  RATINGS

In order from best to worst I rate stories as follows:

Outstanding
Excellent
Very Good
Good
Grudgingly Good
Not Good

The "Outstanding", "Excellent", "Very Good", and "Good" ratings
indicate, to varying degrees, that I like the story.

The "Grudgingly Good" rating indicates that I think the story is
well written, but that I find some of the elements in the story
so disturbing that if I were to review the story based solely on
my personal tastes I would give it a "Not Good" rating.

The "Not Good" rating indicates that I do not like the story.

No. 142 - August 10, 1998

So Shy by Scott Sanders

M/F, Teen

Length: 6,300 words

  SUMMARY

Scott befriends Jenny; learns why she is so shy; and helps her
overcome her shyness.

  COMMENTARY

This is a well written, romantic story. The plot is simple, and the
author handles it quite well. The characters seem realistic.

There are a few spelling and grammatical errors.

  JUDGMENT

This is an excellent story.

No. 143 - August 11, 1998

Wraith by BitBard

F-solo, F/M

Length: 8,200 words

  SUMMARY

Gail escapes her loneliness and her aunt with the help of a ghost.

  COMMENTARY

My heart went out to Gail. I felt sad at the beginning when I saw
the predicament she was in. Seeing her get away from her aunt and
start a new life for herself, made me happy.

This story did feel like it was missing something. I would like to
learn more about the ghost. Considering the title and the author's
preface I was expecting much more. The ghost played a key role, but
did not get very much time on stage. From the author's descriptions
it was hard to tell if the ghost was even intelligent enough to know
what it was doing. Gail apparently thought so, but I was not
completely convinced.

I think this story lacked passion, for the most part. I can
understand how someone in Gail's position would not have much hope.
I just feel as though the build up should have been a little more
dramatic. I realize that in life things do not always work out like
that, but after all this is a story. In the final analysis it is not
my story and the author is free to do as he pleases with his
characters, but I was left feeling a little empty.

  JUDGMENT

This is a good story.

No. 144 - August 12, 1998

Season of the Witch by Hawkeye

M/F

Length: 3,900 words

  NOTE

This is part three of a seven part series called "Seasons".

Part 1 - Hazy Shade of Winter [Rogue Review No. 73]
Part 2 - Summertime Blues [Rogue Review No. 125]
Part 3 - Season of the Witch [Rogue Review No. 144]
Part 4 - April Showers
Part 5 - The Cruelest Month
Part 6 - The Real World
Part 7 - A Time to Cast Away Stones

  SUMMARY

Sam and Lisa enjoy Halloween.

  COMMENTARY

This is a nice romantic story. I like the way the characters
interact. The plot is simple, but it works.

The reference to She-Ra dates both the story and the author.

I found the sex to be a bit anti-climactic. The author did a great
job until that point. The sex scene did not have the same passion or
excitement as the rest of the story did.

  JUDGMENT

This is a very good story.

No. 145 - August 12, 1998

More Than Friends by Sue D. Nyym

F/F, Teen

Length: 6,000 words

  SUMMARY

Kim and Amanda, two 14-year-old girls, have a sleep-over and explore
each other's body.

  COMMENTARY

There was just a bit too much sex in this story. It does not begin
with the first sentence, but it does dominate the story.

This is a well written stroke story, but I prefer a story that has
more than just sex.

  JUDGMENT

This is a good story, but there was too much sex and not enough plot
or character development.

No. 146 - August 15, 1998

Imaginary Lover by Rock Hancock

M/F

Length: 5,300 words

  SUMMARY

Rocky has some mysterious, paranormal, sexual experiences.

  COMMENTARY

The story is both amusing and arousing; a nice combination. I like
the ending; it goes well with the rest of the story and did not seem
forced. The descriptions of sex are graphic, but not so much so that
they take away from the development of plot or character.

This is not your average sex story, but I like it.

  JUDGMENT

This is an excellent story.

No. 147 - August 15, 1998

New Beginnings by Miss Behavin'

M/F

Length: 6,400 words

  SUMMARY

Aaron, a widower, meets Kirsten at his son's wedding.

  COMMENTARY

I cannot think of anything negative to say about this story. It is
well paced. I like the characters. I like the build up to the sex
and the way the author described the sex.

  JUDGMENT

This is an excellent story.

No. 148 - August 15, 1998

Office Affair by Mat Twassel

M/F

Length: 2,000 words

  SUMMARY

Mat's wife teases him about having an affair with one of the
secretaries at work.

  COMMENTARY

I like the twists and turns in this story. The author does not
reveal everything, instead he leaves part of it up to the reader's
imagination. He made the right choice.

  JUDGMENT

This is an excellent story.

No. 149 - August 15, 1998

Incentive by Vickie Morgan

F/M, Teen

Length: 1,500 words

  SUMMARY

Angela, a tutor, inspires Jake, her student, to excel.

  COMMENTARY

This story is direct. There is some build up, but not much. It is
well written, but I prefer that author take a little more time in
describing the action.

Despite the lack of subtlety I found the story arousing.

  JUDGMENT

This is a very good story, but it seems a bit rushed.

No. 150 - August 16, 1998

A Slave to Capitalism (Chapter 1) by sfmaster

F/F, B&D

Length: 4,000 words

  SUMMARY

Doris suffers the consequences of stealing from Andrea, her boss.

  COMMENTARY

This is a good start. I liked the way the story develops through
the first chapter. I am curious to see where the story will go in
future chapters.

The story would probably squick some people. Not everyone likes B&D
sex stories.

This is a good beginning, but what comes next?

  JUDGMENT

This is an excellent beginning.
