Marsha Under Cover (part 1)

How does a straight man deal with a truly beautiful cross-dresser, even
when he knows her secret? I hope you enjoy this work of fiction.

––––––––––––––––––––

I'm Bill, a police detective in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Marty, my partner
has worked with me for over 20 years. We're kind of like an old married
couple – both of us are bachelor's, not that we haven't tried. I've
known many women over the years, but the relationships never last.

At first they like my being a cop – it's kind of macho, but soon they
start to worry that I'll get shot or knifed. Grand Rapids is a relatively
safe city – not like Detroit, New York or Los Angeles, where people are
getting killed every day, but just the same, police work is inherently more
dangerous than being an accountant.

But the thing that always seems to end the relationship is working hours –
often long and very irregular. I can't tell you just how many dates I
missed because I had to work a stake-out. No amount of apologies will
suffice when it just keeps on happening.

So Marty and I are like an old married couple – pretty comfortable with
each other – we can almost finish each other's sentences, and, like most
old married couples – no sex! Not that I wanted to have sex with Marty
– I'm completely straight and as far as I know he is too.

While we worked together well, the work had become a little routine –
there isn't a lot of excitement here. Both Marty and I had told our
lieutenant that we would like to be considered for an exchange program,
allowing us to work for a time where there was more action. Nothing seemed
to be happening, so we were both surprised when we were called in one day
made an offer to participate in a Federal Organized Crime Task Force. Now
that sounded like some REAL action.

We both jumped at the chance. We were told that a Federal Agent would come
interview us, and if we both passed, we could start immediately. "Both
passed?" I asked.

"Yes," replied the lieutenant, "they are looking for experienced partners
who work well together – partners who can absolutely depend on each
other."

I knew that Marty and I would qualify on that count, but who knows what
other requirements we would have to meet.

The next day Agent Rita Sanders came to interview us. She interviewed me
first and it seemed to be going well. She explained that much of our work
would require that we go undercover, often disguised, always with assumed
identities. Then she caught me totally by surprise when she asked, "Would
you be willing to assume the identity of a woman?"

"I'd make a pretty homely woman," I said, "why don't you just use a real
woman?"

"There are very few women in law enforcement who have been paired with a
male partner successfully for as long as you and Marty have worked
together."

That made sense, and I've "taken one for the team" before, but this was
pretty extreme. Before I answered, she continued, "I take it you aren't
very pleased with that prospect."

I agreed, and she told me that the first few assignments would require a
married couple, so one of us would have to be a woman. "Would you be able
to handle working with Marty if he assumed a woman's role?" she asked.

"No problem," I responded, without even thinking. I really wanted this
job, and as long as I didn't have to go in drag, I'd deal with Marty in
drag.

I thought I may have passed the interview because she went on to interview
Marty. I waited at my desk for Marty's return. His interview seemed to
take longer than mine. Marty and Agent Sanders returned and she said she
would give us her decision in the morning. Marty and I went out for a
couple of beers – unsure if to celebrate or lament.

I was dying to ask Marty how he felt about the woman question. "When she
asked me if I would be a woman I asked if there was any choice, and she
said you could be," Marty replied, "but I said you would be one really ugly
woman!"

We both had a good laugh about that and I responded, "I said something
similar, but maybe 'ugly' is a bit harsh."

"Have you ever dressed as a woman before?" I asked.

Marty nearly choked on his beer, and said, "Hell no! Do you think I'm some
sort of pervert?"

I chuckled and slapped him on the back, and said, "I'm sure you will fem up
better than I would, but it's going to be really strange working with you
that way!"

"I think it is going to be more of an adjustment for me than for you!" said
Marty.

I agreed, and counted my blessings. I had a new respect for my friend, who
was sacrificing so much so we could get this assignment.

The next morning Agent Sanders was waiting for us in the lieutenant's
office. She said, "Congratulations, you've been selected for the job."

The lieutenant then added, "For the next week you will work out of this
office and be briefed on your new assignment. Marty will also begin
training for his new persona."

We spent the next four hours with Agent Sanders, who explained that we
would be going to Las Vegas and staying at one of the Casino hotels. Our
assignment was to dig into a money laundering operation, while posing as a
couple on vacation.

A woman arrived and led Marty away while I stayed with Agent Sanders for
further briefing. We worked into the evening. Agent sanders gave me the
address of a restaurant where I was to meet Marty. "I hope you know how to
treat a lady," she said, smiling, and then departed.
