, to which they agreed. After
dinner they continued to talk, until Bob and Joanne had to leave.

On the drive back Joanne asked what Bob had said that had changed her
father's mind. "I don't really know what did it," admitted Bob, "I didn't
really know until he called you that I had made any impact at all – he
sure wasn't easy!"

Joanne responded, "Bob, you have gone from being 'Mr. Pretty Good' to
'Mr. Right' and I am so happy that you got my father back for me!"

"Well, I'm kind of uneasy about one thing," said Bob, "We have your parents
blessing to get married, but I haven't even asked you yet – I don't know
for sure if you will agree."

"Well, you won't know until you ask," said Joanne.

They drove until they reached a rest stop and pulled off the freeway. Bob
led Joanne to a picnic table and asked her to sit. He got on one knee and
said, "I don't have a ring yet, but Joanne Bradley, will you marry me?"

Joanne grabbed him and kissed him, saying, "Of course I will!" and kissed
him, pulling him to his feet. Now let's go home," she said, "I have a
special desert in mind for you!"
