Becoming Becky (part 7)

It seems like a dream-come-true when a young gender dysphoric boy has
understanding parents who supports his transition. When she gets engaged,
she faces the challenge of how to tell her fiancι! I hope you enjoy
this work of fiction.

––––––––––––––––––––

The next morning was Saturday, and Bill felt he was only part way through a
long and difficult weekend. Bill awoke from his bed on the couch, made a
coffee and sat on the front porch. It was a little after dawn, but still
well into the day for a farm. Bob and Becky were up before Bill and were
busy milking the cows.

In a little while Bob approached and sat down, saying, "I was a real jerk
yesterday – what I said was really mean."

"Was it true?" asked Bill.

"Technically yes," replied Bob, "but there is much more to it than that,
and if you will let me explain, perhaps it will help."

"Please go on," replied Bill.

Bob explained about gender dysphoria, and about Becky being a girl born
into a boy's body.

"I've heard that sort of thing before," said Bill, "but it seems pretty
far-fetched."

Bob explained further, including the mental turmoil trans-women go through,
and the high suicide rate, including his father's brother. The discussion
went on for nearly half an hour, and Bob ran out of things to say.

Bob finished with, "I have really been a jerk, teasing Becky and being
mean, and I'm really sorry. She thinks the world of you, Bill, and was
looking forward to a wonderful life with you. Our whole family really likes
you think you would be perfect for Becky."

"I don't know what kind of husband I could be for someone like Becky," Bill
replied.

"Just think about it," said Bob, and he went into the house.

Bill remained on the porch, considering all that Bob had said. Bill
thought he pretty open-minded, and not at all homophobic. He knew gay guys
at work and never felt any discomfort, though he wasn't at all interested
in them.

Bill saw Becky approaching. As she got closer Bill could see that she had
been crying.

"It looks like you've had a rough night," said Bill.

"Yes," admitted Becky, "I didn't sleep much – my world is falling
apart."

Bill moved from a chair to a swinging bench and said, "will you sit with
me?"

Becky nodded in agreement and sat next to Bill. Bill took her hands and
looked into her eyes.

"I've had a lot to think about, and it's caused me to examine who I really
am, and what I believe," said Bill, "I'm ashamed about how I reacted last
night, and I'm sorry."

"I don't think men ever take that sort of news well," she said, "some girls
get beat up or killed when their guys find out."

"I was angry and hurt," said Bill, "but would never hurt you!"

"I know," said Becky, "you are unlike any other man."

"I need to get right to the point," said Bill, "I still love you and my
love transcends gender."

"I'm not sure exactly what you mean," replied Becky.

"What I mean is that I love you even if you are a boy," said Bill, "and if
that means I have to be gay, then I'm okay with that."

"I love you too, Bill," she replied, "but I'm not a boy – wait here."

Becky ran into the house and returned with her purse. Pulling out her
wallet she showed Bill her driver's license, which clearly stated her name:
Becky Holmes, gender: female.

Bill pulled Becky to him and kissed her, telling her how much he loved her
and still wanted to marry her. "I know this says you're a woman, but I'm
even more confused now," Bill said, "but I know for sure that I love you."

"I love you completely Bill," said Becky, "and really need you to
understand."

"I'm honestly trying," Bill replied, "but this is really complicated."

"That is all I can expect of you," she said.

"Do you still want to get married?" Bill asked.

"Yes, I do," said Becky, "but not until I'm sure you know what you are
getting into."

"I'm not sure I can handle any more big surprises," admitted Bill.

"I just need you to understand completely," said Becky, "so there are no
more surprises."

"So what's next?" asked Bill.

"I want you to come with me to see my doctor," she said, "he can help you
better understand."

Becky asked Bill to come inside and took him to a computer and brought up
some transgender support web sites. Bill read several articles while Becky
and her mother made breakfast.

Jim stopped to talk with Bill, and said, "I'm glad you still love Becky,
and I hope her being a trans-woman will begin to make sense to you. She
isn't just a boy in a dress."

"It's complicated, and I'm trying to make sense of it," replied Bill, "but
I love Becky completely – she just wants me to understand her better."

"That's a good thing," said Jim, "and don't hesitate to ask me anything you
like."

Becky called Dr. Fredericks at home and they talked for about ten minutes.
He didn't have office hours on Saturday but had a special interest in
Becky, so in invited Bill and Becky to come to his home for a cookout for
lunch today. She gratefully accepted and informed Bill.

Bill read all the articles he could find online, but knew that not
everything on the internet was true – after all there were plenty of
entries for time travel and anti-gravity.

Some of what Bill read was hard to believe, while some really seemed to fit
with what he now knew about Becky.

After breakfast Bill helped Becky with some of the work around the farm,
and both could feel their relationship healing. About 11:00am they
departed to drive to Dr. Fredericks house, a little over an hour away.

On the way they discussed what Bill had learned online, and his
understanding was growing. "I read that in order to have your gender
legally changed you usually have to do the surgery," Bill said.

"Yes, that's the general idea, but more precisely I had to have
irreversible medical treatment," Becky said, "before I began puberty my
testicles were removed."

Bill cringed at the very thought of that, and said, "that's pretty
extreme."

"I really didn't need them," said Becky, "and if I kept them, I would have
developed into a boy instead of a girl."

"From all that I have seen, you are very much a girl," Bill agreed, "but
you still have your – your?"

"My penis has shrunken to a small size, and it is more like a clitoris,"
Becky said, "if you like, you can call it my clitty – just please don't
call me a girl with a dick."

"I would NEVER do that!" declared Bill, "now even Bob knows that!"

They arrived at Dr. Fredericks and were both welcomed. He offered them
some iced tea and they sat on his deck while he grilled some brats.

"I've read a lot about gender dysphoria and gender transition," said Bill,
"but I just don't get the part about being born into the wrong body."

"I'll focus on that part then," said the doctor, "it doesn't happen very
often – perhaps a few per thousand births, and we don't entirely
understand it, but let us do a gedanken experiment."

"A what?" asked Bill.

"Sorry, gedanken is a German word. It is a thought experiment,"
Dr. Fredericks explained, "Some of the greatest minds in science used them
to explore things you could not do physically – Einstein, Schrφdinger
and Newton, to name a few."

"As an engineer, those are all names I know well, so let's proceed,"
replied Bill

"I'm sure you have seen one of more movies in which people's minds were
swapped, so they were then in someone else's bodies," he began.

"Sure, I those can be hilarious," Bill agreed.

"Well, if our minds were swapped, which one would be the REAL you?" the
doctor asked.

"I suppose it would be based on where the mind was," Bill replied.

"Exactly – now what if you swapped with a woman?" asked the doctor.

"Then I would be a man in a woman's body," agreed Bill, "but it's not quite
like that for Becky – there was no swapping here."

"True, but you can get the picture," Dr. Fredericks continued, "now what if
instead of swapping, your mind would have been born into a female body?"

"I'm not sure – wouldn't I just learn to accept my body and grow up as a
woman?" Bill countered.

"Perhaps, and there may be some who do," the Doctor said, "but the male and
female brains are just not the same."

"That must have been very confusing," Bill said, "growing up knowing
something isn't right, but not knowing what."

"Exactly!" said Dr. Fredericks, "but fortunately Becky's parents brought
her to me, and we could give her a better life."

"I'm glad she wasn't driven to suicide," Bill said.

"Yes," agreed the doctor, "I like to think that I'm helped many avoid that
fate."

"How many trans-women have you treated?" Bill asked.

"I have about a dozen currently," Dr. Fredericks replied, "but over the
years, perhaps fifty."

Lunch was ready and they enjoyed the cookout. Afterwards Bill said, "Thank
you for your insights, Dr. Fredericks – you took care of my last
remaining point of confusion."

Bill and Becky drove back to the farm. Along the way Bill said, "I think I
understand a lot better now, and I fully understand that you are a woman,
so I don't have to turn gay to marry you!"

They both laughed for a bit. Then Becky said, "Intimacy will be a little
different for us, and I'd like you to talk to my father about it."

"What?" asked Bill, "you want me to talk to your father about having sex
with his daughter? – now that is a bit weird!"

They both shared another laugh, and Becky explained, "My father knows
things that most guys don't, and I think it would be good for you to talk
with him.

Bill agreed, though he was very nervous about it.
